Abstract:Traditional rhetoric theory regards metaphor and metonymy as two literary rhetoric devices. Modern cognitive linguistics believes that metaphor does not only exist in the field of literature. Metaphor is not only a rhetorical device but also a way of thinking. However, the current research on metaphor and metonymy is still limited to the English language world. Hence, there is a lack of knowledge and research on metaphor and metonymy across languages and cultures. This paper begins with an overview of metaphor from the perspective of modern cognitive linguistics. Then, it expounds on the differences between metaphor and metonymy from two aspects of structure and function. Besides, this paper analyzes the differences between metaphor and metonymy with examples based on the Chinese cultural background.

Abstract:Translation and metaphor share some fundamental characteristics.Both metaphor and translation have to do with the transformation of signs;in both activities,the meaning results from integration of differed contexts;both of them emphasize the importance of "difference";and both activities have similar cognitive mode and functions.This paper thus argues that translation is metaphor and that further discussions on this nature of translation may provide us with a better understanding of the latter as well as insights into the studies of related issues.

Abstract:Abduction and metaphor are two significant concepts in cognitive science. It is found that the both mental processes are on the basis of certain similarity. The similarity inspires us to seek the answers to the following two questions: (1) Whether there is a common cognitive mechanism behind abduction and metaphor? And (2) if there is, whether this common mechanism could be interpreted within the unified frame of modern intelligence theory? Centering on these two issues, the paper attempts to characterize and interpret the generation and evolution of scientific metaphors from the perspective of the cognitive mechanism of abductive inference. Then it interprets the common cognitive mechanism behind abduction and metaphor within Hawkins’ frame of intelligence theory. The commonality between abduction and metaphor indicates the potential to further explore human intelligence.

Abstract:This study focuses on the comparisons of the syntactic-semantic structures between English and Chinese middles from the perspectives of cognitive linguistics and linguistic typology.The main findings are:i)The relative syntactic position of the theme of a middle causes the cross-category harmony of its predicate-argument role.ii)The degree of topicalization of a Chinese middle is greater than that of an English middle.The semantic restriction,derived from the theme of an English middle on its predicate,is greater than that of a Chinese middle on its predicate.iii)There are more verbs that can be used in Chinese middles than those used in English.iv)The predicate-argument structures between English middles and Chinese middles are different.The former is composed of "Vi+Adv" and the semantic restrictions between the two are weaker.The latter is composed of "Aux+Vi" and the semantic restrictions between the two are greater.

Abstract:There are two kinds of lexical metaphor:an extension of the literal meaning of a word and a word created exclusively for figurative use.On the basis of the working definition of a lexical metaphor and its motivation, the paper makes a contrastive analysis of 434 English and Chinese words from 12 semantic fields to reveal that i) the percentage of English lexical metaphor is higher than its Chinese counterpart,ii) there is more metaphorical meanings of an average English word,and 3) English lexical metaphors are less transparent.

Abstract:This paper discusses semantic analogy caused by sense-relations in word groups.In the previous studies on semantic analogy,usually only synonymous and antonymous word groups are concerned,but actually semantic analogy also occurs in other types of word groups,such as co-hyponymous,hyponymous and thematic groups.It analyses several word groups where semantic analogy occurrs in modern Chinese,presents three psychological constraints to semantic analogy:1) structural consistency,2) relational focus,and 3) systematicity,and claims that semantic analogy is fundamentally a domain-crossing mapping,motivated by isomorphism between sense-relations of different conceptual domains.And as a prototypical category,semantic analogy involves prototypical graduality.Finally it attempts to make clear the relations between some relevant phenomena(e.g.,sense extension) and semantic analogy,and emphasizes the importance of utterance meaning,where the mechanisms and rules of language change can be clearly observed.

Abstract:This paper puts forward the mapping inheritance hypothesis which states that the ultimate goal of mapping is to inherit the attributes of source domains by comparing structures 'as A as Y'(Y-A) and 'n n/n + n'. Furthermore, we have built a knowledge base for simile and explored the distribution of source domain and its attribute hierarchy. The study shows that the number of S domain words in Chinese simile is different from metaphor, they only have in common 155 S domain words. Although simile and metaphor both tend to choose the semantic category B_object as their source domain, simile expressions are more likely to choose plants and animals, metaphorical expressions are more likely to choose inanimate objects.

Abstract:This paper explores the similar features of Chinese noun metaphors and presents a metaphorical inference approach by using metaphorical external similarities,dictionary information and the maximum entropy model.To detect Chinese noun metaphorical patterns of 'n+n',a dictionary with one semantic class per word is established by tailoring the Chinese Concept Dictionary(CCD)through the method of human-machine interaction.This proves the validity of the noun metaphor knowledge base and prepares for later identification experiments.The experiments indicate that the maximum entropy model,the metaphorical similarity and the dictionary all contributes to the success identification of noun metphors.

Abstract:Metaphor and metonymy, which are treated as two basic cognitive and conceptual mechanisms in cognitive linguistics, are highly interactive to each other. Metaphor from metonymy, as a complicated linguistic device and cognitive mechanism, has long been ignored although it helps create abundant implications and aesthetic value in poetry. This paper explores functions of metaphor from metonymy in meaning construction in classical Chinese poetry in order to offer a new perspective for the research of classical Chinese poetry and provide implications for appreciation, translation and teaching of classical Chinese poetry.

