Abstract:Metal ions are widely distributed in nature and they have key roles in the environment, bioscience and medical science. Some metal ions,such as Hg2+,Fe3+,Cu2+,Zn2+and Al3+,play important roles in the physiology and pathology of organisms. An excess or deficiency of these metal ions would lead to physiological dysfunction and cause a variety of diseases. Recently,reaction-based fluorescence probes have attracted considerable attention due to their high sensitivity and good selectivity. This review mainly focuses on reaction-based fluorescence probes for the detection of metal ions in the past five years. The design and synthesis of probes,their sensing mechanisms and their applications were summarized. Currently,the reaction-based fluorescence probes are still in their initial stages and hence many problems need to be solved. With the resolution of these problems, reaction-based fluorescence probes would show higher sensitivities with less reaction-time and possess wider applications. In the future,reaction-based fluorescence probes should show efficient development in biological detection and expand practical applications.

Abstract:Metal ions have a significant impact on the environment and the growth and development of organism,therefore,the recognition and detection of metal ions in the environment and organism is gaining widespread attention. Among different analytical methods,fluorescence analysis has the advantages of high sensitivity,good selectivity,real-time and in situ detection,etc.,which is a good tool to achieve the recognition and detection of metal ions in the environment and organism. This paper is aimed to review the coumarin-based fluorescent sensors for the recognition and detection of heavy metal ions (Hg2+、Pb2+、Cd2+、Ni2+、Ag+),biologically important transition metal ions (Cu2+、Zn2+、Fe3+) and their applications in recent five years,focusing on the design and synthesis of sensors, recognition mechanism,sensing characteristics and applications. With the higher requirement for metal ions detection , the design of coumarin-based fluorescent sensors will be developed for better performance with higher sensitivity,selectivity and stronger anti-interference in the future. In addition, applications of coumarin-based fluorescent sensors in biological detection are expected to be further developed.

Abstract:Heavy-metal pollution has attracted intensive attention from the public because of the severe threats of heavy metals to the ecosystem and human health. Ultralow concentration of heavy metals in aquatic environment leads to the urgent needs of sensitive approaches for heavy-metal detection. Electrochemical DNA biosensors present outstanding superiority in convenience, selectivity, and sensitivity compared with conventional methods. To achieve the ultralow detection limit, efforts have been made to implement signal enhancement strategies to develop electrochemical DNA biosensors with enhanced sensing performance. This review focuses on the recent progress in signal enhancement strategies applied to electrochemical DNA biosensors for heavy-metal-ion detection including nicking enzyme-assisted amplification, the utilization of core-shell nanoparticles, and nanocomposites modification.

Abstract:Abstract Metal ions are widely present in biological systems and participate in many critical biochemical processes such as material transportation, energy conversion, information transmission and metabolic regulation, making them indispensable substance in our body. They can cause health problems when deficiency or excess occurs. To understand various metabolic processes and facilitate diseases diagnosis, it is very important to measure the content and monitor the distribution of metal ions in individual cells, tissues and whole organisms. Among the various methods for metal ion detection, fluorescent sensors with organic dyes have attracted tremendous attention due to many advantages such as high fluorescence quantum yield, facile modification approaches and biocompatibility in addition to operation ease, high sensitivity, fast detection speed, and real-time detection. This review summarizes the recent progress on the detection and imaging of the metal ions in biological systems including Na + , K + , Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ , Zn 2+ , and Cu 2+ provides an opinion on remaining challenges to be addressed in this field.

Abstract:Heavy metal ions are one of the main sources of water pollution, which has become a major global problem. Given the growing need for heavy metal ion detection, electrochemical sensor stands out for its high sensitivity and efficiency. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have garnered much interest as electrode modifiers for electrochemical detection of heavy metal ions owing to their significant specific surface area, tailored pore size, and catalytic activity. This review summarizes the progress of MOF-based materials, including pristine MOFs and MOF composites, in the electrochemical detection of various heavy metal ions. The synthetic methods of pristine MOFs, the detection mechanisms of heavy metal ions and the modification strategies of MOFs are introduced. Besides, the diverse applications of MOF-based materials in detecting both single and multiple heavy metal ions are presented. Furthermore, we present the current challenges and prospects for MOF-based materials in electrochemical heavy metal ion detection.

Abstract:As heavy metal ions severely harm human health, it is important to develop simple, sensitive and accurate methods for their detection in environment and food. Electrochemical detection featured with short analytical time, low power cost, high sensitivity and easy adaptability for in-situ measurement is one of the most developed methods. This review introduces briefly the recent achievements in electrochemical sensing of heavy metal ions with inorganic, organic and bio-materials modified electrodes. In particular, the unique properties of inorganic nanomaterials, organic small molecules or their polymers, enzymes and nucleic acids for detection of heavy metal ions are highlighted. By employing some representative examples, the design and sensing mechanisms of these electrodes are discussed.

