Abstract:In the present work, talc (a low-cost clay) encapsulated salts alginate (TAL) beads were synthesized by cross-linking with lanthanum ion and tested for phosphate adsorption. Multiple methods were applied for the characterization of composites. The combined effect of talc and lanthanum improved phosphate removal performance of TAL beads. Factors such as talc content, La3+ concentration, adsorbent dosage, pH, co-existing ions (Cl−, NO3− and SO42−) were studied in batch experiments. The optimized TAL-7 beads exhibited satisfactory selectivity towards phosphate in the coexistence of competing anions and could remain efficient phosphate removal in the pH range of 4–6. The phosphate removal efficiency reached to 95% with a maximum uptake of 16.4 mg P/g obtained at the optimal pH 4. Further experiments suggested that Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model could well describe the phosphate adsorption process of TAL-7 beads. Moreover, TAL-7 beads exhibited superior phosphate fixation performance in the long-term experiment. The results from adsorption experiment and characterization analysis demonstrated that TAL-7 beads could be a cost-effective and promising biosorbent for phosphate adsorption and fixation in the aqueous environment.

Abstract:In this study, a novel nano-La(OH)3/porous carbon composites derived from La alginate xerogel with egg-box structure had been successfully synthesized by a gradient heat treatment in nitrogen atmosphere. This facile fabrication strategy can be easily employed to considerably encapsulate La(OH)3 nanoparticles uniformly into the porous carbon matrix derived from the alginate macromolecule framework. The optimized sample, labeled as LS-550(N), exhibited extremely high phosphate uptake and great selectivity. The adsorption kinetic process dramatically followed pseudo-second-order model. The Langmuir model fitted maximum equilibrium adsorption capacity is 133.58 mg·g-1. The phosphate adsorption mechanisms could be consist of electrostatic interaction, complexation and ligand exchange interaction on the surface of LS-550(N). The prominent practical applicability of LS-550(N) in the regeneration test suggests that the LS-550(N) could be a potential adsorption candidate for the decontamination of phosphate-containing natural water bodies.

Abstract:Attapulgite has rarely been used in lanthanum-based alginate hydrogel development for phosphate elimination. The associated research gaps regarding green fabrication, eco-friendly application, and mechanical strength improvement are worthy of systematic investigation. Herein, a newly designed lanthanum-crosslinked attapulgite/sodium alginate (La-ATP/SA) hydrogel adsorbent was prepared by an eco-friendly facile cross-linking method. The results showed that the introduction of attapulgite into sodium alginate enhanced the mechanical strength of La-ATP/SA beads. SEM images, TG tests, and stability assessment tests further verified the reinforced structure. Batch experiments demonstrated that the adsorption information was better described by the Freundlich isotherm equation and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, harvesting more than 50% phosphate removal of the total amount within 120 min, proving that chemical adsorption dominated the sorption process. The maximum phosphate sorption capacity was 24.57 mg/g and stable phosphate removal was obtained in the presence of the commonly existing anions. The adsorption behavior was pH-dependent and efficient phosphate uptake was maintained over a wide pH range (3–9). The dominant mechanism for phosphate removal of La-ATP/SA was the inner-sphere complex mechanism. Small spherical macromolecular hydrogels can be easily recollected and display good reusability after five cycles. The results of this study demonstrate that the La-ATP/SA hydrogel is a promising sustainable candidate for phosphate control.

