Abstract:Parametric sources in quantum optics usually require some form of spectro-temporal control for conditional generation of high-purity single-photon states, but their properties have not yet been optimized using integrated microchips. Using external short-pulse lasers and separate devices for pump preparation and for photon generation, as is traditional, incurs many impediments such as reduced performance, increased loss, high cost, and limited scalability. To overcome these limitations, here we demonstrate a circuit including high-bandwidth, high-extinction ratio electro-optic modulators for pump-pulse preparation fully integrated with high-quality factor ( Q ) microresonators for efficient parametric nonlinearity, together with seamlessly interconnecting waveguides. The microchip uses different optical materials on a common platform and a multi-layer integrated photonic architecture. Using this, we control the joint spectrum of room-temperature biphoton generation for the first time on a single integrated microchip, and demonstrate that the theoretical purity bound can be achieved.
High quantum efficiency parametric amplification via hybridized nonlinear optics

Abstract:Parametric amplifiers have allowed breakthroughs in ultrafast, strong-field, and high-energy density laser science and are an essential tool for extending the frequency range of powerful emerging diode-pumped solid-state laser technology. However, their impact is limited by inherently low quantum efficiency due to nonuniform light extraction. Here we demonstrate a new type of parametric amplifier based on hybridized nonlinear optics. Hybridization of parametric amplification with idler second harmonic generation induces unusual evolution dynamics for a fully parametric amplifier - with saturating rather than cyclic gain - observed here for the first time. This allows highly uniform light extraction enabling unprecedented efficiency for a lossless amplifier with Gaussian-like intensity profiles - a 48-dB single-stage gain with 68% quantum efficiency and 44% pump-to-signal energy conversion - a several-fold improvement over the standard. Possessing both laser-like high quantum efficiency and the advantages of thermal-loading free parametric systems, this simple approach can be implemented widely and have significant impact by increasing several-fold the power available for science and industry.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel hybrid seeded optical parametric amplifier (OPA) that incorporates an external CW seeding at signal wavelength in the first stage and difference-frequency mixing between the idler and pump in the second stage. By using a germanium plate to block the CW seeding background, spectrally and temporally clean signal pulses with duration less than 150 fs and energy up to 17 muJ are obtained with a MgO:LiNbO3-based hybrid seeded OPA. The device may provide direct tunability to some extent and delivers signal pulses tunable from 1.01 mum to 1.08 mum.

Abstract:This paper proposes that in order to realize high-quality and stable output from an optical parametric chirped pulse amplification(OPCPA)system,the two nonlinear courses included in an OPCPA system must be optimized at the same time. These two nonlinear courses are the optical parametric amplifying (OPA)course and the second harmonic generation(SHG) course of the pump.In order to optimize the parametric amplifier,several kinds of physical models are set up and they will be used to solve different kinds of problems.The analyzing method is set up to get symmetrical output signal in x and y from an op-tical parametric amplifier.The method of making certain the length of the nonlinear crystal is also set up to get the most stable OPA output.In the study of the second harmonic generation course,mismatched SHG is put forward to get stable second har-monic pump.The study shows that mismatched SHG can not only improve the stability of the pump,but also decrease the modu-lation in near field and pulse waveform,thus improve the beam quality of the pump.

Abstract:A CW seeded femtosecond optical parametric amplifier, a compromise between OPG/OPA and strongly seeded OPA configurations, has been demonstrated. An independent CW Nd: YAG laser with sub-watt power decreases the pump threshold of the OPA and improves the stability of the output pulses considerably. Output signal energies as high as 30 μJ with pulse durations less than 250 fs near 1 μm are reported. from this two-stage device.

Abstract:The continuous advancements in ultrafast lasers, characterized by high pulse energy, great average power, and ultrashort pulse duration, have opened up new frontiers and applications in various fields such as high-energy-density science. In this study, we investigated the implementation of non-Hermitian nonlinear parametric amplification by introducing anti-parity-time (anti-PT) symmetry to three-wave interaction processes. By exploring the parameter space defined by the coupling coefficient, phase mismatch, and absorption, we categorized the behavior of the non-Hermitian optical parametric system into four distinct quadrants, representing unbroken/broken anti-PT symmetry and amplification/attenuation, and amplification-attenuation boundaries and exceptional lines can be observed in such parametric space. Through simulations of the dynamical behavior of the interacting waves, we demonstrated the rich evolutions of the signal and idler waves in systems belonging to the respective quadrants and near exceptional points, revealed by the unique performance of eigenmodes. Our findings provide insights into the evaluation of energy flow direction in optical parametric amplification engineering by the directly linked parameter space, which contribute to a deeper understanding of photonics and laser science, potentially leading to new applications in these fields.

