Abstract:Objective To investigate the association of Na/K ATPase activity and ATP1A1 gene polymorphism with diabetic peripheral neuropathy(DPN) in type 2 diabetic patients. Methods The ATP1A1 gene polymorphism was detected by PCR-RFLP in 106 Chinese type 2 diabetic patients and 45 normal controls, and the activity of Na/K ATPase was measured by chemical method. Results The Na/K ATPase activity was significantly lower in diabetic peripheral neuropathy than in groups of control and the diabetic patients without peripheral neuropathy. Type 2 diabetic patients with peripheral neuropathy had a significantly different genotype distribution (P0.05) from diabetic patients without peripheral neuropathy. Na/K ATPase activity in allele A of type 2 diabetic patients was different from that in allele T of T2DM cases (P0.05). Conclusions ATP1A1 gene polymorphism is associated with Na/K ATPase activity and DPN in Chinese type 2 diabetic patients. The risk for accompanying DPN in allele A of type 2 diabetic patients is lower (P0.05) than in allele T cases.