Abstract:Phosphorus exceeding the standard will destroy the ecological environment of the freshwater resources and endanger the survival of aquatic animals. Due to the intrinsic complexation between La(III) and alginate, in this study, lanthanum hydroxide was first prepared from lanthanum nitrate, the chemical crosslinking agent was replaced by La(III), and cellulose/lanthanum alginate/La(OH) 3 composite microspheres (CSPGs-La) were synthesized using polyethyleneimine (PEI) as a crosslinking agent through the emulsification process in one pot. In comparison, the adsorption capacity of 80 mg L −1 PO 4 3− treated with CSPGs-La, CSPGs-Ech (Samples where the chemical crosslinking agent was not replaced by La(III)) and La(OH) 3 was 159.5 mg g −1 , 57.51 mg g −1 and 137.4 mg g −1 , respectively. CSPGs-La has good swelling performance, unique three-dimensional structure and mass transfer efficiency, which are the important reasons for its strong ability to capture phosphate. In the presence of coexisting anions, CSPGs-La can still accurately adsorb PO 4 3− , showing good adsorption selectivity. Intra-surface spherical complexation and electrostatic adsorption play an important role. When the dose of CSPGs-La is 1.35 g L −1 , the phosphorus pollutants in the actual domestic sewage can be reduced to 10 μg L −1 below. After five adsorption cycles, the retention rate of phosphorus removal performance is 87.7 %. This study provides a green, easy to implement, and promising solution for the preparation of efficient and selective phosphorus removal adsorbent.

Abstract:Developing phosphorus removal adsorbents with high adsorption performance and excellent structural stability remains a challenge. Herein, a chitosan (CS) - amidated lignin (AL) gel-bead adsorbent with high efficiency in immobilizing lanthanum hydroxide (La(OH)3) was fabricated via an in situ precipitation and freeze-drying strategy (abbreviated as La@ALCSx). The abundant hydroxyl and amino groups in CS promoted excellent loading of La(OH)3 on the surface and inside of the adsorbent. The introduction of lignin enhanced the structural stability of the beads along with the mass transfer efficiency. Owing to the porous structure and high La utilization, the adsorption capacity of La@ALCS2 reached 130.52 mg P g-1. Intra-sphere complexation of La(OH)3 with phosphate resulted in high adsorption selectivity of La@ALCS2. Moreover, the millimeter-sized of La@ALCS2 has favourable recoverability and maintains high adsorption performance after five adsorption-desorption cycles. Characterization analysis indicated that electrostatic attraction and ligand exchange were the main adsorption mechanisms. The excellent phosphorus removal efficiency, separation efficiency and recyclability of La@ALCSx provide a viable solution for the remediation of phosphate contaminated waters.

Abstract:Lanthanum (La)-based nanoparticles (NPs) are promising candidates for phosphate removal owing to their inherently high affinity towards phosphate. However, significant challenges remain to be addressed before their practical deployment, especially the problems associated with their aggregation. Herein, we fabricated a high-efficient sorbent for phosphate removal through in-situ synthesizing La(OH)3 NPs on a natural support, bacterial cellulose (BC), which is pre-modified with polyethyleneimine. The resultant La(OH)3 NPs-immobilized BC with different La contents (BPLa-X) exhibited a highly fibrous porous structure, in which BPLa-3 was selected for further phosphate adsorption studies. BPLa-3 demonstrated a high adsorption capacity of 125.5 mg P g−1, and high adsorption selectivity due to the large surface area and abundant exposed active adsorption sites for phosphate. Additionally, BPLa-3 also displayed high reusability and still possessed high adsorption capacity after four consecutive cycles of adsorption-desorption. Therefore, the present adsorbent is believed to be a promising candidate for practical phosphate removal.

Abstract:In pursuit of accessing clean water, the phosphate removal is of great importance for preventing eutrophication toward sustainable ecology. However, effective adsorbents with high capacity, selectivity, and long-term stability for treating phosphate in water still remain desired, which requires further development. Herein, a type of porous La-based adsorbents, which are composed of highly dispersed La(OH)3 on amino-functionalized Caragana korshinskii (CK) nanowires, are designed and fabricated through simple amination and decoration of lemon bars. Specifically, the adsorption to phosphate can be quickly completed within 50 min, and an ultrahigh adsorption capacity of 173.3 mg of P g-1 is realized. Moreover, these composite adsorbents display excellent selectivity and anti-interference ability to phosphate in the presence of common anions (CO3 2-, NO3-, Cl-, and SO4 2-). After four regenerations, there is still a removal rate of 85%. This study underscores an integrated material model for designing advanced structures toward efficient wastewater treatment.
Phosphate Removal from Wastewater by Magnetic Amorphous Lanthanum Silicate Alginate Hydrogel Beads

