Abstract:We have measured optical reflectivity of Li- and Ti-doped NiO (LTNO) in the infrared range at various temperatures. A Drude-type absorption is found at low energy, omega<100 cm(-1) and its spectral weight increases substantially as temperature decreases. This observation and dc-resistivity result show that LTNO has a conductive grain and resistive boundary. Such composite structure provides evidence of the Maxwell-Wagner (MW) mechanism as the origin of the high dielectric constant epsilon(o). We propose a three-phase granular structure and show that this extended MW model explains the observed frequency- and temperature dependence of the dielectric constant as well as the giant value of epsilon(o).

Abstract:A dielectric relaxation with a “giant” dielectric constant (ε∼104) at low frequencies and a remaining high ε(∼5×103) background at high frequencies (>1MHz) are observed in Bi doped SrTiO3 ceramics annealed in a reduced atmosphere. The material possesses a very high capacitance-temperature sensitivity at ∼2K, which is much higher than the values reported in the current literature. The giant dielectric constant at low frequencies is attributed to the “Maxwell-Wagner” interfacial polarization based on the study of the complex-impedance spectrum. The remaining high dielectric constant at high frequencies is tentatively attributed to the “electron-relaxation mode” coupling polarization.

Abstract:A giant low-frequency dielectric constant ( epsilon 0 approximately 10(5)) near room temperature was observed in Li,Ti co-doped NiO ceramics. Unlike currently best-known high epsilon 0 ferroelectric-related materials, the doped oxide is a nonperovskite, lead-free, and nonferroelectric material. It is suggested that the giant dielectric constant response of the doped NiO could be enhanced by a grain boundary-layer mechanism as found in boundary-layer capacitors. In addition, there is about a one-hundred-fold drop in the dielectric constant at low temperature. This anomaly is attributed to a thermally excited relaxation process rather than a thermally driven phase transition, as for that yielding ferroelectrics.

Abstract:Lithium and titanium co-doped NiO ceramics have been found to exhibit a giant low-frequency dielectric constant (ε～105), however, the same system thin films is not yet study. In the present study, Lithium and titanium co-doped NiO thin films were prepared by a chemical solution deposition method using 2-methoxyethanol as a solvent, nickel actate tetrahydrate, lithium acetate dihydrate and titanium isopropoxide as starting materials. The complex oxides such as NiO, Ni0.2O0.8 and NiTiO3 were formed for the Ni0.98Ti0.02O and Ni0.686Li0.294Ti0.02O thin films, and the addition of the lithium lead to the formation of Li2NiO2.888. The dielectric constant of Lithium and titanium co-doped Ni0.686Li0.294Ti0.02O thin films is about 426 at 100 Hz and much higher than that of the titanium-doped Ni0.98Ti0.02O.
Pseudo-dielectric Functions, Band-to-band Transitions, and Dielectric-Related Factors in a Single-Crystal LiTi2O4 Thin Film

Abstract:This article is devoted to studying the optical properties of a novel single-crystal LiTi2O4 thin film. A high-quality (011)-oriented LiTi2O4 single-crystal thin film was prepared on a MgAl2O4 (011) substrate by pulsed laser deposition. Abstract:The existence of polar nanoregions is the most important characteristic of ferroelectric relaxors, however, the size determination and dynamic of PNRs remains uncertain. We reveal a re-entrant relaxor behavior and ferroelectric-paraelectric transition coexists in complex perovskite oxide 0.6Bi(Mg$_{1/2}$Ti$_{1/2}$)O$_3$-0.4PbTiO$_3$. Two dielectric anomalies (i) the low-temperature re-entrant relaxor transition and (ii) the high-temperature diffuse phase transition (DPT) were described by the phenomenological statistical model. The sizes of the two kinds of polar nanoregions (PNRs) corresponding to two ferroelectric states were obtained. The dynamic of PNRs were analyzed using isothermal electrical modulus, which shows three critical temperatures associated with the diffuse phase transition, the formation and freezing of PNRs, respectively. The temperature evolution of the PNRs evolution depends on the stoichiometry of bismuth. The results provide new insights into the dynamic behavior of PNRs and the modification way of re-entrant relaxor behavior.

