Abstract:It is a valid method adopting reinforced steel in concrete as ground system of transmission-line tower. The paper studied the water-absorbing property of concrete, the conductive property and current-withstanding ability of grounding system adopting reinforced steel in concrete and discussed its corrosion mechanism. The equivalent coefficient of concrete in decreasing power frequency ground resistance was drawn by an experimental method.

Abstract:Grounding is a hot topic in electrical engineering, especially when it is necessary to deal with its transient behaviour under a lightning surge where inductive and conductive couplings among elements and the soil ionisation are not negligible. The chapter will introduce to the nonlinear and dynamic phenomenon caused by soil ionisation and the frequency variation of soil parameters first, and then the numerical methods applied to simulate the transient behaviour of grounding grids.

Abstract:The corrosion of grounding materials seriously threatens the safe operation of the power system. The corrosion resistance of four typical grounding materials as carbon steel, galvanized steel, Zn–Al-coated steel, copper was studied in acid red soil. The results show that carbon steel, galvanized steel, Zn–Al-coated steel, copper exhibit different corrosion resistance behaviors, respectively. The corrosion rate of these grounding materials usually increases first and then slowly decreases. Pitting corrosion is the main corrosion feature of carbon steel. The corrosion rate of carbon steel is the largest compared to the other three grounding materials. The corrosion rate of galvanized steel is higher than that of copper. Copper has a low corrosion rate and exhibits good corrosion resistance, but the cost of copper is high and it causes heavy metal pollution. The corrosion rate of Zn–Al-coated steel is the lowest compared to the other three grounding materials, and it has the best corrosion resistance.

Lightning Impulse Performances of Grounding Devices Covered with Low-Resistivity Materials

Abstract:The low-resistivity material (LRM) is widely used to decrease the power-frequency grounding resistances of grounding devices for transmission lines in the regions with high soil resistivity. The study about the influence of the LRM on impulse performances of grounding devices cannot be found in literature. Experimental results of lightning impulse properties of grounding devices covered with LRM were presented in this paper. The influences of impulse current, geometrical dimensions of grounding devices, and soil resistivity on impulse grounding resistance and impulse coefficient of grounding devices with the LRM coverings are still the same with those without the LRM coverings. The impulse grounding resistance decreases from about 25% to 45% when the LRM covering is used. The fitting formulae to calculate the reducing ratio of impulse grounding resistance of different grounding devices are provided. On the other hand, the influence of LRM on the effective impulse length of grounding electrodes is discussed.

Abstract:To solve the problems in the ground grids composed of galvanized steel,research on metals for ground conductors is necessary.Based on the existing standards and information on metals for grounding,this paper,aiming to provide a reference for ground engineering,makes an analysis on several corrosion resistant metals,such as copper,copper-clad steel,stainless steel and zinc-clad steel,in terms of the resistance to ground corrosion,the required conductor size as a function of conductor current.A comprehensive review is made on the technical and economic characteristics in view of the material cost,construction cost and maintenance cost.

Abstract:Corrosion on grounding rod can significantly increase the grounding resistance and compromise the safety of the power system. Applying a layer of conductive coating on the grounding conductor is an effective way of slowing down the corrosion. In this paper, a conductive RTV silicone coating was introduced, and the proper volume resistance of the coating was calculated and proved that the grounding resistance will not rise after the conductor being applied with this coating. Conductive fillers such as carbon fiber and silver covered glass ball and nano-particles such as carbon black are used and compared.

Abstract:The problems related to grounding systems of substations and power plants include geological structure analysis of substation site, the precise design of grounding system, the technology to decrease grounding resistance of substation in high soil resistivity area, corrosion diagnosis of grounding system, precise measurement of grounding resistance of substation, and impulse characteristics of grounding devices. Up to present, these six aspects related to grounding technology of power system have been widely studied, and achieved satisfied results in China. These achievements were systematically introduced in this paper.

Abstract:The corrosion of grounding grid materials in soil is a prominent factor in power and electrical equipment failure. This paper aims to delve into the corrosion characteristics of grounding grid materials and the corresponding methods of safeguarding against this phenomenon. Firstly, the influencing factors of the soil environment on the corrosion of the grounding grid are introduced, including soil physicochemical properties, microorganisms, and stray currents. Then, the corrosion behavior and durability of common grounding grid materials such as copper, carbon steel, and galvanized steel are discussed in detail and compared comprehensively. In addition, commonly used protective measures in China and outside China, including anti-corrosion coatings, electrochemical protection, and other technologies are introduced. Finally, it summarizes the current research progress and potential future directions of this field of study.

Abstract:Grounding is the fundamental measure of lightning protection for power systems, industries, and buildings, and the lightning impulse behavior of grounding electrodes plays a very important role. How to correctly consider the lightning impulse characteristics of grounding electrodes is the fundament in lightning protection design. This paper summarized the progress in lightning impulse characteristics of grounding electrodes with soil ionization, including the images of soil ionization, the residual resistivity of ionized soil, the critical breakdown electrical field, the impulse breakdown delay characteristics of soil, and the impulse breakdown mechanism of soil. Finally, the numerical simulation methods for lightning impulse characteristics of grounding electrodes are classified, and some key performances of grounding electrodes under lightning impulse were presented.

