Abstract:This chapter provides an overview of how different heat exchanger types, problems, and networks are analyzed. Heat exchangers are categorized by shape, flow arrangement, area to volume ratio, and channel size. The problem type depends on what information is available and what is sought. The heat exchanger networks can be arranged in numerous ways. For analyzing heat exchangers, three methods, LMTD correction factor, ε-NTU, and heat exchanger efficiency, are reviewed in this chapter. In their basic form, all three methods are based on the first law of thermodynamics, using average fluid properties and transversally averaged temperature, considering only axial temperature change. Since all three methods use the same equations and are based on the same assumptions, they differ only in the way that the results are presented. Historically, the choice of the method used depended on the type of problem under consideration; however using computers and equations solvers, each of the methods can be used to solve any heat exchanger problem, as long as the expressions for LMTD correction factors, ε-NTU relations, or the heat exchanger efficiency expressions are available. The chapter also provides an overview of the compact heat exchangers as well as microchannel heat exchangers.

Compact heat exchangers (CHEs) technologies are expected to be one of the solutions for the new generation heat exchanger. In this paper are presented of the compact heat exchanger, Plate-fin heat exchanger, and Printed Circuit Heat Exchanger. And computation fluid dynamic is used which offers an alternative to the quick and inexpensive solution for the design and optimization of compact heat exchangers.

Abstract:In this chapter, a new methodology for heat exchanger networks synthesis, extending traditional pinch technology to include exergy-destruction cost, is described and employed for practical applications. In the proposed approach, the cost rate of exergy destruction substitutes the utility cost in a trade-off between the operating and capital costs in the conventional pinch analysis to determine the optimum minimum approach temperature, ΔTmin, in the energy assessment of heat exchanger networks (HENs). It is demonstrated that the balanced composite curves can be used directly in the calculation of the exergy destruction, heat recovery, and heat-transfer area for a specified minimum approach temperature. Moreover, it is showed that the grand composite curve can be utilized for determination of the optimal external utility allocation. The inclusion of thermal exergy destruction into pinch analysis decreases the optimum value of network ΔTmin, due to increase in the system operating costs by considering both the external utility requirements and internal exergy destruction. The results of this assessment provide a better and more realistic utilization of external utilities considers the required capital investment. Two case studies are presented to show how to apply the proposed methodology effectively and practically. Case studies are analyzed using Aspen energy analyzer software.

Abstract:Recent advances in manufacturing methods open the possibility for broader use of metal foams and metal matrix composites (MMCs) for heat exchangers, and these materials can have tailored material properties. Metal foams in particular combine a number of interesting properties from a heat exchanger's point of view. In this paper, the material properties of metal foams and MMCs are surveyed, and the current state of the art is reviewed for heat exchanger applications. Four different applications are considered: liquid-liquid, liquid-gas, and gas-gas heat exchangers and heat sinks. Manufacturing and implementation issues are identified and discussed, and it is concluded that these materials hold promise both for heat exchangers and heat sinks, but that some key issues still need to be solved before broad-scale application is possible.

Abstract:The design of plate-fin and tube-fin crossflow heat exchangers is discussed. The transfer surface area of crossflow heat exchangers is used ineffectively because of the nonuniform distribution of the heat transfer across the volume of the exchanger. The optimal distribution of the transfer surface area for maximum heat exchanger effectiveness and constant total surface area is determined. It is found that a Dirac delta distribution of the transfer surface aligned along the diagonal of the crossflow exchanger gives the best performance; equal to that of a counterflow device. Design guidelines for optimal area allocation within crossflow heat exchangers are established. Compared to conventional designs, designs following these guidelines may lead to either a higher exchanger effectiveness for equal pressure drops and surface area, reduced pressure drops for equal exchanger effectiveness, or reduced weight and a near cubic form of the exchanger core for equal pressure drops and effectiveness.

