Abstract:Phosphorus (P) sediment sorption is regarded as the most important buffering process against P increases in overlying water. In this study, two shallow eutrophic sediments (Mei and Hua) with distinct compositions were selected to assess effects of pH (from 6 to 9) and ionic strength (IS) (0, 0.001, 0.01 and 0.1M KCl) on P sorption. In Mei sediments, the P sorption decreased as pH increased (6.97-9.13), but it increased as IS increased over the pH range in question. These results could be attributed to the negatively charged surface of Mei sediments, as indicated by the salt titration curve, and the high cation exchange capacity (CEC). P sorption in Hua sediments was facilitated by a pH increase (6.12-7.49), but it was hindered by an IS increase. A reasonable explanation for this phenomenon is that calcium phosphate precipitates at high pHs and that Cl- exchanges with P because the surface is weakly charged (small CEC). These results indicate that the sediment P sorption may have trends opposite to one another in relation to the salt change (e.g. drought and rainy season) in the lake water between the two sediments. These data provide additional support to explain P concentration variations in lakes.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to determine the capacity of sorption and release of phosphorus(P) in the marshlands sediments.The sorption characteristics and kinetics equations were obtained by incubating sediments collected from four marshland sites in Pelham Bay Park,New York,USA.The results showed that there was a significant relationship between sorption and original P contamination level in the solution,and the capacity of P desorption in the sediments was limited,which ranged from 0 to 30 mg per kilogram sediment.The adsorption isotherm curves were fit to Langmuir equation as well as Freundlich equation.The EPC0 of the four marshland sediments ranged from 0.03 to 0.86 μg/ L in order of S2(0.86 μg /L)S1(0.10 μg/ L) S3(0.04 μg/ L)S4(0.03 μg/ L).The capacity of different sediments to sorption P was in order of S4S3S1S2.The difference in sorption capacity might be explained by fact that there is not the organic matter in S2 sediment,and S1 was located in acid area(pH=4.1),while S3 and S4 were located in alkaline area(pH7.0).In conclusion,the sediments in alkaline area have the strong ability to sorption P from the solution;the ability to desorption P was comparatively limited.The risk of eutrophic water body caused by P desorption of marshlands sediments in alkaline area was low.
Properties of phosphorus retention in sediments under different hydrological regimes: A laboratory-scale simulation study

Abstract:Excessive nutrient loading and changing hydrological regimes can significantly impact the ecological function of wetland ecosystems. Three wetland sediment samples collected from West Lake, Xiazhuhu Wetland and Baoyang River in the Taihu Lake Watershed, China, were compared to understand the P retention properties responding to hydrological regimes by using static column and steady-flow flume laboratory-scale experiments. Sediment in Xiazhuhu Wetland currently function as a P sink with equilibrium P concentration (EPC0) values of 0.010mgL−1, while sediments from West Lake and Baoyang River, have EPC0 values of 0.050mgL−1 and 0.023mgL−1, respectively, and serve as an internal P source. The P retention by sediments ranged from 17.20 to 22.61mgm−2d−1 under 35-d static conditions, while sediment beds continuously fed by the simulated inflow water containing 2mgL−1 P ranged from 59.20 to 171.93mgm−2d−1. The P removal capacities by sediments were higher during the rainy season than the dry season when wetlands were subjected to excessive P input. Since the majority of external P stored in sediment is in the form of Al-P (e.g., for Xiazhuhu wetland), the application of alum to water column could potentially increase the P retention capacity of sediment.

Abstract:Surface waters in Taihu Basin, China are increasingly threatened by phosphorus (P) related eutrophication. This study investigated the temporal-spatial status of P in sediment-water in riparian wetlands located in the southern region of Taihu Basin. Two sets of laboratory simulation study, 1) static columns and 2) steady-flow flumes representing wetland in both dry and rainy seasons, were carried out to understand the characteristics and mechanisms of P interaction between sediment and overlying water. In wetland sediments, significant increases in total P (TP) and NaHCO3 (pH=8.5) extractable P (Olsen-P) occurred with the increase of NaOH+EDTA extractable P (NaOH+EDTA-P). After comparing the P adsorption capacity (Q(max)) with TP in the sediment, there could be a risk of P export from the sediment. In the static column experiment, dynamic characteristics of dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP) in the overlying water can be divided into buffer reaction, rapid adsorption, and slow adsorption. A quasi U-pattern curve was observed in the steady-flow flume experiment, i.e., DRP in the overlying water decreased initially and then increased. Because upstream water with high P concentration flowed over the test wetland during rainy seasons, the ecological role of P interception by the sediment could be weakened.

