Abstract:A series of cationic cleavable surfactants was prepared by condensation of 2-alkyl-1,3-propanediols with 3-bromopropanal, followed by reaction with triethylamine. Each surfactant is a mixture of two diastereomers, and their precursors’ stereochemical assignments were based on1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectra and melting points. The critical micelle concentrations, Krafft points and destructibility of these surfactants were determined.

Abstract:A new group of cleavable di-anionic surfactants aliphatic glycerol acetal di-sodium sulfosuccinates has been successfully synthesized starting from esterification reaction of aliphatic glycerol acetals with maleic anhydride, followed by sulfonation with sodium sulfite. The prepared surfactants were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), mass spectroscopy (MS) and elemental analysis. The surface active properties of the new surfactants, such as surface tension, critical micelle concentration (CMC), foaming property, and emulsifying power were determined.

Abstract:A novel series of biobased branched nonionic surfactants (ethoxylated dihydroxy stearic acid methyl ester, DMOEn) was synthesized and characterized. DMOEn was based on a hydroxyoctadecanoic acid methyl ester, which was obtained from renewable oleic acid in waste cooking oil. These new polyoxyethylene surfactants contained double hydrophilic and hydrophobic chains, which shows the surface properties of the branched surfactant. The synthesis rules and reaction kinetic were studied in detail. The physicochemical properties and surface properties of the DMOEn with different degrees of ethoxylation at various concentrations were investigated. The surface tension results indicate that DMOEn reduced the surface tension reduction and increased the diffusion rate in aqueous solution. The dynamic contact angle, foaming ability and emulsifying capacity tests showed that the DMOEn exhibited good wetting performance, low foaming, rapid defoaming and an excellent emulsifying ability, which shows that the surfactant has potential application in industrial cleaning.

Abstract:A series of quaternary ammonium vesicle-forming surfactants was prepared by cyclization of 2,2-dialkyl-1,3-propanediols with 3-bromopropanal, followed by reaction with refluxing triethylamine. The critical vesicle concentrations of these surfactants fell in the range of 10-5-10-6M , which were smaller than the critical micelle concentrations of their counterparts containing only one alkyl chain. The fact that the destructibility of these surfactants was similar to their counterparts bearing only one alkyl chain gave further evidence to the conclusion that the morphology, micelle or vesicle, has little effect on the hydrolytic properties. The sonicated dispersions of these surfactants were single-compartment vesicles with their diameters ranging from 200 to 600 Å. The reactions of TEMPO-12 with VC and TEMPO-OH with VC-12 in the vesicle of 4b prepared by sonication or stirring were studied by ESR spectroscopy with stopped-flow technique. The reaction behavior was explained by the electrostatic attraction of VC/VC-12 by the cationic head groups of surfactants, the flip-flop motion and diffusion of the spin probe/VC-12, and the morphology of these vesicles.

Abstract:Silicone surfactants are increasingly used in the industrial field due to their advantages such as low surface energy, stable performance, and good biocompatibility. However, many polyether-modified silicone surfactants' foam stability and easy hydrolysis in non-neutral aqueous systems limit their application in many fields. In this article, the decynediol-ethoxylate chain segment was grafted onto heptamethyltrisiloxane to synthesize a modified trisiloxane surfactant (G2). FT-IR and 1H NMR characterized its structure. Its surface activity, aggregation behavior, and wetting and spreading properties in water were studied by using instruments such as a surface tension meter, transmission electron microscope (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and contact angle tester. G2 can reduce the surface tension of water to 19.24 mN/m at a lower CMC (40.44 mg/L), and the foaming properties and hydrolysis stability of decynediol-ethoxylate-modified trisiloxane (G2) in water are significantly improved compared with allyl-polyoxyethylene-ether-modified trisiloxane (X5).

Abstract:New branched polyoxyethylene surfactants with different hydrophilic head groups have been synthesized from fatty acid derivatives as renewable resources. Through a systematic study of the surfactant properties of the obtained substances, ethoxylated monohydroxy stearic acid methyl ester (12-HMEEn) with a single hydrophilic head group, similar to commercial Guerbet alcohol polyoxyethylene ether, has been identified as the most promising candidate. It has excellent surfactant properties including good wettability, low foaming, and strong defoaming ability, indicating that it could be useful in industrial cleaning.

