Abstract:Electrospinning is a versatile and viable technique for generating ultrathin fibers. Remarkable progress has been made with regard to the development of electrospinning methods and engineering of electrospun nanofibers to suit or enable various applications. We aim to provide a comprehensive overview of electrospinning, including the principle, methods, materials, and applications. We begin with a brief introduction to the early history of electrospinning, followed by discussion of its principle and typical apparatus. We then discuss its renaissance over the past two decades as a powerful technology for the production of nanofibers with diversified compositions, structures, and properties. Afterward, we discuss the applications of electrospun nanofibers, including their use as "smart" mats, filtration membranes, catalytic supports, energy harvesting/conversion/storage components, and photonic and electronic devices, as well as biomedical scaffolds. We highlight the most relevant and recent advances related to the applications of electrospun nanofibers by focusing on the most representative examples. We also offer perspectives on the challenges, opportunities, and new directions for future development. At the end, we discuss approaches to the scale-up production of electrospun nanofibers and briefly discuss various types of commercial products based on electrospun nanofibers that have found widespread use in our everyday life.

Abstract:Nanofibers have been the subject of recent intensive research due to their unique properties, especially their large surface-area-to-volume ratio, which is about 1000 times higher than that of a human hair. They also have several other remarkable characteristics, such as flexibility in surface functionality, superior mechanical properties such as stiffness and tensile strength, their capacity to be formed into a variety of shapes, and the fact that they can be produced from a wide range of organic and inorganic polymers and ceramics. These outstanding properties make polymer nanofibers the optimal candidates for providing significant improvements in current technology and for opening the door to novel applications in many research areas. The present review presents a comprehensive summary of the existing solution and melts electrospinning technologies and the effects of parameters on the electrospinning process and nanofiber morphology.

Abstract:<p>Electrospinning, considered as a low-cost and straightforward approach, attracts tremendous attention because nanofibrous materials with functional properties prepared by it can be widely applied in numerous fields, including rechargeable batteries, filtration, and distillation. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of the latest advances in developing this unique technique, which starts with a brief introduction of the advantages of electrospinning and highlights ongoing research activities, followed by its principles and progress. Afterward, the corresponding properties of electrospun nanofibers are discussed. A future vision regarding challenges and perspectives in this area is proposed at the end. It is believed that this review would provide an extensive and comprehensive reference to utilize this advanced technique to generate novel nanofibers performing in high demanding areas.</p>

Abstract:Nanofibers have been developed rapidly owing to their novel properties and wide applications. Scalable manufacturing of nanofibers is important for future applications. This paper provides a brief review on current research activities dealing with the synthesis of nanofibers by solution spinning methods, including electrospinning, blowspinning, centrifugal spinning, and drawspinning. Among these methods, electrospinning is the most widely studied and it allows the production of fibers with the smallest average diameters among the four technologies. Blowspinning and centrifugal spinning possess the highest productivity among the spinning techniques owing to their high efficient driving force. Drawspinning is suitable for producing ultra-long single nanofiber or nanofiber mesh, although it presents the lowest productivity among these methods. In addition, this paper describes some scalable applications of nanofibers in various areas, including filters, flexible electronics, and compressive ceramic thermal insulators.

Abstract:With the rapid development of human technology, we are continuously facing new problems and challenges. On the one hand are the limited natural resources, and on the other hand are the increasing demands for convenient lifestyle. It is not a good idea to sacrifice one aspect to satisfy the other, but we should seek a balance between sustainable development and the comfortable living concept. Thus, it becomes a very crucial task to explore the low-cost, large-scale, and environmentally friendly fabrication methods for wide applications. Electrospinning is a top-down method in which polymeric or melt components are drawn out from a solution system onto a collector by electrostatic force. In comparison with other methods, including drawing, template synthesis, chemical vapor deposition, and so on, electrospinning offers some attractive features. One of the most important advantages is its industrial scalability, which makes it possible to directly transfer the results from laboratory research to the industry. In general, the unique advantages of electrospun nanostructures, including high spatial interconnectivity, high porosity, and large surface-to-volume ratio, make it a promising fabrication method in a wide range of applications. Abstract:Electrospinning provides a simple and versatile method for generating ultrathin fibers from a rich variety of materials that include polymers, composites, and ceramics. This article presents an overview of this technique, with focus on progress achieved in the last three years. After a brief description of the setups for electrospinning, we choose to concentrate on the mechanisms and theoretical models that have been developed for electrospinning, as well as the ability to control the diameter, morphology, composition, secondary structure, and spatial alignment of electrospun nanofibers. In addition, we highlight some potential applications associated with the remarkable features of electrospun nanofibers. Our discussion is concluded with some personal perspectives on the future directions in which this wonderful technique could be pursued. Current research activities on the electrospinning of nanofibers (see Figure, right) are comprehensively reviewed. After a brief discussion of setups (see Figure, left), the mechanisms and theoretical models for electrospinning are presented, followed by approaches for controlling the diameter, morphology, composition, secondary structure, and spatial alignment. Some potential applications of the remarkable features of electrospun fibers are also highlighted.

