Abstract:A 25kg pressurized induction furnace with maximum nitrogen pressure 6MPa was invented to manufacture high nitrogen stainless steels. The suitable process was explored, and the analysis of radiography and macrosegregation of nitrogen of high nitrogen steel ingot was performed. The mechanical properties and inclusions of the forging ingot were also investigated. The suitable solidification nitrogen pressure can effectively prevent the formation of nitrogen porosity and macrosegregation of nitrogen. It is very important to control the purity of the nitrogen gas to a higher level for avoiding the manganese loss and decreasing oxygen content in the steel during the nitrogen gas pressurized melting process. The sound and compact macrostructure high nitrogen austenitic stainless steel with nitrogen content above 1.0 wt % has been manufactured by the pressurized induction melting method. There are mainly nonmetallic inclusions with the size less than 5 mu m in the HNS-A ingot. The HNS-A exhibits excellent mechanical properties.
Discussing mechanisms of nitrogen removal during ferritic stainless steelmaking

Abstract:The role of nitrogen in ferrite stainless steel, especially the effect of nitrogen on toughness, intergranular corrosion and processability of ferrite stainless steel was analyzed. The efficiency of nitrogen removal under the condition of vacuum, dilution, plasma and powder injection was explained. At the same time, the mechanism of nitrogen removal under above conditions was discussed in the view of thermodynamics and kinetics. Then during the ultra-pure ferrite stainless steelmaking, it is suggested that improving decarburization kinetic in low carbon content is advantageous for nitrogen removal in spite of different refining devices such as VOD, SS-VOD, VOD-PB or VCR, which was supposed to be instructive for producing ultra-pure ferrite stainless steel.
Research Progress of Gas Soft-nitriding Technology

Abstract:Gas soft-nitriding is low-temperature nitrocarburising which is mainly based on nitriding.While the nitrogen atoms infiltrate into the steel,a small number of carbon atoms infiltrate as well to form some extremely small carbides,which act as the medium for nitriding.As the processing temperature is low and the time is short,so the deformation of the steel would become small,brittle could also be reduced.The development of gas soft nitriding,which could improve the surface hardness,inhibit the surface brittle and possess the properity of high-temperature and short-time,was reviewed;The mechanism and reasearch of the performance of gas soft-nitrided layer were described from five aspects respectively as followes: rare-earth catalyzing infiltration,multicomponent co-cementation,cyclic nitriding,controlled atmosphere nitriding and austenitic soft-nitriding.The influences of nano-crystallization by surface strengthens pressure shot penning on gas soft-nitriding of 35 steel were introduced;Development perspectives of the surface nanocrystallization for soft nitriding process were forecasted.

Abstract:In order to optimize the intrinsic gettering (IG) process based on the rapid thermal processing (RTP) for nitrogen-doped Czochralski (NCZ) silicon wafer, the effects of RTP and the following nucleation anneal on oxygen precipitation in NCZ silicon and conventional CZ silicon wafers have been comparatively investigated. It was found that, for NCZ silicon, the RTP at enough high temperature (e.g., 1250 degrees C) was necessary for generation of high density of bulk microdefects (BMDs) in the subsequent anneals despite the nitrogen enhancement effect on oxygen precipitation. With enough high concentration of vacancies introduced by the RTP at 1250 degrees C, for the conventional CZ silicon wafer, the vacancy enhancement effect on the nucleation of oxygen precipitates was most significant at 800 degrees C; while for NCZ silicon wafer, the vacancies and nitrogen atoms coacted most remarkably to nucleate the oxygen precipitates during the ramping anneal from 800 to 1000 degrees C. It was further found that the doped nitrogen is superior to the vacancy to enhance the nucleation of oxygen precipitates at temperatures of 900-1000 degrees C. Moreover, in order to maximize the density of BMDs, the RTP-based IG process for NCZ silicon wafer should be different from that for the conventional CZ silicon wafer. Abstract:This paper, based on the Second Lakhtin Memorial Lecture, gives an overview of the developments in the process control of gas nitriding and describes the current status of nitriding of non-ferrous alloys. Control of the nitriding process involves both thermodynamic and kinetic factors. On this basis, Lakhtin developed concepts that provide the foundations for controlled gas nitriding processes. The progress in the development of sensors in the last few years offers new possibilities for gas nitriding and nitrocarburising process control. The control of the reaction gas composition leads to higher quality assurance. Adjusting defined nitriding and oxidation potentials enables surface activation of components which allows, for example, a uniform nitriding of stainless steels at temperatures of 300°C. There are significant differences between the nitriding behaviour of aluminium, titanium, and iron alloys owing to the different solubilities of nitrogen in the base metal, the differences between the nitriding and solidus temperatures, and the different oxygen affinities of the base metals. Considerable progress has been made in the field of plasma nitriding of aluminium alloys in recent years. An essential part of this is the evidence that commercial plants can be used for the plasma nitriding of aluminium alloys. New possibilities for the production of load specific nitrided layers on titanium alloys allow the nitriding process to be intensified and combined with solution treatment and subsequent aging.