Abstract:We present a comprehensive model for predicting the full performance of a second harmonic generationoptical parametric amplification system that aims at enhancing the temporal contrast of laser pulses. The model simultaneously takes into account all the main parameters at play in the system such as the group velocity mismatch, the beam divergence, the spectral content, the pump depletion, and the length of the nonlinear crystals. We monitor the influence of the initial parameters of the input pulse and the interdependence of the two related non-linear processes on the performance of the system and show its optimum configuration. The influence of the initial beam divergence on the spectral and the temporal characteristics of the generated pulse is discussed. In addition, we show that using a crystal slightly longer than the optimum length and introducing small delay between the seed and the pump ensures maximum efficiency and compensates for the spectral shift in the optical parametric amplification stage in case of chirped input pulse. As an example, calculations for bandwidth transform limited and chirped pulses of sub-picosecond duration in beta barium borate crystal are presented.

Abstract:The most important advances in hybrid microcavity lasers, the current deep insight into the inherent relationship between cavity geometry and the resulting laser behaviors (wavelength, polarization, phase, mode, and direction, as well as their multiple combination), along with the challenges and prospects of future development of hybrid microcavity lasers are summarized and proposed. Control coupling and synchronization of lasers has become increasingly attractive for their applications in spectroscopy, imaging, sensing, secret communication, and optical networks. As complex microcavities emerge, more complicated light–matter interactions, along with the resulting distinct lasing emission behavior, is induced in these hybrid microcavities. This review summarizes the most important advances and current deep insights into the inherent relationship between the hybrid microcavity geometries and lasing behaviors, which are classified as the modulated lasing output freedom, including wavelength, angular momentum, mode, direction, and their multiple combinations. Finally, based on scientific research and practical application, the challenges and prospects of future development of hybrid microcavities are proposed, hoping to provide valuable inspiration for further optimizing hybrid microcavities to achieve low thresholds, small divergence angles, and single‐mode microcavity lasers.

Abstract:We designed a multidefect nonlinear superstructure fiber (SF) to serve as the gain medium of optical parametric amplification. In both theoretical derivation and simulation results, the signal amplification proved to achieve enhancement at certain frequencies where the local field intensities were increased or the slow group velocities of the modes were greatly slowed down on the band edges to offset the negative effect raised by large wave vector mismatching.

Abstract:We theoretically study the pulse-contrast degradation of optical parametric chirped pulse amplification (OPCPA) system pumped by a temporally phase-modulated laser. We reveal two physical mechanisms that reduce the contrast in such a parametric process: the effect of phase transfer caused by group-velocity mismatch (GVM) and the effect of FM-to-AM conversion caused by group-velocity dispersion (GVD). Degradation of the contrast is quantified via numerical simulations. To reduce the effect of phase transfer, a pair of OPCPAs seeded by the signal and idler respectively, is studied for effectively improving the contrast in such a case with pump phase modulation. The results presented in this paper are of particular importance for extremely intense laser applications requiring high contrast. (C) 2010 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We numerically analyze single-frequency nanosecond optical parametric oscillators and amplifiers. It shows that a single-frequency optical parametric oscillator requires a single-frequency pump wave and a seed source for injection locking. The power of the injection seed should be increased dramatically to maintain single-frequency output as pump energy increasing. The results numerically verify that high energy and single-frequency output waves can hardly be reached simultaneously by optical parametric oscillators. Multistage optical parametric amplifiers are helpful to meet the shortcoming of optical parametric oscillators. During the amplification, the pump energy should match the signal energy in optical parametric amplifiers to obtain high conversion efficiency.

Abstract:We propose a novel optical parametric amplification scheme which combines quasi-phase-matching with a composite pulse approach that involves crystal segments of specific lengths. The presented scheme highly increases the robustness of the frequency conversion against variations of the nonlinear coupling and of the pump, idler or signal wavelengths and has therefore the potential to enhance high amplification and broadband operation. Simulations examples applied to LiNbO_3 are given.

Abstract:The laser source with high peak power and high beam quality has important application in laser processing and other fields. A fiber laser with repetition of 50 kHz, pulse width of 3.9 ps, and average power of 10.9 mW is used as the seed source. After double-passing two-stage amplifiers, the average output power of 27.65 W with a peak power of 65 MW is obtained. The first stage is an end pumped Nd: YVO4 amplifier, and the second stage is a side pumped Nd: YAG amplifier. The beam quality is well preserved with M2 factor of 1.3 based on the method of spherical-aberration compensation and the optimizing of the beam filling factor.