Abstract:This study was designed to survey the reservoir sediment properties, assess the phosphorus (P) sorption isotherm, and analyze the relationship between sediment properties and sorption parameters. Physicochemical analysis indicated that sediment from the FUSHI reservoir in Zhejiang Province, China, has similar physical and chemical properties and has been contaminated by P. Sorption isotherm experiments showed that the sorption process could be described by Langmuir and Freundlich models. The parameters of Q max (Phosphorus sorption maximum) and K (Freundlich adsorption isotherm constant) ranged from 618.98 to 825.70 mg kg −1 and 114.18 to 170.74 l kg −1 , respectively. EPC 0 (zero P equilibrium concentration) ranged from 0.14 to 0.24 mg l −1 , more than the total P concentration in the water of the reservoir. Thus, the reservoir sediment releases P into the water and acts as a “P resource”. The clay, Fe o , Al t , and Fe t + Al t content were the main active components in P sorption. Q max had a highly significant positive relationship with some properties and could be estimated by a combination of these.
Kinetics of Phosphorous Sorption by Sediment in a Subtropical Reservoir

Abstract:The kinetics of phosphorus sorption by sediments collected from the FUSHI reservoir in China was conducted to assess the sorption process and characteristics. Experiments showed that the sorption process consisted of fast sorption, slow sorption and equilibrium stages. Duration of each stage ranged from 10 min to 10 h. The kinetic process could be described by pseudo first-order, pseudo second-order and Evolich function. In the sorption process, ion exchange and ligand exchange were the dominant sorption actions. Sorption amount, sorption rate and sorption efficiency all increased with increasing initial concentration and decreased with extending sorption time. During the initial 0.25 h, sorption rate reached a maximum with 152.63 and 83.39 mg/(kg h(-1)) while concentration were 0.5 and 0.3 mg/L, respectively. About 43.10-79.36 and 37.17-19.09 % of the sorption were completed in the fast stage and slow stage under concentration as 0.3 and 0.5 mg/L.

Abstract:The availability of phosphorus (P) in lakes is dependent on the sorption characteristics of the underlying sediments. Temperature is a crucial factor affecting the P sorption in sediments. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of temperature on sorption of P by sediments from two eutrophic lakes. The study was carried out using short-term batch experiments at 4, 20 and 30°C. Phosphorus sorption kinetics, isotherms, fractionation and desorption were investigated. The P sorption was dependent on sediment type and temperature (p<0.001). The Mei sediments showed a higher sorption rate and sorption capacity than Hua sediments. The P sorption kinetics were best described by a pseudo second order model (R2>0.97). Activation energies derived from the kinetics rate constant indicated that P sorption onto the two sediments was controlled by a diffusion process. For both sediments, Freundlich model fit the P sorption isotherms well and the calculated apparent sorption heat was 6.37kJmol−1 for Mei sediments and 8.67kJmol−1 for Hua sediments. This indicated that P sorption onto both sediments was endothermic. Adding P significantly increased the soluble and loosely bound P (S/L–P), aluminum-bound P (Al–P) and iron-bound P (Fe–P) (p<0.05). The amount of Al–P and Fe–P was markedly higher at 30°C than at 4°C (p<0.05). Subsequent P desorption indicated that adsorbed P was highly labile, in particular for Hua sediment. The degree of P mobility that occurred during sediment sorption was inversely related to the temperature at the time of sorption. A significant relationship (R2=0.978) between phosphorus sorption maximum and oxalate-extractable Fe and Al at different temperatures reflects that the amorphous contents of Fe and Al are responsible for the temperature effect on P sorption.
Characteristics of Phosphorus Sorption Kinetics on Sediments at Different Initial Phosphorus Concentrations

Abstract:Two different sediments(Meiliangwan and Huajiachi) were selected to study the effect of initial P concentration(C0) on P sorption kinetics and to identify the corresponding sorption kinetic type.Kinetics studies were carried out using an agitated batch method.The kinetics of sorption were followed based on the amounts of P adsorbed at various time intervals.The data were analyzed using pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order equations.The results showed that: 1) for the Meiliangwan sediment,the process belonged to a two-stage dynamic: an initial fast exchange of P followed by a much slower process,and its sorption quantity was much larger than that of the Huajiachi sediment,which could be seen as chemical sorption.For the Huajiachi sediment,the sorption process was slow and had a small absorbing capacity,which belonged to physical sorption,and the data points fluctuated greatly;2) the zero equilibrium P concentration(EPC0) in the Meiliangwan and Huajiachi sediments was 0.03 and 0.42 mg·L-1,respectively.When C0 EPC0,the sediment desorbed P,or else the sediment adsorbed P;3) the sorption data in the Meiliangwan and Huajiachi sediment followed pseudo-second order and pseudo-first order kinetic model respectively by investigating the theoretical criteria and comparing standard residual error and correlation coefficient;4) the sorption quantity and sorption rate of sediments increased with increasing C0.Besides,the higher the C0 value was,the longer time was required to achieve equilibrium.From the relationship between C0 and kinetic parameters,generalized predictive models for P adsorbed onto sediments at any contact time and initial P concentration within the given range were proposed.These equations could then be used to derive the amount of P adsorbed at any given ion concentration and the reaction time.It will be helpful to understand the P transfer differences between sediments.
Effects of Ph and Eh on Release of Nitrogen and Phosphorus from Sediments of West Lake