Abstract:This article argues that metonymy provides "cognitive roundabouts" that semiotically create more meaning in fictional narrative against the popular views that metonymy provides "referential shorthand" and "communicative shortcuts." In the light of Lakoff and Johnson's observation on the relationship between symbolic metonymy and the comprehension of religious and cultural concepts, it explores the semiotic potentialities of metonymy in constructing fictional reality with special reference to O. Henry's short story "The Cop and the Anthem." It concludes that artistic deployment of metonymic devices comically exploits and explicitizes various conceptual associations and logical relations between the source and the target and requires greater cognitive effort from the reader; in defamiliarizing the fictional representation, the narrative text produces more symbolic meanings and ultimately refamiliarizes the reader with aspects of actual-world reality that are otherwise hardly perceivable.

Abstract:Cognitive prominence plays a key role in the construction of similarity in metaphor.Metaphor is possible because the two things that the source and the target stand for are similar to each other.However,the similarity that the two domains share is actually characterized merely by a particular facet or a particular point of the two relevant things,and it is the result of the prominence brought up by human cognition when human beings perceive similarity in difference shown by the two things.There are two main categories of elements for the exercise of cognitive salience in metaphoric similarity:one is the potentiality of similarity shown between things in the world,and the other is the self-motivation of the addresser intending to use a metaphor.The potentiality can be classified into four:necessity,facticity,occasionality and imposition.The self-motivation can be categorized into two:intentionality and self-emergence.

Abstract:While it is well known that Zhuangzi uses metaphor extensively, there is much less appreciation of the role that it plays in his thought—a topic that is investigated in this essay. At the same time, this investigation is closely concerned with questions about the nature of metaphor. Comparisons are made between a central metaphorical structure in the Zhuangzi on the one hand and contemporary views of the nature of metaphor by Donald Davidson and by Lakoff and Johnson on the other. It is hoped that these comparisons will help to illuminate the central metaphorical structure and its role in the philosophy of the Zhuangzi.

Abstract:The article is devoted to the feasibility of distinction between metonymy and metaphor; since ancient times, language researchers have studied them together because they are based on the transfer of names by similarity or analogy of features. The main task of the article is to outline the dominant theories of metonymy and metaphor, developed in the plane of the semantic-syntactic paradigm, as well as to present cognitively oriented considerations about the essence of these two phenomena, which prove their distinction. Based on the basic postulates of cognitive linguistics, particularly the theory of conceptual metaphor, the theory of mental spaces, and the theory of conceptual integration, the authors prove a significant difference between the two outlined linguocognitive mechanisms. Based on phraseological units of modern French, the authors prove, first, that metonymy represents a real adjacency of concepts, while metaphor - hypothetical. Secondly, their difference lies in the different number of conceptual spheres involved in metonymization (one conceptosphere) and metaphorization (more than two conceptospheres). Thirdly, in metaphorization, projected images reflect various (sometimes unexpected) associations that link different spheres of GOAL and SOURCE, while in metonymization, projected images adhere to logically established connections.

Abstract:Metaphor and simile, two prevalent forms of figurative language widely employed in daily communication, serve as significant research subjects in linguistics. The Career of Metaphor Theory in cognitive linguistics posits that as conventionality increases, the cognitive mechanisms of metaphor comprehension shift from "comparison" to "categorization." In line with this notion, prior electrophysiological investigations have revealed that novel metaphors elicit a stronger N400 brain response compared to conventional metaphors. However, the observed N400 difference between conventional and novel metaphors may merely stem from the familiarity contrast between them, as conventional metaphors are typically more familiar than novel ones. To address this dichotomy, the present study not only compared the N400 responses between conventional and novel metaphors but also between conventional and novel similes. While conventional and novel similes differ in familiarity, similar to conventional and novel metaphors, both are processed via "comparison" mechanisms. The results revealed that novel metaphors elicited larger N400 amplitudes compared to conventional metaphors, aligning with previous findings. In contrast, no significant N400 differences were observed between conventional and novel similes, suggesting that familiarity disparity is unlikely to account for N400 distinctions. Our findings imply that conventional and novel metaphors undergo distinct cognitive processing mechanisms ("comparison" versus "categorization"), thereby providing further empirical validation for the Career of Metaphor Theory.

Abstract:One of Katz's significant contributions to the study of figurative language is his work highlighting the importance of familiarity in metaphor processing. In this study, we examined how metaphor and simile comprehension change as a function of familiarity. The Categorization model (Glucksberg, Trends in Cognitive Sciences, 2003, 7, 92) proposes that metaphor comprehension relies on an automatic process (categorization) regardless of familiarity. By contrast, the Career of Metaphor model (Bowdle & Gentner, Psychological Review, 2005, 112, 193) proposes that as conventionality or familiarity declines, comprehension shifts from categorization to comparison, a controlled, effortful process. Both models assume that similes, regardless of familiarity, are understood through controlled, comparison processes. The present study used a resource depletion manipulation to investigate the processes recruited in metaphor and simile comprehension. Because resource depletion negatively impacts controlled, effortful processes but does not affect automatic processes (Schmeichel et al., Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 2003, 85, 33), comparing the effects of resource depletion on comprehension of familiar and unfamiliar metaphors and similes may shed light on the comprehension processes (controlled or automatic) being used. Across two experiments, we induced resource depletion using a Stroop task and tested the impact of depletion on metaphor and simile comprehension. Metaphor stimuli were drawn from Katz et al. (Metaphor and Symbolic Activity, 1988, 3, 191) normed database; similes were constructed by adding the word like to each metaphor (e.g., love is (like) a flower). For both tropes, resource depletion slowed comprehension of unfamiliar expressions but had no little-or-no impact on highly familiar expressions. Our results suggest that comprehension of both similes and metaphors shifts from automatic to controlled processing as familiarity decreases.
