Abstract:Abductive inference is a process of thought which introduces new ideas by means of forming explanatory hypotheses.Its cognitive mechanism is a similarity-based relevance and integration.And this characteristic is shared by metaphoric thought,one of the basic cognitive abilities for human survival.On the basis of their commonality,abductive inference can be applied to analyzing the formation and evolution of scientific metaphors.And in scientific practice,the formation of metaphoric hypothesis is the same as that of literal hypothesis,which is relying on the general steps of abductive inference,having truth conditions,and being falsifiable as well.Faced with the open unknown world,various metaphoric hypotheses will be improved or replaced in abductive inference that searches for the best explanation,which contributes to the continuous evolution of scientific theories.The comparative study of abductive inference and metaphoric thought can shed new light on certain essential characteristic of human thought.

Abstract:Considered the main basis of reasoning,evidence is one of the important topics in contemporary philosophical epistemology.As regards the concept of evidence,scholars of different historical periods have different views and understandings: it referred to sign evidence in ancient Greek and Roman times;with the advent of modern science,it came to be identified with inductive evidence;today,it is strictly based on probability theory.In China,the conceptualization of evidence has developed from the traditional character-center theory to the modern logic-centrism.A detailed analysis of the evolution of the concept of evidence shows that this concept can never be adequately represented in the simple language of logic and can be understood only through epistemological studies of the content of evidence.

Abstract:The importance of resolving the problem of reducing students’ burden is to establish in the classroom. Through exploring the micro-research, the author found that the class must be delightful, enjoyable, and well-regulated so that students could be fond of learning, enjoy learning, and be good at learning. In teaching, appropriately using the analogy is one of the practical methods. The analogy can motive students to have learning interests, enlighten their thinking, and expand their horizons. Applying analogy appropriately can promote students to understand scientific concepts, principles, and regulations. In this way, students will improve their learning efficiency. It is significant to reduce students’ burden and improve teaching quality. This paper elaborated the application of analogy in junior high school’s Science teaching from four aspects: connotation, function, application principle, and development approach. From the micro-research of analogy, this paper aims to improve teaching efficiency, reduce students’ load, and provide other educators with examples.

Abstract:Analogy plays an important role in creativity, and is extensively used in science as well as art. In this paper we introduce a technique for the automated generation of cross-domain analogies based on a novel evolutionary algorithm (EA). Unlike existing work in computational analogy-making restricted to creating analogies between two given cases, our approach, for a given case, is capable of creating an analogy along with the novel analogous case itself. Our algorithm is based on the concept of "memes", which are units of culture, or knowledge, undergoing variation and selection under a fitness measure, and represents evolving pieces of knowledge as semantic networks. Using a fitness function based on Gentner's structure mapping theory of analogies, we demonstrate the feasibility of spontaneously generating semantic networks that are analogous to a given base network.

Abstract:The paper analizes a set of issues related to analogy and analogical reasoning, namely: 1) The problem of analogy and its duplicity; 2) The role of analogy in demonstrative reasoning; 3) The role of analogy in non-demonstrative reasoning; 4) The limits of analogy; 5) The convergence, particularly in multiple analogical reasoning, of these two apparently distinct aspects and its methodological and philosophical consequences. Abstract:I'll show that the kind of analogy between life and information [argue for by authors such as Davies (2000), Walker and Davies (2013), Dyson (1979), Gleick (2011), Kurzweil (2012), Ward (2009)], that seems to be central to the effect that artificial mind may represents an expected advance in the life evolution in Universe, is like the design argument and that if the design argument is unfounded and invalid, the argument to the effect that artificial mind may represents an expected advance in the life evolution in Universe is also unfounded and invalid. However, if we are prepared to admit (though we should not do) this method of reasoning as valid, I'll show that the analogy between life and information to the effect that artificial mind may represents an expected advance in the life evolution in Universe seems suggest some type of reductionism of life to information, but biology respectively chemistry or physics are not reductionist, contrary to what seems to be suggested by the analogy between life and information.

Abstract:The present study,by using experiments to survey 118 students in grades 2-6, aims to explore Chinese-speaking children’s use of analogy when they read English words,as well as the relationship between their English reading ability and their Chinese reading ability.The results show the following: the Chinese-speaking children use analogy when they read English words,though in a fashion that reflects the structural features of their mother tongue;their ability to use analogy in English helps to predict their English reading ability,even after they have put under control their Chinese-language ability and learning experience; and vocabulary serves as an important factor that has an effect on their analogy.

The Analogy Retriever – an Idea Generation Tool

Abstract:Idea generation plays a vital role in design, but coming up with ideas, especially creative ideas, is often challenging. Analogy is considered as a fundamental component of creativity and a beneficial method for idea generation. This paper presents a computer-based tool, named the Analogy Retriever, for assisting designers in idea generation and prospectively in idea elaboration. The tool is based on an algorithm simulating aspects of the human cognitive process of analogy. It is focused on solving proportional analogy problems (A:B::C:X) by retrieving the unknown term X from a knowledge database. The Analogy Retriever has been indicated to be useful and effective for helping the designers concerned generate creative ideas through conducting a case study. The results indicate that the Analogy Retriever, in its current formulation, can significantly improve the quantity, quality, novelty, and variety of the ideas produced. The tool is suggested to be greatly beneficial to design space exploration and expansion.

