Abstract:Heavy-metal pollution has attracted intensive attention from the public because of the severe threats of heavy metals to the ecosystem and human health. Ultralow concentration of heavy metals in aquatic environment leads to the urgent needs of sensitive approaches for heavy-metal detection. Electrochemical DNA biosensors present outstanding superiority in convenience, selectivity, and sensitivity compared with conventional methods. To achieve the ultralow detection limit, efforts have been made to implement signal enhancement strategies to develop electrochemical DNA biosensors with enhanced sensing performance. This review focuses on the recent progress in signal enhancement strategies applied to electrochemical DNA biosensors for heavy-metal-ion detection including nicking enzyme-assisted amplification, the utilization of core-shell nanoparticles, and nanocomposites modification.
Low-dose acetylsalicylic acid (100 mg/day) after aortocoronary bypass surgery: a placebo-controlled trial.

Abstract:The effect of low-dose acetylsalicylic acid (100 mg/day) upon bypass patency-rate and clinical course after aortocoronary bypass surgery was investigated in a randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial. Sixty patients with 143 distal anastomoses of bypasses were randomized, 46 underwent repeat angiography after 4 months. Using the intention to treat-strategy, treatment was superior to placebo as judged by bypass patency rate and occurrence of cardiovascular complications or death. Counting the six drop-outs as failures, only nine of the 31 patients of the placebo group, but 16 of the 29 patients of the treatment group were considered successes (P less than 0.04). Eighteen patients in the placebo group and eight patients of the treatment group received beta-adrenoceptor blockers postoperatively, suggesting again a favourable effect of the treatment. Adverse drug reactions were very rare and minor. Supported by pathophysiological insights and positive trends in similar trials, the positive result justifies the recommendation of prescribing 100 mg of acetylsalicylic acid once daily to all patients without contraindications after aortocoronary bypass surgery. The positive result of this trial warrants further clinical trials of low-dose acetylsalicylic acid for other indications in arterial diseases.

Abstract:Heavy metals are inorganic pollutants which pose a serious threat to human and environmental safety, and their effective removal is becoming an increasingly urgent issue. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are a novel group of crystalline porous materials, which have proven to be promising adsorbents because of their extremely high surface areas, optimizable pore volumes and pore size distributions. This study is a systematic review of the recent research on the removal of several major heavy metal ions by MOFs. Based on the different structures of MOFs, varying adsorption capacity can be achieved, ranging from tens to thousands of milligrams per gram. Many MOFs have shown a high selectivity for their target metal ions. The corresponding mechanisms involved in capturing metal ions are outlined and finally, the challenges and prospects for their practical application are discussed.

Abstract:The development of precise sensors to detect hazardous heavy metal ions (HMIs) in an aqueous medium has recently attracted much attention. Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) with large specific surface areas, more active sites, and flexible chemical structures have received tremendous research interest in many applications. MOFs composites blended with various functional materials are well suited for the electrochemical sensing of HMIs, because of their synergetic properties, including abundant active sites, enhanced electrical conductivity, and increased chemical stability. While MOFs composites’ synthesis protocols, modification techniques, and potential applications have been addressed in the previous reports, there is an increasing awareness of electrochemical detection of HMIs using MOFs composites. This review explicitly summarizes the electrochemical sensing of HMIs using various MOFs-based composites, including MOFs-carbon, MOFs-polymer, MOFs-metal nanoparticles, and MOFs-other composites. In addition, the challenges and opportunities towards electrochemical sensing with the MOFs composite-based materials are discussed.

