Abstract:The precision approach path indicator (PAPI) system is installed alongside a runway or at a heliport to provide accurate visual approach path information to pilots of landing aircraft, either day or night. The indicator sends the information through different color combinations. The international standards have very rigid requirements for the intensity distribution and the transition angle from red light to white light of the indicator. These two parameters are the main parameters to judge the accuracy of the indicator. We propose a new method to measure these two optical parameters, which can improve the accuracy of the signals and guarantee safe landing of the aircraft.

Abstract:The paper designs and manufactures a special measurement system for LED Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) units, which is controlled by computer and can sample the beam, transfer, analyze and process the data and get result automatically. Compared with the present method, the system has advantages with high efficiency, high precision and automation, which can guarantee the accuracy of the signals produced by PAPI.

Abstract:This paper, through studying of LED luminescence properties, presents a fast measurement method and device of LED sources spatial intensity distribution. This method is based on planar imaging, and it has significant merits of fast, easy operated, informative and real–time. The basic structure is LED luminous energy converges on image space through optical lens of a certain numerical aperture(NA). In image space, the energy on the defocused plane is collected with the imaging detector. Then, calculating energy distribution on object virtual plane from that on the image space defocused plane through imaging relationship. Thus, each point of the LED luminous intensity distribution on object virtual plane can be calculated. Tracepro simulation software is used to simulate energy distribution of the model, and the corresponding data analysis shows that planar imaging can accurately reflect the distribution of the LED light. This method has practical meanings for luminous flux measurement of some LEDs.

Abstract:Traditional PAPIs commonly use halogen lamps as their light sources, which have short lifetime. LEDs have much longer lifetime and thus can enhance the reliability of PAPIs. In this paper, a new design of a PAPI based on LED light sources is introduced. White and red LEDs are used to emit white and red beam separately. The white and red LEDs are separated into two cases. In each case there is a single lens in front of the LED, separately. The LEDs are placed exactly at the focal planes of the lens. The white LED is fixed below the optical axis to project the white light in the upper part, and the red LED is fixed oppositely. Baffles are used to form a sharp separation of the beam. Optical simulation is carried out to verify the design. The measurement results of the finally realized model show that it meets the requirements of the technical criterion.

Abstract:In this study, we present a novel design of precision light intensity modulation for LAPS measurement, aim to ameliorating the stability and precision of light source. A superluminescence LED (SLED) module, with a specialized designed SLED driver, is proposed as the light source. This design provides precision sine light intensity output. Furthermore, this design is immune from variation of ambient temperature. Contrast experiments were given between two conditions, with design of precision light intensity modulation and with traditional light source. From contrast experiments, it can be deduced that LAPS system with design of precision light intensity modulation has better linearity and accuracy than the latter one. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract:To eliminate measurement error caused by fluctuation, distortion and noise of light source output in a light-addressable potentiometric sensor (LAPS) system, LAPS system based on precise light intensity modulation is presented in this study. A superluminescence LED (SLED) module, with a home-made multi negative feedback SLED driver, is proposed as the precise light source in this system. A high-speed optical fiber spectrometer is introduced for on-line monitoring and long period intensity compensation. The precise light source provides light output to LAPS, and keeps light intensity on sensitive surface to meet sine rules with low distortion and low noise. Furthermore, it is immune from variation of ambient temperature. Detailed optical parameters of precise light source are presented and compared with conventional light source. H+ measurements for LAPS system based on precise light intensity modulation were given and compared with system with conventional light source. From contrast experiments, it can be deduced that LAPS system based on precise light intensity modulation has better linearity, higher accuracy and lower noise than LAPS system with conventional light source.

Abstract:The invention belongs to the technical field of optics, in particular to a light-emitting diode (LED) light source-based optical system of a precision approach path indicator. The optical system consists of a reflector-containing red-light LED array, a reflector-containing white-light LED array, a right-angle prism and an aspherical mirror, wherein the collimated red-light LED array and the collimated white-light LED array are arranged opposite to each other; the red-light LED array is above and the white-light LED array is below; the right-angle prism is positioned on a bisector plane of the red-light LED array and the white-light LED array; the aspherical mirror is arranged in front of the right-angle prism; and the right-angle edge of the right-angle prism is positioned on or near a focal plane of the aspherical mirror by adjusting the positions of the two LED arrays and the prism. The indicator using the optical system can transmit light beam signals which completely meet a relevant international standard so as to help a pilot to adjust a plane slope to land when approaches a path.

Abstract:The paper discusses practical aspects of LED measurements and problems about how to improve the measurement accuracy of LED spectral properties when using linear CCD sensor. Designed and implemented an instrument for LED spectral measurement based on linear CCD sensor. The CCD sensor has 2048 pixels and ultra-high sensitivity. The duration of one measurement is about 10 ms. For reducing the effect of CCD output noise, a software filtering method is introduced. After software calibration, the accuracy of color temperature is 40 K in the range of 1300 K to 25000 K, and accuracy of wavelength is 0.2 nm in the range of 360 nm to 760 nm. The accuracy of chromaticity coordinated (x, y) or (u, v) is better than 0.003.

Abstract:The efficiency and lumen output of light source for illumination system were analyzed based on Etendue, this analytical approach can predict light source collection efficiency. A new method for measuring the output intensity distribution of light source with elliptical reflector was put forward; the collection efficiency vs. Etendue curve was estimated with this technique. The Etendue was changed by moving the mobile aperture gradually and the intensity distributions were recorded by CCD camera in this measurement method. The method is very convenient and the experimental result matches well with the theoretical model.

