Abstract: The goal of the study is to investigate the effectiveness of applying Google Earth (GE) in an elementary science lesson by comparing the academic results between GE-integrated instruction and traditional instruction. The teaching practice was implemented in two Chinese elementary schools located in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. The GE-integrated and traditional inquiry activities were both designed based on 5E learning cycle and qualitative and quantitative methods were used to test the effectiveness of GE-integrated instruction. Data analysis found that: (1) students shown great interests in GE-integrated science lesson; (2) teachers held positive attitude toward the application of GE in science teaching; (3) there were no significant differences in academic results between traditional instruction and GE-integrated instruction. Suggestions and proposals were put forward at the end of the study.

Abstract:Digital Earth (DE) is a virtual presentation of the planet based on geographic coordinate, and is an information system with tremendous amount of multiple resolutions and multiple scales data as shown in multiple dimensions. Since the exact description about DE has not completed, most experts have their own understanding of DE, so there are a lot of various digital earth prototype system was developed, such as the Alexandria digital earth modeling system developed by the UCSB, digital earth prototype developed by the NASA, and earth simulator developed by the Japan and so on. Each of them has their own infrastructure and characteristics in developing process. Besides, there are still many commercial digital earth software popularly, such as the famous Google earth, word wind, skyline, and blue link and so on. They have the one biggest common that is all of them were based on the vast remote sensing image and represented by virtual reality technology. But when we reviewed the current situation of digital earth research presented from the outcomes of the International Symposium on Digital Earth four times, and investigated most of these digital earth system and software, we found the studies on digital earth system have some shortcomings. Therefore, facing this situation, in this paper, firstly, we will review the situation and the development of the Digital Earth research. Then, we will emphasize on how to construct the Digital Earth Prototype and develop its system from some new perspectives by the most prevalent techniques.

Abstract:Although many of the first-generation Digital Earth systems have proven to be quite useful for the modeling and visualization of geospatial objects relevant to the Earth’s surface and near-surface, they were not designed for the purpose of modeling and application in geological or atmospheric space. There is a pressing need for a new Digital Earth system that can process geospatial information with full dimensionality. In this paper, we present a new Digital Earth system, termed SolidEarth, as an alternative virtual globe for the modeling and visualization of the whole Earth space including its surface, interior, and exterior space. SolidEarth consists of four functional components: modeling in geographical space, modeling in geological space, modeling in atmospheric space, and, integrated visualization and analysis. SolidEarth has a comprehensive treatment to the third spatial dimension and a series of sophisticated 3D spatial analysis functions. Therefore, it is well-suited to the volumetric representation and visual analysis of the inner/ outer spheres in Earth space. SolidEarth can be used in a number of fields such as geoscience research and education, the construction of Digital Earth applications, and other professional practices of Earth science.

Abstract:Abstract The previous 25 chapters introduced relevant technologies, applications, and other topics related to Digital Earth. Respective challenges and future research were also proposed by various authors. In this concluding chapter, we briefly review Digital Earth past and present, followed by a set of challenges and future trends, speculating on how Digital Earth may evolve over the coming years. Such challenges and trends are discussed in the context of science drivers, technological advances, application adoption, and relevant virtual—physical community building.

Abstract:The authors are experienced in working with children and students in the field of early warning and crises management and cartography. All these topics are closely connected to Digital Earth (DE) ideas. On the basis of a questionnaire, the young generation's comprehension of DE concept is clarified. Students from different age groups (from 19 to 36) from different countries and with different social, cultural, economical and political backgrounds are asked to provide definition of DE and describe their basic ideas about meaning, methodology and applications of the concept. The questions aim to discover the young generation's comprehension of DE ideas. They partially cover the newest trends of DE development like social, cultural and environmental issues as well as the styles of new communications (Google Earth, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.). In order to assure the future development of the DE science, it is important to take into account the young generation's expectations. Some aspects of DE development are considered in the Conclusions.

Abstract:The utilization of information technology in the field of education, particularly Google Earth, has become a significant breakthrough. This article examines the potential of Google Earth as a map learning tool at SDN Sidomulyo 02. The research focuses on students and teachers from grades 4-6, employing a qualitative approach with a case study. The research results indicate an improvement in student engagement, a better understanding of map concepts, and increased learning motivation. Google Earth provides a dynamic, visual, and interactive experience, allowing students to explore the world virtually. This advantage is evident in the identification of map symbols, understanding legends, and interpreting geographical information. A comparison with conventional methods emphasizes the superiority of Google Earth in the context of map learning, supporting a contextual learning approach. Despite the positive outcomes, challenges in implementation involve a learning curve for teachers. Therefore, advanced training and technical support are key to the effectiveness of Google Earth usage. This article contributes to a deeper understanding of the positive impact of Google Earth on students' geospatial literacy. Its implications include recommendations for teachers and policymakers to integrate learning technologies, especially Google Earth, into elementary education curricula. As a significant contribution, this research paves the way for the broader use of similar technologies in elementary education and serves as a foundation for further research in the development of learning methods that integrate technology.

Abstract:The creation of a digital representation of the Earth and its associated data is a complex and difﬁcult task. The incredible size of geospatial data and differences between data sets pose challenges related to big data, data creation, and data integration. Advances in globe representation and visualization have made use of Discrete Global Grid Systems (DGGSs) that discretize the globe into a set of cells to which data are assigned. DGGSs are well studied and important in GIS, OGC, and Digital Earth communities. However, DGGSs have not been introduced very well to computer graphics community. In addition, there are many advanced techniques related to geospatial data creation and representation that might be very useful to Digital Earth community. In this paper, we provide an overview of DGGSs and their use in digitally representing the Earth as well as the list of current Digital Earths and their method of Earth representation. In addition, we present key research areas and related papers in computer graphics that are useful for a Digital Earth framework. Moreover, we list a number of applications of Digital Earths and their related works.