Abstract:Over the past decade, there has been a tremendous increase in the demand for polymeric nanofibres which are promising candidates for various applications including tissue engineering, protective clothing, filtration and sensors. To address thisdemand, researchers have turned to the development of various techniques such as electrospinning, meltblowing, bicomponent spinning, forcespinning and flash-spinning for the fabrication of polymeric nanofibres. However, electrospinning is the widely used technique for the fabrication of continuous nanofibres. The ability to fabricate nanofibrous assemblies of various materials (such as polymers, ceramics and metals) with possible control of the fibre fineness, surface morphology, orientation and cross-sectional configuration, gives electrospinning an edge over other processes. Although several researches have been done in electrospinning, understanding some of the other processes is still in infancy. In this perspective article, we summarize the fundamentals of various techniques for the fabrication of nanofibres. This paper also highlights a gamut of recent advances in the techniques for nanofibre fabrication.

Abstract:Electrospinning is used to fabricate microscale to nanoscale materials from polymeric solutions based on electrohydrodynamics. Material modifications are achieved through physical and chemical processes, producing diverse material architectures, from laboratory to industrial scales, for conventional and emerging applications. This Primer explains electrospinning technology, encompassing principles, methodologies, equipment, materials, applications, scalability and optimization. The article begins by elucidating the working principles, providing an overview of electrospinning methods and process parameters at laboratory and industrial scales, and discussing emerging equipment. Methods are described for tailoring the composition, architecture and properties of electrospun fibres and fibre assemblies. The versatility of these properties makes electrospun materials suitable for diverse applications spanning environmental, energy and medical applications, textiles, wearables, agriculture and advanced materials. The Primer concludes by discussing the constraints of current electrospinning techniques and offers a perspective on the field's potential future trajectory.

Abstract:Nanofibers have received extensive attention in the fields of biomedicine, energy catalysis, environmental sciences, and filtration owing to their high specific surface area and controllable porosity. Electrospinning and centrifugal spinning are the two most effective methods for fabricating nanofibers. However, the low preparation efficiency of electrospinning limits the use of that technology in the large-scale production of nanofibers. The morphology of nanofibers prepared by centrifugal spinning is slightly inferior to electrospinning. Centrifugal electrospinning has great industrial application potential. It is a new method for fabricating nanofibers formed by combining centrifugal and electrostatic forces. It can efficiently fabricate nanofibers with good alignment. In particular, the use of polymer melt as the spinning precursor for centrifugal electrospinning can effectively address the problem of solvent residue in the fiber. In this review, the working principle and device used for centrifugal electrospinning is introduced, the influence of different components of the spinning device on the spinning process is discussed, and the effects of spinning parameters on fiber properties are explained. Then, some applications of nanofibers fabricated are described by centrifugal electrospinning in various areas, including energy, biomedicine, and filtration. Finally, the challenges of centrifugal electrospinning are summarized, and a perspective on future research is provided.

Abstract:Electrospinning (e-spinning) is famous for the construction and production of ultrafine and continuous micro-/nanofibers. Then, the alignment of electrospun (e-spun) nanofibers becomes one of the most valuable research topics. Because aligned fibers have more advantages over random fibers, such as better mechanical properties, faster charge transport, more regular spatial structure, etc. This review summarizes various electrospinning techniques of fabricating aligned e-spun nanofibers, such as early conventional methods, near-field e-spinning, and three-dimensional (3D) printing e-spinning. Among them, four auxiliary preparation methods (e.g., auxiliary solid template, auxiliary liquid, auxiliary electromagnetic field and auxiliary airflow), two collection modes (static and dynamic collection), and the controllability of near-field e-spinning and 3D printing e-spinning are highlighted. The representative applications depending on aligned nanofibers are classified and briefly introduced, emphasizing in the fields of 1D applications (e.g., field-effect transistor, nanochannel and guidance carrier), 2D applications (e.g., platform for gas detection, filter, and electrode materials storage), and 3D applications (e.g., bioengineering, supercapacitor, and nanogenerator). At last, the challenges and prospects are addressed.