Abstract:It is of both fundamental and practical importance to develop effective adsorbents for removing phosphate from aqueous solutions continuously. In this study, magnetic amorphous lanthanum silicate alginate hydrogel beads (MALS-B) were prepared and used for phosphate removal. Mesoporous silica materials with highly ordered and hexagonal channel structures were synthesized from natural mineral rectorite (REC) at room temperature. On this basis, amorphous lanthanum silicate (ALS) was synthesized by theone-pot method using a silicon source from REC and a commercial lanthanum source. Further, MALS-B were synthesized from sodium alginate (SA) with ALS and Fe3O4 as the incorporated adsorbable and magnetic nanoparticles via a simple cross-linking method in CaCl2 solution. The synthesized hydrogel beads were characterized by various techniques. ALS and Fe3O4 existed relatively independently in MALS-B, where ALS provided adsorption sites and Fe3O4 provided magnetism. They played a synergistic role in phosphate removal. The saturation magnetization value of MALS-B was 17.38 emu/g, enabling theirfacile separation from aqueous solutions after phosphate adsorption. MALS-B exhibited a preferable adsorption capacity of 40.14 mg P/g for phosphorus compared to other hydrogel beads based on adsorption experiments. More significantly, MALS-B exhibited excellent selectivity for phosphate in aqueous solutions with various interfering ions and possessed a high affinity to phosphate in a wide pH range. MALS-B showed the treatment volume of 480 BV when effluent phosphate concentration was below 0.5 mg/L in fixed-bed column adsorption. The adsorption mechanism was also revealed. Our work demonstrates that MALS-B can serve as a promising adsorbent for continuous phosphate adsorption.

Hierarchical alginate biopolymer papers produced via lanthanide ion coordination

Abstract:Inspired by the heterogeneous architectures of biological composites, mimicking the hierarchical structure of nacre is a powerful strategy to construct high-performance materials. This paper presents a lightweight and nacre-like hierarchical paper which was fabricated via lanthanide ion coordination. Sodium alginate (SA) biopolymers and lanthanide ions (Nd3+, Gd3+, Ce3+ and Yb3+) were used as ideal building blocks and connection points, respectively. SA biopolymers and lanthanide ions rapidly self-assembled into an aligned hydrogel. The synthesized hydrogel was subsequently dried to form layered alginate-based papers. The formation mechanism of the layered paper was investigated and demonstrated that lanthanide ion coordination can produce the hierarchical structure. The as-prepared layered SA-Nd(III) nanopaper exhibited a high strength of 124.2 +/- 5.2 MPa, toughness of 8.2 +/- 0.4 MJ m(-3), and Young's modulus of 5.2 +/- 0.2 GPa, as well as excellent resistance to solvents. Owing to their outstanding mechanical properties and easy and fast fabrication, the layered SA-Nd(III) papers demonstrated a potential application in the fields of biomaterials. This new strategy based on lanthanide ion coordination, can also be used to construct integrated, high-performance, and biopolymer materials.

Abstract:Polymer binders that combine active materials with conductive agents have played a critical role in maintaining the structural integrity of phosphorus anodes with a huge volume change upon sodiation/desodiation. Herein, the role of binders on the structural/chemical stability of phosphorus/carbon anode is spectroscopically uncovered through unexpected mechanism. Surprisingly, the selection of different binders is found to determine the oxidation degree of active phosphorus in various electrodes, which correlate well with their electrochemical properties. At a high oxidation degree, the electrode applying a conventional poly(vinylidene difluoride) binder displays the worst electrochemical properties, while the electrode using a sodium alginate binder delivers the best electrochemical performance (a highly reversible capacity of 1064 mAh g−1 with a 90.1% capacity retention at 800 mA g−1 after 200 cycles and an outstanding rate capability of 401 mAh g−1 at 8000 mA g−1) for its negligible oxidation. Additionally, the emergence/decomposition of surface intermediates, including (PO2)3− and (PO4)3− species, are observed in the discharging/charging processes via the ex situ P K‐edge X‐ray absorption spectroscopies. This novel discovery of the unique role of binders in phosphorus anodes, not only provides an opportunity to ameliorate their electrochemical properties, but also enables their practical applications in high‐energy sodium‐ion batteries.
Fluoride Removal by Lanthanum Alginate Bead: Adsorbent Characterization and Adsorption Mechanism