Abstract:The heat exchanger (HE) is a device that is used to complete the process of heat transfer between different matters without direct mixing. Therefore, it is of great importance in the transfer of energy and the completion of various energy transition processes. In the processes of HE between different energy systems, many factors influence and play a major and important role in the efficiency of transformation and exchange in forms of energy, such as the length, the material type, the exchange fluid, the surrounding environment, and many other factors. In this work, the effect of the HE length of the parallel and counter flow HEs was investigated based on the use of computer simulation programs. There was a significant impact of the exchange factors, especially the length of the HEs in both the parallel and counter-flow HEs, on the quality and efficiency of the HE and the temperature distribution. The overall evaluation shows that by increasing the length of the HE for both parallel and counter-flow HEs, the heat transfer is increased and the heat distribution becomes more homogeneous, which aids in enhancing the transfer of energy efficiency inside the HEs. Abstract:The equivalent thermal resistance of a heat exchanger is defined based on the concept of the entransy dissipation rate, which measures the irreversibility of heat transfer for the purpose of object heating or cooling, rather than from the heat to work conversion. The relationships between the heat exchanger effectiveness and the thermal resistance (or conductance) are developed, which do not depend on its flow arrangement, and hence useful for the performance comparison among heat exchangers with different flow arrangements. In addition, such relationships bridge a gap between the heat exchanger irreversibility and its effectiveness. The monotonic decrease of the effectiveness with increasing the thermal resistance shows that the heat exchanger irreversibility can be described by its thermal resistance when evaluated from the transport process viewpoint, while the so-called entropy generation paradox occurs, if the irreversibility is measured by the entropy generation number for a heat exchanger.

Abstract:Heat transfer is one of the key aspects of machineries, devices and industrial processes for maintaining their functionality and also for achieving better product quality. Hence, heat exchangers of different types and sizes are used in these applications with the purpose of removing the extra process/device heat to maintain the desirable working temperatures. However, the size of a heat exchanger is a major consideration for any type of process/device as it decides the space requirements (i.e., the size) of the machine/device or the processing plant. At first, this study aims to investigate the design procedure of a heat exchanger theoretically and then its performance will be analyzed and optimized using computational fluid dynamics. For the design purposes, a counter flow heat exchanger was considered and its length was theoretically calculated with the LMTD method while the pressure drop and energy consumption were also calculated with the Kern method. Afterwards, a computational model of the same heat exchanger was implemented with ANSYS and then this model was extended to six different models by altering its key design parameters for the optimization purposes. Eventually, these models were used to analyze the heat transfer behavior, mass flow rates, pressures drops, flow velocities and vortices of shell and tube flows inside the heat exchanger. Theoretical and CFD results showed only a 1.05% difference in terms of the cooling performance of the hot fluid. The axial pressure drops showed positive correlations with both the overall heat transfer coefficient and pumping power demand. Overall, the results of this study confirms that CFD modelling can be promising for design and optimization of heat exchangers and it allows testing of numerous design options without fabricating physical prototypes.

Abstract:We design heat exchangers using level-set method based topology optimization. The heat exchange between two fluids in separate channels is maximized while constraining the pressure drop across each channel. The flow is modeled by an incompressible Navier-Stokes-Brinkmann equation and the heat transfer is modeled by a convection-diffusion equation with high Peclet number. Each fluid region is subject to its own set of Navier-Stokes-Brinkmann equations where the Brinkmann term models the other fluid as solid, thereby preventing mixing. A level-set defines the interface that separates the two fluids. The Hamilton-Jacobi equation advects the level-set, allowing for topological changes of the channels. The velocity of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation is defined by the shape derivatives of the cost and constraint functions with respect to normal interface perturbations. We present results in three-dimensions with different heat exchanger configurations and operating conditions.

Abstract:Shell and tube heat exchanger is a pivotal equipment used in industries for heat transfer. Any effort to minimize the irreversibility in the heat exchanger will enhance the performance and leads to energy optimization and cost savings. In the current study, a water to water, segmental baffled shell and tube heat exchanger was considered for an investigation and designed using the Kern method. Exergy analysis and advanced exergy analysis was carried out to understand the performance of the heat exchanger and to determine the possibility of reducing irreversibilities. The results of the exergy analysis showed that the system has 684.6 kW of exergy destruction. Advanced exergy analysis was carried out through endogenous and exogenous modes and subsequently performed for avoidable and unavoidable components. Majority of the exergy destruction in the heat exchanger is avoidable. The results showed that 97.5 % of the total exergy destruction is of endogenous avoidable type. The system can be improved by changing the system configuration, design variables, mass flow rates, materials, and many other parameters. Subsequently, the exergy destruction in the pumps is unavoidable and no further design improvements are required.

