Abstract:Purpose This paper aims to provide a series of new methods for projecting a three-dimensional (3D) object onto a free-form surface. The projection algorithms presented can be divided into three types, namely, orthogonal, perspective and parallel projection. Design/methodology/approach For parametric surfaces, the computing strategy of the algorithm is to obtain an approximate solution by using a geometric algorithm, then improve the accuracy of the approximate solution using the Newton–Raphson iteration. For perspective projection and parallel projection on an implicit surface, the strategy replaces Newton–Raphson iteration by multi-segment tracing. The implementation takes two mesh objects as an example of calculating an image projected onto parametric and implicit surfaces. Moreover, a comparison is made for orthogonal projections with Hu’s and Liu’s methods. Findings The results show that the new method can solve the 3D objects projection problem in an effective manner. For orthogonal projection, the time taken by the new method is substantially less than that required for Hu’s method. The new method is also more accurate and faster than Liu’s approach, particularly when the 3D object has a large number of points. Originality/value The algorithms presented in this paper can be applied in many industrial applications such as computer aided design, computer graphics and computer vision.

Abstract:This paper proposes an algorithm for calculating the orthogonal projection of parametric curves onto B-spline surfaces. It consists of a second order tracing method with which we construct a polyline to approximate the pre-image curve of the orthogonal projection curve in the parametric domain of the base surface. The final 3D approximate curve is obtained by mapping the approximate polyline onto the base surface. The Hausdorff distance between the exact orthogonal projection curve and the approximate curve is controlled under the user-specified distance tolerance. And the continuity of the approximate curve is @e"T-G^1, where @e"T is the user-specified angle tolerance. Experiments demonstrate that our algorithm is faster than the existing first order algorithms.

Abstract:Conventional methods for solving intersections between two offset parametric surfaces often include iteratively using computationally expensive SSI (surface/surface intersections) algorithm. In addition, these methods ignore the relations between the intersection curves of parametric surfaces with different offset distances. The algorithm presented in this paper, makes full use of the topological relations between different intersection loops and calculates intersection loops with the help of previously calculated intersection loops. It first pre-processes two parametric surfaces to obtain the characteristic points, called topology transition points (TTPs), which can help in the subsequent finding of the topologies of the intersection curves. Then these points are categorized into several distinct groups, and we can determine the calculation strategy for searching initial points by analyzing the properties of these TTPs on the surfaces. Hence, all intersection curves can be marched from initial points by the tracing algorithm. The proposed algorithm could calculate intersection curves robustly and effectively, and has been tested to be capable of overcoming the degenerate conditions such as loop and singularities leaking that occur frequently in conventional algorithms.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel linear dimensionality reduction algorithm, called Orthogonal Projection Analysis (OPA), from a gradient field perspective. Our approach is based on the following two criteria. First, the linear map should preserve the metric of the ambient space, which is based on the assumption that the metric of the ambient space is reliable. The second is the well-known smoothness criterion which is critical for clustering. Interestingly, gradient field is a natural tool to connect to these two requirements. We give a continuous objective function based on gradient fields and discuss how to discretize it by using tangent space. We also show the geometric meaning of our approach, which is requiring the gradient field as orthogonal as possible to the tangent spaces. The experimental results have demonstrated the effectiveness of our proposed approach.

Abstract:In this paper, based on the idea of profit and loss modification, we present the iterative non-uniform B-spline curve and surface to settle a key problem in computer aided geometric design and reverse engineering, that is, constructing the curve (surface) fitting (interpolating) a given ordered point set without solving a linear system. We start with a piece of initial non-uniform B-spline curve (surface) which takes the given point set as its control point set. Then by adjusting its control points gradually with iterative formula, we can get a group of non-uniform B-spline curves (surfaces) with gradually higher precision. In this paper, using modern matrix theory, we strictly prove that the limit curve (surface) of the iteration interpolates the given point set. The non-uniform B-spline curves (surfaces) generated with the iteration have many advantages, such as satisfying the NURBS standard, having explicit expression, gaining locality, and convexity preserving, etc.