Abstract:Lanthanum alginate bead is a new, highly active adsorbent. In the present study, we investigated its adsorption performance and its adsorption mechanism. The adsorption isotherm for fluoride onto lanthanum alginate bead fits the Langmuir model well, and the maximum adsorption capacity is 197.2 mg·g−1. X-ray diffraction shows the amorphous nature of lanthanum alginate bead, which allows for better accessibility to fluoride and thus better activity. Infrared spectra of lanthanum alginate bead before and after adsorption confirm its stable skeletal structure. Scanning electron microscopy shows that the dense surface structure of the adsorbent appear cracks after adsorption. The adsorption mechanism of lanthanum alginate bead is considered as an ion exchange between F− and Cl− or OH−, as verified from the adsorbent and the solution by pH effect, energy dispersive X-ray, and ion chromatography.

Abstract:Lanthanum (La)-based adsorbents have gained increasing attentions because of their intriguing characteristic for phosphate removal. This study developed a recyclable granular adsorbent-La modified bio-ceramisite (La@BC) through coprecipitation method and use it to remove phosphate from wastewater. Batch and column experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance of La@BC. The results showed that La@BC had a high phosphate adsorption capacity (136 mg P/g La), the adsorption process can be well described by Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. In addition, La@BC had a widely applicable pH range of 4-12, well selective adsorption performance in the presence of coexisting ions (Cl-, NO3-, HCO3-, and SO42-) and exhibited excellent recoverability and separability in five continuous adsorption-desorption cycles operation. Studying of removal mechanisms indicated that phosphate was successfully adsorbed by La@BC, and La-complex (LaPO4) microprecipitation and electrostatic interaction may play a prominent role in phosphate removal. Column operation shown that La@BC adsorbents were highly efficient for phosphate removal. The all outlet phosphate concentrations were below 0.1 mg/L during a sixty-day monitoring period (inlet phosphate concentration was 1 mg/L). Because of superior removal capacity and good liquid-solid separability, granular La@BC adsorbent can efficiently avoid appreciable problems caused by powder adsorbent, and has a great potential for phosphate control in shallow eutrophic waters.
Synchronous gelation and lanthanum introduction using bentonite/PVA/SA as the matrix for efficient phosphate removal from aqueous media: Adsorptive behavior and mechanism study

Abstract:In this work, bentonite was encapsulated into PVA/SA matrix to fabricate bentonite/PVA/SA aerogel (BPS) using lanthanum (La) as the cross-linking agent. La (III) cross-linking reaction with polymers realized synchronous gelation and lanthanum introduction into the composite, which endowed BPS with efficient phosphate removal performance and convenient separation property. Batch experiments indicated that BPS aerogel could maintain efficient and stable phosphate removal (>95%) within a wide solution pH range (4–10), and well-performed phosphate capturing of BPS at NaCl and seasalt salinity of 0–4% implied its promising application potential in saline environment. Besides, the good fitness of pseudo-second-order kinetic model suggested chemisorption of phosphate on BPS surface, and film diffusion was the primary rate-limiting step. Isotherm study with the preferred fitness of Sips model suggested monolayer adsorption characteristic of BPS at high phosphate concentration, whereas multi-layer coverage of phosphate occurred at low concentration. Maximum experimental adsorption capacity of BPS was detected as ∼28.9 mg P/g, which was competitive among similar adsorbents. In addition, long-term phosphate leakage detection at varied systematic pH suggested the stable binding of phosphate on BPS. The combined characterization analysis illustrated that multiple function including electrostatic attraction, ligand exchange and Lewis acid-base interaction drove the loading of phosphate on BPS surface. Overall results demonstrated certain potential of BPS aerogel as candidate sorbent for phosphate adsorption from complicated aqueous environment.

