Abstract:Culture shock has gained attention and been observed from multi-disciplinary perspectives in international education, such as from anthropology, psychology, cultural psychology, intercultural communication studies, linguistics, and many others. By synthesising the ABC’s theory and intercultural communicative competence with their savoirs, the present study offers a perspective to analyse three international students’ culture shock experiences. As an explorative case study, the data were collected through in-depth interviews to extract the sojourners’ narratives, which were then transcribed in the form of text or quotations. It was found that the affective, behavioural, and cognitive dimensions were identified and emerged in each respondent. In the affective, overwhelming emotions, language limitation, and feelings of isolation were felt in various intensities. From the data, the respondents claimed to have lacked intrapersonal skills to prepare themselves for the culture of the host country along with the socio-cultural aspects. In addition, they found social support by individuals or officials essential for reducing negative feelings. In the behavioural dimension, these respondents started to adapt to the situation though they still found it challenging to confirm and clarify any unfamiliar encounters. Finally, in the cognitive dimension, the respondents mingled and integrated into the locals, both in their academic and social lives. It is suggested that elements of intercultural communicative competence, namely intercultural attitude, knowledge of the host culture, skills of relating and discovery, and critical cultural awareness may have the potential to manage culture shock effectively. It should be incorporated into international higher education and EFL pedagogy.

Abstract:Culture shock is a common phenomenon in the life of studying abroad. Universally, due to cultural differences in living habits, thinking mode, language level and other fields, Overseas Chinese students may experience four stages of cultural shock, namely euphoria, frustration, adjustment and adaptation, and reverse cultural shock. Each stage will have an impact on their physical and mental health. Therefore, it is necessary for overseas students who want to go abroad to master some countermeasures to adapt to cultural shock, so as to help them spend their overseas study life more smoothly and experience the least negative impact of cultural shock. Based on the cultural shock phenomenon reflected in the film “American dreams in China”, this paper discusses the causes of cultural shock for Chinese overseas students and cultural adaptation tactics in intercultural communication.

Abstract:Humans, influenced by their environment and culture, form diverse characters. Tolerance and openness between cultures is the key to coexistence. Joining a group brings a solution in culture, even if it conflicts with individual personalities. Dynamics and interactions between groups are needed to find a new culture, despite the potential for clashes due to cultural defenses. This phenomenon often occurs in students who migrate, facing culture shock due to cultural differences. Adjustment to the new environment is needed to overcome culture shock. Skilled adaptation communication can minimize the impact of culture shock and prevent conflict. This research uses descriptive qualitative methods with secondary data. Adaptation communication patterns of overseas students involve four stages: self-adjustment, frustration, readjustment, and development of meaningful communication. These four stages become the facility and heart of successful adaptation, improving students' communication and social relations with the campus environment.

Abstract:Abstract An increasingly interconnected world requires people to become versatile communicators in a variety of different settings. Language centers have a critical role to play in this process by offering language and culture training in multiple languages to students, professionals and the wider community alike. They may do so from the perspective of developing plurilingual pluricultural competence, translingual transcultural competence or intercultural communicative competence and intercultural citizenship. This paper takes as its framework translingual transcultural competence, which not only reflects the current trend of transnationalism and diasporic communities, but also emphasizes the need to be critically aware, culturally reflective and socially sensitive. In order to better understand affordances and challenges in developing this competence, or set of competences, the author surveyed and interviewed students and teachers at one university-affiliated language center offering 30 languages besides German as the main language of study. Students at all proficiency levels as well as native and non-native teachers of the language taught were included in the study. Whereas the student survey investigated awareness and attitude, identity and community as well as the autonomy and agency of students in the program, teacher interviews provided insights into program parameters, classroom pedagogy and out-of-class projects. Findings from the study indicate a strong foundation in multicompetence thinking with some challenges in developing the transcultural component.

Abstract:Abstract Due to globalisation, Asian countries have been pressed to improve their English skills to maintain international competitiveness. Though foreign educators heeded the call to meet the high demand of English learning in Taiwan, their turn-over rate remained persistently high. Assuming cultural differences might be a crucial cause, this study inquired into the cultural experience and adjustment of two foreign educators in Taiwan from a narrative inquiry approach. In addition to an extensive review of local literature, the narratives of the participants revealed the following: (1) strong motives and low/ inaccurate expectations might benefit cultural adjustment; (2) self-initiated relocation could imply more challenges than organizationally assigned relocation; (3) support and social network seem beneficial to cultural transition; (4) cultural differences were found in food, living environment, transportation/traffic, and social interactions; (5) required cultural adjustments include perseverance, trial and error, learning local language, acceptance, and contentment. Such findings not only shed light on Taiwanese culture but also bear implications for successful adjustments through the lens of foreign educators.

Abstract:By means of empirical research on the activities of classroom teaching and cultural experience for the improvement of the cross-cultural sensitivity of international students in Study Tour Project carried out by the Shanghai Center in spring 2009,findings show that some international students have difference in understanding of cultural differences and some tend to identify with deep-seated cultural differences;it is helpful for international students to improve their cross-cultural sensitivity that to some extent they participate in Chinese cultural experience activities selectively in pertinence and the design of cultural experience activities should be focused on training of communication confidence of international students;the learning motivation to transmit information and exchange emotion in Chinese should be made to improve their intercultural competence.