Abstract:Highlights • Lithium cycle was proposed as upfront nitrogen removal technology from natural gas • Nitridation at 60°C achieved 80% lithium conversion and N 2 uptake of 19 mmol/g • Lithium-based adsorption is promising for reducing nitrogen in natural gas to below 2%. • Lithium nitride hydrolysis at 80°C achieved promising ammonia production. • The proposed lithium cycle could significantly reduce energy costs in LNG production. This research work aims to investigate the feasibility of lithium cycle (Li-Cy) as an upfront removal technology (UNR) to remove nitrogen (N 2 ) from the natural gas (NG). Nitridation experiments conducted at 60, 80 and 100 o C showed the middle temperature to be the optimal condition for operation, yielding lithium conversion and nitrogen uptake rate of up to 80% and 19 mmol/g, respectively, after 30 minutes of moisture treatment and 2 hours of reaction time (F: 0.1 L/min, P: 1 atm). Meanwhile, hydrolysis trials proved using steam as a water source to react with lithium nitride (Li 3 N) quickly and convert 98% solid particles into lithium hydroxide (LiOH) after 2 hours of reaction time. Kinetic model fitting led to an areic reactivities of growth of approximately 0.202 and 125 mol.m -2 .min for the nitridation and hydrolysis reactions, respectively. It was demonstrably proven that high nitrogen uptake rates could be achieved in a practical experimental setting. The consumed sorbent's regeneration is not only possible but also potentially economically attractive. This could be a crucial step in commercialization of UNR technologies in baseload LNG plants in Qatar.

Abstract:A novel rapid nitridation process has been developed to synthesize a series of ordered mesoporous transition metal nitrides (TMNs) from their corresponding mesostructured metal oxides (TMOs). The TMOs in turn are prepared using mesoporous silica SBA-15, which is used as the hard template. The ordered mesoporous structures contribute to the interaction between ammonia and metal oxide precursors, which effectively shorten the nitridation time. Moreover, the rapid nitridation process saves time while also suppressing the closure and collapse of the mesoporous structures. To demonstrate the generic capability of the method: ordered mesoporous binary and ternary TMNs (CoN, WN, CrN and Ni3FeN) have been successfully synthesized within 30 min. As a practical application of the materials synthesized thus, mesoporous ternary nitride Ni3FeN is shown to exhibit outstanding oxygen evolution performance with very low overpotential (279 mV) at 10 mA cm−2 geometric current density. The observed performance is a superior performance to the Ir/C benchmark catalyst. The rapid, high yield method demonstrated implications for the production of nitrides for a wide range of applications in catalysis and beyond.

Abstract:A newt process was introduced which was applied for gasification purification onto fixed-bed to de-sulfur in the liquefied gas without using alkali in the refinery plant.This new process could reduce the total sulfur content to below 10-6 mg/m3,so that the product gas corrosion standard was eligible.The industry plant has been running pretty well for almost one year,which indicates that this process in mature and reliable.