Abstract:The effects of pH and Eh on release of nitrogen and phosphorus from sediments of West Lake under different conditions were investigated by simulation test. Results showed that the net flux of NH 4 + -N release from sediments increased with pH, but NO 3 − -N showed negative-going release at all tested pH levels. The net flux of NH 4 + -N release from sediments was higher under anaerobic or aerobic condition of the overlying water, but only under aerobic condition would net release of NO 3 − -N occur. It was also shown that phosphorus released was mainly in its inorganic form, higher pH and anaerobic conditions of overlying water greatly stimulated release of phosphorus. In situ measurement at several West Lake locations indicated that sediment resuspension induced by boat propeller stimulated nutrients release from sediment into overlying water.

Abstract:In the early stage of eutrophication, the coexistence of “grass and algae” in lakes is obvious. Understanding the P sorption–desorption behavior in natural sediments during the ecologically sensitive transition period has important scientific value for predicting the deterioration of lake ecosystems and formulating restoration measures, but the related mechanisms are still unclear. In this study, the analysis results of sedimentary dissolved organic matter (DOM) fractions, extractable Fe (hydr)oxide fractions and P adsorption experiments showed that sedimentary DOM fractions, especially the tyrosine-like protein fractions and microbial humic-like fractions, played a part in determining the EPC0 and Kd values of sediments in the plateau lake environment. The compound effect of amorphous Fe (hydr)oxides and sedimentary OM affected the increase of sedimentary P adsorption. Interestingly, these phenomena were strongly correlated with water depth. Furthermore, the distribution of water depth to aquatic plants indirectly regulated the values of sedimentary EPC0 and Kd. Meanwhile, the ability of submerged plants to control the sedimentary EPC0 and Kd values will be forced to shift shallowly, thereby forcing a significant reduction of areas with low EPC0 and high Kd values. This not only enhanced the risk of endogenous P release in lakes, but also accelerated the further deterioration of aquatic ecosystems. Therefore, studying the long-term scale changes of sedimentary EPC0 and Kd values can help to understand the duration of the lake ecological transition period and prevent the transitional deterioration of ecosystem.

Abstract:The content and adsorption capacity of phosphorus in the surface and bottom sediments of the karst wetland were monitored for two months. The results indicated that the total phosphorus concentration in the sediments varied from 217.15 to 1511.84 mg kg‐1 and 353.64 to 1650.26 mg kg‐1 in summer and autumn, respectively. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm of phosphorus by wetland sediments were systematically studied. The adsorption isotherm conformed well to the Langmuir isotherm model. The maximal adsorption capacity (Qmax), background adsorbed phosphorus (NAP) and equilibrium concentrations (EPCe) in sediments were strongly affected by Eh, pH, the content of inorganic phosphorus (IP), and organic phosphorus (Or‐P). The results of this research will shed light on understanding the biogeochemistry behaviour of phosphorus at the sediment‐water interface in karst wetland, and the water purification mechanism in wetland sediments on a global scale.

Abstract:The adsorption isotherm and the mechanism of the buffering effect are important controls on phosphorus (P) behaviors in estuaries and are important for estimating phosphate concentrations in aquatic environments. In this paper, we derive phosphate adsorption isotherms in order to investigate sediment adsorption and buffering capacity for phosphorus discharged from sewage outfalls in the Yangtze Estuary and Hangzhou Bay near Shanghai, China. Experiments were also carried out at different temperatures in order to explore the buffering effects for phosphate. The results show that P sorption in sediments with low fine particle fractions was best described using exponential equations. Some P interactions between water and sediment may be caused by the precipitation of CaHPO4 from Ca2+ and HPO42− when the phosphate concentration in the liquid phase is high. Results from the buffering experiments suggest that the Zero Equilibrium Phosphate Concentrations (EPC0) vary from 0.014 mg L−1 to 0.061 mg L−1, which are consistent with measured phosphate concentrations in water samples collected at the same time as sediment sampling. Values of EPC0 and linear sorption coefficients (K) in sediments with high fine particle and organic matter contents are relatively high, which implies that they have high buffering capacity. Both EPC0 and K increase with increasing temperature, indicating a higher P buffering capacity at high temperatures.

