Abstract:A series of di-anionic cleavable surfactants were prepared by the condensation of aldehydes with 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)-1,3-propanediol, followed by reaction with 1,3-propanesultone in the presence of sodium hydride. Surfactant 5a had a different1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum in D2O than products 5b−d. This was rationalized by its different conformation, which originates from the self-coiling of its alkyl chain. The critical micelle concentrations, Krafft points and hydrolysis properties of these surfactants were determined.

Abstract:A new group of cleavable di-anionic surfactants aliphatic glycerol acetal di-sodium sulfosuccinates has been successfully synthesized starting from esterification reaction of aliphatic glycerol acetals with maleic anhydride, followed by sulfonation with sodium sulfite. The prepared surfactants were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), mass spectroscopy (MS) and elemental analysis. The surface active properties of the new surfactants, such as surface tension, critical micelle concentration (CMC), foaming property, and emulsifying power were determined.

Abstract:A series of quaternary ammonium vesicle-forming surfactants was prepared by cyclization of 2,2-dialkyl-1,3-propanediols with 3-bromopropanal, followed by reaction with refluxing triethylamine. The critical vesicle concentrations of these surfactants fell in the range of 10-5-10-6M , which were smaller than the critical micelle concentrations of their counterparts containing only one alkyl chain. The fact that the destructibility of these surfactants was similar to their counterparts bearing only one alkyl chain gave further evidence to the conclusion that the morphology, micelle or vesicle, has little effect on the hydrolytic properties. The sonicated dispersions of these surfactants were single-compartment vesicles with their diameters ranging from 200 to 600 Å. The reactions of TEMPO-12 with VC and TEMPO-OH with VC-12 in the vesicle of 4b prepared by sonication or stirring were studied by ESR spectroscopy with stopped-flow technique. The reaction behavior was explained by the electrostatic attraction of VC/VC-12 by the cationic head groups of surfactants, the flip-flop motion and diffusion of the spin probe/VC-12, and the morphology of these vesicles.

Abstract:A novel series of biobased branched nonionic surfactants (ethoxylated dihydroxy stearic acid methyl ester, DMOEn) was synthesized and characterized. DMOEn was based on a hydroxyoctadecanoic acid methyl ester, which was obtained from renewable oleic acid in waste cooking oil. These new polyoxyethylene surfactants contained double hydrophilic and hydrophobic chains, which shows the surface properties of the branched surfactant. The synthesis rules and reaction kinetic were studied in detail. The physicochemical properties and surface properties of the DMOEn with different degrees of ethoxylation at various concentrations were investigated. The surface tension results indicate that DMOEn reduced the surface tension reduction and increased the diffusion rate in aqueous solution. The dynamic contact angle, foaming ability and emulsifying capacity tests showed that the DMOEn exhibited good wetting performance, low foaming, rapid defoaming and an excellent emulsifying ability, which shows that the surfactant has potential application in industrial cleaning.

Abstract:Surface tension, micelle formation, surface adsorption, and solubilization of dimethylaminoazobenzene (DMAB) are studied in aqueous solutions of 3-alkoxyl-2-hydroxypropyl trimethylammonium chloride (alkoxyl = C n H 2n+1 O, n = 8, 12, 14, 16), of sodium dodecyl sulfonate, and of mixtures of these cationic surfactants and the anionic surfactant at 40°C. Synergistic effects on micelle formation, surface tension reduction, and solubilization enhancement of DMAB are observed in the cationic–anionic mixed surfactant systems. The experimental results are discussed in the light of the interactions between the two kinds of surfactant ions.

Abstract:4-Sulfoalkanoic acids are a class of important dianionic-headed surfactants. Various 4-sulfoalkanoic acids with straight C8, C10, C12, C14, C16, and C18 chains were synthesized expeditiously through the radical addition of methyl 2-((ethoxycarbonothioyl) thio) acetate to linear terminal olefins and subsequent oxidation with peroxyformic acid. This is a useful and convenient strategy for the synthesis of dianionic-headed surfactants with a carboxylic acid and sulfonic acid functionalities in the head group region.

