Abstract:The past 30 years of the reform and opening-up in China have witnessed rapid growth of demography and population studies.This paper reflects on developments in research methods in demography since China's reform and opening-up in the fertility rate perspective.The paper summarizes applications and changes of fertility rate measures and models in fertility rate studies in China.There are fertility rate models that have been borrowed from the West,but also approaches and models that have been developed or modified by the Chinese scholars.This paper provides an overview of the major methods on fertility rate studies and their contribution to fertility rate studies in China.

Abstract:The family planning policy has achieved remarkable results since its implement for over thirty years in China.The contempo-rary university students, who are a group of people influenced by the one-child policy, are a group with typical characteristics.There-fore, their fertility concept is different from their parents, having new characteristics.This paper, selecting students from Northeast For-estry University and Heilongjiang University as the investigation objects, makes an investigation on the contemporary college students′view of birth through questionnaire and query literature.It analyzes the basic situation of contemporary college students′view of birth and changes by the obtained data, and further gives advices, helping students to establish a scientific and rational concept of fertility.

Abstract:Women's socio-economic characteristics,marital statuses,family structures,etc.play an important role in the family fertility decision-making.The findings and analyses of the family micro-data collected in the 2006 China Health Nutrition Sur-vey(CHNS) show that women's socio-economic characteristics such as educational level,social status,etc.are markedly cor-relative with their fertility rate.Other indicators that reveal family structures such as the extent of husbands' involvement in work,age gaps between husbands and wives,etc.also have a significant impact on their fertility rate.In addition,comparative analyses of urban and rural areas illustrate that the elevation of women's educational level has a bigger impact on their fertility rate in rural areas than in urban areas.

Abstract:China's fertility policy, a national priority for over two decades, has evolved to contain highly localized features, yet variation in fertility policy implementation by locality has not been well documented. Using data collected at China's 420 prefecture-level administrative units, this study provides a quantitative summary of fertility policy implementation and examines the localized nature of fertility policymaking in China during the late 1990s. The findings indicate that China's fertility policy encompasses much geographic and demographic variation. Nevertheless, the one-child policy remains a core element and exerts a substantial impact on China's demographic processes. The average total fertility rate targeted by current fertility policies for China as a whole (the "policy fertility") is estimated at 1.47 at the end of the 1990s, a rate far below the replacement level.

Abstract:Reducing China's population has formerly been considered a good thing because of the perceived environmental and social risks of overpopulation, but it has recently become apparent that the resulting population decline may create problems that will become increasingly serious in the future. The results of a survey of 4600 women in nineteen Chinese provinces in 2005 indicated that young age, high income, high education level, urban location and good employment all decreased a woman's willingness to bear children. The risks created by declining fertility in these groups have been intensified by China's 'one child' family planning policy. However, as a result of current trends and China's policies, the country's population will continue to age, leading to social problems and difficulties for sustainable development both in China and around the world. Therefore, China's policy-makers must begin planning to adjust their policy by encouraging women to give birth to more than one child.

Abstract:With the rapid development of China's social economy, people's living standards continue to improve. However, the willingness to have children has shown a downward trend, and the fertility rate has also declined. This phenomenon has attracted widespread attention from all sectors of society. This study aims to conduct an in-depth analysis of the influencing factors of women's fertility intentions under policy guidance. A questionnaire survey was conducted to investigate and analyze the current influencing factors of women's fertility intentions. Research has shown that policy orientation significantly affects women's reproductive decisions. Individual factors such as age, education level, and occupation, as well as family factors such as family income and place of residence, are closely related to fertility intentions. The dissemination channels of the fertility policy affect women's understanding of the policy, which in turn affects fertility decision-making. Obstacles in career development also affect women's consideration of childbirth. The social environment, especially family support, has a significant impact on women's reproductive decisions. Meanwhile, the balance between family and career is also an important factor affecting women's willingness to have children. Based on this, this article suggests further optimization and adjustment of the current fertility policy, such as improving maternity leave benefits, introducing flexible work arrangements, providing career development support, supporting fertility assistance services, and breaking workplace discrimination, to better meet the diverse fertility needs of women and promote sustainable social development.

Abstract:This paper generalizes the status,differences and variation characteristics of fertility desire among rural and urban residents,based on the survey results and investigations in China from 2000 to 2008.The findings show that the difference of desired number of children is decreased among rural and urban residents,but the desired sex of children is prominent difference.Migration experience impacts on fertility desire and fertility behavior.The fertility desire of youth is gradually tending to consistent in the city.The difference of fertility desire is not significant between the only child and non-only child.The cost of fertility keep on increasing is the main reason of fertility desire which is descending.

Abstract:The Chinese government conducted its sixth national census in 2010 and released its major results in April 2011. According to the National Bureau of Statistics the quality of the census was very high. Although the currently released census results consist of limited statistics only, they shed new light on China's recent fertility levels, which have been debated among scholars and policy makers for more than a decade. The 2010 census results, however, also show considerable inconsistencies with those published by the United Nations Population Division recently. This paper will, on the basis of newly published census results and other available evidence, further examine China's recent fertility decline and its impact on the country's long-term development. It will also comment on the major discrepancies between the results of Chinese government recent population projection, the United Nations' World Population Prospects, the 2010 Revision and China's 2010 census, and investigate the underlying causes that have led to these differences.