Abstract:In wastewater stabilization ponds, sedimentary phosphorus usually presents significant release and adsorption differences from that in lakes. However, their mobile potentials in stabilization pond have seldom been studied. In this study, the transformation characteristics of sedimentary phosphate in a wastewater stabilization pond are studied. The adsorption and release potential under different pH and Eh conditions is investigated and possible mechanisms involved are also proposed. Additionally, the forming process of iron-bound-phosphorus with Eh steadily increasing is also discussed. Results of this study show that the binding capability of each phosphorus fraction differed greatly under different pH conditions as follows: iron–phosphorus (Fe–P) and aluminium–phosphorus (Al–P) possessed the greatest binding capability at pH 7–8; and organic phosphorus extracted at alkaline conditions (OPalk) and calcium–phosphorus (Ca–P) showed the greatest binding capability at pH 5 and pH 9, respectively. Mainly through changing the proportion of Fe(III) in Total-Fe and the subsequent binding of its possible forms with phosphate, Eh can effectively affect the adsorptive and releasing behaviors of sedimentary phosphorus. With Eh increasing from −650mV to −50mV, Fe(II) was gradually oxidized to Fe(III), and Fe(III)–P significantly formed at the same time. Furthermore, the results show that there was no Eh threshold for phosphorus adsorption with increasing Eh.
Influences of Sediment Properties and Macrophytes on Phosphorous Speciation in the Intertidal Marsh

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) in wetlands is mainly bound to sediment in various species, which is essential to predict water column P levels. The purpose of this work is to understand the influences of sediment properties and vegetation types on P speciation. Sediments under four vegetation types in the tidal flat and offshore sandbar in Hangzhou Bay of China were collected seasonally. The rank order of P species in sediment based on concentration was exchangeable P (Exch-P)<iron/aluminum-bound P (Fe/Al-P)<organic P (Org-P)<calcium-bound P (Ca-P). Sediment total phosphorus (TP) and Fe/Al-P concentrations were lower in offshore sandbar than those of tidal flat, reflecting effects of anthropogenic contamination in the latter. Sediment particle size distribution strongly affected P speciation, as indicated by a significant correlation between them. Total phosphorus and Org-P concentrations in vegetated sediments were higher than those of bare mudflat. Additionally, there was a significant negative correlation between Ca-P and Org-P, and Fe/Al-P, indicating the presence of vegetation which may result in P speciation by converting Ca-P to soluble and active P and higher Org-P. Overall, sediment particle size distribution is the most fundamental physical property that affects P speciation, and vegetation types are important factors that influence Org-P concentration.

Abstract:The effects of sediment aluminum (Al), organic carbon (OC), and dissolved oxygen (DO) on phosphorus (P) transformation, at the water-sediment interface of a eutrophic constructed lake, were investigated via a series of simulative experiments. The above three factors had various influences on dissolved P concentration, water pH, water and surface sediment appearance, and P fractions. Additions of Al had the greatest effect on suppressing P release, and the water pH remained alkaline in the water-sediment system under various OC and DO conditions. No dissolution of the added Al was detected. 31P-NMR characterization suggested that OC addition did not promote biological P uptake to polyphosphates under oxic conditions. The simulation result on the added phytate indicated the absence of phytate in the original lake sediment. As compared to the reported natural lakes and wetland, the water-sediment system of the constructed lake responded differently to some simulative conditions. Since Al, OC, and DO can be controlled with engineering methods, the results of this study provide insights for the practical site restorations.
Effects of Modified Sediments from a Eutrophic Lake in Removing Phosphorus and Inhibiting Phosphatase Activity