Abstract:<p>Analogical reasoning allows children to generate new abstractions from experience, which drives early learning. But our current understanding of analogical learning is based primarily on evidence from the West, and new data from Asia seem to call into question that information. In this article, we describe our finding that East Asian children do not share their Western peers' strong bias for object similarity—often cited as the major reason for difficulties in relational reasoning. We analyze how this difference affects the ways analogy shapes learning in different cultures, such as what children use as base analogs and their likelihood of using comparison that results in relational abstraction. We also address cross‐cultural differences, which are evident in classroom contexts, since teachers from the United States and East Asia use analogy differently. Overall, cross‐cultural data are necessary to answer critical questions in theories of analogical learning; in this article, we chart pressing research questions and look ahead at directions for the field.</p>

StoryAnalogy: Deriving Story-level Analogies from Large Language Models to Unlock Analogical Understanding

Abstract:Analogy-making between narratives is crucial for human reasoning. In this paper, we evaluate the ability to identify and generate analogies by constructing a first-of-its-kind large-scale story-level analogy corpus, \textsc{StoryAnalogy}, which contains 24K story pairs from diverse domains with human annotations on two similarities from the extended Structure-Mapping Theory. We design a set of tests on \textsc{StoryAnalogy}, presenting the first evaluation of story-level analogy identification and generation. Interestingly, we find that the analogy identification tasks are incredibly difficult not only for sentence embedding models but also for the recent large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT and LLaMa. ChatGPT, for example, only achieved around 30% accuracy in multiple-choice questions (compared to over 85% accuracy for humans). Furthermore, we observe that the data in \textsc{StoryAnalogy} can improve the quality of analogy generation in LLMs, where a fine-tuned FlanT5-xxl model achieves comparable performance to zero-shot ChatGPT.

Abstract:Analogy is justified in administrative law with the following reasons:(1) there exist loopholes of law;(2) to prevent legal rules from infringement by the executive;and(3) analogy is not inconsistent with the principle of democracy or invariability of law-making.As for its applicability,analogy only applies to of welfares rather than of peace or order. While applying in the administration of welfares,analogy should be treated with an overall point and prohibitions on disadvantageous analogy should be deserted.The principle is to be held that public law prevails while private law is appropriately limited.

Abstract:Analogical reasoning is a powerful qualitative reasoning tool that enables humans to connect two situations, and to generalize their knowledge from familiar to novel situations. Cognitive Science research provides valuable insights into the richness and complexity of analogical reasoning, together with implementations of expressive analogical reasoners with limited scalability. Modern scalable AI techniques with the potential to reason by analogy have been only applied to the special case of proportional analogy, and not to understanding higher-order analogies. In this paper, we aim to bridge the gap by: 1) formalizing six dimensions of analogy based on mature insights from Cognitive Science research, 2) annotating a corpus of fables with each of these dimensions, and 3) defining four tasks with increasing complexity that enable scalable evaluation of AI techniques. Experiments with language models and neuro-symbolic AI reasoners on these tasks reveal that state-of-the-art methods can be applied to reason by analogy with a limited success, motivating the need for further research towards comprehensive and scalable analogical reasoning by AI. We make all our code and data available.

Abstract:Humans regularly engage in analogical thinking, relating personal experiences to current situations (X is analogous to Y because of Z). Analogical thinking allows humans to solve problems in creative ways, grasp difficult concepts, and articulate ideas more effectively. Can language models (LMs) do the same? To answer this question, we propose AnaloBench, a benchmark to determine analogical reasoning ability in LMs. Our benchmarking approach focuses on aspects of this ability that are common among humans: (i) recalling related experiences from a large amount of information, and (ii) applying analogical reasoning to complex and lengthy scenarios. We test a broad collection of proprietary models (e.g., GPT family, Claude V2) and open source models such as LLaMA2. As in prior results, scaling up LMs results in some performance boosts. Surprisingly, scale offers minimal gains when, (i) analogies involve lengthy scenarios, or (ii) recalling relevant scenarios from a large pool of information, a process analogous to finding a needle in a haystack. We hope these observations encourage further research in this field.

Abstract:Analogy is a figure of speech used in different fields including advertising. Metaphor and simile are the figurative devices used for creating analogy. Unlike metaphor and simile, analogy has not received enough attention from researchers. There are limited number of studies on analogy as an independent literary phenomenon and is rarely studied as a persuasive tool used in advertising. Accordingly, the main aim of this study is to highlight successful applications of analogy in advertisements to demonstrate its persuasive effect in directing the audience to purchase the products being advertised. Also, it is aimed at revealing the pragmatic strategies and persuasive appeals contribute in making persuasive analogy. The main findings of the study have been: 1) analogy is an effective figure of speech which plays a significant role in the field of advertising to raise the audience’s interest and respectively raise the essence of persuasion; 2) the use of images (visual metaphor) are noticeably greater than verbal figurative devices; 3) with regard to the speech acts, directive and representative have been used most frequently; 4) the advertisers relied mainly upon metaphor in creating advertisements, while little use of similes have been made; and 5) pathos has been the main appeal the advertisers employed for the purpose of persuasion.

Abstract:Unfamiliar measurements usually hinder readers from grasping the scale of the numerical data, understanding the content, and feeling engaged with the context. To enhance data comprehension and communication, we leverage analogies to bridge the gap between abstract data and familiar measurements. In this work, we first conduct semi-structured interviews with design experts to identify design problems and summarize design considerations. Then, we collect an analogy dataset of 138 cases from various online sources. Based on the collected dataset, we characterize a design space for creating data analogies. Next, we build a prototype system, AnalogyMate, that automatically suggests data analogies, their corresponding design solutions, and generated visual representations powered by generative AI. The study results show the usefulness of AnalogyMate in aiding the creation process of data analogies and the effectiveness of data analogy in enhancing data comprehension and communication.