Abstract:Electrospinning is one of the most accessed nanofabrication techniques during the last three decades, attributed to its viability for the mass production of continuous nanofibers with superior properties from a variety of polymers and polymeric composites. Large investments from various sectors have pushed the development of electrospinning industrial setups capable of producing nanofibers in millions of kilograms per year for several practical applications. Herein, the lessons learned over three decades of research, innovations, and designs on electrospinning products are discussed in detail. The historical developments, engineering, and future opportunities of electrospun nanofibers (ESNFs) are critically addressed. The laboratory-to-industry transition gaps for electrospinning technology and ESNFs products, the potential of electrospun nanostructured materials for various applications, and academia-industry comparison are comprehensively analyzed. The current challenges and future trends regarding the use of this technology to fabricate promising nano/macro-products are critically demonstrated. We show that future research on electrospinning should focus on theoretical and technological developments to achieve better maneuverability during large-scale fiber formation, redesigning the electrospinning process around decarbonizing the materials processing to align with the sustainability agenda and the integration of electrospinning technology with the tools of intelligent manufacturing and IR 4.0.

Abstract:This review article forces on discussing the differences and relationships of three nanofiber technologies—electrospinning, centrifugal spinning, and electro‐centrifugal spinning. It mainly summarizes the existing devices and crucial processing parameters. The electro‐centrifugal spinning combines the strengths of electrospinning and centrifugal spinning, showing potentials in processing elegant nanofibers in large scale. Nanofiber‐based products are widely used in the fields of public health, air/water filtration, energy storage, etc. The demand for nonwoven products is rapidly increasing especially after COVID‐19 pandemic. Electrospinning is the most popular technology to produce nanofiber‐based products from various kinds of materials in bench and commercial scales. While centrifugal spinning and electro‐centrifugal spinning are considered to be the other two well‐known technologies to fabricate nanofibers. However, their developments are restricted mainly due to the unnormalized spinning devices and spinning principles. High solution concentration and high production efficiency are the two main strengths of centrifugal spinning, but beaded fibers can be formed easily due to air perturbation or device vibration. Electro‐centrifugal spinning is formed by introducing a high voltage electrostatic field into the centrifugal spinning system, which suppresses the formation of beaded fibers and results in producing elegant nanofibers. It is believed that electrospinning can be replaced by electro‐centrifugal spinning in some specific application areas. This article gives an overview on the existing devices and the crucial processing parameters of these nanofiber technologies, also constructive suggestions are proposed to facilitate the development of centrifugal and electro‐centrifugal spinning.

Abstract:Electrospinning can produce nanofibers with extremely high surface-to-volume ratio and well tunable properties. The technique has been widely used in different disciplines. To fabricate fibers with required properties, parameters of fabrication should be well controlled and adjusted according to specific applications. Modification of electrospinning devices to align fibers in highly ordered architectures could improve their functions. Enhanced efficiency have also been obtained through the upscaling modification of spinnerets. With the outstanding efficiency, electrospinning has exhibited huge potentials to construct various nanostructures, such as artificial vessel, membrane for desalination and so on.

Abstract:Fabrication technologies based on electro-hydrodynamic processes have been extensively studied in the past decades. Near-field electrospinning (NFES), based on a stable cone-jet mode, is widely used to fabricate micro- and nano-scale fibrous structures for a variety of applications. However, previous reviews have given limited attention to the capabilities of NFES to fabricate 2D and 3D structures. This review introduces four key metrics of NFES capabilities, i.e., fidelity, resolution, response, and aspect ratio, to evaluate and summarize the advances of NFES technology. Specifically, the fundamental theories of the electro-hydrodynamic process are discussed to understand the effect of operating parameters on the metrics of NFES capabilities. Then, the methods to improve the metrics of NFES capabilities are summarized. Furthermore, the applications of NFES technology are reviewed by highlighting the functionality of each metric of the capabilities. Finally, the achievements and existing gaps in NFES technology are discussed to offer insights into future directions in the field.