Abstract:The rapid industrial and agricultural expansion is arousing increasingly severe heavy metal ion pollution due to their high toxicity to human beings and detrimental effect on the environment and ecology. Therefore, heavy metal ion removal from wastewater is an urgent need which has become an important area of research in both academia and industry. Advanced material has been synthesized either to overhaul classical water purification methods or bring avant-garde system to overcome the challenges, such as improving cost efficiency, scalability, multiple metals removal, reusability etc. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a new kind of three-dimensional organic–inorganic complex, have attracted incredible attention to satisfy these challenges, especially in the field of adsorption. This is due to their highly porous structure, extremely high surface area, and highly available exposed adsorptive sites. Remarkable progress has been done in this sector which urges a comprehensive, but critical review which could be substantial and easily readable. Here, we aimed to cover these cutting-edge research developments on design, synthesis, and applications of MOFs in effective heavy metals removal from water. We focused on high adsorption efficiency-oriented design and synthesis of MOF-based micro/nanoscaled materials including bulk MOF-based micro/nano materials (bulk MOFs, composites, and MOFs with unique nanostructures), two-dimensional (2D) MOF nanosheets, and three-dimensional (3D) MOFs incorporated porous membranes. The engineering principles of these structures for pollutants removal were corroborated and their performances were thoroughly compared. Based on our analysis and discussions, the most desirable characters of high-efficiency MOFs based adsorbents were revealed. We also scrutinized the knowledge gaps and gave future directions and perspectives for new experimental design. This review paper could provide some references and directions on the specific MOFs fabrication towards efficient heavy metal ions removal.

Abstract:Nanozymes, which can be defined as nanomaterials with excellent catalytic function, are well-known to the scientific community due to their distinct merits, such as low cost and high stability, which render them preferable to natural enzymes. As porous organic-inorganic coordination materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) possess a large number of active sites and thus can effectively mimic the properties of natural enzymes. Recently, MOFs-based nanozymes have also exhibited good application potential for the analysis of heavy metal ions. In comparison to the traditional detection methods for heavy metal ions, nanozyme-based colorimetric sensing permit intuitive visual analysis by relatively simple instruments, facilitating rapid and simple on-site screening. In this minireview, the preparation of MOFs-based nanozymes and the different enzyme activity types were briefly described, such as peroxidase-like and oxidase-like, and the relevant catalytic mechanisms were elaborated. Based on this, different response mechanisms of MOFs-based colorimetric methods to heavy metal ions, such as turn-off, turn-on, and turn-off-on were discussed. In addition, the colorimetric sensing applications of MOFs-based nanozymes for the detection of heavy metal ions were summarized. Finally, the current research status of MOFs-based nanozymes and the future development direction were prospected.

Abstract:As one of the main pollutants, heavy metal ions can accumulate in the human body and cause a cascade of damage. Electrochemical sensors provide great prospects for tracing heavy metal ions because of their properties of high sensitivity, low detection limits and fast response. Electrode surface modification materials play a key role in enhancing the performance of electrochemical sensors. Herein, we summarize in detail the recent work on electrochemical sensors modified by carbon nanomaterials (graphene and its derivatives, carbon nanofibers and carbon nanotubes), metal nanomaterials (gold, silver, bismuth and iron), complexes (MOFs, ZIFs and MXenes) and their composites for the detection of heavy metal ions (mainly include Cd(II), Hg(II), Pb(II), As(III), Cu(II) and Zn(II)) in food and water. The synthetic strategies, mechanisms, innovations, advantages, challenges and prospects of various electrode modification nanomaterials for the detection of heavy metal ions in food and water are discussed.

