Abstract:Spinel LiMn2O4 has been synthesized by solid state reaction with industrial grade Mn3O4 and Li2CO3 as precursors without purification, and its electrochemical performance for lithium ion battery has been investigated by CR2025 coin cell. The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and scanning electron microscope (SEM) images show that the size of LiMn2O4 particles grow up with increasing temperature of calcination, and the sample synthesized at 800 degrees C for 12 h has the best crystallinity with a submicron size. It can deliver initial capacity of 112.9 mA h/g with capacity retention ratio of 89.1% after 200 cycles at charge/discharge rate of 1 C. The results of cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) also show that it has the highest electrochemical activity and lowest charge transfer impedance. Abstract:Spinel Li1 + xMn2O4 was prepared by the coprecipitation of LiOH and Mn(OH)2 in ethyl alcohol. The particle size is about 2 μm with a narrow distribution. Cyclic voltammetry experiments using the Li/ethylene carbonate + dimethoxyethane + LiClO4/Li1 + xMn2O4 cells show good reversibility of lithium deintercalation and intercalation in the spinel phase of Li1 + xMn2O4 The initial reversible capacities are about 120 mA h/g and 140 mA h/g for x = 0 and x = 0.2, respectively.

Abstract:A soft chemical process was used to synthesize the title Sc-doped Li1.05ScxMn2−xO4 spinel, which involves the combination of proper metal salts in aqueous solution and evaporation with the assistance of ethanol as additive. It was found that the spinel phase could be formed at a modest temperature as low as 400 °C. The powdered spinel samples were characterized by differential thermal analysis and thermogravimetery (DTA/TG) measurements, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy, cyclic voltammetry. The samples were evaluated as cathodic materials for secondary Li-battery exhibiting an improved reversibility and cycleablity, which was attributed to the addition of Sc (III) by stabilizing the spinel lattice.

Abstract:Spinel LiMn2O4 (LMO) is a cathode material that features 3D Li+ diffusion channels, and it offers a range of benefits including low cost, non-toxicity, environmental friendliness, high safety, and excellent rate performance. Consequently, it has become a popular cathode material for lithium-ion batteries, having gained practical application. However, the cycling performance of LMO is still limited by problems such as Jahn-Teller distortion and Mn dissolution. In recent years, researchers have proposed various preparation and modification methods to address these problems and achieve wider commercialization of LMO cathode materials. This paper introduces the spinel structure of LMO and its degradation mechanisms, listing several common methods for synthesizing LMO cathode materials and modification approaches aimed at improving cyclic stability. These presentations can provide useful references for further enhancing the comprehensive performance of spinel LMO cathode materials.

Abstract:Although the electrochemical properties of porous LiMn2O4 microspheres are usually improved compared to those of irregular LiMn2O4 particles, the effects of the different synthesis conditions on the preparation of the porous LiMn2O4 microspheres are rarely discussed in detail. In the present work, porous LiMn2O4 microspheres were successfully synthesized by using molten LiOH and porous Mn2O3 spheres as a template. Multiple factors were considered in the preparation process, including reagent concentration, pH, adding mode, heating time, etc. The morphology of the MnCO3 template was crucial for the preparation of porous LiMn2O4 microspheres and it was mainly affected by the concentration of reactants and the pH value of the solution during the precipitation process. During the lithiation of Mn2O3 microspheres, the heating temperature and the ratio between Mn2O3 and lithium salt were the most significant variables in terms of control over the morphology and purity of the LiMn2O4 microspheres. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the porous LiMn2O4 microspheres presented better rate capability and cyclability compared to commercial LiMn2O4 powder as cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). This study not only highlights the shape-controllable synthesis of LiMn2O4 microspheres as promising cathode materials, but also provides some useful guidance for the synthesis of porous LiMn2O4 microspheres and other LIB' electrode materials.

Abstract:Abstract The nano layered-spinel 0.8Li2MnO3·0.2LiMn2O4 cathode material has been synthesized by a simple solvothermal method. X-ray diffraction studies show that the as-prepared material has two compositions, including Li2MnO3 and LiMn2O4. Moreover, the surface morphology of the precursor and cathode material were characterized by scanning electron microscopy. Meanwhile, the EDS graph reflects homogeneous mixing of the two compositions due to the novel precursor synthesizing method. Consequently, as a cathode material for LIBs, the resulting nano layered-spinel 0.8Li2MnO3·0.2LiMn2O4 achieves a high discharge capacity of 248 mA h g−1 at 25 mA g−1 and 162 mA h g−1 even at 1250 mA g−1. In addition, the cathode material shows a high reversible capability with 180 mA h g−1 after 50 cycles, which delivers medium cycling performance.

