Abstract:Ge nanocrystals embedded in SiO2 glasses were prepared by an easy sol–gel method. The gels synthesized through hydrolysis of Si(OC2H5)4 and 3-trichloro-germaniumpropanoic acid (Cl3–Ge–C2H4–COOH) were heated at 600°C for 10h in air atmosphere to form GeO2–SiO2 glasses. The gel-glasses were further heated at 500–700°C in H2 gas atmosphere, in which Ge4+ were reduced to precipitate cubic Ge nanocrystals. The size of Ge crystals is estimated to be from 1 to 13nm according to the XRD and TEM. The optical absorption edge shifts to higher energy with decrease in the content of Ge in the starting materials, and in the heating temperature and time in H2 gas atmosphere. This phenomenon is interpreted in terms of a quantum confinement effect of electrons and holes in the Ge nanocrystals.

Abstract:A novel solvothermal method has been successfully developed to prepare nanocrystalline CuSbS2 and Ag3SbS3 by the reactions between CuI and AgNO3 with SbCl3 and elemental sulfur in ethylenediamine at 140°C for 12 h, respectively. XRD, TEM and XPS examinations investigated the phase, grain size, morphology and purity of the products, respectively. Ethylenediamine played important roles in the formation of the ternary sulfides. A possible mechanism is proposed and expected to explain similar reactions.

Abstract:The structure of CIGS thin film solar cells and new research results in their absorption layer fabrications were described. The vacuum and non-vacuum preparation techniques were compared and non-vacuum preparation techniques has the advantages on printing speed, low cost and mass production. CIGS nanocrystals with small and uniform size synthesized are the key technology for the non-vacuum preparation method. We reviewed the research development on various synthesize of CIGS nanomaterials including low temperature sol-gel, microwave, solvothermal, hot injection, gas reduction, and chemical deposition process etc., and the advantages and disadvantages of various methods at the end of the paper. The suggestions and views on further study of CIGS nanoparticles were also presented.

Abstract:Cu- or Ag-containing ternary chalcogenides (Cu2SnS3, Cu2SnSe4, Ag8SnS6, and Ag8SnSe6) were prepared through a one-step solvothermal process in the temperature range of 150– 190°C. Three kinds of tin sources were investigated by changing the molar ratio, reaction time, and temperature. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to characterize the products.

Abstract:Nanocrystallines CdSe semiconductor was synthesized through a novel solvothermal process, in which CdCl2, Se, and Na reacted at 120°C for 6h in an autoclave, and ethylenediamine was used as a solvent. An XRD pattern indicated a hexagonal CdSe phase. TEM imaging showed that the product consisted of homogeneous granular particles with an average size of about 7 nm. Photoluminescence spectra of the 7-nm CdSe showed a 0.3-eV blue shift compared with that of the bulk materials, indicating its quantum confinement.

Abstract:Nearly monodisperse CdS semiconductor nanocrystals have been successfully fabricated by a simple solvothermal route using cheap and low-cost normal inorganic compounds as precursors. The reaction temperature is demonstrated to be critical for the fabrication of the monodisperse nanocrystals. The nanocrystals were characterized by XRD, TEM, UV-vis absorption and photoluminescence spectra. Without involving special conditions, this method can be expected to make considerable contribution to the fabrication of various nanocrystals and nanocrystals-related research.

Abstract:A direct route has been developed to synthesize nanocrystalline transition-metal selenides via a mild solvothermal process based on the reactions between Se and metal halides MCln (M = Ni, Co, Pb, Sn, Bi) in ethylenediamine at 80–160°C. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron spectroscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterized the products as being thin-plate NiSe2, CoSe, PbSe, Bi2Se3, and SnSe nanocrystallites. The formation mechanism was studied.

