Abstract:This paper describes the self-assembly of a new class of foldamer-based molecular tweezers, whose rigid folded conformations are stabilized by intramolecular hydrogen bonding. Two zinc porphyrin units are introduced to the ends of molecular tweezers Zn(2)1 and Zn(2)2, while three zinc porphyrin units are incorporated to the S-shaped bi-tweezers Zn(3)3, which may be regarded as a combination of two Zn(2)1 molecules. Due to the preorganized U-shaped feature, Zn(2)1 and Zn(2)2 are able to strongly complex C-60, C-70, and C-60 derivative 25 in chloroform or toluene in a 1:1 binding stoichiometry, whereas Zn(3)3, which possesses two tweezer units, complexes the guests in a 1:2 stoichiometry. More stable complex Zn(3)3 center dot 24 is formed between Zn(3)3 and 24, a linear molecule bearing two C60 moieties at the ends, as a result of the cooperative interaction of two binding sites. Chiral induction is observed for all the three receptors upon complexation with C-60-incoporated chiral phenylalanine derivative 29, although the complexation of 29 by the folding receptors is pronouncedly weaker than that of C-60 and 25 due to increased steric hindrance. The driving force for the formation of the complexes is the well established pi-pi stacking between the zinc porphyrin and fullerene units. The H-1 and C-13 NMR, UV-vis, fluorescent, and circular dichroism spectroscopy have been used to investigate the complexing behavior of the folding receptors and the fullerene guests. The association constants of the corresponding complexes in toluene and chloroform (if possible) have been evaluated with the UV-vis and fluorescent titration experiments.

Abstract:By introducing two and three zinc porphyrin units to one side of hydrogen bonding-induced aromatic amide foldamers, two new molecular tweezers 1 and 2 have been prepared. To explore new possible binding patterns, a leucine-based pyridine ligand 3 that bears a pentafluorophenyl group has been prepared. UV-Vis and 1H NMR experiments reveal that 1 and 2 favorably complex one or two molecules of 3. UV-Vis titration experiments show that the apparent association constants of the complexes of the zinc porphyrin units of the two receptors and 3 are considerably higher than that of the complex between a simple control zinc porphyrin and 3. In the presence of excess of 3, the left zinc porphyrin unit of 1 and 2 can bind one more molecule of 3, which is, however, stabilized only by the single Zn-N coordination.

Abstract:Four porphyrin-bridge-C60 dyads have been synthesized by covalently linking the chromophores at the opposite ends of a hydrogen bonded arylamide-derived foldamer bridge. For comparison, four C60-free porphyrin derivatives of the same frameworks have also been prepared. The fully hydrogen bonded bridges enable the appended porphyrin and C60 moieties to contact in a face-to-face manner. 1H NMR, UV–vis and fluorescent investigations in chloroform indicate that such a structural matching remarkably facilitates the intramolecular energy and electron transfer and charge separation between the two chromophores and also retards the recombination of the charge-separated state. Removing one hydrogen bond considerably reduces the energy and electron transfer. Further removing another one leads to no important interaction between the chromophores to occur.

Abstract:Herein, a novel molecular tweezer based on 2,2′-bipyridine-bridged porphyrin subunits was constructed for efficient fullerenes recognition. The syn conformation of the molecule, which was obtained by Zn(Ⅱ) coordination, gives rise to a proper cavity to interact with fullerene guests to form a stable 1:1 complex in toluene solution. It exhibits distinct binding selectivity towards C60 over C70. Moreover, the fullerene recognition capacity can be adequately suppressed by importing H2PO4- to competitively capture Zn(Ⅱ) along with syn-anti conformational conversion. Subsequently, the molecular tweezer regenerated to bind the fullerene by introducing the Ca2+ into the system. Significantly, the association-disassociation process can be switched reversibly and repeatedly.

Abstract:1,2-(1-Acridin-10'-yl-2-aza-2-methylprop-1,3-ylene)fullerene was synthesized firstly and characterized by UV-Vis, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR and electrospray ionization mass spectroscopy, which is capable of forming a stable complex with zinc tetraphenylporphyrin via the axial ligation. The steady state fluorescence studies show efficient quenching of the zinc tetraphenylporphyrin emission upon axial coordination of acridine attached to C-60.

Abstract:Two linear compounds 1 and 2 have been designed and synthesized as new receptors for zinc porphyrins. Both compounds consist of two folded aromatic amide moieties, which are connected with an acetylene linker in 1 or directly in 2. The rigid conformations of their folded moieties are stabilized by intramolecular tri-centered hydrogen bonding, while the whole molecule adopts a ‘S’- or ‘C’-styled conformation depending on the relative orientation of the two rigid moieties. Two pyridine units are introduced at the ends of 1 and 2 for the complexation of zinc porphyrin guests. Although the 1H NMR investigation indicated that both compounds can bind two zinc porphyrin guests at high concentrations (≥5mM) in chloroform, the UV–vis studies revealed that, at low concentration of 1 and 2 (4μM), both compounds complex one zinc porphyrin guest to form structurally unique ‘two-point’-bound 1:1 complexes. The association constants of the 1:1 complexes have been determined with the UV–vis titration experiments.

Abstract:Quadruply-hydrogen-bonded porphyrin homodimer Zn1.Zn1 has been designed, assembled, and evaluated as a supramolecular cleft-featured receptor for its ability to bind dipyridyl guests in chloroform-d. Monomer Zn1 consists of a 2-ureidopyrimidin-4(1H)-one unit, which was initially reported by Meijer et al., and a zinc porphyrin unit. The zinc porphyrin is strapped with an additional aliphatic chain for controlling the atropisomerization of porphyrin. The 2-ureidopyrimidin-4(1H)-one unit dimerizes exclusively in chloroform even at the dilute concentration of 10(-)(4) M, while the two "strapped" zinc porphyrin units of the homodimer provide additional binding sites for selective guest recognition. (1)H NMR studies indicate that the new homodimer Zn1.Zn1 adopts an S-type conformation due to strong donor-acceptor interaction between the electron-rich porphyrin units and the electron-deficient 2-ureidopyrimidin-4(1H)-one unit. (1)H NMR, UV-vis, and vapor pressure osmometry investigations reveal that Zn1.Zn1 could function as a new generation of assembled supramolecular cleft, to be able to not only efficiently bind linear dipyridyl molecules 14-17, resulting in the formation of stable termolecular complexes, with K(aasoc) values ranging from 3.8 x 10(6) to 8.9 x 10(7) M(-)(1), but also strongly complex a hydrogen-bond-assembled [2]rotaxane, 18, which consists of a rigid fumaramide thread and a pyridine-incorporated tetraamide cyclophane, with K(aasoc) = 1.2 x 10(4) M(-)(1). (1)H NMR competition experiments reveal that complexation to the dipyriyl guests also promotes the stability of the quadruply-hydrogen-bonded dimeric receptor.

Abstract:UV–Vis spectra and ESI–MS studies indicated that an axial coordination supramolecule of cis-2′,5′-dipyridinylpyrrolidino[3′,4′:1,2][60]fullerene (Compound 1) with zinc tetraphenylporphyrin (ZnTPP) was formed. The association constant was determined by Stern–Volmer method (0.94×104) and Benesi–Hildebrand equation (1.2×104). The fluorescence emission of ZnTPP in cyclohexane is quenched by compound 1, which indicates that there has an energy transfer from ZnTPP to C60 moiety in the title coordination supramolecule.