Abstract:Li and Ti co-doped NiO thin films of 250 nm in thickness were deposited onto Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si(100) substrates using a sol-gel spin-coating method. The effect of Li doping content on microstructure and dielectric properties of the LixTyNi1-x-yO thin films in which the Ti content was fixed at 2 and 20 at% was investigated. All the thin films consisted of a mixture of NiO, NiTiO3, Li2NiO2 and/or LiNiO7 phases and show the high dielectric constant ranged from 235-370 in 100 Hz depending on the proportion of various phases. Excess Li content which results in increasing Li2NiO2 and the formation of LiNiO2 led to decrease the dielectric constant especially for the 2% Ti containing thin films in 100 Hz. The increased NiTiO3 and Li-dissolved Ni(Li)O phases by increasing Ti content from 2 to 20 at% is more beneficial for the formation of the core-shell like microstructure and hence enhancing the dielectric constant. However, the frequency stability of the dielectric constants was lowered by the formation of the excess NiTiO3 phase as Ti content was increased from 2 to 20 at%. The doping content of Li and Ti is necessary to control in an appropriate range in order to obtain the high dielectric property.
Large tuning of the optical properties of nanoscale NdNiO3 via electron doping

Abstract:We synthesized crystalline films of neodymium nickel oxide (NdNiO3), a perovskite quantum material, switched the films from a metal phase (intrinsic) into an insulator phase (electron-doped) by field-driven lithium-ion intercalation, and characterized their structural and optical properties. Time-of-flight secondary-ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) showed that the intercalation process resulted in a gradient of the dopant concentration along the thickness direction of the films, turning the films into insulator-metal bilayers. We used variable-angle spectroscopic ellipsometry to measure the complex refractive indices of the metallic and insulating phases of NdNiO3. The insulator phase has a refractive index of n ~ 2 and low absorption in the visible and near infrared, and analysis of the complex refractive indices indicated that the band gap of the insulating phase is roughly 3-4 eV. Electrical control of the optical band gap, with corresponding large changes to the optical refractive indices, creates new opportunities for tunable optics.

Abstract:(Li and Ti)-doped NiO samples were prepared by the citrate precursor method followed by a sintered process, and impedance spectroscopy (IS) of these samples was measured as a function of frequency and temperature. Accordingly, the impedance spectra exhibit two depressed semicircles when the Ti content is more than 5 mol.%, which is corresponding to the core–shell microstructure. The simple resistor–capacitor (RC) effective circuit and the modified effective circuit (the capacitor in the RC circuit is replaced by a constant-phase element (CPE)) were used to fit the experimental data. And it is indicated that the CPE element is an effective tool to analyze IS.

Abstract:Dielectric relaxations of charge-ordered Ln(1.5)Sr(0.5)NiO(4) (Ln=La and Nd) ceramics were investigated over a broad temperature range. The giant dielectric constant (over 70 000) with a low dielectric loss of similar to 0.1 was determined at high frequencies (up to 5 MHz) over a broad temperature range. There are two dielectric relaxations in the vicinity of charge ordering temperatures. The thermal activated small polaronic hopping between two charge ordering temperatures should contribute to the giant dielectric response in the present ceramics. Compared to other giant dielectric constant materials, the present materials have the notable advantage for high frequency applications. (C) 2008 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:The dielectric behavior of two kinds of Li and Ti co-doped NiO (LTNO)/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) composite was studied at various different frequencies and temperatures. The effective dielectric constant of the percolative composite at 100 Hz is very high, i.e., εeff≈600, which is 60 times higher than that of the PVDF. The results also show that there is a remarkable difference in the dielectric constant of the composites with different LTNO fillers. Boundary layer capacitor effect and percolation theory can be used to explain the experimental results.

Abstract:The discovery of superconductivity in infinite -layer planar square phase nickel oxide thin films and bilayer RuddlesdenPopper (RP) -phase nickel oxide single crystals under high pressure has garnered extensive interest in the superconductivity field. Superconductivity has not yet been observed in RP -phase nickel oxides at ambient pressure, but a metal -to -metal transition in the bilayer and trilayer RP -phase nickel oxides is observed. In this work, the optical properties of the trilayer RP -phase nickel oxide Nd4Ni3O10 are studied. Low -frequency optical conductivity shows a Drude response, which is consistent with the metallic nature of the material. Two Drude components are needed to describe the low -frequency optical response, demonstrating the presence of multiple electronic bands crossing the Fermi level. Below the metal -to -metal transition temperature T*, low -frequency optical conductivity is suppressed, suggesting the opening of an energy gap on the Fermi surface; the lost spectral weight is transferred to a very high energy range, hinting that the strong electronic correlation effect plays a significant role in the metal -to -metal transition in Nd4Ni3O10. This work offers key information to understand the mechanism of the metal -to -metal transition in RP -phase nickel oxides.
Microstructural Evolution and High-Performance Giant Dielectric Properties of Lu3+/Nb5+ Co-Doped TiO2 Ceramics