Abstract:A heat exchanger is a device used to transfer thermal energy between two or more fluids, at different temperatures in thermal contact. This paper focuses on a shell-and-tubes heat exchanger that involves two fluids (hot water and cold water) in contact with each other while the cold water flows through the tubes and hot water through the shell. Heat exchangers have special and practical applications in the feed water cooler in the process industries, power plants, chemical plants, refineries, process applications as well as refrigeration and air conditioning industry. The design calculations were carried out to determine the specifications of essential parameters for the development of the heat exchanger, data generated from the theoretical formulae were used to fabricate the heat exchanger using some locally available and durable materials, and the performance of the system was evaluated. Some of the parameters evaluated include heat duty, capacity ratio, effectiveness, overall heat transfer coefficient, and fouling factor. The heat exchanger was tested under various flow conditions and the results obtained were as follows; cold water inlet temperatures of (26, 26, 26, 27and 27) oC increased to (59, 44, 39, 47 and 35) oC after (10, 71⁄2, 61⁄2 8, and 6) minutes and the hot water temperatures decreased from (100, 80, 75, 87 and 73) oC to (73, 59, 55, 62 and 50) oC, respectively. The design data and test data were compared in terms of the heat duty, capacity ratio, effectiveness, overall heat transfer coefficient, and fouling factor, the deviation is found to be 22.87%, 13.99%, 8.98%, 43.30%, and 43.30% respectively. The results obtained proved that the heat exchanger was effective, reliable and provides a good technical approach to evaluate the thermal performance of the heat exchanger and useful in conducting heat and mass transfer practical in thermodynamics laboratory.

Abstract:Heat exchangers are the apparatus which is widely used in various industries. They transmit heat among two or more fluid streams. Theoretical analysis done by Kern’s method has been done on Shell and tube heat exchanger with segmental baffle and then experimented in CFD to check Heat Transfer rate and pressure drop with varying number of baffles which is 6, 8 and 10, and by keeping all the rest of parameters constant. It is found that as the number of baffles increase heat transfer rate increases also pressure drop is increases significantly. To optimize model in next step, CFD analysis is has been done by varying baffle cut to 25%, 35% and 45% by keeping same number of baffles which found best in heat transfer rate in earlier Kern’s method. Other parameters like velocity, temperature, pressure and baffle numbers are kept constant. Results obtained from numerical solution are analysed extensively to get the effect of baffle cut on heat transfer rate and pressure drop on shell side. The pressing need of the heat exchanger industry, the tradeoff optimization between the pressure drop and the heat transfer coefficient has been studied to provide an idea to get effects of the change in two parameters, namely, baffle spacing and baffle cut simultaneously and observe how these two will affect the performance of an STHX. An attempt to find the optimum geometric configuration has been carried out with number of baffles. Increasing baffles for same length of shell and baffle cut increases from 25% to 35%, heat transfer rate increases. It is beneficial in elucidating that a higher heat transfer coefficient can be obtained for fewer baffles when coupled with the appropriate baffle cut. So selection of correct optimized shell and tube heat exchanger. The work is carried out for copper tube bundles and steel shell. So optimization of baffle cut with correct number of baffles and reduction in pressure drop studied with CFD tool.

Abstract:In line with population expansion and industrial development, the world's energy consumption has been rising gradually over the past three decades. As a result, methods for energy conservation have been sought. One of the most common strategies is heat recovery, which is efficient and cost-effective to the extent possible. Heat recovery is not just about saving energy for primary consumption; it is also about lowering emissions and protecting the environment. In this respect, one of the most important strategies for heat recovery is to develop heat exchangers and exploit the energy associated with many of the processes' output products in order to use it in new processes. Many researchers working in the field of heat engineering are now looking into novel heat transfer techniques. Use of the heat exchanger as a compact is one of these ways that might be considered. The current review therefore concentrates on the design of plate-fin heat exchangers (PFHE) and multi-stream plate-fin heat exchangers (MSPFHE) based on various models. The current review offers some suggestions for upcoming studies on improving heat transfer and minimizing power use.