Abstract:Abstract Cultural communication is rooted in fusion: multicultural fusion requires that incoming cultures participate in various cultural activities at their place of arrival, such as cementing collaboration with local universities, reinforcing cooperation with local social groups, and strengthening collaboration with civil forces and local governments, and so on, thus allowing the incoming culture to become an important component of the local cultural milieu. The successes and difficulties that the Confucius Institutes have encountered in the course of their establishment can serve as illustrative examples of this process.

Abstract:In working with preparatory teachers, we have tried to “place diversity front and center” to help students “see culture” as a prerequisite for culturally responsive teaching. The language arts methods-course students who, like the authors, are White women from middle-or upper-income families, participated in learning opportunities that included writing cultural memoirs, field experiences in diverse settings, and written reflection on the relation between their cultural constructions and those of the students they were teaching. In this article, we turn around the culture question we’ve pushed the students to consider to ourselves: What are we learning about our students as cultural beings that is helping us prepare them more effectively to be culturally responsive teachers? We identified three areas of growth: We reconstructed our understanding of students as complex cultural beings, of ourselves as privileged teachers of the privileged, and of the nature and relationship of resistance and risk.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to explore foreign teachers' experience of cultural and life adaptation in China, including the difficulties, emotional stress, and challenges they confronted, as well as the useful coping strategies and resources that facilitated their cultural adaptation. Ten foreign professors who taught in China were recruited from three Chinese universities. Semi-structured interviews on the participants' experience of cross-cultural adaptation in China were conducted. Thematic analysis of the transcribed dialogs was performed, and five core themes emerged: multiple challenges, mixed negative emotions, active coping and insulation, rich supportive resources, and personal traits. In the cross-cultural adaptation process in China, the main challenges for foreign teachers were language barriers; a lack of supportive relationships; and conflicts in perceptions related to teaching, privacy, and boundaries. Useful coping strategies included seeking interpersonal interactions that provided emotional and instrumental support, developing localized teaching models, and maintaining connections with the culture of origin. Under circumstances with convenient living facilities and supportive interpersonal relationships, these strategies promoted the adaptation of foreign teachers with functional personality traits. The potential correlations among these different themes and the influence of their interactions on foreign teachers' adaptation experience were also discussed. The themes that emerged in our study can help clinicians and university administrators develop therapy methods and support systems for foreign teachers who work in Chinese universities.

Abstract:Due to the extensive development of globalization, the ethnic makeup of the world is becoming more and more complex, and the issue of cultural diversity has emerged as a key concern for all nations' educational systems. Cross-cultural education is an educational prescription for many western countries to deal with cultural diversity and strengthen national cohesion in order to address this issue and promote mutual respect, understanding, and communication between different groups and individuals. One of the most recent developments in global education is cross-cultural education, which has also given rise to a brand-new area of study in the field of education. The research has identified cross-cultural education as making up about 50% of all education. Numerous nations have practiced cross-cultural education, which has been promoted by UNESCO, with many issues that merit study. The traditional English teaching approach cannot meet the learning needs of today's students in light of the recent curriculum reform, and students have long engaged in passive learning. College English instructors must modify traditional teaching philosophies, adapt to contemporary developments, integrate information technology, use a variety of teaching techniques, fully pique students' interest in learning, and encourage them to take the initiative in their own education if they want to reclaim the initiative from the students in their classrooms.

Abstract:This paper aims to enable intercultural competence in the classroom with a group of homogeneous Chinese students without leaving their home country. This can be achieved through teaching EFL (English as a Foreign Language) writing in an innovative way. Authentic English writing requires Chinese students to change their thinking mindset. It requires a change of cultural perspectives by placing the concept of 'the individual' as part of their learning to write in English. This cultural change of thinking involves and demands that Chinese students critically examine the collective traditions that have otherwise influenced their ontological, social, and cognitive assumptions and beliefs in normal writing situations. This paper is derived from our teaching strategies to facilitate such moves and changes for intercultural learning with biographical devices used as a teaching method to enable the personal paradigm shift of the student.

Abstract:The proliferation of fake news and pseudoscience requires a proactive educational approach to the cultivation of critical thinking (CT); yet, university lecturers and students alike appear to have insufficient guidance. Moreover, studies on CT overlook globalization trends such as student mobility, where international students are a significant portion of the student body. Therefore, the goal of this study was to examine the way CT is conceptualized and experienced by instructors, local students, and international students from China in a science and engineering university, and accordingly design a culturally inclusive theoretical framework for CT cultivation in the digital era. The study applied an integrated dual-analytic approach, where data was collected via a survey and semi-structured interviews. The findings show that many instructors and students lack a comprehensive understanding of CT skills. The findings also show that the international students were more familiar with CT in theory and practice than the local students, with "analysis" as one of the prominent skills experienced in academic courses. The study presents a technology-enhanced instructional framework that integrates individual learning with collaborative and culturally inclusive assignments.

Abstract:Guided by cultural border crossing and teacher identity development theories, this case study explores the bumpy process of a junior Chinese faculty member’s border crossing into the U.S. teaching culture and analyzes the challenges, coping strategies, and consequences of his border crossing on teaching and teacher identity development. The study found the subject demonstrated an active process of adaptation during his border crossing and experienced multifaceted and ongoing identity development in which both Chinese culture and the culture that he embraced played important roles in reshaping and facilitating the development of his professional identity, teacher learning, and teaching practices.