Abstract:Phosphorus is one of the main limiting and strong influencing factors of eutrophication, and phosphorus controlling in lake is of great significance for eutrophication. To do this, sediment materials were taken from Dianchi Lake, a typically eutrophic lake, and modified by hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and ZnSO4 to remove phosphorus and inhibit alkaline phosphatase activity (APA). Results indicated that phosphorus removal efficiencies of sediments modified by CTAB (S-CTAB), ZnSO4 (S-Zn), and oxidized sediments (OS) were higher than that of the raw sediment (RS). Ability to absorb phosphorus varied, following the order S-Zn>S-CTAB>OS>RS. Sorption was influenced by ionic strength, with the former decreasing with the increase of the latter. Freundlich model well described the sorption isotherm, with an R2 ranging from 0.9168 to 0.9958. Furthermore, compared with the raw sediments, the maximum phosphorus sorption capacities of S-Zn and S-CTAB increased by 12.2% and 124.5%, respectively. Results of desorption studies suggest that the desorption rate of S-Zn was from 3.88 to 13.76%, lower than that of other sediment materials. APA was inhibited by S-CTAB and S-Zn at the same time, with inhibition rates from 29.6% and 61.0% when the concentrations of S-CTAB and S-Zn were 10 nmol L−1 and 0.2 nmol L−1, respectively. This study provides new insights into phosphorus removal and phosphatase activity inhibition in water treatment.

Abstract:Internal phosphorus loading (IPL), as an important part of lake phosphorus cycle and the key to solve the eutrophication problem, is still an important cause of regional and seasonal algal blooms for some mesotrophic lakes located in plateau areas. We investigated the composition, distribution of P fractions in sediments and suspended particulate matter (SPM) of Erhai Lake, southwest China, and explored the relationships between environmental variables and spatial-temporal variations of P fractions. The total P (TP) in surface sediments ranged from 817 to 1216 mg/kg, with inert Ca-P (32%) and Res-P (24%) predominating, at a moderate level. The comparison of short-term release fluxes (0.08 mg/(m 2 ·d)) and long-term release fluxes (0.09 mg/(m 2 ·d)) reflected that the northern region was recovering slowly from the previous P pollution. Mobile-P (the sum of loosely adsorbed P, iron bound P, and organic P) accounted for 52.3% of the TP in SPM and showed high spatial-temporal variations, which were closely related to the growth of algae throughout the investigation. The results suggested that sediments could make a sustained contribution to IPL, and that the P in SPM was highly active and significantly contributed to eutrophication in Erhai Lake especially at the time of seasonal alternations. Our data provided important theoretical bases for the relationship between internal phosphorus loading and eutrophication in plateau lakes.

Abstract:Plant microbial involvement in phosphorus (P) release and transformation during resuspension events in bottom aquatic systems remains poorly understood. Laboratory experiments were used in this study to explore the release and transformation of P from sediments and the microbiota involved. Dissolved and labile P were obtained by high-resolution dialysis and the diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) technique, respectively. The bacterial community was investigated using a scanning electron microscope and 16S rRNA high throughput sequencing technique. Finally, the diffusion fluxes dynamics of phosphorus were calculated using the DGT-induced fluxes in sediments and soils (DIFS) model. These results showed that sustained disturbance can balance dissolved P concentrations in the resuspension layer (overlying water) and enhance the stability of P transformation and release processes. Notably, the bacterial community within the deeper sediment layer (Below 10 mm sediment depth) significantly influences P interception. Acidobacteria and Neobacteria were identified as the key bacterial genera responsible for phosphorus adsorption of plant roots at speeds of 150 rad/min (R150). In addition, as the sediment depths increased, a slower decrease in R curves fitted with the DIFS model, which indicated a continuous resupply process from solid phase to pore water, especially below R150. This study provides theoretical references for managing shallow lakes with frequent sediment resuspension.

Abstract:Nutrient partition, especially for phosphorus (P), has been prominently changed that was caused by variation of river-lake relationship during the post-Three Gorges Reservoir and catchment alternations. Changes in proportion of total particulate phosphorus (TPP) and total dissolved phosphorus (TDP) might accelerate lake eutrophication, but limited attention has been paid to P partition over suspended particle (SP) levels. Data analysis showed that SP concentration presented a positive effect on TPP in wet season and soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) in dry season, indicating seasonal physical and chemical variations. Based on this phenomenon, we proposed a hypothesis that the SP levels would affect TDP and TPP proportions by partition in aqueous-solid. It was found that using the parabola models to fit the sorption relationships of SRP and TDP (R2 > 0.6, p < 0.01), the maximum sorption capacity (Qmax) was 64.54 mg/kg and 60.52 mg/kg at 400 mg/L of SP level, respectively. In addition, the partition coefficients (KP) of TDP and SRP were logarithmically increased with SP levels, indicating that higher SP levels (>400 mg/L) would hinder the sorption process. Furthermore, enhancing turbulence lead to less sorption of SRP and TDP at high SP levels (>800 mg/L). The sorption of SRP and TDP related to the presence of Fe/Al oxy-hydroxides were enriched in the Fe/Al-P fraction (47% of TP). The findings of this study indicated that the low SP levels would increase P bioavailability for alga and is not conducive for lake eutrophication management.