Abstract:Heat exchangers are crucial devices that are used to exchange heat between two different fluids: one that is hot and one that is cold. Amongst them, finned tube heat exchangers play a vital role in today’s thermal industry. Due to the increased surface area of the tubes' outer surface (or fins) when utilizing finned tube heat exchangers, the heat transfer rate may be improved as a consequence of the increased surface area of the fins. It is often referred to as a compact heat exchanger in order to highlight the comparatively large heat transfer surface area to volume ratio of the exchanger. They have many vital applications in the field of refrigeration, air conditioning, IC engines, and power plants. The fin and tube heat exchanger has been analyzed for three different cases in the present study: preheater, condenser, and evaporator. The Engineering Equation Solver (EES) software has been used to analyze the heat exchanger for the various thermal, hydrodynamic, and design parameters. Results have been plotted by comparing the various thermal parameters such as overall and inside heat transfer coefficient, Nusselt number, and rate of heat transfer with respect to Reynolds number. Similarly, the hydrodynamic parameters such as Colburn factor, friction factor, and the design parameters such as the number of fins and fin spacing.

Abstract:The potential for the overall optimization of heat exchanger systems for process plants is considered. By using a more systematic approach, considerable savings in energy and capital may be possible. The next section of the paper deals with the scope for improvement of existing heat exchanger designs with particular reference to shell-and-tube heat exchangers and tube-in-plate heat exchangers. In the future, there is likely to be an increasing trend toward modularization and examples cited here are those of the plate exchanger and the heat pipe heat exchanger. Perhaps the most important unsolved problem is that of heat exchanger fouling and this area is discussed next. Costs of fouling in the U.K. are likely to be in the range of £300M to £500M☆ per annum. A number of research tools are becoming available for the study of heat exchange systems and two of these (namely electrochemical analogue techniques and numerical flow modeling) are reviewed in the final section of the paper.

Abstract:Heat exchanger is one amongst promising thermal device in which heat transfer takes place between hot fluid and cold fluid. Among various classifications of warmth exchangers, the main focus was shown by researchers on indirect contact type compact heat exchangers. Among them the shell and tube device belongs to fluid to fluid type heat transfer device. Main applications of shell and tube device feed device in process industries, refineries, chemical plants and power plants. Usually the analysis of shell and tube heat exchangers are divided into two parts namely shell side and tube side analysis. Shell side analysis is easy and doesn't involve much modification. Whereas the tube side analysis is complex and it's done by varying baffle design and elevation with regard to arrangements of tubes. The most disadvantage of shell and tube device is pressure drop which occur at the end of tubes. To overcome this problem, drilled cylindrical copper block has been introduced to switch the tube part through which the new fluid flows and therefore the cold fluid is circulated through the shell. With this design modification, the effectiveness, mass rate, overall heat transfer co efficient are simulated and analysed.

Abstract:Abstract The paper introduces a novel method for generalized heat exchanger design and evaluation, freeing the process from predefined geometries. It aims to facilitate early-stage conceptual exploration, allowing the designer to make informed decisions. The paper explores heat transfer and fluid friction principles in order to set key parameters for estimating aerothermal performance, introduced by LaHaye. Arguing against a single metric, the paper proposes a custom cost function for evaluating the integrated generalized heat exchanger. A case study applies the method to a particular aircraft engine scenario, using cost functions to evaluate intercooler designs based on pressure loss and heat transfer surface weight. The study determines suitable heat exchanger families for further development, considering factors like finned area, compactness and flow distribution.

Incorporating a blower into the system results in improved air circulation and effective heat transfer. By placing the band heater in a strategic location, air is heated precisely and locally, which helps to create a more responsive and controlled heating process. One essential tool for assessing the system's thermal and fluid dynamics is CFD analysis.
