Abstract:The effects of oxidation-coupling modification on carbon fiber(CF)were investigated according surface morphology,charge characteristics,dispersion and the conductivity of paper.At the same time,the permeabili-ty and pore size distribution of carbon paper were discussed by the ratio of CF,CF length and the loading of car-bon black.The pre-oxidation treatment of KClO3-H2 SO4 produces an etching effect on the fiber surface,gener-ates potholes in crystal defect parts,and forms axial grooves.Coupling agent KH-550 attaches on the groove in particulate,the obvious increase of absolute value of zeta was observed,electrostatic repulsion between the CFs was strengthened,the dispersion of CFs was improved,and the electrical conductivity of the carbon paper had also been improved.The length of CF and the loading of carbon black can effectively adj ust the permeability and pore size distribution of carbon paper.

Abstract:The influences of the oxidative modification, coupling treatment and dispersing agent for carbon fiber dispersion and binding properties were investigated, and the relationships of different ratio of carbon fiber with the physical strength and electrical conductivity of the paper were analyzed. Meanwhile fiber surface morphology, zeta potential and absorbance slurry were tested. The result showed that: coupling modification significantly improved the dispersion performance of carbon fiber, superior than oxidative modification, the increase of the dispersion would enhance the conductivity of carbon fiber network, the effect of CPAM was best in four kinds of surface-active agent, and 30% content of carbon fiber achieved the "percolation threshold" of conductive material.

Abstract:Gas diffusion layer of carbon paper plays the role of supporting catalyst layer,stabilizing the electrode structure and offering the gas-water channel,which is the key component of PEMFC.But the key technology of high performance carbon paper is held by Europe,the United States and other countries,it restricts the development of PEMFC technology in China.The effect of the different ratio of carbon fiber on the paper strength and electrical conductivity were studied,the influence of dispersant on the carbon fiber dispersion was investigated by the absorbance method,resistance detection and deviation of tensile strength.The results showed that the ratio of carbon fiber had a great effect on strength and electrical conductivity of carbon paper,the carbon fiber ratio from 70% to 80% to prepare carbon paper was appropriate.PAAS and CPAM had the same trend on the effect of carbon fiber dispersion,CPAM was relatively better.The analysis results of three detection methods to present the dispersion uniformity were basically identical and credible.

Abstract:In order to predict the thermal insulation performance of coated carbon fiber fabric, a numerical heat transfer model under high temperature was established. The simulation results were validated by quartz lamp ablation experiment. The experimental values were in agreement with the numerical values, and the average relative error between them was 9.47%. Furthermore, the impact of structural parameters on the thermal insulation of coated carbon fiber fabrics, by using the numerical heat transfer model, was investigated. The results show that thermal insulation for the samples is in the order of plain < 2/1 twill < 3/3 twill < 5/3 stain, when using constant structure density and yarn fineness. Thermal insulation performance of the samples dramatically increases as yarn fineness goes from 3 to 12 K. Furthermore, when the structure density increases to more than 70 ends/10 cm, the thermal insulation property shows an increasing trend.

Abstract:Thermal and evacuating performance can be improved by means of slotting a number of one dimension slots on reflection shields of the multilayer insulation (MLI). The influence of slots on thermal radiation and gas conduction heat fluxes are theoretically studied. Based an the analysis and test, the optimum slot rate and length have been obtained. Experiments also show that the performance of MLI with slotted shield will be further improved if a combination of slotted shields with different slot rate can be used to fit the interstitial pressure distribution.

Abstract:The impact of different structural parameters on the thermal insulation of glass fiber fabrics, by using numerical simulation, was investigated. The structural parameters investigated were the weave structure, warp density and yarn fineness. A series of structure models were calculated under the same boundary and initial conditions, which combine thermal radiation, conduction and convection. The simulation results have been validated by experiments. The experimental results and the predictions from numerical simulations were in good agreement. The results show that thermal insulation for the samples is in the order plain < 2/1 twill < 2/2 twill < 2/3 twill < 3/3 twill fabric, when using constant structure density and yarn fineness. Increasing the warp density, from 110 to 160 ends/10 cm, leads to a significant decrease in heat transfer performance. When the warp density increases to more than 160 ends/10 cm, the thermal insulation property shows a decreasing trend with an increase in warp density. Furthermore, thermal insulation performance of the samples dramatically increases as yarn fineness goes from 129 to 280 tex, and then decreases for yarn fineness greater than 280 tex. This study will provide the theoretical basis for the thermal design and application of fibrous materials.