Because of its remarkable sensitivity, inherent miniaturization, portability and easy integration, photoelectrochemical analysis is becoming a promising analytical technique. This review focuses on the basic principles, classification, characteristics, and research progress of photoelectrochemical sensors with 94 references. The prospect of the development of photoelectrochemical sensors is also evaluated and discussed.

Abstract:Porphyrins have planar and conjugated structures, good optical properties, and other special functional properties. Owing to these excellent properties, in recent years, porphyrins and their analogues have emerged as a multifunctional platform for chemical sensors. The rich chemistry of these molecules offers many possibilities for metal ions detection. This review mainly discusses two types of molecular porphyrin and porphyrin composite sensors for metal ions detection, because porphyrins can be functionalized to improve their functional properties, which can introduce more chemical and functional sites. According to the different application materials, the section of porphyrin composite sensors is divided into five sub-categories: (1) porphyrin film, (2) porphyrin metal complex, (3) metal–organic frameworks, (4) graphene materials, and (5) other materials, respectively.

Abstract:Metal ions play a crucial role in many biochemical processes, and when in a state of scarcity or surplus, they can lead to various diseases. Therefore, the development of a selective, sensitive, cost-effective, and fast-responding sensor to detect metal ions is critical for in vitro medical diagnostics. In recent years, fluorescent sensors have been extensively investigated as potent kits for the effective assessment of metal ions in living systems due to their high sensitivity, selectivity, ability to perform real-time, non-invasive monitoring, and versatility. This review is an overview of recent advances in fluorescent sensors for the detection and imaging of metal ions in biosystems from 2018 to date. Specifically, we discuss their application in detecting essential metal ions and non-essential metal ions for in vitro diagnostics, living cell imaging, and in vivo imaging. Finally, we summarize remaining challenges and offer a future outlook on the above topics.

Abstract:Heavy metal ions, one of the major pollutants in the environment, exhibit non-degradable and bio-chain accumulation characteristics, seriously damage the environment, and threaten human health. Traditional heavy metal ion detection methods often require complex and expensive instruments, professional operation, tedious sample preparation, high requirements for laboratory conditions, and operator professionalism, and they cannot be widely used in the field for real-time and rapid detection. Therefore, developing portable, highly sensitive, selective, and economical sensors is necessary for the detection of toxic metal ions in the field. This paper presents portable sensing based on optical and electrochemical methods for the in situ detection of trace heavy metal ions. Progress in research on portable sensor devices based on fluorescence, colorimetric, portable surface Raman enhancement, plasmon resonance, and various electrical parameter analysis principles is highlighted, and the characteristics of the detection limits, linear detection ranges, and stability of the various sensing methods are analyzed. Accordingly, this review provides a reference for the design of portable heavy metal ion sensing.

Abstract:Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals or quantum dots (QDs) have been facilitating the development of sensitive fluorescence sensors over the past decade, due to their unique photophysical properties, versatile surface chemistry and ligand binding ability, and the possibility of the encapsulation in different materials or attachment to different functional materials, while retaining their native luminescence property. The optical metal ion chemosensors with high sensitivity and selectivity have been developed due to the importance of the metal ions' fundamental roles, possessed in a wide range of biological processes and the aquatic environment. This review addresses the different sensing strategies with chemically modified QD hybrid structures for the sensing of metal ions in aqueous solution or an in vivo environment, and discusses the photophysical mechanisms in the different sensor systems while comparing their detecting/sensing selectivity. The perspectives for the future potential developments in QD based optical sensing for metal ions are discussed.

Abstract:Detection of heavy metal ions has drawn significant attention in environmental and food area due to their threats to the human health and ecosystem. Colorimetry is one of the most frequently-used methods for the detection of heavy metal ions owing to its simplicity, easy operation and rapid on-site detection. The development of chromogenic materials and their sensing mechanisms are the key research direction in the area of colorimetric method. Since each chromogenic material has their unique optical and chemical properties, they have totally different colorimetric sensing mechanisms. This review focuses on the chromogenic materials and their sensing strategies for the colorimetric detection of heavy metal ions. We divide the chromogenic materials into three types, including organic materials, inorganic materials, and other materials. As for each type of chromogenic material, we discuss their detailed sensing strategies, sensing performance, and real sample applications. Moreover, current challenges and perspectives related to the colorimetry of heavy metal ions are also discussed in this review. The aim of this review is to help readers to better understand the principles of colorimetric methods for heavy metal ions and push the development of rapid detection of heavy metal ions.

Abstract:Owing to its unique features including low background noise, high signal-to-noise ratio, and rapid response, photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing is a state-of-the-art platform for rapidly and accurately monitoring target compounds. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are key porous crystalline materials that show exceptional potential for application in PEC sensors. A timely and systematic review of the recent progress made and future research trends is valuable for accelerating MOF/COF-based PEC sensor development. This review first discusses the photoactive MOF/COF design principles and key PEC performance control factors by elucidating typical strategies for designing and fabricating photoactive MOFs/COFs to improve photoexcitation, charge separation/transfer. Then, an overview of the considerable progress made in applying MOF/COF-based materials to PEC sensing is presented including pristine MOFs/COFs, MOF/COF-based heterojunctions, MOF derivatives, and MOF/COF hybrids. Finally, the critical challenges for practical applications of MOF/COF-based PEC sensors and the research prospects are briefly discussed.