Abstract:The melt of silicon, hindering nitridation for its agglomeration, should be avoided in direct nitridation of silicon to synthesize silicon nitride powders, although liquid phase facilitates nitridation. Therefore, we proposed a method to nitride molten silicon without agglomeration. Thermogravimetric and in‐situ Raman studies on the nitridation process of molten silicon were performed. The as‐prepared silicon nitride samples were found to be micron clusters composed of sub‐micron grains with high α‐Si3N4 content. The nitridation of molten silicon at 1500°C was completed after 500 s and 109 times faster than the nitridation of solid silicon at 1350°C. β‐Si3N4 is produced dominantly by α–β phase transition. Less nitridation time and low temperature can decrease the β‐Si3N4 content. The rapid nitridation was owning to core‐shell structure Si@Si3N4, which was formed after the initial nitridation of silicon particles and hindered the agglomeration of molten silicon. Abstract:Partial nitrification (PN) is a prerequisite step for the short-cut nitrogen removal process, which is crucial to provide stable nitrite accumulation for subsequent units. The present study innovatively proposed a new strategy for the rapid establishment of PN by adopting short-term anoxic starvation combined with high free ammonia inhibition. The sludge obtained from the secondary sedimentation tank of a municipal wastewater treatment plant was starved for 7 days under anoxic conditions, and then wastewater with high ammonia nitrogen (400 mg L −1 ) was introduced. Within 17 days, stable nitrite accumulation was achieved in the sequencing batch reactor, and the nitrite accumulation rate reached more than 95.0%. The activity of ammonia monooxygenase enzyme increased from 0.0364 ± 0.0074 to 0.1275 ± 0.0021 μg NO 2 − -N·mg −1 protein min −1 , while that of hydroxylamine oxidoreductase enzyme increased from 1.5350 ± 0.0208 to 6.3852 ± 0.0400 EU g −1 SS. The relative abundance of Nitrosomonas increased from 0.10% to 25.90%, while that of Nitrospira consistently remained below 0.04%. And the relative abundance of short-cut denitrifying bacteria, including Truepera , OLB8 , and OLB13 all increased. The results proved that the short-term anoxic starvation combined with high free ammonia inhibition was an effective strategy for rapid establishment of PN.

Abstract:Nitriding treatments have been successfully applied to austenitic stainless steels to improve their hardness and tribological properties. However, at temperatures above 450 °C, conventional plasma nitriding processes decrease the corrosion resistance due to the formation of CrN phases within the modified layer. In this work, AISI 304 austenitic stainless steels were efficiently treated by rapid plasma nitriding at a high temperature of 530 °C in a hollow cathode discharge. The enhanced ionization obtained in the hollow cathode configuration provided a high current density and, consequently, a high temperature could be attained in a short time. The nitrided layers were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results indicated that the dual-layer structure of the nitrided layer consists of a high-N face-centered cubic structure with a free CrN precipitate outer (top) layer and a nitrogen-expanded austenite S-phase bottom layer. The rapid nitriding-assisted hollow cathode discharge technique permits the use of high temperatures, as high as 530 °C, without promoting degradation in the corrosion resistance of stainless steel.

Abstract:The preparation technology of Mg3N2 by directly nitride at ammonia atmosphereis is studied in thispaper.And the influence of preparation technology parameters such as different atmosphere、heating temperature、two-step heating on the nitriding of Mg powders is analyzed with X-ray diffraction.The results show that:at 800℃,Mg3N2 powder is easier to be prepared by reacting Mg with than with ammonia flow nitrogen;the optimal preparation condition for Mg3N2 by the reaction of Mg powders in the flow of ammonia is to keep annonia at 600℃ for 1 h,then increase temporatare to 800℃ and keep it for 1 h.High-purity magnesium nitride powders are prepated by this way.This method has the advantage over traditional technology in simply equipments,low cost and high quality.

Abstract:Utilization of plasma-driven direct nitrogen oxidation for the production of nitrates presents a promising strategy for realizing artificial nitrogen fixation while minimizing carbon emissions. However, the conventional plasma-driven synthesis method employing air as the feed gas exhibits unsatisfactory nitrogen conversion efficiency due to insufficient oxygen. In this study, we introduced carbon dioxide as an additional source of oxygen and mixed it with air, utilizing electrochemically synthesized copper nanoparticles as a catalyst, which significantly improved the efficiency of plasma-driven nitrogen oxidation. The introduction of carbon dioxide not only provides sufficient O* for the nitrogen oxidation process, but also facilitates the high-value conversion of carbon dioxide with 99.99% selectivity in the synthesis of carbon monoxide. Additionally, we also designed a cyclic reaction device to further enhance the nitrogen oxidation efficiency. As a result, this plasma-driven cycle reaction system achieved a maximum nitrogen conversion rate of up to 11.4%.