Abstract:The numerical simulation method has the advantages of rapidity,safety,environmental protection and low-cost.In order to study the influences of fabric structural density on the thermal insulation property of glass fiber fabric,fourpieces of 3/3 twill weave fabrics with different densities were weaved.The fabric heat transfer model was established,the influences of fabric structural density on the thermal insulation property of glass fiber fabric were investigated based on the use of Ansys software and then experiments have been carried out to verify the effectiveness of the simulation results.The numerical simulation values showed good agreement with the experimental data of the temperature in different density fabric changes over time.Keeping the weft density being constant,with warp density increased from 110 ends/10 cm to 160 ends/10 cm,the temperature on the surface of the fabric roseslowly,it indicated that the heat insulation had become more effective.The temperature of the fabric rose the most slowly and this fabric showed the best thermal insulation property at the warp density of 160 ends/10 cm.As the warp density increased to 180 ends/10 cm,the temperature of the fabric rose rapidly and the heat insulation effect decreased.Numerical simulation can provide a quick way to find the threshold value of structural density of fabric.It also provides an important theoretical basis for design,optimization and application of the glass fiber fabric in the field of thermal protection.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of structural parameters of fabric on thermal insulation properties of the coated fabric. Design/methodology/approach The authors established a numerical model for the ablation of silicone resin-coated fabric under high heat flow, and the simulation results have been validated by quartz lamp ablation experiment. The model was used to investigate the effects of structural parameters of glass fiber fabrics on the heat transfer process of the coated fabric. Findings The numerical values were in agreement with the experimental values. The thermal insulation of the coated glass fiber fabric was better than coated carbon fabric. Thermal insulation performance of the coated glass fiber fabrics was in order plain < 2/1 twill < 3/3 twill < 5/3 stain fabric. Increasing the warp density, from 100 to 180 ends/10 cm, the temperature of the back surface of the coated glass fiber fabric was reduced from 601°C to 553°C. Thermal insulation performance dramatically increased as yarn fineness went from 129 to 280 tex, and the temperature difference was 63°C. Research limitations/implications In the ablation process, to simplify the calculation, the combustion reaction of silicone resin was ignored, which can be added in the future research. Originality/value This paper provides the ablation model of the silicon-coated fabric based on the 3D geometry model to explore the influence of the structural parameters of coated glass fiber fabric on its thermal protection performance.

Abstract:Flame-retardant multilayer insulation materials act as effective thermal insulation blankets of cryogenic containers that store flammable and explosive cryogenic liquids. This study used standard static liquid nitrogen boil-off calorimetry to test the insulation performance of eight groups of flame-retardant multilayer insulation materials with different wrapping parameters. The effects of four factors, namely the layer density, seaming process, number of reflector layer, and variable-density multilayer insulation arrangement, on the insulation performance were analysed. Three layer densities were considered: 4.47, 3.08, and 2.50 layers/mm. Two types of seaming processes were discussed: the overlapped and fold-over seaming processes. Three numbers of reflector layers were considered: 60, 70, and 80. Two variable-density multilayer insulation arrangements with similar thicknesses were discussed: 10-10-40 and 20-20-20 layers of reflectors allocated for low-, medium- and high-density segments. The conclusions are as follows: Decreasing the layer density enhances the performance of multilayer insulation; Using the fold-over seaming process results in less heat flux and lower apparent thermal conductivity; An increase in the number of reflector layers weakens radiative heat transfer, resulting in better thermal insulation; Furthermore, for a given wrapping thickness, reducing the number of reflectors appropriately in low- and medium-density segments improves the insulation performance; Optimizing and controlling the layer density of each density segment are also essential for variable-density multilayer insulation effects. This study provides supporting theories and reference data for practical engineering applications.

Abstract:A steady state liquid nitrogen boil-off rate measurement apparatus was developed to investigate the temperature distribution and thermal insulation performance of the multilayers configured with large layer density at the cold end while small layer density at the warm end.The temperature decreasing behavior of various positions along the depth of the multilayer material was studied after the test chamber was filled with liquid nitrogen.Furthermore,a contrast between the experimental steady state temperature profile and the analytical profile was carried out to check the reasonable of layer by layer model.
Study on characteristics of moisture diffusion in multi-layer paper insulation

Abstract:In this paper, a mathematical model was set based on mass diffusion laws to simulate the moisture diffusion process in paper insulation. Besides, we designed 3 kinds of paper models with different paper layers and experimentally investigated the moisture distribution in the direction of thickness of paper and its variation with time. Each layer of paper insulation was sampled in enclosed spaces and the corresponding moisture content was detected by Karl Fischer titration. It was found that the migration speed had positive correlations with the gradient of local moisture content, which was in accordance with the law introduced in the model. Furthermore, the influence of temperature on moisture distribution and the diffusion speed were experimentally studied. The experimental data was discretized and fitted into the discretion model. The characteristic coefficients in the model were obtained by solving the discrete model. The relations between diffusion coefficients and temperature with moisture content were acquired. Finally, relations between the number of paper layers and diffusion speed were investigated on designed models through experiments. It was indicated that the differences in relevant coefficients among different models were obvious. The diffusion speed of moisture decreased with increasing number of paper layers. We considered that the layer effect was aroused by micro oil gap between paper layers.