Abstract:The recognition and sensing of the biologically and environmentally important metal ions has emerged as a significant goal in the field of chemical sensors in recent years. Among the various analytical methods, fluorescence has been a powerful tool due to its simplicity, high detection limit and application to bioimaging. This review highlights the fluorescent chemosensors for metal ions, which have been recently developed from our laboratory. This review was categorized by target metal ions, such as Cu2+, Hg2+, Zn2+, Pb2+, Cd2+, Vanadate, Ag+ and Au3+. Selectivity and sensitivity for these metal ions were achieved by introducing various ligands to core fluorophores, such as, rhodamine, fluorescein, pyrene, anthracene, naphthalimide, coumarin, and BODIPY.

Abstract:The emission and accumulation of heavy metals have been damaging our living situation. The ultrasensitive detection for heavy metal ions is an important area as it can alarm for pollution to protect the environment and help individual health. Electrochemical sensors known as the potential detecting methods attract the researcher’s attention and combined with nanomaterial constitute an active research area that could give opportunities for further development in heavy metal detection performance. To this end, this research gives a brief introduction to nanomaterials-based electrochemical sensors developed in recent years and focuses on the detection mechanism, advantages of using certain materials, the reason to achieve specific detection, and the electrochemical performances including their advantages and drawbacks. Whether individual detection of Hg(II), Pb(II), or the simultaneous detection of multiple heavy metals, all of those electrode systems show a bright future in actual environmental monitoring with high sensitivity, good repeatability and chemical stability.

Abstract:Iron and copper are two essential metal elements in living systems, and their homeostasis is extremely important to maintain normal biological activities. Deficiency or overload of these two metal ions are associated with pathological events. Especially, overload of these two species can induce unique cell death in characteristic pathways, i.e., ferroptosis and cuproptosis, respectively. Therefore, it is quite valuable to develop reliable detecting tools to study the biology of iron and copper. To date, a mountain of luminescent sensors has been presented for the detection of iron and copper ions, including molecular and nano sensors. These sensors have greatly contributed to the development of related metal biology. In this review, we summarize luminescent sensors for iron and copper ions that have been used for bioimaging purposes since 2017, including fluorescence, phosphorescence, and bioluminescence. The detecting mechanisms of these sensors will be emphasized, as well as their optical and biological performance. Finally, the merits and demerits of different types of sensors are discussed, as well as achievements and further directions in this field.

Abstract:The electron-transfer based quenching effect of commonly encountered transition metal ions on the photoluminescence of grapheme quantum dots (GQDs) was for the first time investigated, and was found to be associated with electron configuration of the individual metal ion. Ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA), the metal ion chelator, can competitively interact with metal ions to recover the quenched photoluminescence of GQDs. Basically, metal ions with empty or completely filled d orbits could not quench the photoluminescence of GQDs, but this quenching effect was observed for the metal ions with partly filled d orbits. Based on the quenching-recovering strategy, a simple optical metal sensing platform was established by taking Ni2+ as an example. Using the nickel ion-specific chelating reagent, dimethylglyoxime (DMG), to replace EDTA, a detection limit of 4.1μM was obtained in standard solution. This proposed strategy does not need further functionalization of GQDs, facilitating the application for simple, fast and cost-effective screening of metal ions.

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution has severe threats to the ecological environment and human health. Thus, it is urgent to achieve the rapid, selective, sensitive and portable detection of heavy metal ions. To overcome the defects of traditional methods such as time-consuming, low sensitivity, high cost and complicated operation, QDs (Quantum dots)-based nanomaterials have been used in sensors to significantly improve the sensing performance. Due to their excellent physicochemical properties, high specific surface area, high adsorption and reactive capacity, nanomaterials could act as potential probes or offer enhanced sensitivity and create a promising nanosensors platform. In this review, the rapidly advancing types of QDs for heavy metal ions detection are first summarized. Modified with ligands, nanomaterials, or biomaterials, QDs are assembled on sensors by the interaction of electrostatic adsorption, chemical bonding, steric hindrance, and base-pairing. The stability of QDs-based nanosensors is improved by doping the elements to QDs, providing the reference substance, optimizing the assemble strategies and so on. Then, according to transducer principles, the two most typical sensor categories based on QDs: optical and electrochemical sensors are highlighted to be discussed. In the meanwhile, portable devices combining with QDs to adapt the practical detection in complex situations are summarized. The deficiencies and future challenges of QDs in toxicity, specificity, portability, multi-metal co-detection and degradation during the detection are also pointed out. In the end, the development trends of QDs-based nanosensors for heavy metal ions detection are discussed. This review presents an overall understanding, recent advances, current challenges and future outlook of QDs-based nanosensors for heavy metal detection.