Abstract:This paper introduces a new colorimetric measurement method for the transition width of the precision approach path indicator. The measurement system consists of a spectrometer, a fiber probe, a moving means and a ruler. The spectrometer is used to measure the chromaticity coordinates to distinguish the white and red light. The fiber probe is the input of the spectrometer. It is fixed to the moving means, which can move along with the upright rule. The precision approach path indicator certain distance away projects the light to the fiber probe. By moving the fiber probe crossing the transition sector up and down, the chromaticity coordinate of the light moves from the white area to the red area. The intermediate distance of the fiber probe is the width of the transition sector. Use the ruler to measure it and then calculate it to angle. With the measurement distance of 10 meter and the precision of the ruler 1 millimeter, the precision of the system can be 21 seconds of arc. Compared with the traditional measurement methods, the method introduced in this paper is more precise and it strictly accords with the ICAO standard Annex 14.

Abstract:The use of LEDs is increasing rapidly in both the commercial and residential markets. Nowadays, the main way to measure the luminous intensity distribution of a LED is by using a goniophotometer. This takes a long time which means its test efficiency is low. In this paper, we will propose a new way to measure the luminous intensity distribution of LEDs based on the Luneburg lens, which is a kind of dielectric lens with continuously changed index of refraction, with high efficiency and low cost. We also develop a complete test system and give the result of a simulation of the test system.

Abstract:Ab stract: -Light Emitting Diode (LED) is quite different from traditional light sources in many aspects. In this paper the practical aspects of LED's measurement and problems are discussed. An integrating sphere system is designed and implemented for LED measurement based on a multi<channel spectrometer. The principle and procedure of the measurement are presented, and then the measurement errors are analyzed. The spectrometer uses a Self<scanning Photodiode (SPD) Array device as the detector which has 256 pixels and ultra<high sensitivity. The system can fulfil fast and accurate measurement for LED's photometric and colorimetric quantities such as total luminous flux, Color Temperature, Color Rending Index (CRI) and color coordinate. This method can avoid the measurement errors by self<absorption effect and mismatch of V (λ).

Abstract:Traditional methods for measuring the total luminous flux can lead to errors when applied to light-emitting diodes (LEDs), since LEDs are quite different from traditional light sources in spectral and spatial characteristics. This paper proposes a novel spatial integration device for measuring the total luminous flux of LEDs without backward emission. It is named Spec-CPC, because it integrates a spectrometer and a Compound Parabolic Concentrator (CPC). The Spec-CPC method and traditional integrating sphere method are compared to the goniophotometer method by measuring specially selected LED samples. The results show that the Spec-CPC method can get better precision compared with the traditional integrating sphere method, and the performance of the Spec-CPC is greatly improved by spectral mismatch correction of the photometer.

Abstract:Appling related characteristics of photoresistance,we designed a kind of new LED light intensity distribution measuring device.Using this measuring device to measure a variety of LEDs,which parameters and light colors different are different,and based on matlab high times fitting,we simulated all the tested LEDs' luminous intensity distribution curve.The fitting is reliable.This measuring device is low-cost,small-sized,adaptability to the environment is strong,and the measurement process is simple.And thus it has a broad development prospects.

Abstract:Spatial integrated measurement using an integrating sphere is usually used for the luminous flux determination of light sources. Devices using an integrating sphere are bulky for use on a production assembly line. This paper proposes an alternative spatial integration method for accurately measuring the total luminous flux of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) having no backward emission. A compound parabolic concentrator is introduced to collect the light from an LED in conjunction with a detector which in turn measures the luminous flux. The study reported here combines both modeling and experiment to show the applicability of this novel method. The uncertainty in the measurements is then evaluated for the total luminous flux measurement from an LED.

Abstract:Errors are introduced when using traditional methods for measuring the total luminous flux of LEDs since an LED is quite different from traditional light sources in terms of physical size, flux level, spectrum and spatial distribution. This paper uses commercial lighting simulation software named Tracepro to simulate the self-absorption effect when using traditional integrating sphere methods to measure the total luminous flux of LEDs and then presents a modified method for the measurement. The LED under investigation or a specially designed narrow beam standard lamp is placed on the interior wall of the sphere in our method. The results show that the measurement method presented here can lead to better precision in the evaluation of the total luminous flux of LEDs.

Abstract:Light emitting diodes (LEDs) are very suitable candidates for using in airfield lighting due to the high efficiency, long lifetime and good monochromaticity. In this paper, an optical system is designed for LED taxiway centreline light, a combined modelling and experiment is carried out to show the designed system can meet the performance requirements of taxiway centreline light. This system has several advantages, compared with traditional light sources, such as structural reliability, long lifetime and low power consumption.

Abstract:A novel method is presented to measure LED's luminous flux due to its small size and narrow beam. A compound parabolic concentrator is used to collect the lights from a LED in conjunction with a detector which in turn measures the luminous flux. The feasibility is validated by simulating single ray with different angles and 3 types of LEDs with software simulation analysis. Furthermore, 7 LED samples are tested and the performance comparisons with goniophotometer are performed, and the results demonstrate that the method is significantly effective, and all measurement errors are less than 5%.