Abstract:Lanthanum modified compounds and Layered double hydroxides (LDH) are promising adsorbents for phosphate. However, the nano-scale LDH is challenging to separate, and conventional immobilization methods weaken the adsorption performance. With the affinity between metal ions and phosphate, polyvinyl alcohol/metal ions sodium alginate (PS-M−LDH) hydrogel beads for the improvement of phosphate removal were prepared by in-situ crosslinking with different metal ion (M) solutions. Through screening, the PS-M−LDH crosslinked by La (PS-La-LDH) has the preferable phosphate adsorption performance. The phosphate adsorption behavior of PS-La-LDH hydrogel was further investigated. Results showed that the adsorption process of phosphate by PS-La-LDH hydrogel was in accordance with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Freundlich model. The maximum experimental adsorption capacity of PS-La-LDH was 34.2 mg P/g, converting to an equivalent LDH of 91.2 mg P/g LDH, which was 1.6 times of pristine LDH powder (58.0 mg P/g LDH). The removal of phosphate by PS-La-LDH performed well at a wide range of pH 3 ∼ 8. PS-La-LDH showed selective adsorption to phosphate with the existence of competing anions (Cl-, NO3–, and SO42–). The phosphate adsorption by PS-La-LDH hydrogel only reduced 16.57 % when the concentration of SO42– was increased to 2882 mg/L. SEM, XRD, FTIR, and XPS results showed that the electrostatic interaction, ligand exchange, and ion exchange jointly facilitated the adsorption of phosphate.

Abstract:Here we report the preparation of crystallized lanthanide phosphate (LnPO(4)) nanostructures at room temperature on solid substrates by the layer-by-layer adsorption and reaction method comprising repetitive adsorption of lanthanide ions and Subsequent reaction with phosphate ions. Taking the fabrication of LaPO(4), for instance, the morphology of the nanostructured LaPO(4) call be controlled between three-dimensional dandelion-likc nanoarchitectures composing of single-crystalline one-dimensional nanoneedles and one-dimensional nanoneedles lying oil the substrates by tailoring the concentration of the deposition solutions. This fabrication method can be extended to prepare other kinds of crystallized nanostructures of LnPO(4) such as CePO(4) and rare-earth-doped luminescent LaPO(4). The formation of the single-crystalline nanoneedles under such a mild condition originates from the Successive interfacial reaction of lanthanide and phosphate ions and the intrinsic anisotropic growth habit of hexagonal LnPO(4). The present Study is meaningful in developing new methodologies to fabricate single-crystal nanostructures deposited directly on solid Substrates without the requirement of high reaction temperature and tedious procedures.
Fabrication of sodium alginate doped phosphoric acid composite hydrogel and its application of the adsorption of La (III) in wastewater

Abstract:Recycling rare earth ions from wastewater is an important task, as rare earth elements have a wide range of applications and can cause harm to the environment if discharged arbitrarily. In this work, a simple and inexpensive hydroxyethylidene diphosphate-based adsorbent (SA@HEDP) for adsorbing lanthanum was designed and fabricated. The adsorbent SA@HEDP with the surface rich in phosphate and hydroxyl functional groups provided active sites for adsorption of lanthanum. Research on adsorption performance was conducted by testing the amount of HEDP added, the amount of adsorbent used, the effect of initial pH of La (III), adsorption time, and temperature. The results showed that the adsorption capacity of the adsorbent was 158.0 mg/g. Adsorption of La (III) in real wastewater was tested, when the initial concentration of La (III) was 319.2 mg/L, it could be basically all recovered through three adsorption processes. SEM, EDS mapping, XPS, FTIR, and Zeta potential were used to characterize and analyze the mechanism, and mass transfer kinetics was used to analyze the adsorption process of the adsorbent for La (III).
Enhanced phosphate removal from aqueous environments using three-dimensional La-doped carboxylic carbon nanotubes/alginate: Performance and mechanisms