Abstract:<span>A novel method to create a physicalization of Digital Earth resulted a new type of analogue and tactile geographic information system (GIS). The model was tested by students in Australia, who shared insights into how the model supported their learning about the concept of "overlay" while providing an interesting and engaging learning platform. Observations suggest the model promoted collaborative learning, and provided a bridge between paper maps and digital GIS. This study offers insight into preferences of school children for physicalization models in geography education and contributes to an understanding of children's spatial thinking and understanding of the overlay concept.</span>

Abstract:The concept of Digital Earth (DE) was formalized by Al Gore in 1998. At that time the technologies needed for its implementation were in an embryonic stage and the concept was quite visionary. Since then digital technologies have progressed significantly and their speed and pervasiveness have generated and are still causing the digital transformation of our society. This creates new opportunities and challenges for the realization of DE. 'What is DE today?', 'What could DE be in the future?', and 'What is needed to make DE a reality?'. To answer these questions it is necessary to examine DE considering all the technological, scientific, social, and economic aspects, but also bearing in mind the principles that inspired its formulation. By understanding the lessons learned from the past, it becomes possible to identify the remaining scientific and technological challenges, and the actions needed to achieve the ultimate goal of a 'Digital Earth for all'. This article reviews the evolution of the DE vision and its multiple definitions, illustrates what has been achieved so far, explains the impact of digital transformation, illustrates the new vision, and concludes with possible future scenarios and recommended actions to facilitate full DE implementation.

Abstract:Digital Earth is the Virtual Earth integrated with Earth’s mass, the three-dimensional, dynamic data by geographical coordinates. It plays a major role in the field of spatial information. Remote sensing satellite data is an important part of spatial data resources. However, remote sensing satellite data is massive, multi-source, heterogeneous . In order to realize the digital earth remote sensing data sharing and interoperability by masking the differences between remote sensing data to integrate remote sensing information resources in a unified Digital Earth. The article study the web service for remote sensing data sharing and interoperability on the basis of a full investigation for the characteristics of multi-source remote sensing data, This article raise a Web Service-based Earth remote sensing data service system solution with reference to the framework of OGC Web Services Space, so as to provide powerful data support for digital earth.

Abstract:This paper is summarized on geographical information science. Since 1995, geographers have studied and applied 3S (Remote Sensing, Global Positioning System and Geographical Information System). Since 1998, a part of geographers have studied digital earth. Since 2000, a part of geographers have studied earth observation system. In the world, someone is using "geographical information science" magazine ; someone is using "spatial information technique ". Authors have researched and lectured geographical information science, geographical information system, and GPS more than 10 years. Put forward outer space information and geographical information network system, which is an open complexity information giant system. We also have suggested a newly geographical information system. In adding, we have advanced outer space-earth-human-computer system to develop human and earth relationship. This paper discusses the geographical information science, which is a very important support for information society with sustainable development. Finally, this paper points out the future direction and foreground of geographical information science.

Abstract:It has been a world wide trend to develop the digital region,digital city and even digital earth in the past few years.Digital Geo-spatial Framework(DGSF)serves as a platform for integrating all the relevant textural,graphical,pictorial and video data with multi-scale,multi-media,multi-resolution and temporal characters.The requirements to DGSF are analyzed in the first section of this paper.The basic concepts and characteristics of DGSF are discussed in the second section.The five key issues for further development of DGSF and its two applications are discussed in the3rd and4th part of this paper.

Abstract:With the development of society, the design concept of urban landscape needs to be constantly updated. The lack of functional innovation, service experience, and intelligent management cannot bring urban residents a sense of experience. In modern urban landscape design, the urban public landscape is combined with digital media art, to constantly renew urban image and optimize urban function. However, several methods have been created for the real-time presentation of very vast terrains. Though several of these solutions combined high-quality representation with amazing efficiency, the majority of them are based on the basic concept that the terrain is defined by a constant height map that cannot be changed at run time. These systems usually make considerable use of raw terrain data preprocessing. They are generally intended for peak efficiency. Keeping the above in mind, this paper analyzes the 3D multimedia ecological landscape environment and teaching mode based on digital virtual technology. The purpose of this paper is to apply digital media art as an innovative technical tool and aesthetic thinking in the new era of urban landscape design and to innovate the concept and means of urban landscape design. As a new landscape design method, the application of digital media could make a visual display of the urban landscape. The intervention of virtual reality technology also enhances the interaction and perception of the urban landscape.

Abstract:Geographic information science and technology is playing an increasingly important role in studies of global change and earth system science.To meet the demands of surface information collection,data management,spatial analysis and applications at the global scale,new software based on 3D coordinate systems is urgently needed. This paper introduces an integrated software platform for remote sensing and geographic information system based on Google Earth: Global Mapper(GM) and Global Analyst(GA).Besides the powerful spatial data browsing functions of Google Earth,this platform can be used for global surface information extraction and collection,database construction,map overlay,image processing,visualization,and spherical geospatial analysis.This platform complements the defects of traditional 2D based software,and changes the ways of data collection and management,which can better serve the global change and earth system science community.

Abstract:This article aims to analyze and discuss the use of digital interactive games, such as learning tools to be used by educators in the classroom, as a resource for geography teaching-learning process in the early grades. This discussion arose from the analysis by geography course graduation students of the Federal University of Pará (UFPA), in the years 2013 and 2014, at which this tool has gained recognition of its potential by students. In this sense, the objective is a brief discussion, based on the analysis of some selected examples on how these digital games can become fundamental importance of resources for teaching Geography and how these should be used and applied in the classroom by educators in a critical way, which will allow students to have adequate learning about the geographic space.