Abstract:Due to the large scale,scattered arrangement,loose connection,and non-uniform soil of a grounding system of hydroelectric power plant,the longitudinal impedance characteristics of grounding materials may obviously affect the grounding resistance.Consequently,according to the distribution characteristics of grounding system in hydroelectric power plants,we established a voltage-different grounding system model by taking the effects of the longitudinal impedance into consideration and using the field-circuit coupling method,and analyzed the influence of commonly used grounding materials such as copper and steel on the ground impedance of large-scale hydropower plant with different soil models and different current injected points.Moreover,we put forward a measure to reduce the ground impedance by using suitable material.The analysis results show that,although grounding material has little effect on the grounding resistance of substations,its effect on that of hydropower grounding system is remarkable.Traditional formula for analyzing the grounding system is not suitable for hydroelectric power plants,and numerical methods are necessary.When the current injected point is located on bank,the difference of the grounding resistance between copper and steel is up to more than two times.Copper electrode can significantly reduce the grounding resistance of a hydropower plant.It is recommended to use copper conductors to connect different parts of a grounding system,which is both economical and effective.
Influence of vertical grounding electrodes on electrical characteristics of grounding systems

Abstract:The safety of grounding systems for substations or power generating stations in high resistivity areas is very important in the power system, since the grounding systems need to be buried very deeply as a very important countermeasure to improve the safety of substations or power generating stations. The influences of vertical grounding electrodes on grounding resistance, step and touch voltages were analyzed numerically. The results show that the vertical grounding electrodes can effectively decrease grounding resistance, step and touch voltages of the grounding system and reduce the influence of seasonal factors on the grounding system. However, the grounding system becomes saturated as more vertical grounding electrodes are arranged in a substation with a fixed size. The analysis results provide a very useful reference for electrical engineers.

Abstract:Impulse characteristic and discharge process of grounding device of pole and tower for transmission line under the action of impulse current are subject to many factors, it is unreasonable to only use a constant as grounding impulse coefficient for power frequency and impulse ground impedance conversion. The paper makes a study of and analyzes the influence pattern of grounding body material, conductor section, layout type on power frequency and impulse impedance under the action of lightning current and power frequency and the influence pattern of current magnitude and wave head time on impulse grounding impedance. The relation expression between impulse and power frequency ground impedance is obtained based on feasibility analysis of decoupling of inductance effect and spark effect under the impulse current. It is observed from field test data analysis and verification that the spark effect and inductance effect decoupling may obtain accurate impulse ground impedance value by calculation, with fitting formula for impulse ground impedance recommended for zone with soil resistivity more than or less than100Ω·m.

Abstract:The components of non-metallic grounding module and mechanism of resistance reduction was described.Through impulse current test platform,impulse current test had been done on grounding modules of different size,different shape and different material under different earth resistivity.The test data showed that when they had same current scattering area the current scattering effect of cylindrical grounding module was better than rectangular grounding module under different impulse current,the greater impulse current with the more obvious of the current scattering effect;The increase of grounding module size or current scattering area would increase its resistance reduction effect,but this effect was saturated trend;The resistance reduction rate of grounding module had nothing to do with the soil resistivity,the greater of the soil resistivity,the more obvious of the resistance reduction effect;The resistance reduction effect of graphite type grounding module could be compared to traditional metal grounding body and the resistance reduction effect of graphite was very obvious,its would provide the reference for the engineering application.

In the first part, the ingredients and the principle of resistance reducing of grounding module were introduced. Then, set up the model of ground grids and simulated under different situations like the different fixed position of grounding module, ground grids acreage and soil resistivity by CDEGS software.. Abstract:Corrosion on grounding rod can significantly increase the grounding resistance and compromise the safety of the power system. Silicone rubber used in outdoor insulation area for its long life in adverse environments. This paper proposes a kind of conductive RTV silicone coating suitable for grounding systems. Conductive nano-particles such as carbon black and carbon fiber are added to reduce the resistivity to about 10 Omegaldrcm. Experiment results shows that this material is effective in eliminating corrosion.

Abstract:In this paper, based on the moment method and the circuit theory, an approach is proposed to analyze the current distribution and the electromagnetic field of a building struck by lightning. By introducing the concept of complex resistivity in the air and the soil, the approach can consider the metallic grids under the ground and above the ground altogether. Both the potential differences among the grounding parts and the electromagnetic interactions among the grids are taken into account. It shows that the resistivity of soil will affect the electromagnetic field greatly. When the electromagnetic fields around buildings near the lightning struck point are investigated, or when a building has a separated grounding system, the effect of the grounding systems must be considered.

Abstract:The components of non-metallic grounding module and mechanism of resistance reduction was described.The regular pattern of grounding resistance at variation of number and fitting location of the grounding modules,grounding grid area and soil resistivity was analyzed using grounding grid simulation.The maximum current occured at edge corners of grounding grid at current scattering,so the grounding modules shall preferably installed at edge corners.The resistance reduction effect of the same modules differs with the same grounding modules,the less the grounding grid the better effect obtained.Shield effect may occur between grounding modules which reduces resistance reduction.The higher the soil resistivity,the better the resistance reduction effect of grounding modules.The reduction rate of grounding grid resistance using grounding modules is the same at different soil resistivity.

Abstract:T he grounding mesh of traction substations plays a key role in the safe and stable operation of the traction power supply system.With the increase of the operation time of the grounding mesh,the characteris-tic parameters in excess of the standard caused by grounding conductor corrosion,are harmful to the safe and stable operation of the traction power supply system.In this paper,the CDEGS professional grounding simu-lation software was used to carry out the simulation calculation,to analyze the influence of grounding conduc-tor corrosion on the grounding resistance of the grounding mesh,when the soil resistivity,grounding mesh ar-ea and grounding mesh equalizing conductor arrangement method are different.Results show that,with the decrease of soil resistivity,the degree of grounding conductor corrosion increases,resulting in greater impact on the grounding resistance.Under the same corrosion conditions,the wider the grounding mesh area,the greater the grounding resistance of the grounding mesh.Under the same grounding mesh area and steel con-sumption,through a reasonable choice of grounding mesh equalizing conductor arrangement method,the in-fluence of corrosion on the grounding resistance of grounding mesh can be reduced to achieve economic and technological optimization.