Abstract:Nonionic surfactants each bearing one alkyl chain and two gluconamides, maltobionamides, lactobionamides, or maltotrionamides were prepared by the monoalkylation of malononitrile with alkyl bromide, reduction of two nitrile groups with LiAlH4/AlCl3, and reaction of the alkyldiamine thus produced with the sugar lactone. The surfactants possessed good water solubility. That the surfactants bearing two gluconamide groups showed higher water solubility than the conventional N-alkylgluconamide [RNHCO (CHOH) 4CH2OH] or dialkylbisgluconamide [R2C (CH2NHCO (CHOH) 4CH2OH) 2] with the same alkyl chain length is of particular interest. The critical micelle concentrations (cmcs) of the surfactants decreased with increase in carbon number of the alkyl chain, while the number of sugar unit in hydrophilic portions had little effect on cmcs. Surfactants bearing terminal glucopyranoside residues had remarkable binding affinity toward the sugar-binding protein, Concanavalin A (Con A), while the one with terminal galactopyranoside residues did not. Terminal sugar residues in the surfactants are thus specifically distinguished by Con A.

Abstract:Diglycerol obtained from biomass glycerol has been valorized into selective products by acetalization reaction in the presence of ZnCl2. A synthesis method of monoacetals via catalyst-transfer is carried out encompassing two phase-separated reagents, diglycerol with n-octanal. Mechanistic analysis has revealed that the formation of unstable emulsion promotes the reaction, and the selectivity is affected by the catalyst-transfer direction. By measuring the Zn content in the two phases, we demonstrated the transfer direction of ZnCl2 and the monoacetal were opposite, resulting in separation of the catalyst and the substrate. And the formation of diacetal was retarded. The products monoacetals exhibit superior surfactant properties, especially in terms of foam stability and alkali tolerance.

Abstract:The aldolization of unprotected 1,3-dihydroxyacetone (DHA) was studied under mild conditions (20 degrees C) in a mixture of water/EtOH using hydrocinnamaldehyde as a model substrate. It was shown that trimethylamine is the most effective base for this transformation, giving the corresponding aldol with up to 98% selectivity and 82% yield. The method was extended to a range of (biobased) aldehydes to give alpha-hydroxyketones with 29-70% isolated yields. These alpha-hydroxyketones were reduced under hydrogen using 5%-Ru/Al2O3 in EtOH at 100 degrees C to give tetraols with 79-97% isolated yields. The physicochemical properties of these tetraols were studied (CMC, Krafft point, PIT-slope method), and these studies revealed that this new class of C-C bond-linked nonionic surfactants exhibits high effectiveness, reducing the surface tension of water.

Abstract:Silicone surfactants are increasingly used in the industrial field due to their advantages such as low surface energy, stable performance, and good biocompatibility. However, many polyether-modified silicone surfactants' foam stability and easy hydrolysis in non-neutral aqueous systems limit their application in many fields. In this article, the decynediol-ethoxylate chain segment was grafted onto heptamethyltrisiloxane to synthesize a modified trisiloxane surfactant (G2). FT-IR and 1H NMR characterized its structure. Its surface activity, aggregation behavior, and wetting and spreading properties in water were studied by using instruments such as a surface tension meter, transmission electron microscope (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and contact angle tester. G2 can reduce the surface tension of water to 19.24 mN/m at a lower CMC (40.44 mg/L), and the foaming properties and hydrolysis stability of decynediol-ethoxylate-modified trisiloxane (G2) in water are significantly improved compared with allyl-polyoxyethylene-ether-modified trisiloxane (X5).

Abstract:A new type of anionic trimeric surfactant containing easily degradable carboxylic groups and hydrophilic hydroxyl groups in its molecular structure was synthesized based on harmless and non-toxic propanetriol glycidyl ether, laurylamine and sodium chloroacetate. The title product was characterized by IR and MS. The equilibrium surface tension of the final product was 34.0458mN/m (t=25℃) and 29.1556mN/m(t=60℃), its critical micelle concentration(CMC) was 8.203×10~ -6 mol/L. The content of actives was 89.5. The result also indicated that the new trimeric surfactant exhibited advantages of foaming, foam-stabilizing and lime soap dispersing power(LSDP).