Abstract:Giant dielectric (GD) oxides exhibiting extremely large dielectric permittivities (ε' > 104) have been extensively studied because of their potential for use in passive electronic devices. However, the unacceptable loss tangents (tanδ) and temperature instability with respect to ε' continue to be a significant hindrance to their development. In this study, a novel GD oxide, exhibiting an extremely large ε' value of approximately 7.55 × 104 and an extremely low tanδ value of approximately 0.007 at 103 Hz, has been reported. These remarkable properties were attributed to the synthesis of a Lu3+/Nb5+ co-doped TiO2 (LuNTO) ceramic containing an appropriate co-dopant concentration. Furthermore, the variation in the ε' values between the temperatures of -60 °C and 210 °C did not exceed ±15% of the reference value obtained at 25 °C. The effects of the grains, grain boundaries, and second phase particles on the dielectric properties were evaluated to determine the dielectric properties exhibited by LuNTO ceramics. A highly dense microstructure was obtained in the as-sintered ceramics. The existence of a LuNbTiO6 microwave-dielectric phase was confirmed when the co-dopant concentration was increased to 1%, thereby affecting the dielectric behavior of the LuNTO ceramics. The excellent dielectric properties exhibited by the LuNTO ceramics were attributed to their inhomogeneous microstructure. The microstructure was composed of semiconducting grains, consisting of Ti3+ ions formed by Nb5+ dopant ions, alongside ultra-high-resistance grain boundaries. The effects of the semiconducting grains, insulating grain boundaries (GBs), and secondary microwave phase particles on the dielectric relaxations are explained based on their interfacial polarizations. The results suggest that a significant enhancement of the GB properties is the key toward improvement of the GD properties, while the presence of second phase particles may not always be effective.
Colossal dielectric behavior of Nb-doped SrTiO 3 single crystal

Abstract:Crystals are usually used to explore the origin of material properties due to the fact that they have no grain boundaries and no pores. Although doped SrTiO 3 crystal have remarkable dielectric properties, the origin of this improvement is still not fully understood. Herein, Nb 5+ has been selected as a donor ion to study the dielectric properties of SrTiO 3 due to its radius close to Ti 4+ . It has been found that the dielectric permittivity of the Nb-doped crystal is greater than 94,500 and the dielectric loss is maintained below 0.002 in the frequency range from 20 Hz to 0.2 MHz. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy indicate that the dielectric properties of doped crystals were improved due to the existence of oxygen vacancies and there was no effect of interface polarization. It was beneficial for the Nb-doped crystal to be annealed in a N 2 atmosphere resulting in oxygen loss more oxygen vacancies, and a higher concentration of Ti 3+ . The electron can be bound by V O •• and Ti 4+ and form the defect dipole [Ti 4+ ∙e − V O •• − Ti 4+ ∙e], which showed a higher permittivity and lower dielectric loss. In summary, the origin and optimization of dielectric properties of SrTiO 3 -based materials can be deeply understood when from doped SrTiO 3 crystals.

Abstract:In the quest for high-k dielectrics with decent magnetodielectric (MD) response, ball-milled processed (Li, Ti) doped NiO ceramics have been evaluated by various experimental techniques. Magnetic properties in these ceramics manifest with a pronounced anomaly appearing at ∼260 K, suggesting ferrimagnetic phase (related to cluster magnetism) and co-existence with a glassy-like antiferromagnetic phase at ∼7 K. Room temperature neutron diffraction pattern shows the existence of short-range magnetic correlations. In the magnetically ordered state below 250 K, the magnetic structure is found to be phase coexistence of G-type antiferromagnet and ferrimagnet. Impedance spectroscopy measurements over a wide temperature range can be perfectly described with appropriate microstructural model (internal barrier layer capacitor), based on domain and domain boundary relaxations, justifying the enhancement of the dielectric response. The low-temperature (T < 100 K) dielectric relaxation is polaronic in nature, associated with the charge ordering of a mixed valence states of Ti ions (co-existence of Ti3+ and Ti4+). Finally, our investigations in external magnetic fields up to 15 T reveal the occurrence of negative MD effect near room temperature. This intriguing intrinsic feature has been understood by the mechanism of charge-hopping-mediated MD effects.