Abstract:This paper reports the design and facile synthesis of a novel series of "nano-diamond-ring-like" giant surfactants composed of a functionalized hydrophilic polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (such as dihydroxyl-functionalized DPOSS) or fullerene (such as carboxylic acid-functionalized AC(60)) head as the "diamond" and a hydrophobic, cyclic polystyrene (CPS) tail as the "ring". The synthetic route combines several steps of "click-type" reactions, demonstrating highly efficient and modular features. Starting from a specifically designed initiator, trifunctional linear polystyrene (LPS) precursors bearing vinyl, bromo, and alkyne groups were prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Upon the subsequent azidation of LPS, copper-catalyzed Huisgen [3 + 2] cycloaddition reaction was employed to afford vinyl-functionalized CPS ring in high yield and purity. The vinyl group was then subjected to the thiol-ene reaction to introduce an azide group onto the CPS, providing an azide-functionalized CPS (CPS-N-3) as a "clickable" cyclic building block to construct giant molecules. Various "nano-diamond-ring-like" giant surfactants decorating with different "diamonds", such as hydrophilic DPOSS or AC(60) molecular nanoparticles, can be readily synthesized via the modular sequential "click" approaches based on this CPS-N-3 building block. These giant surfactants with structural precision represent a novel member in the MNP-based giant surfactant family which might have distinct self-assembly behaviors compared to their linear analogues.

Abstract:Fluorocarbon surfactants are a key ingredient of aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) extinguishing agent. As is well known, the most widely used fluorocarbon surfactants are perfluorooctane sulfonates (PFOS) and theirs derivatives. However, PFOS has been restricted due to its drawbacks such as toxicity, bio-accumulation and resistance to biodegradation, etc. Fortunately, the toxicity and bio-accumulation can be neglected if the fluorocarbon chain contained in the surfactants is less than or equal to 4. Therefore, synthesis of novel short fluorocarbon chain (≤ C4) surfactants has become a very important way to solve this problem. A novel fluorocarbon surfactant based on perfluorobutyl had been synthesized and its chemical structure had been confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and 19F NMR measurements in this work. Since the fluorocarbon surfactant mixed with appropriate hydrocarbon surfactant can reduce its dosage and cutting production costs, the surface tension and the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of the synthesized fluorocarbon surfactant and its equimolar mixtures with CH3(CH2)5NaO3S had been studied. The results show that CMC and the surface tension at CMC (γCMC) of the pure surfactant were 21.68 mmol/L and 17.08 mN/m, while the minimum surface tension and CMC could reach to 16.58 mN/m and 7.72 mmol/L for the mixed system, respectively. In addition, the foamability, spreadability and extinguishing performance of the equimolar mixed system has also been investigated. The foam expansion and the 25% drainage time are 9.8 and 313 s, respectively, and the extinguishing times are less than 65 s while the burnback times are more than 14.50 min for all the hydrocarbon oils studied in this work, indicating a great application prospect in AFFF.

Abstract:Fluorinated surfactants, especially those with long fluorocarbon chains (CxF2x+1, x > 7) like perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), are used wildly in industrial and household fields. As research results have shown that such long fluorocarbon chain surfactants are seriously toxic, obviously persistent and highly bioaccumulative in the environment, it is an urgent requirement to develop novel alternatives of the long fluorocarbon chain surfactants. In this work, a series of novel nonionic fluorinated surfactants (FxCy-m) was synthesized by introducing an isophorone diisocyanate unit (as a spacer) between a short hydrophobic fluorocarbon chain (x ≤ 6) and a hydrophilic polyethylene glycol (PEG) chain with a facile two-step couple reaction using commercially available reagents. The chemical structures of FxCy-m were characterized by FT-IR and 1H NMR, and the relationships between length of hydrophilic/hydrophobic chains and surface activity of FxCy-m were systematically investigated by surface tension measurements. Among them, F6C2-400 with a longer fluorocarbon chain and a shorter PEG chain exhibits the highest surface activity, and its capability of reducing surface tension is almost equivalent to that of NaPFO (a derivative of PFOA). Meanwhile, F6C2-400 also has an excellent tolerance to salt and pH as well as an effective wettability. The facile preparation method and the clear structure-activity relationship in our research provide a valuable reference for development of nonionic surfactants with a short fluorocarbon chain.