Abstract:The heavy metal contamination of water systems has become a major environmental concern worldwide. Photocatalysis using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has emerged as a promising approach for heavy metal remediation, owing to the ability of MOFs to fully degrade contaminants through redox reactions that are driven by photogenerated charge carriers. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of recent developments in MOF-based photocatalysts for removing and decontaminating heavy metals from water. The tunable nature of MOFs allows the rational design of composition and features to enhance light harvesting, charge separation, pollutant absorptivity, and photocatalytic activities. Key strategies employed include metal coordination tuning, organic ligand functionalization, heteroatom doping, plasmonic nanoparticle incorporation, defect engineering, and morphology control. The mechanisms involved in the interactions between MOF photocatalysts and heavy metal contaminants are discussed, including light absorption, charge carrier separation, metal ion adsorption, and photocatalytic redox reactions. The review highlights diverse applications of MOF photocatalysts in treating heavy metals such as lead, mercury, chromium, cadmium, silver, arsenic, nickel, etc. in water remediation. Kinetic modeling provides vital insights into the complex interplay between coupled processes such as adsorption and photocatalytic degradation that influence treatment efficiency. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is also crucial for evaluating the sustainability of MOF-based technologies. By elucidating the latest advances, current challenges, and future opportunities, this review provides insights into the potential of MOF-based photocatalysts as a sustainable technology for addressing the critical issue of heavy metal pollution in water systems. Ongoing efforts are needed to address the issues of stability, recyclability, scalable synthesis, and practical reactor engineering.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted extensive research interest because of their high specific surface area, tunable microporosity, low skeleton density and good stability, and they are seen as ideal functional materials for the detection and removal of metal ions. Current research is mainly focused on the trade-off between the permeability and selectivity, and the development of MOFs composites with superior performance to obtain satisfactory adsorption and separation capacity, such as MOFs membranes. In this review, we first summarize the various design and synthesis strategies for MOFs and MOF membrane materials, including with/without solvent, the mechanochemical method, the primary growth method and the secondary growth method. The recent advances in MOFs and MOFs membranes for the adsorption and removal of different types of metal ions are then highlighted. Finally, the opportunities and challenges for the future development of MOFs and MOFs membranes are proposed. This review aims to provide a deep understanding of the rational design and application research of MOFs and MOF membranes and promote development and progress in MOF hybrid materials.

Abstract:<h2>Abstract</h2>Heavy metal ions, one of the most important pollutants today, widely exist in the environment, and can cause different degrees of damage to the ecological environment and human body. In the face of the increasingly severe situation of heavy metal pollution, it is urgent to develop a rapid, robust, sensitive, and convenient method for heavy metal ions detection. Compared with the traditional detection methods, the screen-printed electrochemical sensor based on nanomaterials has the advantages of rapid detection speed, high sensitivity, high selectivity, and high stability, which make it become the preferred method for the detection of heavy metal ions. This review presents the recent progress in the field of heavy metal ions determination using various nanomaterials-enabled screen-printed electrochemical sensors. The fabrication strategy and analytical performance of carbon nanomaterials (such as carbon nanotubes and graphene), metal nanomaterials (such as gold nanoparticles and silver nanoparticles), and metal oxide nanomaterials (such as Fe3O4 nanoparticles and Bi2O3 nanoparticles)-enabled disposable sensors for electrochemical determination of heavy metal ions are summarized systematically. In addition, the application of these sensors in real samples for the analysis of heavy metal ions is discussed in detail, and the future development in this field is also provided.

Abstract:Sensitive and selective determination of heavy metal ions is an important research. Analytical detection techniques that are based on nanomaterials have shown advantages of simplicity, sensitivity, and low cost. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a newly emerging class of crystalline porous organic frameworks that are connected by organic monomers via covalent bonds. Currently, COFs nanocomposites have been extended to analytical sensing applications, especially the construction of sensors benefiting from their structural tailorability and diversity, large surface area, intrinsic stability, and tunable functionality. This review mainly summarizes the recent advances in COFs nanocomposites-based sensors for chemical detection of heavy metal ions. The unique advantages of COFs for chemical sensing are highlighted. Then, different types of chemical sensors for heavy metal ions based on fluorescence, colorimetry and electrochemistry are reviewed. Simultaneously, the analytical performances are summarized. Finally, a summary of the current achievements is given and further future research directions are outlined.