Abstract:China's recent fertility data collected from the 2020 population census and 2017 fertility survey have considerably improved in quality. Based on these, we can assess the levels and patterns of fertility with high confidence. We reconstruct China's fertility history from 1990 using these two types of data and review the trends and characteristics of fertility transitions and changing fertility patterns in China. Over the past half century, China has experienced an extraordinary fertility transition and decline, which can be described as three stepwise downward jumps in fertility that occurred in the 1970s, 1990s, and 2010s. While the tempo effect has always depressed fertility, the quantum effect became positive in the most recent fertility decline, when China made successive adjustments to its fertility policy. Age, parity, and interval patterns of fertility in China have also undergone fundamental changes influenced by changing fertility policies and rapidly expanding higher education. The recent rapid decline in fertility is driven by the increasing postponement of marriage, a large reduction in fertility for lower education groups, and a rising proportion of younger women accessing higher education.

Abstract:There are a lot of debate on if the family planning policy should be loosen in the public. The causes of the debate are due to the very low fertility shown through national surveys and professional estimations. As it has shown that low fertility has brought some problems for more developed countries in the world, one proposes that the fertility in China should not be controlled. This paper is to estimate the demographic consequences with two scenarios, keep controlling and not being controlled, integrating the experiences of other countries, and to analyze how to plausibly choose fertility policy based on the long term consequences of the low fertility. The conclusion is that the government should pay close attention to the birth desire of Chinese people, appropriately and gradually open the current fertility policy, keep the fertility level in two children per family, in case that there appear fast and long term negative population increase, fast aging, and fast decrease of the total number of the population after zero increase so as to bring more serious population and socioeconomic problems to the nation and society.

Abstract:Objectives: The aims of the study were to reviews the history of China's population policy since 2011, and draw lessons from the Chinese experience in response to infertility. Methods: Data from the Chinese infertility status survey report (2009) and national statistical yearbooks (2009-2019) are used to assess the severity of infertility and reproductive centers shortage in China. Lessons from China was informed by a review of existing literature. Results: The proportion of couples suffering from infertility in China increased to 12.5% (166.8 million in 2009) from just 6.89% (86.6 million in 1988) two decades earlier, while the number of reproductive centers was one for every 3.1 million citizens. The total costs per live birth for medically assisted reproduction in Chinese public fertility clinics was 30,000 yuan in 2012. Among infertile couples, unemployed patients accounted for the largest proportion (21.9% in 2014). Currently in China, health regulations permit oocyte donation only from infertility patients who have 20 or more mature oocytes, of which at least 15 must be kept for their own treatment. Conclusion: It is necessary to integrate the reproductive health care of infertile people into the national public health service. In addition to relieving their economic burden, national policies should guide and support enterprises to guarantee employee medical leave for infertility. Growing numbers of bereaved older women who have lost their only child make it imperative to reconsider liberalizing the regulation of oocyte donation in China.

Abstract:This paper explores the intergenerational transmission effect and the mechanism of action of Chinese family fertility patterns in the context of the policy of liberalizing three children, and provides a new theoretical explanation for the causes of the current low fertility level. Based on the data from the Chinese General Social Survey, we find that the intergenerational transmission of fertility patterns in Chinese families is characteristic, and the fertility behavior of fathers has a significant impact on the fertility intentions and fertility behaviors of offspring, and the greater the number of siblings in the family of origin, the higher the fertility intentions and fertility behaviors of offspring. The intensity of intergenerational transmission of fertility patterns varied according to individual heterogeneity, with intergenerational transmission intensity being greater for males than females, and for rural than urban residents, and increasing with birth cohort. The article further verifies that intergenerational transmission of socioeconomic status, and differences in old-age burden are important mechanisms for the intergenerational transmission of fertility patterns. Based on the above analysis, this article provides ideas for reversing the birth rate and optimizing the fertility policy.

Abstract:Reproductive health has been one of the most important topics in the area of population and heath, which deeply affects the economic and social development around the world and therefore is of universal concern. Currently, the fertility and reproductive health of human beings is seriously affected by gradually increased childbearing age, environment pollution, social stress, life style alteration, etc. In China, the “Second-Child” policy is also bringing new challenge for human reproductive health. To meet the challenge, the Department of Medical Science, Department of Information Science, Department of Chemical Science, Department of Life science, and Department of Policy in National Natural Science Foundation of China jointly hosted the 170th “Shuangqing Forum” focusing on “Fertility and reproductive health” on Dec 1–2, 2016. More than 40 experts in the fields of reproductive biology, reproductive medicine, reproductive engineering, genetics, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, chemistry, imaging, and epidemiology were invited to attend the forum. The participants conducted full and in-depth discussion on five topics including “reproductive engineering and stem cells”, “germcell development and maturation”, “embryonic implantation and pregnancy maintain”, “fetal development and offspring health”, and “new technology in reproductive medicine”. The key scientific questions and major research directions in the field were subsequently summarized. This article reports the contents and scientific questions discussed in the forum, aiming to promote the development of the related areas.