Abstract:enhanced materials (e.g., Kevlar fiber, high-strength polyethylene) in this study. The thermal properties of multilayer perforated insulation and its associated materials were measured. An analysis model for the thermal performance of the multilayer perforated insulation was developed by energy balance method, and a contact coefficient was introduced to modify the model, due to the separation caused by the deflation of the multilayer perforated insulation between the reflective screens and the mesh solid spacers. The results calculated from the modified model coincide well with the experimental data. The effective thermal conductivities of the space debris protection enhanced multilayer perforated insulation by inserting Kevlar fabric and high-strength polyethylene were investigated by the modified model. The analysis results show that the effective thermal conductivities are greatly affected by the layers of the strength-enhanced material in that they increase linearly with the layers but are influenced little by the inserted position. However, the effective emissivities of the multilayer perforated insulation are affected little by the types, positions, and layers of the inserted reinforcing materials.

Abstract:Based on its constituting parallel micro-capillaries, the sound absorption behavior of multi-layer plastic micro-capillary film (MCF) structure has been investigated. The effects of micro-capillary diameter, perforation rate and perforation diameter on the sound absorption performance of the multi-layer MCF structures were studied using the standing wave tube method. It was demonstrated that the multi-layer MCFs had good sound absorption especially at low frequencies around the resonant frequency. The mechanical property of the MCF samples was measured by a strength tester and results demonstrated this sound absorption structures had stable mechanical behavior. Compared to two traditional sound absorption materials (perforated panel and porous material), the sound absorption coefficients of the MCF samples are comparable and competitive to them. Therefore the novel multi-layer MCFs, which are easy-to-manufacture and cost-effective, have promising applications in the field of sound absorption.

Abstract:Reducing building energy consumption has become an important measure to achieve sustainable development in urban construction worldwide, and installing insulation materials on building envelopes has been proven to be an effective means of reducing building energy consumption. This study developed a high toughness ultra-light foam insulation material (FIM) by combining polypropylene (PP) fiber, expanded polystyrene (EPS) lightweight aggregates, and alkali-activated multiple cementitious materials. Its purpose was to reduce building energy consumption while promoting the recycling of solid waste. The effects of PP fiber length and content on the dry density, flexural strength, compressive strength, thermal conductivity, and volumetric water absorption of FIM were studied, and the improvement mechanism of PP fiber was revealed. Scanning electron microscopy was used to observe the microscopic morphology of FIM. It was exciting to note that all developed FIM had a dry density of less than 150 kg/m 3 , and a minimum thermal conductivity of only 0.0423 W/(m·K). PP fiber with a length of 9 mm played a key role in improving the flexural performance of FIM, which increased by 21.05% compared to the control group. PP fiber with a length of 3 mm showed the most significant improvement in the thermal conductivity of FIM, which was 13.5% lower than the control group. A response surface methodology (RSM) was used to propose a prediction model for five performance indicators of FIM, with PP fiber length and content as variables. The results showed a high correlation between the predicted value and test value, which verifies the validity of the prediction models. The proposed models can provide important reference basis for mix proportion design.

Abstract:High temperature thermal insulation performance plays a crucial role in the application of thermal contact resistance precision measurement to reduce systematic heat loss and ensure 1D axial heat flow. In this paper, a compound insulation system composed of carbon fibrous materials and multilayer insulation (CFMLI) with non-interlayer-contact space was proposed in terms of high temperature sustainability, low thermal conductivity and thermal performance stability. An experimental set-up was designed and fabricated to measure the temperature distribution and the effective thermal conductivity of CFMLI as a function of temperature (800 K-1325 K). The experimental results showed that the temperature gradually decreases from inner to external radius of CFMLI, and a temperature jump of 40 K-80 K appears at the interface between two segments under vacuum conditions. It also reveals that the thermal performance of CFMLI is strongly dependent on the gas pressure and the number of reflective layers, while it is hardly affected by the filling materials when the temperature is above 1050 K. Meanwhile, the effective thermal conductivity of CFMLI varies around 0.2 W/m/K for two levels of pressure (10(-4) Pa and 0.1 MPa), and it decreases by 14.7% when the number of reflective layers increases from 6 to 21 at 1325 K. Additionally, a theoretical model with thermal resistance network was developed for heat transfer analysis of CFMLI. The model could predict the external temperature of CFMLI with high accuracy so that the difference between the theoretical results and experimental data was less than 2.61%.

