Abstract:Ni-catalyzed C(sp(3))-O bond activation provides a useful approach to synthesize enantioenriched products from readily available enantioenriched benzylic alcohol derivatives. The control of stereospecificity is key to the success of these transformations. To elucidate the reversed stereospecificity and chemoselectivity of Ni-catalyzed Kumada and cross-electrophile coupling reactions with benzylic ethers, a combined computational and experimental study is performed to reach a unified mechanistic understanding. Kumada coupling proceeds via a classic cross-coupling mechanism. Initial rate-determining oxidative addition occurs with stereoinversion of the benzylic stereogenic center. Subsequent transmetalation with the Grignard reagent and syn-reductive elimination produce the Kumada coupling product with overall stereoinversion at the benzylic position. The cross-electrophile coupling reaction initiates with the same benzylic C-O bond cleavage and transmetalation to form a common benzylnickel intermediate. However, the presence of the tethered alkyl chloride allows a facile intramolecular S(N)2 attack by the benzylnickel moiety. This step circumvents the competing Kumada coupling, leading to the excellent chemoselectivity of cross-electrophile coupling. These mechanisms account for the observed stereospecificity of the Kumada and cross-electrophile couplings, providing a rationale for double inversion of the benzylic stereogenic center in cross-electrophile coupling. The improved mechanistic understanding will enable design of stereoselective transformations involving Ni-catalyzed C(sp(3))-O bond activation.

Abstract:A nickel-catalyzed Kumada coupling of aniline derivatives was developed by selective cleavage of aryl C-N bonds under mild reaction conditions. Without preinstallation of an ortho directing group on anilines, the cross-coupling reactions of Boc-protected aromatic amines with aryl Grignard reagents afforded unsymmetric biaryls. Mechanistic studies by DFT calculations revealed that the nickel-mediated C-N bond cleavage is the rate-limiting step.

Abstract:The application of amine derivatives as coupling partners is rare due to the inherent strength of the C-N bond. Herein, we report the first cross-electrophile coupling reaction of unstrained benzylic sulfonamides. Nickel-catalyzed intramolecular cross-electrophile coupling reactions of acyclic and cyclic benzylic sulfonamides with pendant alkyl chlorides generate cyclopropane products. Mechanistic experiments and DFT calculations are consistent with initiation of the reaction by magnesium iodide accelerated oxidative addition of the benzylic sulfonamide. This work establishes neutral and unstrained amine derivatives as XEC partners, furnishes structural rearrangement of benzylic sulfonamides, and provides valuable information regarding catalyst design for the development of new cross-electrophile coupling reactions of carbon-heteroatom bonds.

Abstract:A nickel pincer complex is found to catalyze alkyl-alkyl Kumada coupling reactions of 1,3- and 1,4-substituted cyclohexyl halides and tetrahydropyrans with an excellent diastereoselectivity. The mechanistic investigation of the coupling reactions provides evidence that the activation of alkyl halides is reversible.

Abstract:Abstract Mixed alkyl/aryl diphos ligands have been prepared and their application in iron‐catalyzed cross coupling of benzylic chlorides with diaryl zinc (Negishi) or aryl Grignard reagents (Kumada) towards the synthesis of diarylmethane has been evaluated. The iron−diphos catalytic system exhibited the enhanced activity and selectivity in the two coupling reactions. The electron‐rich mixed PPh 2 /PCy 2 ligands outperformed their symmetrical PPh 2 congeners, and led to decreased homocoupling byproduct formation. It indicates that the electronic effect of the ligands plays an important role in the catalytic performance. The Fe catalyst supported by L8 bearing an electron‐rich PCy 2 substituent and a sterically demanding tert‐butyl on ethene backbone exhibited the best catalytic performance and good functional group tolerance in the two cross coupling reactions.

Abstract:The synthesis of thioether or selenoether through the cross-coupling of C-S or C-Se bond is a high attractive research area due to the prevalence of thioether or selenoether in pharmaceutically active compounds, bioactive natural compounds, agrochemicals, and functional materials. Herein, a novel and general method has been developed for the construction of C-S or C-Se bonds using Katritzky pyridinium salts with disulfides or diselenides in the presence of nickel catalyst. This procedure exhibits remarkable functional group tolerance. Under mild reaction condition, a variety of thioethers and selenoethers is successfully and efficiently obtained through deaminative cross-coupling.

Abstract:Aryl sulfides play an important role in pharmaceuticals, biologically active molecules and polymeric materials. Herein, a general and efficient protocol for Pd@COF-TB (a kind of Pd nanocatalyst supported by a covalent organic framework)/DIPEA-catalyzed one-pot synthesis of symmetrical diaryl sulfides through a C-S coupling reaction from aryl iodides and Na2S2O3 is developed. More importantly, the addition of N,N-diisopropylethylamine (DIPEA) can not only enhance the catalytic activity of a Pd@COF-TB nanocatalyst, but also effectively inhibit the formation of biphenyl byproducts, which are a product of Ullmann reaction. Besides, it has been confirmed that the aryl Bunte salts generated in situ from Na2S2O3 and aryl iodides are the sulfur sources involved in this C-S coupling reaction. With the strategy proposed in this work, a variety of symmetrical diaryl sulfides could be obtained in moderate to excellent yields with a high tolerance of various functional groups. Moreover, a possible mechanism of this Pd nanoparticle-catalyzed C-S coupling reaction is proposed based on the results of controlling experiments.

