Abstract:Since its successful inauguration in Beijing, August, 2012, the IEEE international Conference on Communications (ICCC) has been globally recognized as one of the important annual international conferences held by the IEEE Communication Society (ComSoc) and China Institute of Communications (CIC). IEEE/CIC ICCC'14, the third ICCC held in Shanghai, China, 13–15 October, 2014, continued to expand its influence and had attracted distinguished scholars, key researchers, young investigators and ambitious students from dozens of countries and regions. The technical program of ICCC 2014 features 4 world-class plenary keynote speeches, 8 technical symposia, 5 tutorials, 4 industrial and academic panels and 1 workshop, covering from decades-long hot topics such as MIMO, interference coordination, heterogeneous networks and etc., to recent eye-catchers such as big data and social networks. The conference not only provided a forum and seminar for active researchers from every directions of this academia, but also attracted delegates from the main players in the industry.

Abstract:The papers in this special section focus on the topic of green industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). These papers aim to consolidate the current state of the art in terms of fundamental research ideas and network engineering, geared toward exploiting greenness of IIoT. The IIoT is a new ecosystem that combines intelligent and autonomous machines, advanced predictive analytics, and machine–human collaboration to improve productivity, efficiency, and reliability. IIoT connects billions of mobile digital devices, manufacturing machines, industrial equipment, etc., and generates an unprecedented volume of industrial data. The gap between the rapidly growing demands of data rate and existing bandwidth-limited network infrastructures has become ever prominent. Moreover, the interaction and connection of things in IIoT will consume substantial energy in contrast with limited energy storage of the things. Therefore, the greenness of IIoT is crucial for the success of IIoT. In particular, with the prevalence of mobile devices, electronic devices, cameras, social networks, social media, etc., ourworld is generating big data and multimedia big data, which further aggregate the energy demand in terms of the data transmission and processing of IIoT.

Abstract:Future smart healthcare systems—often referred to as Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) – will combine a plethora of wireless devices and applications that use wireless communication technologies to enable the exchange of healthcare data. Smart healthcare requires sufficient bandwidth, reliable and secure communication links, energy-efficient operations, and Quality of Service (QoS) support. The integration of Internet of Things (IoT) solutions into healthcare systems can significantly increase intelligence, flexibility, and interoperability. This work provides an extensive survey on emerging IoT communication standards and technologies suitable for smart healthcare applications. A particular emphasis has been given to low-power wireless technologies as a key enabler for energy-efficient IoT-based healthcare systems. Major challenges in privacy and security are also discussed. A particular attention is devoted to crowdsourcing/crowdsensing, envisaged as tools for the rapid collection of massive quantities of medical data. Finally, open research challenges and future perspectives of IoMT are presented.

Abstract:Internet of Things (IoT) is a key technology for enabling ubiquitous applications that interconnect with cyber-physical systems in various environments. However, its large scale adoption is strongly impeded by the limited energy available for most IoT devices that are battery-powered, and further challenged by the growing demands to pack increasing functionalities into IoT devices while shrinking their sizes. To address these problems, researchers have developed techniques for energy harvesting, wireless power transfer, and minimizing power consumption in the sensing, communication and computation components of IoT nodes, as found in many surveys. In contrast, this paper surveys Backscatter Communication (BackCom), a recently emerged technique that enables green IoT through joint wireless communication and sensing and potentially allows IoT devices to operate without batteries. The operating principle of BackCom-based green IoT, its architecture and evolution are presented. Also state-of-the-art applications such as healthcare, agriculture, human activity recognition, transportation and mobile IoT are reviewed together with the operational and security challenges faced by these applications and potential solution techniques to address these challenges while ensuring a high energy efficiency. Lastly, some future applications of BackCom-based green IoT are discussed.

Abstract:The Internet of Things (IoT) technology is not just about the connection among billions of devices but also about enabling a wide range of new capabilities, architectures, or service paradigms. The scale of the IoT is set to have a major economic, social, and environmental impact. However, the implementation of IoT faces various challenges, including sensing ability, energy consumption, power supply, data security, privacy, and data accountability. In order to mitigate these challenges, more and more IoT systems are embracing the new IoT paradigm, such as millimeter-wave (mmWave), sensor-less sensing, backscattering Wi-Fi/RFID, wireless/vision hybrid, blockchain, fat client, and so on. These modes shed light on the emerging technologies that could revolutionize the conventional IoT systems.