Abstract:A pair of optical isomerism amphiphlic molecules L-C10HL(N-(4-decaoxygen-2-hydroxybenzene methylene) -L-leucine) and D-C10HL(N-(4-decaoxygen-2-hydroxybenzene methylene) -D-leucine) were synthesized. It was found that these two compounds showed superior surface activity and aggregation capability at higher pH value, which is so different from the traditional carboxylate surfactants. Furthermore, the interaction of L-C10HL and D-C10HL with cyclodextrin was also investigated by fluorescence excitation spectrum and circular dichroism spectrum.

Abstract:Butynediol ethoxylate-based siloxane surfactants have attracted considerable attention owing to their low foam content and strong wetting power. In this study, butynediol tetraethoxylate-based trisiloxane (TBEO-2) with a longer hydrophilic chain than that of butynediol diethoxytrisiloxane surfactant (TBEO-1) was designed and prepared by the hydrosilylation reaction, and the molecular structure of the product was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ( 1 H NMR and 13 C NMR and 29 Si NMR) and its surface and aggregation behaviors were investigated using a range of techniques. The results showed that TBEO-2 exhibits a high surface activity, strong aggregation capacity, low foam content, strong wettability, and good water solubility. Therefore, butynediol tetraethoxylate-based trisiloxane can be considered an ideal low-foam wetting agent for use in various applications.

Abstract:2-ethylhexanol, an oxo alcohol competitively priced on the global market, has not been explored intensively as a raw material for surfactants, due to its weak hydrophobic character. However, its sequenced propoxylation and ethoxylation yield an innovative amphiphilic structure, which exhibits unique interfacial activity. The paper presents the differences in the fractional composition of innovative surfactants derived from 2-EH alcohol prepared using alkali and dimetalcyanide catalysts, as well as examples of excellent adsorption and interfacial properties of the latter. The adsorption behavior of the synthesized compounds was explored using equilibrium surface tension (the du Noüy ring method), dynamic surface tension (the maximum gas bubble pressure method) and static/dynamic contact angle (the sessile drop method). The results from the adsorption tests conducted at the air/aqueous surfactant solution interface underwent comprehensive qualitative and quantitative analyses. Moreover, based on the experimentally obtained dynamic surface tension isotherms and the developed algorithm, the diffusion coefficients for these preparations were estimated, and it was shown that the diffusivity of these surfactants is higher compared to the commercial formulations. The study's outcomes in the testing of wettability indicate that new synthesized nonionic and anionic surfactants constitute an interesting group of amphiphiles with a wide application potential as effective wetting agents, especially in relation to the polymer surface. It should therefore be emphasized that the innovative surfactants described in this article, derived from 2-EH alcohol and prepared using dimetalcyanide catalysts, can successfully compete with conventional preparations such as ABS (Dodecylbenzenesulfonic Acid) or AES (Alcohol Ethoxysulphate) acid salts.

Abstract:In the manuscript, two sulphonate-crown ether surfactants (sodium (4′-dodecanoyldibenzo-18-crown-6)-4″(5″)-sulphonate, ammonium (4′-dodecanoyldibenzo-18-crown-6)-4″(5″)-sulphonate) were designed and synthesized by a two-step continuous method. The synthesized sulphonate-crown ether surfactants were characterized by IR, 1H NMR and elemental analysis. The physicochemical properties of the surfactants were studied by fluorescence, conductivity and dynamic light scattering techniques.

Abstract:Two sodium nonylphenol ethoxylate(10) sulfoitaconate ester surfactants, namely disodium nonylphenol ethoxylate(10) sulfoitaconate monoester (DNE(10)SIM) and sodium nonylphenol ethoxylate(10) sulfoitaconate diester (SNE(10)SID), were synthesized through the esterification and sulfonation reactions with nonylphenol ethoxylate(10) ester, itaconic acid and sodium sulfite as the raw materials. The chemical structures of the prepared surfactants were confirmed by FTIR and 1 H NMR. The surface tension of the synthesized surfactants was measured at 25 °C and the surface active properties were characterized. The DNE(10)SIM had better surface activity. The CMC was 1.77 × 10 −6 mol L −1 and γ CMC was 35.45 mN m −1 . The CMC and γ CMC for the SNE(10)SID were 5.42 × 10 −5 mol L −1 and 37.67 mN m −1 , respectively. Moreover, the emulsification power of SNE(10)SID was better.