Abstract:Increasing demand for timely and accurate environmental pollution monitoring and control requires new sensing techniques with outstanding performance, i.e., high sensitivity, high selectivity, and reliability. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), also known as porous coordination polymers, are a fascinating class of highly ordered crystalline coordination polymers formed by the coordination of metal ions/clusters and organic bridging linkers/ligands. Owing to their unique structures and properties, i.e., high surface area, tailorable pore size, high density of active sites, and high catalytic activity, various MOF-based sensing platforms have been reported for environmental contaminant detection including anions, heavy metal ions, organic compounds, and gases. In this review, recent progress in MOF-based environmental sensors is introduced with a focus on optical, electrochemical, and field-effect transistor sensors. The sensors have shown unique and promising performance in water and gas contaminant sensing. Moreover, by incorporation with other functional materials, MOF-based composites can greatly improve the sensor performance. The current limitations and future directions of MOF-based sensors are also discussed.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are an extraordinarily versatile class of porous materials renowned for their intricate three-dimensional skeletal architectures and exceptional chemical properties. These extraordinary attributes have pushed MOFs into the vanguard of diverse disciplines such as microporous conduction, catalysis, separation, biomedical engineering, and electrochemical sensing. The focus of this review is to offer a comprehensive summary of recent advancements in designing MOF-based electrochemical sensors for detecting organic small molecules. offer a comprehensive survey of the recent progress in the methodologies adopted for the construction of MOF composites, covering template-assisted synthesis, Modification in synthesis, and post-synthesis modification. In addition, we discuss the practical application of MOF-based electrochemical sensors in the detection of organic small molecules. Our findings highlight the superior electrochemical sensing capabilities of these novel composites compared to those of their pristine counterparts. In conclusion, we provide a condensed perspective on the potential future trajectories in this domain, underscoring the impetus for continued enquiry and enhancement of MOF composite assemblies. With sustained investigation, the horizon appears bright for electrochemical sensing of small organic molecules and their myriad applications.

Abstract:The emission and accumulation of heavy metals have been damaging our living situation. The ultrasensitive detection for heavy metal ions is an important area as it can alarm for pollution to protect the environment and help individual health. Electrochemical sensors known as the potential detecting methods attract the researcher’s attention and combined with nanomaterial constitute an active research area that could give opportunities for further development in heavy metal detection performance. To this end, this research gives a brief introduction to nanomaterials-based electrochemical sensors developed in recent years and focuses on the detection mechanism, advantages of using certain materials, the reason to achieve specific detection, and the electrochemical performances including their advantages and drawbacks. Whether individual detection of Hg(II), Pb(II), or the simultaneous detection of multiple heavy metals, all of those electrode systems show a bright future in actual environmental monitoring with high sensitivity, good repeatability and chemical stability.

Abstract:Heavy metals pollution in water is a global environmental issue, which has threatened the human health and environment. Thus, it is important to remove them under practical water environment. In recent years, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with water-stable properties have attracted wide interest with regard to the capture of hazardous heavy metal ions in water. In this review, the synthesis strategy and postsynthesis modification preparation methods are first summarized for water-stable MOFs (WMOFs), and then the recent advances on the adsorption and photocatalytic reduction of heavy metal ions in water by WMOFs are reviewed. In contrast to the conventional adsorption materials, WMOFs not only have excellent adsorption properties, but also lead to photocatalytic reduction of heavy metal ions. WMOFs have coupling and synergistic effects on the adsorption and photocatalysis of heavy metal ions in water, which make it more effective in treating single pollutants or different pollutants. In addition, by introducing appropriate functional groups into MOFs or synthesizing MOF-based composites, the stability and ability to remove heavy metal ions of MOFs can be effectively enhanced. Although WMOFs and WMOF-based composites have made great progress in removing heavy metal ions from water, they still face many problems and challenges, and their application potential needs to be further improved in future research. Finally, this review aims at promoting the development and practical application of heavy metal ions removal in water by WMOFs.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as molecular crystalline materials have been extensively applied in various fields such as catalysis, separation, and biomedical engineering. However, the applications of MOFs materials are limited in electrochemical biosensing due to the poor conductivity, less selectivity, and lack of modification sites. By incorporating the functionalized nanoparticles into MOF structures, MOF-based composites are endowed with high electronic conductivity and strong catalytic activity, which process the advantages over single-component MOFs. With a particular focus on the electrochemical applications of MOF composites, this review summarizes the comprehensive guidelines on design of electroactive MOF composites: dopant modification of electroactive ligands, in situ synthesis of nanoparticle@MOF composites and post-modification of MOF structure. The illustrative examples of electroactive MOF composites in the last five years are highlighted in electrochemical, electrochemiluminescent, and photoelectrochemical biosensing. The prospects and challenges for future work are also included. Understanding the structure-function relationship of electroactive MOF composites benefits the design of next-generation electrochemical biosensors.