Abstract:<p>In this study, we report the first preparation of a series of lactose-derived acylhydrazone compounds with alkyl side chains ranging from 5 to 10 carbons in length through condensation reactions as a new type of nonionic surfactants. The surface-active, foaming properties, emulsifying properties, thermal stability as well as cytotoxicity were studied to establish the structure-property profile, which revealed that the acylhydrazone derivatives bearing medium-length side chains had better overall performance than their analogs and other selected commercial references. The results could serve as basis for the further development of lactose-derived acylhydrazones as emulsifiers in, for example, food and pharmaceutical industries.</p>

Abstract:Novel cationic gemini surfactants, 1,3-bis[(acyloxyalkyl)dimethylammonio]-2-hydroxypropane dichloride, which possess hydrolyzable oxycarbonyl moieties in the lipophilic portions, were prepared. These surfactants showed much better micelle-forming ability, ability to lower surface tension, foaming ability, and foam stability than corresponding single-chain surfactants. Their surface properties were largely influenced by changing the position of the oxycarbonyl group in the lipophilic moiety. The critical micelle concentration decreased with a decreasing number of methylene units in the linking moiety between the ammonio and the oxycarbonyl groups within the comparison of lipophilic chains of the same length. These cationic gemini surfactants also showed good biodegradability.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, monododecyl diphenyl ether disulfonate (C12-MADS) and didodecyl diphenyl ether disulfonate (C12-DADS) are Friedel-Craft reaction product of 1-dodecene and diphenyl oxide using sulfated zirconium as a catalyst, followed by sulfonation with fuming sulfuric acid in 1,2-dichloroethane and neutralization with aqueous sodium hydroxide solution. The relationship between the structures of the surfactants C12-DADS, C12-MADS and linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (C12-LAS) and their surface and interfacial properties was studied by measuring equilibrium surface tensions, dynamic surface tensions and dynamic interfacial tensions (IFT). The results show that the surface and interfacial activity of C12-MADS is better than that of C12-DADS and C12-LAS. The gemini surfactant C12-DADS shows most unfavorable surface and interfacial activity due to the fact that the cross-linked hydrophobic carbon chains decreases the number of exposed methyl in molecule. The dynamic surface tensions results show that the diffusion coefficients values of C12-MADS and C12-DADS are lower than that of C12-LAS, and the adsorption process of surfactants at air/water interface is a mixed diffusion-kinetic adsorption mechanism. The data of dynamic ITF between aqueous surfactants solutions and dodecane indicate that the NaCl and CaCl2 concentration has a weak effect on the stable value of dynamic IFT for C12-DADS. With increasing the NaCl and CaCl2 concentration, the stable values of dynamic ITF for the three surfactants mostly passes through a minimum at an optimum concentration, and the C12-MADS and C12-LAS can reduce the IFT to the 10−2 mN/m order of magnitude.

Abstract:Abstract Alkyldimethyl (C n DMPO) with chain lengths of n = 8 (octyl), 10 (decyl), 12 (dodecyl), and 14 (tetradecyl) as well as alkyldiethyl (C n DEPO) phosphine oxides with chain lengths of n = 10, 12, and 14 were synthesized and purified to study how the adsorption properties and the location of the miscibility gap of these surfactants depend on the size of the head group and on the length of the alkyl chain. After surfactant purification, the surface tension isotherms were determined from which the cmc, the minimum surface tension σ cmc , the maximum surface concentration Γ max , and the minimum surface area A min were obtained. As expected, for one homologous series, a decrease in the cmc and an increase in Γ max was observed with increasing alkyl chain length. For two surfactants of the same alkyl chain length, the cmc values of the C n DEPO surfactants are approximately two times lower than those of the C n DMPO surfactants. However, the Γ max values of C n DEPO are lower than those of C n DMPO as two ethyl chains are sterically more demanding than two methyl chains. In addition to the adsorption properties, the location of the miscibility gap as a function of the alkyl chain length and the head group size was studied. Its location depends on the total number of carbon atoms and not primarily on the length of the main alkyl chain. This observation reflects the decreasing water solubility which can be tuned by increasing the length of either the main alkyl chain or of the shorter head group chains.

Abstract:A novel oligomeric nonionic surfactant was synthesized with alkylpolyoxyethylene(9) ether (AEO9) and epoxy resin as main materials. The surfactant was characterized by IR and MS and its surface tension was tested. The results showed that the cmc of the surfactant was 1.99 × 10-5 g/mL. The product was mixed with 1631 to form W/O diesel oil microemulsion. The phase diagrams of pseudo-ternary microemulsions consisting of diesel oil, water, mixed surfactant and cosurfactant were obtained. The result indicated that the optimum conditions was that m(nonioninc): m(1631) = 1: 4,m (cosurfactant): m(mixed surfactant) = 1.5:1, and the content of water decreased with the increase of NaCl concentration.