Abstract:Silicone surfactants have garnered significant research attention owing to their superior properties, such as wettability, ductility, and permeability. Small-molecular silicone surfactants with simple molecular structures outperform polymeric silicone surfactants in terms of surface activity, emulsification, wetting, foaming, and other areas. Moreover, silicone surfactants with small molecules exhibit a diverse and rich molecular structure. This review discusses various synthetic routes for the synthesis of different classes of surfactants, including single-chain, "umbrella" structure, double chain, bolaform, Gemini, and stimulus-responsive surfactants. The fundamental surface/interface properties of the synthesized surfactants are also highlighted. Additionally, these surfactants have demonstrated enormous potential in agricultural synergism, drug delivery, mineral flotation, enhanced oil recovery, separation, and extraction, and foam fire-fighting.

Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Emulsification/Demulsification with a Gas Switchable Surfactant

Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulations were performed to study the reversible emulsification and demulsification processes of a hexadecane/water mixture by a CO2/N2-triggered surfactant named N′-dodecyl-N,N-dimethylacetamidinium bicarbonate(DDAB). Specifically, the simulations reproduced experimental observations, that is, the active form of the surfactant, DDA+, which can stabilize hexadecane/water emulsions in aqueous solution. Furthermore, when DDA+ surfactants were switched to DDA molecules, their inactive form, the surfactant-stabilized emulsion was spontaneously broken, and the oil phase was separated from bulk water. The potential of mean force (PMF) between emulsion and oil droplets showed that the repulsion effect among the DDA+ headgroups played an essential role in stabilizing emulsion. Besides, radial and spatial distribution functions were applied to investigate the hydration behavior of DDA and DDA+. The results demonstrated that the DDA+ headgroups could be fully hydrated with water molecules located around the three methyl groups in the headgroup. Once the headgroup was deprotonated, the headgroup changed into a nonplanar conjugation structure. Moreover, the hydrophilicity of DDA headgroups decreased significantly compared with DDA+. The reversible transformation of the hydrophilicity is the key for switchable surfactants that can be used as an emulsifier and a demulsifier simultaneously. The hydrophilicity of the surfactants was quantified by PMF between surfactants and water, which could be used to compare the hydrophilic difference between the inactive and active forms of the molecule and is expected to help design new switchable surfactants.

Abstract:In this paper, a series of tetrameric surfactants (4CnSAZs, n = 12, 14, 16) endowed with zwitterionic characteristic were synthesized by a simple and convenient method and their structures were characterized by FT-IR, 1H NMR and elemental analysis. Their physicochemical properties were studied using the Wilhelmy plate method, fluorescence spectra and dynamic light scattering technique. 4CnSAZs have higher surface activities and tend to adsorb at the air/water surface rather than self-assembling in aqueous solution. The thermodynamic parameters obtained from surface tension measurements show that both processes of adsorption and micellization of 4CnSAZs are spontaneous and that the micellization processes of 4CnSAZs are entropy-driven processes. Both adsorption and micellization of 4CnSAZs are inclined to occur with the increase of alkyl chain length or temperature. For 4C12SAZs, there are only small-size aggregates (micelles), while the large aggregates (vesicles) are observed at the alkyl length of 4CnSAZs of 14 or 16. This shows that the alkyl chain length for oligomeric surfactants has a greater sensitivity for aggregate growth. The aggregate morphologies obtained from the calculated values of critical packing parameter (p) for 4C14SAZs and 4C16SAZs can be supported by the DLS measurement results. The test results obtained by the separation-water-time method show that 4CnSAZs have good emulsification performance and that the prepared emulsions appear to exit in the form of multiple emulsions. In addition, 4CnSAZs have good antibacterial activities against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The present study reveals the unique behavior of a zwitterionic tetrameric surfactant and may give new insights into molecular design and synthesis of a high degree of surfactants with different structure characteristics for potential application in various industrial fields.

Abstract:This letter reports a sequential triple "click" chemistry method for the precise synthesis of functional polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS)-based multiheaded and multitailed giant surfactants. A vinyl POSS-based heterobifunctional building block possessing two alkyne groups of distinct reactivity was used as a robust and powerful "clickable" precursor for ready access to a variety of POSS-based shape amphiphiles with complex architectures. The synthetic approach involves sequentially performed strain-promoted azide-alkyne cycloaddition (SPAAC), copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC), and thiol-ene "click" coupling (TECC). Specifically, the first SPAAC reaction was found to be highly selective with no complications from the vinyl groups and terminal alkynes in the precursor. The method expands the toolbox of sequential "click" approaches and broadens the scope of synthetically available giant surfactants for further study on structure-property relationships.
