Abstract:Point projection on an implicit surface is essential for the geometric modeling and graphics applications of it. This paper presents a method for computing the principle curvatures and principle directions of an implicit surface. Using the principle curvatures and principle directions, we construct a torus patch to approximate the implicit surface locally. The torus patch is second order osculating to the implicit surface. By taking advantage of the approximation torus patch, this paper develops a second order geometric iterative algorithm for point projection on the implicit surface. Experiments illustrate the efficiency and less dependency on initial values of our algorithm.

The iteration T-splines reconstruction method is employed in general patching, and the iterative T-NURCCs is employed at singular points. Despite the differences of optimization strategies, they are all represented in T-splines, whose data structures and evaluation procedures are identical. The method is adapted to reconstruct complex models.

Abstract:Estimating principal curvatures and principal directions of a smooth surface represented by a triangular mesh is an important step in many CAD or graphics related tasks. This paper presents a new method for curvature tensor estimation on a triangular mesh by replacing flat triangles with triangular parametric patches. An improved local interpolation scheme of cubic triangular Bézier patches to vertices and vertex normals of triangle meshes is developed. Piecewise parametric surfaces that have C0 continuity across boundary curves of adjacent patches and G1 continuity at the joint vertices are obtained by the interpolation scheme. A closed form expression of Taubin integral–a 3×3 symmetric matrix in integral formulation–is derived based on the piecewise parametric surfaces. Principal curvatures and principal directions are then computed from the Taubin integral. The proposed method does not need to parameterize data points or solve a linear system which is usually required by other surface fitting methods. Compared to several state-of-the-art curvature estimation methods, the proposed method can generate more accurate results for general surface meshes. The experiments have demonstrated its accuracy, robustness and effectiveness.

Abstract:Purpose This paper aims to provide a series of new methods for projecting a three-dimensional (3D) object onto a free-form surface. The projection algorithms presented can be divided into three types, namely, orthogonal, perspective and parallel projection. Design/methodology/approach For parametric surfaces, the computing strategy of the algorithm is to obtain an approximate solution by using a geometric algorithm, then improve the accuracy of the approximate solution using the Newton–Raphson iteration. For perspective projection and parallel projection on an implicit surface, the strategy replaces Newton–Raphson iteration by multi-segment tracing. The implementation takes two mesh objects as an example of calculating an image projected onto parametric and implicit surfaces. Moreover, a comparison is made for orthogonal projections with Hu’s and Liu’s methods. Findings The results show that the new method can solve the 3D objects projection problem in an effective manner. For orthogonal projection, the time taken by the new method is substantially less than that required for Hu’s method. The new method is also more accurate and faster than Liu’s approach, particularly when the 3D object has a large number of points. Originality/value The algorithms presented in this paper can be applied in many industrial applications such as computer aided design, computer graphics and computer vision.

Abstract:In practical applications, we usually use surfaces of lower degree and less number of patches to interpolate irregular data points so that operations applied on these surfaces can run efficiently and robustly. In this paper, we propose a recursive and adaptive method to construct a (first order geometric continuity) cubic triangular Bernstein-Bezier surface over an arbitrary triangulation derived from a given set of irregular data points. A Novel Simplification Algorithm for Point-Sampled Surfaces.

Abstract:The surface simplification of point-sampled geometry is one of the key preprocessing techniques for subsequent modeling and visualization algorithms. Based on geometry images, in the paper, we put forward a novel simplification algorithm for point- sampled surfaces. First the point-sampled surfaces are represented as geometry images r(phi,thetas), thetas (r, phi) phi (r, thetas) by projecting their spherical polar coordinates onto a plane. Based on geometry images, the k-nearest neighbors of sample points are then determined significantly fast and their curvatures are estimated. Finally, the point set surfaces are simplified according to the curvature and simplified density. In addition, the quality of the simplified point set surfaces is evaluated using the error measurement method based on the moving least squares surface. This algorithm is very fast, easy to implement and can create high-quality surface approximation with preserving the detail very well and control the simplified density conveniently.

Abstract:This article presents a method for multipoint inversion and multiray surface intersection problem on the parametric surface. By combining tracing along the surface and classical Newton iteration, it can solve point inversion and ray-surface intersection issues concerning a large number of points or rays in a stable and high-speed way. What is more, the computation result can approximate to exact solutions with arbitrary precision because of the self-correction of Newton-Raphson iteration. The main ideas are adopting a scheme tracing along the surface to obtain a good initial point, which is close to the desired point with any prescribed precision, and conducting Newton iteration process with the point as a start point to compute desired parameters. The new method enhances greatly iterative convergence rate compared with traditional Newton's iteration related methods. In addition, it has a better performance than traditional methods, especially in dealing with multipoint inversion and multiray surface intersection problems. The result shows that the new method is superior to them in both speed and stability and can be widely applied to industrial and research field related to CAD and CG.

Abstract:This paper proposes an algorithm for estimation of point projection parameters, based on pruning on the explicit convex hull of the squared distance function. The explicit expression of the squared distance function is deduced. According to the special requirement of point projection, the convex hull of the squared distance function is incrementally constructed. In each step, regions that obviously contain no projection points are eliminated from the base curve or surface, by intersecting the current nearest distance line with the convex hull. When the user-defined tolerances are satisfied, iteration algorithms are used to get the precise projection points. Experimental results show that compared with existing algorithms using clipping circle/sphere or line/plane, this algorithm possesses higher elimination rate and computation speed.