Abstract:The environmental pollution has become a serious issue because the pollutants can cause permanent damage to the DNA, nervous system, and circulating system, resulting in various incurable diseases, such as organ failure, malformation, angiocardiopathy, and cancer. The effective detection of environmental pollutants is urgently needed to keep them far away from daily life. Among the reported pollutant sensors, luminescent metal–organic frameworks (LMOFs) with tunable structures have attracted remarkable attention to detect the pollutants because of their excellent selectivity, sensitivity, and recyclability. Although lots of metal–organic framework (MOF)‐based luminescent sensors have been summarized and discussed in previous reviews, the detection of environmental pollutants, especially radioactive ions and heavy metal ions, still have not been systematically presented. Here, the sensing mechanisms and construction principles of luminescent MOFs are discussed, and the state‐of‐the‐art MOF‐based luminescent sensors of environmental pollutants, including pesticides, antibiotics, explosives, VOCs, toxic gas, toxic small molecules, radioactive ions, and heavy metal ions are highlighted. This comprehensive review may further guide the development of luminescent MOFs and promote their practical applications for sensing environmental pollutants.

Abstract:The high speed of contaminants growth needs the burgeoning of new analytical techniques to keep up with the continuous demand for monitoring and legislation on food safety and environmental pollution control. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a kind of advanced crystal porous materials with controllable apertures, which are self-assembled by organic ligands and inorganic metal nodes. They have the merits of large specific surface areas, high porosity and the diversity of structures and functions. Latterly, the utilization of metal-organic frameworks has attracted much attention in environmental protection and the food industry. MOFs have exhibited great value as sensing materials for many targets. Among many sensing methods, fluorometric sensing is one of the widely studied methods in the detection of harmful substances in food and environmental samples. Fluorometric detection based on MOFs and its functional materials is currently one of the most key research subjects in the food and environmental fields. It has gradually become a hot research direction to construct the highly sensitive rapid sensors to detect harmful substances in the food matrix based on metal-organic frameworks. In this paper, we introduced the synthesis and detection application characteristics (absorption, fluorescence, etc.) of metal-organic frameworks. We summarized their applications in the MOFs-based fluorometric detection of harmful substances in food and water over the past few years. The harmful substances mainly include heavy metals, organic pollutants and other small molecules, etc. On this basis, the future development and possible application of the MOFs have prospected in this review paper.

Abstract:As heavy metal ions severely harm human health, it is important to develop simple, sensitive and accurate methods for their detection in environment and food. Electrochemical detection featured with short analytical time, low power cost, high sensitivity and easy adaptability for in-situ measurement is one of the most developed methods. This review introduces briefly the recent achievements in electrochemical sensing of heavy metal ions with inorganic, organic and bio-materials modified electrodes. In particular, the unique properties of inorganic nanomaterials, organic small molecules or their polymers, enzymes and nucleic acids for detection of heavy metal ions are highlighted. By employing some representative examples, the design and sensing mechanisms of these electrodes are discussed.