Abstract:The excessive amounts of phosphorus (P) discharged and usage have caused eutrophication and algal blooms, which seriously jeopardize the environment even the human health. In this study, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) served as carriers to develop a lanthanum-based sodium alginate hydrogel (La-CNT-COOH/SA) aimed at efficiently removing phosphate from wastewater. Characterization results confirmed successful deposition of La(OH)3 nanoparticles onto CNT-COOH. The optimal adsorption efficiency of La-CNT-COOH/SA hydrogels occurred at pH 4, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 54.4 mg/g under an initial phosphate concentration of 60 mg/L. Batch experiments demonstrated that La-CNT-COOH/SA performed well across a favorable pH range and exhibited high tolerance to common coexisting ions during phosphate adsorption. Adsorption isotherms indicated a dominance of both physical and chemical mechanisms in phosphate removal by La-CNT-COOH/SA. At elevated phosphate concentrations, the adsorption process followed quasi-second-order kinetics, primarily driven by chemical adsorption. Multi-instrument characterization emphasized that the substantial loading of La(OH)3 on CNT-COOH significantly contributed to adsorption, alongside crosslinked lanthanum ions on sodium alginate and abundant hydroxyl groups. Mechanisms of adsorption by La-CNT-COOH/SA encompassed electrostatic interactions, surface precipitation, and in-sphere complexation (La-O-P). These findings on fabrication, properties, and adsorption mechanisms of the phosphate-removal hydrogel lay a theoretical foundation for applying biomass-based materials in large-scale remediation practices.

Abstract:Addressing the sustained environmental issues arising from eutrophication necessitates the regulation of excessive phosphorus in aquatic ecosystems. This study explores the controlled synthesis of a lanthanum hydroxide, denoted as Sur-C n -La(OH) 3 (where n = 12–18), mediated by surfactants with different alkyl chain lengths for enhanced phosphorous capture in water. Sur-C 18 -La(OH) 3 exhibits a 46 % increase in phosphate adsorption capacity (308.9 mg/g) compared to La(OH) 3 (210.8 mg/g), remarkably surpassing the majority of reported La-based adsorbents (∼100–200 mg/g). The adsorption kinetics were also enhanced with the pseudo-second-order constant (k 2 ) increasing by nearly three times (from 0.029 to 0.071 g/(mg·min)). The specific surface area of Sur-C 18 -La(OH) 3 reached up to 57.43 m 2 /g compared with that of La(OH) 3 (30.74 m 2 /g). Owing to the alteration of spatial hindrance and particle interactions, forming a more dispersed structure tuning by the surfactant C 18 TAB. The adsorption mechanism was mainly governed by an inner-sphere complexation between lanthanum and phosphate. Sur-C 18 -La(OH) 3 also demonstrates outstanding adsorption selectivity and reusability. The findings provide valuable insights for water quality management and present a potential solution for sustainable resource utilization.

Abstract:Herein, a recyclable nucleating agent for poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) was fabricated via taking advantage of grafting biodegradable poly(3-hydroxybutyrate)-diol onto the surface of magnetic nanoparticles (ferroferric oxide, Fe3O4). Its effectiveness in improving crystallinity, gas barriers, thermal, and mechanical performance of PLLA are investigated. Core-shell structure, which is the combination of PHB-diol (shell) and magnetic nanoparticle (core), are detected by means of transmission electron microscope. Differential scanning calorimeter results suggest Fe3O4@SiO2-PHB (MM) nanoparticles exert great potential in accelerating the crystallization rate. Besides, with the increment of crystallinity for PLLA matrix, oxygen permeability and water vapor permeability are reduced, thermal stability and mechanical property increases. Most importantly, this magnetic nucleating agent can be recollected and re-manufactured into new batch of PLLA composites without losing the nucleation efficiency, which successfully keep consistent with recyclable and highly-efficient aspiration.
