Abstract:The energy levels of CD3F+(X∼2E) have been measured up to 1400 cm−1 above the ground vibrational state using the one-photon zero-kinetic energy photoelectron (ZEKE) spectroscopic method. The spin-vibronic energy levels have also been calculated using an ab initio diabatic model. The potential energy surfaces of CD3F+ were calculated from those of CH3F+ using a transformation of the normal coordinates. The calculations show that tunneling splittings of vibrational energy levels exist due to the three equivalent wells caused by the linear-plus-strong quadratic Jahn–Teller coupling. The splittings are smaller than those in CH3F+. The experimental spectrum was assigned based on the fundamental vibrational modes calculated at the energy minimum. The calculated spin-vibronic energy levels are in good agreement with the experimental data. The tunneling splitting pairs for the fundamental vibrations related to the CD3 rock were observed. The first adiabatic ionization energy was determined as 101 534 ± 3 cm−1 or 12.5886 ± 0.0004 eV.

Abstract:On the basis of the nonequilibrium Green's function theory and perturbation theory, an IETS formalism is developed. In the formalism, the nonequilibrium Green's function of a molecular junction is separated into contributions from the elastic and inelastic electron tunneling, respectively. And IETS is directly related to the electron-vibrational coupling constant. The formalism provides insights into the mechanism of active vibrational modes for IETS. By applying the Gaussian 03 and DUSHIN programs to our formalism, the IETS of molecular Junctions of oligo (phenylene vinylene) and oligo (phenylene ethynylene) are calculated, and good agreement between the calculation results and experimental measurements is observed.
Full-dimensional (12D) variational vibrational states of CH$_4\cdot$F$^-$: interplay of anharmonicity and tunneling

Abstract:The complex of a methane molecule and a fluoride anion represents a 12-dimensional (12D), four-well vibrational problem with multiple large-amplitude motions, which has challenged the quantum dynamics community for years. The present work reports vibrational band origins and tunneling splittings obtained in a full-dimensional variational vibrational computation using the GENIUSH program and the Smolyak quadrature scheme. The converged 12D vibrational band origins and tunneling splittings confirm complementary aspects of the earlier full- and reduced-dimensionality studies: (1) the tunneling splittings are smaller than 0.02 cm$^{-1}$; (2) a single-well treatment is not sufficient (except perhaps the zero-point vibration) due to a significant anharmonicity over the wells; and thus, (3) a full-dimensional treatment appears to be necessary. The present computations extend to a higher energy range than earlier work, show that the tunneling splittings increase upon vibrational excitation of the complex, and indicate non-negligible `heavy-atom' tunneling.

High-Resolution Tunneling Spectroscopy of Fractional Quantum Hall States

Abstract:Strong interaction among electrons in two-dimensional systems in the presence of high magnetic fields gives rise to fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states that host quasi-particles with fractional charge and statistics. We perform high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy of FQH states in ultra-clean Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene (BLG) devices. Spectroscopy of FQH states shows sharp excitations in tunneling experiments that have been predicted for electron fractionalizing into bound states of quasi-particles. From our measurements and their comparison to theoretical calculations, we find energy gaps for candidate non-abelian FQH states that are larger by a factor of 5 than other related systems, making BLG an ideal setting for the manipulation of these novel quasi-particles and for the creation of a topological quantum bit. Our STM experiment also reveals previously undiscovered states in such ultra-clean samples.

Abstract:Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) vibronic spectroscopy, which has provided submolecular insights into electron-vibration (vibronic) coupling, faces challenges when probing the pivotal low-frequency vibronic excitations. Because of eigenstate broadening on solid substrates, resolving low-frequency vibronic states demands strong decoupling. This work designs a type II band alignment in STM junction to achieve effective charge-transfer state decoupling. This strategy enables the successful identification of the lowest-frequency Hg(ω1) (Raman-active Hg mode) vibronic excitation within single C60 molecules, which, despite being notably pronounced in electron transport of C60 single-molecule transistors, has remained hidden at submolecular level. Our results show that the observed Hg(ω1) excitation is "anchored" to all molecules, irrespective of local geometry, challenging common understanding of structural definition of vibronic excitation governed by Franck-Condon principle. Density functional theory calculations reveal existence of molecule-substrate interfacial charge-transfer dipole, which, although overlooked previously, drives the dominant Hg(ω1) excitation. This charge-transfer dipole is not specific but must be general at interfaces, influencing vibronic coupling in charge transport.
The valence and Rydberg states of difluoromethane: A combined experimental vacuum ultraviolet spectrum absorption and theoretical study by ab initio configuration interaction and density functional computations