In this paper, we present a hyperbola approximation method based on the quadratic reparameterization of Bezier surfaces, which generates reasonable low degree curves lying completely on the surfaces by using iso-parameter curves of the reparameterized surfaces. Abstract:This paper proposes an algorithm for estimation of point projection parameters, based on pruning on the explicit convex hull of the squared distance function. The explicit expression of the squared distance function is deduced. According to the special requirement of point projection, the convex hull of the squared distance function is incrementally constructed. In each step, regions that obviously contain no projection points are eliminated from the base curve or surface, by intersecting the current nearest distance line with the convex hull. When the user-defined tolerances are satisfied, iteration algorithms are used to get the precise projection points. Experimental results show that compared with existing algorithms using clipping circle/sphere or line/plane, this algorithm possesses higher elimination rate and computation speed.

Abstract:There exist efficient algorithms to project a point onto the intersection of a convex conic and an affine subspace. Those conic projections are in turn the work-horse of a range of algorithms in conic optimization, having a variety of applications in science, finance and engineering. This chapter reviews some of these algorithms, emphasizing the so-called regularization algorithms for linear conic optimization, and applications in polynomial optimization. This is a presentation of the material of several recent research articles; we aim here at clarifying the ideas, presenting them in a general framework, and pointing out important techniques.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the orthogonal projection of a surface in $\mathbb{R}^3$ for a given view direction. We then introduce and investigate several invariants of the families of the plane curves that locally configure the projection image of the surface. Using the invariants, we also show an extension of the d'Ocagne formula that associates a local behavior of the projection image of a surface with Gaussian curvature of the surface.

Abstract:An efficient algorithm for reconstructing all polyhedral 3D solid models from 2D orthographic projections is addressed. The algorithm can handle pathological cases and identify all possible correct solutions efficiently. The algorithm has efficient techniques for constructing candidate wireframes, handling broken lines in the input data, generating face loops, determining cutting edges and vertices, building body loops, and assembling body loops into candidate objects. Several symmetric and complex orthographic projections are given to show the completeness of the algorithm.

Abstract:A novel method for projecting points onto a point cloud, possibly with noise, is presented based on the point directed projection (DP) algorithm proposed by Azariadis P., Sapidis N. [Drawing curves onto a cloud of points for point-based modelling. Computer-Aided Design 2005; 37(1): 109–22]. The new method operates directly on the point cloud without any explicit or implicit surface reconstruction procedure. The presented method uses a simple, robust, and efficient algorithm: least-squares projection (LSP), which projects points onto the point cloud in a least-squares sense without any specification of the projection vector. The main contribution of this novel method is the automatic computation of the projection vector. Furthermore, we demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach through a number of application examples including thinning a point cloud, point normal estimation, projecting curves onto a point cloud and others.

Abstract:This article focuses on numerical efficiency of projection algorithms for solving linear optimization problems. The theoretical foundation for this approach is provided by the basic result that bounded finite dimensional linear optimization problem can be solved by single projection operation on the feasible polyhedron. The further simplification transforms this problem into projection of a special point onto a convex polyhedral cone generated basically by inequalities of the original linear optimization problem.

Abstract:We fully characterize orthogonal projections of infinite right circular (round) cones in real Hilbert spaces. Another interpretation is that, given two vectors in a real Hilbert space, we establish the optimal estimate on the angle between the orthogonal projections of the two vectors. The estimate depends on the angle between the two vectors and the position of only one of the two vectors. Our results also make a contributions to Cauchy-Bunyakovsky-Schwarz type inequalities.

Abstract:A wide range of physical phenomena exhibit auxiliary admissibility criteria, such as conservation of entropy or various energies, which arise implicitly under exact solution of their governing PDEs. However, standard temporal schemes, such as classical Runge-Kutta (RK) methods, do not enforce these constraints, leading to a loss of accuracy and stability. Projection is an efficient way to address this shortcoming by correcting the RK solution at the end of each time step. Here we introduce a novel projection method for explicit RK schemes, called a \textit{quasi-orthogonal} projection method. This method can be employed for systems containing a single (not necessarily convex) invariant functional, for dissipative systems, and for the systems containing multiple invariants. It works by projecting the orthogonal search direction(s) into the solution space spanned by the RK stage derivatives. With this approach linear invariants of the problem are preserved, the time step size remains fixed, additional computational cost is minimal, and these optimal search direction(s) preserve the order of accuracy of the base RK method. This presents significant advantages over existing projection methods. Numerical results demonstrate that these properties are observed in practice for a range of applications.

Abstract:In this paper we come up with a dual version of the Furstenberg problem and obtain partial results via $L^p$ estimates of orthogonal projections. Examples are also discussed. Moreover, compared with general sets, we find that special structure like Cartesian product has better $L^p$-behavior. This leads to improvement on some discretized sum-product estimates.