Abstract:Winter outdoor clothing is aimed at protecting human being against harsh environmental conditions, especially against cold. Thermal insulating properties of a textile material plays significant role in protective clothing. Thermal protective clothing usually is a multilayer construction composed of three layers -Base layer, Insulating material, Outer layer. The previously available jacket insulating layer is always filled with down feather which cause harm to the wearer. This study concentrates on replacing the middle layer with ecofriendly natural Fiber-Kapok. Thickness, thermal conductivity, Air permeability, and wickability properties of fiber and fabric is determined. The layers are been bonded with Needle punching and thermal bonding technique. The effect of Multilayer clothing in cold weather is been tested and analyzed using different proportions of natural ecofriendly-kapok fiber.

Abstract:The continuous increase in building energy consumption, and the increasing types and quantities of solid waste have seriously hindered the rapid development of social economy. Therefore, reducing building energy consumption while realizing the recycling of waste has become the mainstream topic of environmental protection construction in the new era. An alkali-activated ultra-light foamed insulation material (AFIM) for building walls was prepared using EPS particles as lightweight aggregates. The effects of EPS dosage, particle size, and gradation on the compressive strength , dry density, thermal conductivity , and volumetric water absorption of AFIM were studied. The results showed that while ensuring good mechanical properties of AFIM, EPS particles can significantly reduce the dry density, thermal conductivity, and volumetric water absorption of AFIM. Excitingly, the optimal thermal conductivity and dry density of AFIM were 0.0408 W/(m·K) and 127.03 kg/m 3 , respectively. The microscopic morphology results showed that there was good compatibility between EPS particles and AFIM slurry, and the interface transition zone (ITZ) between them was dense and without obvious cracks. In addition, the feasibility of AFIM was evaluated from four aspects: performance, energy consumption, carbon emissions , and life cycle cost (LCC). It was encouraged that the performance of AFIM was comparable to that of traditional insulation materials, and showed significant advantages in energy conservation, emission reduction and economic benefits compared to traditional insulatin materials.

Abstract:A new type of multilayer thermal insulation structure used for cryogenic propellants tank was discussed.The structure was optimum configured according to the radiation heat transfer shield character of the layers along radial direction,mass of insulation material and structure intensity.The optimization consists of analyzing rhythm of multilayer insulations performance with variation of layer density,finding out optimized layer density in certain conditions and studying the relation between the optimized layer density distribution and the parameters of the insulation system.

Abstract:Textile Research Journal, Ahead of Print. To effectively overcome the shortcomings of common polyurethane (PU) insulation materials in terms of flame retardancy, mechanical properties, and sound absorption, a new multi-functional insulation material needs to be developed. Here, simple materials such as PU and silica aerogel (SA) combined with a special three-dimensional spacer fabric were used to design an innovative SA/PU/spacer fabric (SPS) ternary composite. It integrates a "hierarchically porous" and "filled-microperforated plate" structure. The superior structure design endows the new type of composite with a remarkable performance while maintaining low density (0.198 g/cm3). Specifically, the SPS composite was difficult to ignite by alcohol lamps compared with PU and SA/PU, and its thermal conductivity and compression modulus can reach 0.0392 W/(m·k) and 1.5 MPa, respectively. Moreover, the average absorption coefficient of the SPS composite (7.5 mm thickness) is 0.62, and its noise reduction coefficient per unit thickness (0.37) exceeds most reported sound absorption materials. From these results, the SPS composite provides a convenient and low-cost method to improve the overall performance of traditional thermal insulation material, which is of great significance in the fields of construction and transportation.

Abstract:This paper reports on an experimental investigation on the temperature and water content distribution within the porous fibrous battings sandwiched by an inner and outer layer of thin covering fabrics using a novel sweating, guarded hot plate. Experimental results for four combinations out of two types fibrous battings (one hydrophobic and non-hygroscopic polyester and the other hydrophilic and hygroscopic viscose) and two types of covering fabrics (one highly permeable nylon fabric and the other less permeable laminated fabric) have been obtained. It was found that most of the changes in temperature distribution took place within 1/2 h of the tests and moisture absorption by the hygroscopic fibers affects the temperature distribution. The water content accumulates with time and higher water content was found at the outer regions than that at the inner regions of the battings. The accumulation and distribution of water content is a combined result of moisture absorption, condensation and liquid water movement. Further theoretical modeling based on the reported experimental results is needed in order to better understand the mechanism.