Abstract:The direct oxidation of nitrogen is a potential pathway to achieving the zero-carbon-emission synthesis of nitric acid or nitrate, because it does not involve ammonia synthesis and additional ammonia oxidation processes. However, the slow kinetics of nitrogen oxidation and the difficult selective control of oxidation products hinder the development of this process. In this study, a plasma-driven gas-liquid relay reaction system was developed to overcome these limitations. A typical feature of this reaction system is that it can efficiently generate NO x under plasma exposure; moreover, the specific anions in the absorption solution can be oxidized to strong oxidants capable of relay oxidation of low-valence nitrogen oxides. This feature allows for the deep oxidation of nitrogen, thus enabling the oxidation products of nitrogen to exist in high-valence states in the absorption solution. For experimental verification, we achieved the 100% selective synthesis of nitrate under plasma exposure, with air as the supply gas and a sodium sulfate solution as the absorption solution.

Abstract:For any gas or LNG plant, higher levels of nitrogen within your feed gas mean lower profitable volumes or additional capital investment. Nitrogen Removal Units (NRU) can be expensive to build and difficult to operate. The challenges facing the gas industry are highlighted by the Gas Technology Institute (GTI, USA) in their estimates that 11% of current daily gas production and 16% of all known gas reserves in the USA contain some nitrogen.Recent gas reservoir discoveries around the world were also found to contain significant levels of nitrogen up to the 15% range. Also, some current production techniques for maintaining crude recovery from a reservoir utilize the injection of nitrogen as enhanced oil recovery (EOR) method. Gradually and eventually, the equilibrium nitrogen dissolved in the crude will come to the surface as associated gas when the nitrogen breaks through.Gas companies typically set maximum concentration limits on nitrogen content in the pipeline between 4.0 and 7.0 percent depending on the local product specifications. Dielectric-Boosted Gliding Arc Discharge for N2 Fixation into NOx

Abstract:Plasma nitrogen fixation technology is of great significance in solving the problem of nitrogen fertilizer resource shortage, saving energy and reducing carbon emission, promoting sustainable development of agriculture and promoting resource recycling. To enhance the efficiency and treatment capacity of the two-dimensional, blade-type gliding arc nitrogen fixation reaction, a dielectric-boosted gliding arc discharge reactor with a 50-mm-diameter quartz dielectric (DBGAD Φ 50 ) was used to conduct N 2 fixation into NO x . The impact of reactor parameters and gas parameters on the nitrogen fixation reaction was systematically investigated in this study. The findings revealed that the DBGAD Φ 50 significantly improved the nitrogen fixation effect. At a specific input energy of 2.7 kJ/L, the concentration of NO x generated by the dielectric-boosted gliding arc air discharge was 1.12 times that of the conventional gliding arc discharge (GAD). By utilizing the DBGAD Φ 50 reactor, the energy efficiency of 6.83 g/kW h was achieved at a gas flow rate of 5.6 L/min. Appropriately increasing O 2 concentration favors the production of NO x . In the DBGAD Φ 50 , the NO x concentration was 1.33 times higher than that in the air atmosphere when the added O 2 volume fraction reached 30%. Performance can be further enhanced by adding TiO 2 catalyst particles to the surface of the quartz dielectric to form a catalyst layer approximately 5 mm thick. At an O 2 concentration of 30%, the DBGAD Φ 50 reactor loaded with TiO 2 increased NO x concentration by 26% and energy efficiency by 49%, respectively, resulting in an efficiency of 14.9 g/kW h compared to the case without catalyst.