Abstract:Spinel LiMn2O4, whose electrochemical activity was first reported by Prof. John B. Goodenough's group at Oxford in 1983, is an important cathode material for lithium‐ion batteries that has attracted continuous academic and industrial interest. It is cheap and environmentally friendly, and has excellent rate performance with 3D Li+ diffusion channels. However, it suffers from severe degradation, especially under extreme voltages and during high‐temperature operation. Here, the current understanding and future trends of the spinel cathode and its derivatives with cubic lattice symmetry (LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 that shows high‐voltage stability, and Li‐rich spinels that show reversible hybrid anion‐ and cation‐redox activities) are discussed. Special attention is given to the degradation mechanisms and further development of spinel cathodes, as well as concepts of utilizing the cubic spinel structure to stabilize high‐capacity layered cathodes and as robust framework for high‐rate electrodes. "Good spinel" surface phases like LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 are distinguished from "bad spinel" surface phases like Mn3O4.

Abstract:A novel process was proposed for preparing spinel LiMn2O4 with spherical particles from cheap materials of MnSO4, NaOH, NH3•H2O and LiOH. Its successful preparation started with a carefully controlled crystallization of Mn3O4, leading to the spherical shape of its particles and a high tap density. The mixture of Mn3O4 and LiOH was sintered to produce LiMn2O4 with spherical particle size retention. The spherical particles of spinel LiMn2O4 were of excellent fluidity and dispersivity, and had tap density as high as 2.14 g cm-3 and the initial discharge capacity reaching 128 mAh g-1. Its 15th cycle capacity kept to be 125 mAh g-1.

Abstract:Spinel LiMn2O4 crystal with the grain sizes of about 15 nm is firstly synthesized by hydrothermal route at 180 degrees C using MnO2 as a precursor. The LiMn2O4 powders synthesized by hydrothermal technique and sol-gel reaction were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The LiMn2O4 samples were used as cathode materials for lithium-ion battery, whose electrochemical properties were investigated. Abstract:Spinel LiMn2O4 (LMO) is a state-of-the-art cathode material for Li-ion batteries. However, the operating voltage and battery life of spinel LMO needs to be improved for application in various modern technologies. Modifying the composition of the spinel LMO material alters its electronic structure, thereby increasing its operating voltage. Additionally, modifying the microstructure of the spinel LMO by controlling the size and distribution of the particles can improve its electrochemical properties. In this study, we elucidate the sol-gel synthesis mechanisms of two common types of sol-gels (modified and unmodified metal complexes)—chelate gel and organic polymeric gel—and investigate their structural and morphological properties and electrochemical performances. This study highlights that uniform distribution of cations during sol-gel formation is important for the growth of LMO crystals. Furthermore, a homogeneous multicomponent sol-gel, necessary to ensure that no conflicting morphologies and structures would degrade the electrochemical performances, can be obtained when the sol-gel has a polymer-like structure and uniformly bound ions; this can be achieved by using additional multifunctional reagents, namely cross-linkers.

Abstract:Highly crystalline spinel LiMn2O4 was successfully synthesized by annealing lithiated MnO2 at a relative low temperature of 600°C, in which the lithiated MnO2 was prepared by chemical lithiation of the electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD) and LiI. The LiI/MnO2 ratio and the annealing temperature were optimized to obtain the pure phase LiMn2O4. With the LiI/MnO2 molar ratio of 0.75, and annealing temperature of 600°C, the resulting compounds showed a high initial discharge capacity of 127mAhg−1 at a current rate of 40mAhg−1. Moreover, it exhibited excellent cycling and high rate capability, maintaining 90% of its initial capacity after 100 charge–discharge cycles, at a discharge rate of 5C, it kept more than 85% of the reversible capacity compared with that of 0.1C.

Abstract:Spinel cathode materials consisting of LiMn2O4@LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 hollow microspheres have been synthesized by a facile solution-phase coating and subsequent solid-phase lithiation route in an atmosphere of air. When used as the cathode of lithium-ion batteries, the double-shell LiMn2O4@LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 hollow microspheres thus obtained show a high specific capacity of 120mAhg(-1) at 1C rate, and excellent rate capability (90mAhg(-1) at 10C) over the range of 3.5-5V versus Li/Li+ with a retention of 95% over 500cycles.