Abstract:Chalcopyrite quaternary semiconductor CuIn(SexS1 - x)(2) nanocrystallites (0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 1) were successfully prepared via a relatively simple and convenient solvothermal route. From X-ray data it is found that the cell constants a and c vary linearly with the composition x as: a(Angstrom) = 5.5299 + 0.2665x, c(Angstrom) = 11.1004 + 0.5139x. The sample CuInSeS was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and infrared spectroscopy (IR). The optical property of CuIn(SexS1 - x)(2) nanocrystallites was also recorded by means of UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy. In addition, the effect of different solvents on the formation of the product was studied to indicate that ethylenediamine is the optimal solvent for this reaction. Finally, the reaction mechanism in ethylenediamine was also investigated.

Abstract:5 nm thiospinel FeIn2S4 nanocrystallines were prepared through a solvothermal process at 280 °C. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) reveal that the product was nanocrystalline FeIn2S4, with cubic cell, and uniform spherical particle morphology. The factors to the formation of uniform FeIn2S4 nanocrystallines with a narrow size distribution were discussed also.

Abstract:Nanoparticles of tin disulfide have been successfully prepared by the solvent–thermal synthesis method using different precursors. The X-ray powder diffraction patterns showed that the products were hexagonal SnS2 phase and transmission electron microscope images displayed that the samples were laminar particles with the average size of about 150nm. The Raman spectra showed a sharp peak at 311cm−1, which is characteristic of SnS2. The IR spectra determined the absence of tin oxides. In addition, the possible routes of the reactions were discussed.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline Ag2Se was synthesized at room temperature through the reaction of AgNO3, Se, and KBH4 in pyridine. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). TEM revealed that the as-prepared Ag2Se grains were homogeneous and spherical, and their average size was about 25 nm. XPS analysis showed that the purity was good. Different solvent media were tested, and pyridine was found to be the most suitable one. The possible mechanism of the formation of Ag2Se grains is proposed. This novel mild method will be extended to prepare other nanocrystalline chalcogenides at room temperature.

Abstract:Water-soluble cubic structure Ag2Se (α-Ag2Se) nanocrystals smaller than 5 nm can be obtained by cation-exchange reaction at room temperature, using water-dispersed ZnSe nanocrystals as precursors, which is achieved by controlling the injection speed of AgNO3 solutions via a syringe pump in the presence of the stabilizer of trisodium citrate. Meanwhile, the thermal stability of the product Ag2Se nanocrystals is studied. The results show that the mean sizes and shapes of the precursor ZnSe and product Ag2Se nanocrystals are similar, and Se anion sublattices between them are topotaxial. In addition, no phase transition is observed for the product Ag2Se (cubic structure) nanocrystals below 180 °C. The present synthetic method based on cation-exchange reactions can also be applied to the syntheses of PbSe and CuSe nanocrystals.

Abstract:In2S3 nanoparticles, short nanowhiskers, nanorods and finger-structure nanocrystals with stoichimetric composition and high quality can be prepared by a solvent-reduction route. It was found that the reagent concentrations, solvent and reaction temperature played important roles in the shape control. We also successfully used CTAB to modify the shape of products. The resulting structures were found to be quantum-confined.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline Bi2Se3 was synthesized by a novel solvothermal method at low temperature. During the solvothermal process, BiCl3, Se, and NaI were kept in an autoclave at 130°C for 4 h. NaI was used as the reductant. Ethylenediamine was selected as the solvent and played an important role in the formation of nanocrystalline Bi2Se3. The product was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). As-prepared nanocrystalline Bi2Se3 consisted of nearly homogenous and spherical grains; the average size was about 25 nm.

Abstract:Metastable (beta and gamma) and stable (alpha) MnS crystallites were synthesized by solvothermal reaction in various solvents at 190-200 degreesC. In tetrahydrofuran and benzene, the metastable MnS crystallites can be obtained. In water, ammonia liquor, ethylenediamine, alpha -MnS, which is converted from the metastable phase, would be obtained. The low solubility of MnS is the crucial reason to stabilize the metastable phase with good yield. The metastable MnS crystallites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The metastable gamma -MnS crystallites with rodlike morphology were found, and a unique "methane-like" four-branched rod cluster was characterized. The blue shift of the absorption edge indicates the quantum size effect of metastable MnS nanocrystallites.