Abstract:This study investigated the rapid start-up of partial nitrification through different inhibitor addition, including hydroxylamine (NH2OH), potassium chlorate (KClO3), and formic acid (HCOOH). Then, the performances of the three inhibitors on the rapid recovery of partial nitrification once increasing the influent ammonium sharply were also compared. Finally, real-time aeration control strategy was adopted to maintain partial nitrification during a period. In the present work, batch experiments were used to confirm the optimum dosage of each inhibitor in a similar adding range first. The results showed that nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) were more vulnerable to NH2OH and KClO3 than HCOOH. Second, the rapid start-up of partial nitrification in a sequencing batch reactor was evaluated. It finished in 22 days without any inhibitor. However, only 12 days were needed when adding 0.15 mM NH2OH. It used 14 days when adding 0.5 mM KClO3 and 17 days under 0.5 mM HCOOH addition, respectively. The partial nitrification, which was destroyed by the high influent ammonium, was easily and rapidly recovered using the inhibitors. The nitrite accumulation rate was still more than 80% using the real-time aeration control strategy when ceasing the inhibitor addition. Furthermore, high-throughput sequencing analysis revealed that the main genera of NOB, Nitrospira, was suppressed by the three inhibitors; however, a difference in bacterial community structure was found due to the different influence mechanisms. Overall, inhibitor addition and real-time aeration control is an excellent strategy for establishing, recovering, and maintaining effective partial nitrification.

Abstract:A method of producing nitrogen-alloyed steel is considered. The nitrogen alloying technologies based on the use of nitrided ferromanganese and nitrogen purge gas are analyzed and compared to choose the most effective one for the TAGMET conditions. To produce SA 20A steel with a regulated nitrogen content (100–300 ppm), it is proposed to purge metal with nitrogen and argon during treatment in a ladle furnace and during and after degassing. Proprietary software controlling the purging of steel with nitrogen and argon from the control panel of the ladle furnace and the vacuum degassing unit has been developed. This ensured effective control of the nitriding process and achievement of the required nitrogen content in steel. Changing over from alloying with nitrided ferromanganese to purging with nitrogen gas made it possible to eliminate the pyroelectric effect and to reduce the secondary oxidation and contamination of steel with non-metallic inclusions.

Multiphase Nitrosation Based on N2O3 Intermediate and Process Intensification in a Microflow Reactor

Abstract:Nitrosation of alcohols with nitrous acid is widely used to prepare alkyl nitrites, but the reaction mechanism and formation pathways of gaseous side products remain unclear. Here, we propose a nitrosation mechanism based on a highly reactive intermediate, dinitrogen trioxide (N2O3). The N2O3-based mechanism shows a lower energy barrier than the previously reported acid-catalyzed and nitrosyl cation mechanism. Furthermore, a microfluidic platform was established to investigate the gas-liquid-liquid reaction system and characterize the gas holdup of the multiphase reaction system. The results suggest that the reaction rate and selectivity primarily depend on the interfacial mass transfer of N2O3 between the aqueous-organic and gaseous-organic phases. A tubular microreactor was employed to intensify the nitrosation process of isopropanol. In contrast to the batch process operated by adding reactants dropwise in several hours, the product yield of 95 % can be achieved in a residence time of only 10 s in the microflow reactor.

Abstract:The effect of ion nitriding and nitriding in a melamine-based powder mixture on the structure and properties of AISI A290C1M steel was studied in the paper. Using ion nitriding made it possible to shorten the technological cycle's duration by 5-6 times compared to two-stage nitriding, optimize the diffusion layer's composition, provide a technologically simple process automation scheme, and improve the quality of nitride coatings. After the proposed mode of ion nitriding, a saturated layer depth of 0.25-0.32 mm, hardness up to 1000 HV, and an increase in wear resistance by 2.17 times were obtained. Using 95% melamine + 5% sodium fluoride during nitriding in a powder mixture significantly simplified the technological process. It did not require additional expensive equipment, which in turn significantly simplified the nitriding process with energy savings. The proposed technology and the composition of the mixture contributed to a significant acceleration of the nitriding process of AISI A290C1M steel, compared to traditional gas nitriding, and to obtain a hardness of the nitride layer of 970 HV and an increase in wear resistance by 2.6 times. A nitriding speed is explained by a significantly higher amount of atomic nitrogen when using melamine instead of ammonia and by the almost simultaneous disintegration of nanodispersed particles when the nitriding temperature was reached. After nitriding in a powder mixture, steel was subject to the slightest wear.