Abstract:A new synchrotron study for CH$_2$F$_2$ from has been combined with earlier data. The onset of absorption, band I and also band IV, is resolved into broad vibrational peaks, which contrast with the continuous absorption previously claimed. A new theoretical analysis, using a combination of time dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations and complete active space self-consistent field, leads to a major new interpretation. Adiabatic excitation energies (AEEs) and vertical excitation energies, evaluated by these methods, are used to interpret the spectra in unprecedented detail using theoretical vibronic analysis. This includes both Franck-Condon (FC) and Herzberg-Teller (HT) effects on cold and hot bands. These results lead to the re-assignment of several known excited states and the identification of new ones. The lowest calculated AEE sequence for singlet states is 1$^1$B$_1$ $\sim$ 1$^1$A$_2$ < 2$^1$B$_1$ < 1$^1$A$_1$ < 2$^1$A$_1$ < 1$^1$B$_2$ < 3$^1$A$_1$ < 3$^1$B$_1$. These, together with calculated higher energy states, give a satisfactory account of the principal maxima observed in the VUV spectrum. Basis sets up to quadruple zeta valence with extensive polarization are used. The diffuse functions within this type of basis generate both valence and low-lying Rydberg excited states. The optimum position for the site of further diffuse functions in the calculations of Rydberg states is shown to lie on the H-atoms. The routine choice on the F-atoms is shown to be inadequate for both CHF$_3$ and CH$_2$F$_2$. The lowest excitation energy region has mixed valence and Rydberg character. TDDFT calculations show that the unusual structure of the onset arises from the near degeneracy of 1$^1$B$_1$ and 1$^1$A$_2$ valence states, which mix in symmetric and antisymmetric combinations.

Abstract:The detection of vibrational excitations of individual molecules on surfaces by scanning tunneling spectroscopy does not obey strict selection rules but rather propensity rules. The experimental verification of these is challenging because it requires the independent variation of specific parameters, such as the electronic structure, while keeping the vibrational modes the same. Here, we make use of the versatile self-assembled structures of Fe-tetra-pyridyl-porphyrin molecules on a Au(111) surface. These exhibit different energy-level alignments of the frontier molecular orbitals, thus allowing the correlation of electronic structure and detection of vibrations. We identify up to seven vibrational modes in the tunneling spectra of the molecules in some of the arrangements, whereas we observe none in other structures. We find that the presence of vibrational excitations and their distribution along the molecule correlates with the observation of energetically low-lying molecular states. This correlation allows to explain the different numbers of vibrational signatures for molecules embedded within different structures as well as the bias asymmetry of the vibrational intensities within an individual molecule. Our observations are in agreement with a resonant enhancement of vibrations by the virtual excitation of electronic states.

Abstract:The nonlinear interaction of x-rays with matter is at the heart of understanding and controlling ultrafast molecular dynamics from an atom-specific viewpoint, providing new scientific and analytical opportunities to explore the structure and dynamics of small quantum systems. At increasingly high x-ray intensity, the sensitivity of ultrashort x-ray pulses to specific electronic states and emerging short-lived transient intermediates is of particular relevance for our understanding of fundamental multi-photon absorption processes. In this work, intense x-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) pulses at the European XFEL (EuXFEL) are combined with a gas cell and grating spectrometer for a high-intensity transmission spectroscopy study of multiphoton-induced ultrafast molecular fragmentation dynamics in CF$_4$. This approach unlocks the direct intra-pulse observation of transient fragments, including neutral atoms, by their characteristic absorption lines in the transmitted broad-band x-ray spectrum. The dynamics with and without initially producing fluorine K-shell holes are studied by tuning the central photon energy. The absorption spectra are measured at different FEL intensities to observe nonlinear effects. Transient isolated fluorine atoms and ions are spectroscopically recorded within the ultrashort pulse duration of few tens of femtoseconds. An isosbestic point that signifies the correlated transition between intact neutral CF$_4$ molecules and charged atomic fragments is observed near the fluorine K-edge. The dissociation dynamics and the multiphoton absorption-induced dynamics encoded in the spectra are theoretically interpreted. Overall, this study demonstrates the potential of high-intensity x-ray transmission spectroscopy to study ultrafast molecular dynamics with sensitivity to specific intermediate species and their electronic structure.

Abstract:Correlation of lattice vibrational properties with local atomic configurations in materials is essential for elucidating functionalities that involve phonon transport in solids. Recent developments in vibrational spectroscopy in a scanning transmission electron microscope have enabled direct measurements of local phonon modes at defects and interfaces by combining high spatial and energy resolution. However, pushing the ultimate limit of vibrational spectroscopy in a scanning transmission electron microscope to reveal the impact of chemical bonding on local phonon modes requires extreme sensitivity of the experiment at the chemical-bond level. Here we demonstrate that, with improved instrument stability and sensitivity, the specific vibrational signals of the same substitutional impurity and the neighbouring carbon atoms in monolayer graphene with different chemical-bonding configurations are clearly resolved, complementary with density functional theory calculations. The present work opens the door to the direct observation of local phonon modes with chemical-bonding sensitivity, and provides more insights into the defect-induced physics in graphene.