Abstract:In this paper, we first reconstruct a second order polynomial surface to approximate the original point model in the local area of each point, which is then restricted within a so-called ε-confidence region, producing a ε-surfel. The surfels form a tight approximation to the original model with errors within ε everywhere, and can be used to compute the ray intersection with the original point model. Experimental results show that our local surface reconstruction and ray-tracing method is fast, with high approximation accuracy and high rendering quality, and is also adaptive to models with different sampling densities.

Abstract:In this paper, based on the idea of profit and loss modification, we present the iterative non-uniform B-spline curve and surface to settle a key problem in computer aided geometric design and reverse engineering, that is, constructing the curve (surface) fitting (interpolating) a given ordered point set without solving a linear system. We start with a piece of initial non-uniform B-spline curve (surface) which takes the given point set as its control point set. Then by adjusting its control points gradually with iterative formula, we can get a group of non-uniform B-spline curves (surfaces) with gradually higher precision. In this paper, using modern matrix theory, we strictly prove that the limit curve (surface) of the iteration interpolates the given point set. The non-uniform B-spline curves (surfaces) generated with the iteration have many advantages, such as satisfying the NURBS standard, having explicit expression, gaining locality, and convexity preserving, etc.

Abstract:Presented two methods to approximate several differential properties, including mean curvature, guass curvature, main curvatures and main directions on point-sampled surfaces. The first method transports voronoi cell and mixed finite-element/finite-volume on triangle mesh to point set. The second one uses moving least square(MLS) projection and fits a series of polynomial patch to the point set surface. Compareing our methods to the analytical results on parametric surfaces. Experiments show that the estimates are satisfying in accuracy.

Abstract:A rapid incremental surface approximation algorithm is proposed to establish B-spline surface from the unorganized point cloud. The algorithm is composed of four steps. Firstly, boundary data are obtained in order to set up an initial surface. Secondly, parameterization of raw data is established by projecting. Thirdly, a mask surface is designed to move on the reconstructed surface and its control points are calculated. Finally, the control points of mask surfaces and control points of the whole surface are updated. The reconstructed surface can gradually approximate the target surface by incrementally adding additional sampling points. For a complex surface, can be obtained by computing points' parameter and approximating the target surface twice or more a satisfactory result.

Abstract:Recently, the use of B-spline curves/surfaces to fit point clouds by iteratively repositioning the B-spline's control points on the basis of geometrical rules has gained in popularity because of its simplicity, scalability, and generality. We distinguish between two types of fitting, interpolation and approximation. Interpolation generates a B-spline surface that passes through the data points, whereas approximation generates a B-spline surface that passes near the data points, minimizing the deviation of the surface from the data points. For surface interpolation, the data points are assumed to be in grids, whereas for surface approximation the data points are assumed to be randomly distributed. In this paper, an iterative geometric interpolation method, as well as an approximation method, which is based on the framework of the iterative geometric interpolation algorithm, is discussed. These two iterative methods are compared with standard fitting methods using some complex examples, and the advantages and shortcomings of our algorithms are discussed. Furthermore, we introduce two methods to accelerate the iterative geometric interpolation algorithm, as well as a method to impose geometric constraints, such as reflectional symmetry, on the iterative geometric interpolation process, and a novel fairing method for non-uniform complex data points. Complex examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Abstract:AbstractThis paper presents a new algorithm for torus/torus intersection. The pre-image of the intersection in the parametric space of one torus is represented by an implicit equation. The pre-image is divided into one-valued function curve segments by characteristic points. The topological feature of these characteristic points is analyzed to obtain the structure of the pre-image. Intersection curves satisfying required precision are found by a self-adaptive refinement method. Experiment results are presented to illustrate the stability and efficiency of the method.

Abstract:Conventional methods for solving intersections between two offset parametric surfaces often include iteratively using computationally expensive SSI (surface/surface intersections) algorithm. In addition, these methods ignore the relations between the intersection curves of parametric surfaces with different offset distances. The algorithm presented in this paper, makes full use of the topological relations between different intersection loops and calculates intersection loops with the help of previously calculated intersection loops. It first pre-processes two parametric surfaces to obtain the characteristic points, called topology transition points (TTPs), which can help in the subsequent finding of the topologies of the intersection curves. Then these points are categorized into several distinct groups, and we can determine the calculation strategy for searching initial points by analyzing the properties of these TTPs on the surfaces. Hence, all intersection curves can be marched from initial points by the tracing algorithm. The proposed algorithm could calculate intersection curves robustly and effectively, and has been tested to be capable of overcoming the degenerate conditions such as loop and singularities leaking that occur frequently in conventional algorithms.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new approach to estimate curvature information of point-sampled surfaces. We estimate curvatures in terms of the extremal points of a one-dimensional energy function for discrete surfels (points equipped with normals) and a multi-dimensional energy function for discrete unstructured point clouds. Experimental results indicate that our approaches can estimate curvatures faithfully, and reflect the subtle curvature variations. Some applications for curvature information, such as surface simplification and feature extraction for point-sampled surfaces, are given.

Abstract:Surface reconstruction from point clouds is a fundamental step in many applications in computer vision. In this paper, we develop an efficient iterative method on a variational model for the surface reconstruction from point clouds. The surface is implicitly represented by indicator functions and the energy functional is then approximated based on such representations using heat kernel convolutions. We then develop a novel iterative method to minimize the approximate energy and prove the energy decaying property during each iteration. We then use asymptotic expansion to give a connection between the proposed algorithm and active contour models. Extensive numerical experiments are performed in both 2- and 3- dimensional Euclidean spaces to show that the proposed method is simple, efficient, and accurate.