Abstract:A novel Kumada-Tamao-Corriu cross-coupling reaction of gem-di- or monofluoroalkenes with Grignard reagents, with or without beta-hydrogen atoms, in the presence of a catalytic amount of palladium- or nickel-based catalysts has been developed. The reaction is performed under mild conditions (room temperature or reflux in diethyl ether for 1-2 h) and leads to di-cross- or mono-cross-coupled products in good to high yields.

Abstract:This work describes the first Ni-catalyzed cross-electrophile coupling of alkylpyridinium salts, derived from the corresponding amines, with aryl iodide, bromoalkyne or bromoalkyl coupling partners. C(sp)-C(sp 3 ), C(sp 2 )-C(sp 3 ) and C(sp 3 )-C(sp 3 ) bond formation was achieved to afford a variety of synthetically useful arenes, alkynes and alkanes in good yields from 2 - 33 . The advantages of the methodology are showcased in the two-step synthesis of the key lactonic moiety of (+)-Compactin and (+)-Mevinolin from commercially available starting materials. A one-pot procedure without isolation of alkylpyridinium tetrafluoroborate salt was also demonstrated to be successful. This work represents a new strategy for the cross-coupling reaction of two electrophiles, and also provides a complementary and highly valuable vista for the current methodologies of alkyl arene/alkyne/alkane synthesis.

Abstract:A nickel-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction of aryl methyl sulfides with aryl bromides has been developed to access biaryls in yields of up to 86%. The reactions proceeded well using Ni(COD) as catalyst with the ligand BINAP (2,2'-bis(diphenylphosphanyl)-1,1'-binaphthalene) in the presence of magnesium. The method has a broad scope of substrates and is scalable. The wide availability of commercially available aryl bromides and the absence of preparation and preparation of organometallic reagents make the reaction of high application value.

Abstract:Abstract Cross-coupling reactions have developed into powerful approaches for carbon–carbon bond formation. In this work, a Ni-catalyzed migratory Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling featuring high benzylic or allylic selectivity has been developed. With this method, unactivated alkyl electrophiles and aryl or vinyl boronic acids can be efficiently transferred to diarylalkane or allylbenzene derivatives under mild conditions. Importantly, unactivated alkyl chlorides can also be successfully used as the coupling partners. To demonstrate the applicability of this method, we showcase that this strategy can serve as a platform for the synthesis of terminal, partially deuterium-labeled molecules from readily accessible starting materials. Experimental studies suggest that migratory cross-coupling products are generated from Ni(0/II) catalytic cycle. Theoretical calculations indicate that the chain-walking occurs at a neutral nickel complex rather than a cationic one. In addition, the original-site cross-coupling products can be obtained by alternating the ligand, wherein the formation of the products has been rationalized by a radical chain process.

Abstract:A structure-activity study was carried out for Ni catalyzed alkyl-alkyl Kumada-type cross coupling reactions. A series of new nickel(II) complexes including those with tridentate pincer bis(amino)amide ligands ((R)N(2)N) and those with bidentate mixed amino-amide ligands ((R)NN) were synthesized and structurally characterized. The coordination geometries of these complexes range from square planar, tetrahedral, to square pyramidal. The complexes had been examined as precatalysts for cross coupling of nonactivated alkyl halides, particularly secondary alkyl iodides, with alkyl Grignard reagents. Comparison was made to the results obtained with the previously reported Ni pincer complex [((Me)N(2)N)NiCl]. A transmetalation site in the precatalysts is necessary for the catalysis. The coordination geometries and spin-states of the precatalysts have a small or no influence. The work led to the discovery of several well-defined Ni catalysts that are significantly more active and efficient than the pincer complex [((Me)N(2)N)NiCl] for the coupling of secondary alkyl halides. The best two catalysts are [((H)NN)Ni(PPh(3))Cl] and [((H)NN)Ni(2,4-lutidine)Cl]. The improved activity and efficiency was attributed to the fact that phosphine and lutidine ligands in these complexes can dissociate from the Ni center during catalysis. The activation of alkyl halides was shown to proceed via a radical mechanism.

Abstract:Herein, a facile and efficient thiolation method is presented, involving Ni-catalyzed cross-coupling of readily available disulfides with diverse bromides, promoted by ball milling. This Ni-catalyzed modular approach demonstrates excellent functional group tolerance and a broad substrate scope, including acidic molecules. Furthermore, the plausible mechanism was extensively investigated and proposed, incorporating multiple valence states of Ni to complete the catalytic cycle. Moreover, green factors were compared with conventional solution methods. The practicality of this transformation is thus demonstrated for the synthesis of sulfur-containing organic compounds, highlighting its high efficiency and eco-friendliness.