Abstract:We study the tunneling dynamics of a Bose–Fermi superfluid mixture where bosons are confined in a double-well potential and fermions in a harmonic potential symmetrically positioned at the center of the double-well. By focusing on the deep Bose–Einstein condensate side of the inter-fermion Feshbach resonance where the fermions can be well described as molecular bosons, we employ a mean-field method and numerically investigate the dynamical evolution of bosons under different parameters and initial conditions. We find that the interaction with background fermions can enrich the tunneling dynamics of the bosons, and specifically, lead to a re-entrant macroscopic quantum self-trapping state by varying different parameters. Our results can be observed in Bose–Fermi superfluid mixture by tuning interactions via Feshbach resonance and confinement-induced resonance.

Abstract:A scanning tunneling microscope is used to generate the electroluminescence of phthalocyanine molecules deposited on NaCl/Ag(111). Photon spectra reveal an intense emission line at 1.9 eV that corresponds to the fluorescence of the molecules, and a series of weaker red-shifted lines. Based on a comparison with Raman spectra acquired on macroscopic molecular crystals, these spectroscopic features can be associated to the vibrational modes of the molecules and provide a detailed chemical fingerprint of the probed species. Maps of the vibronic features reveal sub- molecularly-resolved structures whose patterns are related to the symmetry of the probed vibrational modes.

Abstract:Spectroscopy is a crucial laboratory technique for understanding quantum systems through their interactions with the electromagnetic radiation. Particularly, spectroscopy is capable of revealing the physical structure of molecules, leading to the development of the maser-the forerunner of the laser. However, real-world applications of molecular spectroscopy are mostly confined to equilibrium states, due to computational and technological constraints; a potential breakthrough can be achieved by utilizing the emerging technology of quantum simulation. Here we experimentally demonstrate through a toy model, a superconducting quantum simulator capable of generating molecular spectra for both equilibrium and non-equilibrium states, reliably producing the vibronic structure of diatomic molecules. Furthermore, our quantum simulator is applicable not only to molecules with a wide range of electronic-vibronic coupling strength, characterized by the Huang-Rhys parameter, but also to molecular spectra not readily accessible under normal laboratory conditions. These results point to a new direction for predicting and understanding molecular spectroscopy, exploiting the power of quantum simulation.

Abstract:The oscillation of tunnel splitting in Fe 8 molecular clusters is obtained as a function of magnetic field applied along the hard axis by means of the instanton method with both effective potential field description of quantum spin system and the semiclassical treatment. The theoretical splittings of the instanton method are compared with the numerical result by diagonalization of the spin Hamilton operator and experimental observations.

Abstract:The transition state governs how chemical bonds form and cleave during a chemical reaction and its direct characterization is a long-standing challenge in physical chemistry. Transition state spectroscopy experiments based on negative-ion photodetachment provide a direct probe of the vibrational structure and metastable resonances that are characteristic of the reactive surface. Dynamical resonances are extremely sensitive to the topography of the reactive surface and provide an exceptional point of comparison with theory. Here we study the seven-atom F + CH 3 OH → HF + CH 3 O reaction using slow photoelectron velocity-map imaging spectroscopy of cryocooled CH 3 OHF − anions. These measurements reveal spectral features associated with a manifold of vibrational Feshbach resonances and bound states supported by the post-transition state potential well. Quantum dynamical calculations yield excellent agreement with the experimental results, allow the assignment of spectral structure and demonstrate that the key dynamics of complex bimolecular reactions can be captured with a relatively simple theoretical framework.
Theoretical studies on spin-vibronic spectra of CH3O((XE)-E-2)

Abstract:We made an ab initio study of the spin-vibronic couplings in CH3O ((XE)-E-2) based on diabatic model. The diabatic potential energy curves were calculated at the level of CASPT2/cc-pvtz. The calculated spin-vibronic energy levels are compared with the experimental data, which indicates that the present calculation has higher accuracy than the previously reported ones.

Abstract:The one-color resonant two -photon ionization technique is employed to study jetcooled van der Waals(vdW) complex sigma-xylene-N-2 through the S-0 - S-1 transition around the band. The spectra obtained exhibit rich information about the complex intermolecular vdW vibrational modes. We have tentatively assigned all the observed spectral features. The structure of the complex has been obtained by calculation of the minimum energy structure.