Abstract:Optical quadratic nonlinearity is ultrafast in nature, while parametric interaction usually manifests only the broadband characteristic. Enormous progress has been made toward broadband phase-matching for parametric amplification and wide applications. In existing devices of broadband parametric amplification, the power efficiency of conversion is restricted to approximately the energy efficiency, and the desire for the signal power enhancement necessitates additional pulse compression after amplification. Here, we demonstrate ultrafast parametric amplification having an extraordinary power efficiency of 1155%; this allows the generation of intense femtosecond pulses without the need for a pulse stretcher and compressor. Direct femtosecond signal amplification by picosecond pumping is enabled by an ultrafast parametric environment in which the pre-delayed signal of faster speed gradually overtakes and effectively depletes the pump of slower speed as they propagate in a nonlinear crystal. The demonstrated technique should lead to breakthroughs in ultrafast lasers as well as applications.

Abstract:Noncollinear phase, group-velocity matching and parametric bandwidth amplication based on PPLN are theoretically investigated. The best noncollinear angle and signal wavelength of PPLN OPA are obtained.Meanwhile, the effects of noncollinear angle to the parametric bandwidth is discussed. The results indicate that a suitable noncollinear angle of signal pulse can increase the parametric bandwidth dramatically.

Abstract:We have theoretically analyzed the characteristics of an optical parametric amplifier system seeded by an optical parametric generation. We investigated the influences of the energy, pulse duration, material dispersion, and the third-order nonlinear effect in beta-barium borate. The group-velocity mismatch (GVM) becomes the most important factor for the amplification of bandwidths. Even though tilting the wave front of the pump can decrease the GVM, it seems impossible to generate pulses smaller than 10-fs with 400-nm pumping. However, 10-fs pulses can be achieved with a 30-fs pump duration with pumping at 800 nm.

Abstract:High-gain optical parametric amplification is an important nonlinear process used both as a source of coherent infrared light and as a source of nonclassical light. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate an approach to optical parametric amplification that enables extremely large parametric gains with low energy requirements. In conventional nonlinear media driven by femtosecond pulses, multiple dispersion orders limit the effective interaction length available for parametric amplification. Here, we use the dispersion engineering available in periodically poled thin-film lithium niobate nanowaveguides to eliminate several dispersion orders at once. The result is a quasi-static process; the large peak intensity associated with a short pump pulse can provide gain to signal photons without undergoing pulse distortion or temporal walk-off. We characterize the parametric gain available in these waveguides using optical parametric generation, where vacuum fluctuations are amplified to macroscopic intensities. When driven with pulse energies in excess of 10 pJ, we observe saturated parametric gains as large as 88 dB (146 dB/cm). The devices shown here achieve saturated optical parametric generation with orders of magnitude less pulse energy than previous techniques.

Abstract:In typical scenarios, quadratic nonlinear processes such as second harmonic generation (SHG) and sum frequency generation (SFG) that accompany optical parametric amplification (OPA) are often considered unfavorable parasitic effects. These effects can lead to a reduction in energy conversion efficiency during OPA. In this study, we demonstrate an approach to enhance OPA efficiency by eliminating the signal pulse through SHG in a simple collinear geometry while maintaining a broadband output using a femtosecond pump laser. The complete setup features a three-stage OPA system, with the final stage employing a hybrid OPA-SHG process that effectively suppresses back conversion, achieving up to 60.8 % pump depletion and 26.2 % pump-to-idler energy conversion, resulting in an idler energy of 0.97 mJ. By harnessing the capabilities of a broadband femtosecond pump and Type-I phase matching to enhance phase-matched bandwidth, we generated a 1.85-μm idler pulse with a near-transform-limited (TL) duration of 33.5 fs through compression in a silicon window. Furthermore, we maintained excellent beam quality and output power stability, with only 0.23 % root mean square (RMS) fluctuations over the course of one hour. This mid-IR laser source, operating at the millijoule (mJ) level and characterized by its high beam quality, is exceptionally well-suited for advancing attosecond and strong-field research.

Abstract:The coherent noise inherent to optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (OPCPA) poses a fundamental limitation on the temporal quality of current ultrashort ultraintense lasers as well as their applications in strong-field physics research. Here we present a peer comparison of coherent noise between OPCPA and one of its alternatives - quasi-parametric chirped-pulse amplification (QPCPA). In the initial amplification stage termed as small-signal regime, the spectrum of chirped signal pulse in either OPCPA or QPCPA is exposed to the imperfections in pump pulse and optics, resulting in coherent noise pedestals in the time domain. While in the final amplification stage featured by amplifier saturation, the nonlinear growths of coherent noise become sharply different. We demonstrate that the non-parametric saturation behavior of QPCPA can greatly smooth the spectral distortions of signal, and thus bring down the coherent noise. Consequently, QPCPA scheme allows an improvement of pulse contrast by 2-3 orders of magnitude. The results presented in this paper provide a new perspective on high-contrast amplification of ultrashort pulses.
