Abstract:SG( Smart Grid) is the inevitable trend of the electrical power system. Its core idea is "smart",but SG is not "smart"enough yet. In recent years,the AI( Artificial Intelligence) technology has made breakthrough progress,providing great opportunities and powerful support for the development of SG. For this reason,a novel concept,"SG+"( Smart Grid Plus),is proposed. It is an upgraded version of SG with higher and deeper intelligence by drawing support from AI. It will further improve the safety,efficiency and sustainability of the electrical power system.The research and development progresses of AI technology are reviewed. It is pointed out that AI is not a panacea,nor is it incompetent. After a review of the development progress of SG,the key trends in SG are highlighted. One is the integration of high proportion of renewable generations,power electronic devices and active loads,the other is the combination of multiple-energy carriers,multiple-energy networks,and multiple operating modes. Finally,the applications of AI,particularly the 3rd generation technologies such as deep learning,in the electrical power systems are reviewed. Moreover,the research topics of "SG+"are discussed and prospected.

Abstract:Smart grids (SGs) are reforming towards utilizing massive data for operations and services. During this reform, the information and communication technologies (ICTs) play a critical role, especially for the computing model, which determines how data analytics in SG can be executed. Edge computing (EC), a novel computing paradigm innovation, has high potential to help with the digitization of SG. This paper seeks to provide a comprehensive review of interdisciplinary research on EC applications in SG. First, an in-depth analysis of EC, including the definition, architectures, characteristics, and key enabling technologies is conducted from the perspective of SG application requirements. Afterward, this paper systematically explores application scenarios of EC in SG based on its characteristics. Beyond that, the synergistic effect of the integration of EC and SG is also assessed: SG not only benefits from EC but also supports EC to become sustainable. Challenges and open questions are then investigated.

Abstract:Energy becoming more and more crucial and critical in the civilized populations and locates itself as one of the major requirements of living standards. Obtaining the energy from fossil fuels still is one of the common sources of energy production; however, there is a common understanding of increasing the potential use of renewables, carbon capture and storage, energy efficiency and intelligence and smart applications for collecting, distributing and transmission of the energy between the supply and demand locations. Those applications and generating the new policies, roadmaps in order to make an energy revolution and increase the usage of low-carbon energy technologies targeting the decrease of energy related emissions. In this chapter, the authors explains the common issues about smart grid and demand side management and possible use artificial intelligence and metaheuristic algorithms for smart grid and demand side management optimization and scheduling.

Abstract:Migration from today's power systems to future smart grids is a necessity as the energy demand continues to grow and an increasing amounts of renewable energies need to be accommodated in the grid. One of the key enablers of the smart grid is the integration of information and communication technology (ICT) into the grids in order to monitor and control power generation, distribution, and demand. Considering the close interdependence of future smart grids and communication networks, there is a need for numerical simulation to thoroughly understand the impact of the communication networks on the performance of power system dynamics, and vice versa. This paper provides an overview of available simulation techniques for smart grid communications with a focus on cosimulation frameworks and their enabling technologies. A decision tree comparing relative advantages of available cosimulation platforms and providing guidelines on how to select from them for a given application is presented. A case study analyzing agent-based shipboard smart grid protections with VPNET is presented.

Abstract:The multi-site smart substation has the characteristics of intelligent operation and maintenance, data fusion and economic efficiency, which can meet the needs of intelligent, digital and zero-carbon development. Thus, this paper establishes a multi-site smart substation scheme based on digital and physical simulation technology. First, it analyzes the intelligent operation and maintenance application of operation, inspection and defect identification in the intelligent operation and maintenance of the substation, and the data fusion application to improve the information judgment ability. The economical and efficient application of carbon photovoltaics; secondly, the data model, 3D model and simulation model of digital and physical simulation technology are analyzed; finally, the economy, intelligence and effectiveness of multi-site smart substations are verified by practical example simulation.