Abstract:The effects of annealing environments and dopants on the structural, chemical, optical, and electrical properties of NiO are investigated. Pristine NiO exhibits electrically insulating behavior regardless of the annealing environments (e.g., vacuum and O2 environments). On the other hand, Li-doped NiO exhibits electrical resistivities of ∼350 Ω cm and ∼9 Ω cm for the ceramics annealed under vacuum and O2, respectively with reduced optical band-gap. The structural analysis revealed that all the samples exhibit a cubic structure (Fm-3m, SG 225) without any measurable secondary phases. However, Li-doped NiO samples showed a reduction in the unit cell volume as compared to the undoped NiO samples. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed different residual Li content depending on the annealing environments, and the presence of induced Ni3+ state in the Li-doped NiO. These induced Ni3+ states and doped Li are responsible for the observed change in the structural and electrical properties of the Li-doped NiO samples.

Dynamic correlation driven paramagnetic insulating state and optical properties of the cathode material rhombohedral LiNiO2 at room temperature

Abstract:Inspired by the experimental finding of a paramagnetic insulating state in rhom- bohedral LiNiO2, a lithium-ion battery cathode of great interest, we calculate the electronic, magnetic, and optical properties of LiNiO2 employing a range of single- particle and many-body methods. Within density-functional theory (DFT) using the generalised-gradient approximation (GGA), meta-GGA, and hybrid functionals we obtain a ferromagnetic half-metallic ground state for rhombohedral LiNiO2, as has been seen previously. Self-consistent GW calculations including self-interaction corrections beyond DFT of various flavours show an electronic band gap albeit with a small quasi-particle peak at the Fermi energy. Moving beyond this, room temperature state-of- the-art dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) calculations on rhombohedral LiNiO2 show for the first time a gap of combined Mott and charge-transfer character. The paramagnetic insulating state has a band gap of ∼0.6 eV, in excellent agreement with experiments and is in sharp contrast to DFT calculations that require the presence of an extra structural symmetry breaking in the form of Jahn-Teller distortions to open a gap. We observe Ni to be in a +2 state in a d8L configuration, with a charge-transfer ligand hole on O p, and identify the ligand hole state from the DMFT DOS. We further show that whereas DFT shows the presence of an unphysical metallic Drude peak in optical absorption spectra, DMFT calculations capture the correct form of the optical absorption spectra, and have an excellent match with the calculated band gap as well. Our results clarify that at room temperature, it is the charge transfer gap with a Mott character that causes rhombohedral LiNiO2’s insulating nature; a structural distortion is not required.

Abstract:Nickel oxide (NiO) is a transparent conductive oxide material that has interesting physical properties, making it one of the most promising materials for a variety of modern technological applications. The interest of this work is to study the structural and optical properties of pure and Li doped NiO thin films deposited using spray pyrolysis on glass substrates. The samples were prepared at 480 °C with various concentrations of Li doping (1, 2, 3, and 5%). X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) was employed to study the structural characteristics including the crystallite size, dislocation density, and lattice strain. Meanwhile, UV visible spectroscopy was used to study the optical properties. The results revealed a polycrystalline cubic structure with (200) crystal plan being the preferred orientation for the produced films. On the other hand, (Li: NiO) films have shown a high transmittance ranging between 60 and 80%. Also, the bandgap values (Eg), were found to be significantly affected by the Li doping ratios to take values from 3.38 to 3.66 eV. Furthermore, diverse linear and nonlinear optical properties were examined. It was found that the nonlinear properties values of χ1, χ3, and n2 to were improved when lithium doping is incorporated into the NiO lattice.

A Low-Temperature Specific Heat Study of the Giant Dielectric Constant Materials

Abstract:Low-temperature specific-heat study has been performed on the insulating giant dielectric constant material CaCu3Ti4O12 and two related compounds, Bi2/3Cu3Ti4O12 and La0.5Na0.5Cu3Ti4O12, from 0.6 to 10 K. From analyzing the specific heat data at very low-temperature range, 0.6 to 1.5 K, and moderately low-temperature range, 1.5 to 5 K, in addition to the expected Debye terms, we noticed significant contributions originated from the linear and Einstein terms, which we attributed as the manifestation of low-lying elementary excitations due to lattice vibrations occurred at the grain boundaries and induced by local defects. Together with the findings on electronic and mechanical properties, a phenomenological model is proposed to explain the high dielectric constant behaviors at both low and high frequency regions.
