Abstract:The typical receiving-end systems in China are continuously connected with HVDC transmission lines, which changes the traditional grid form and makes the voltage stability problem prominent. How to understand the relation among voltage stability, power grid strength and equipment control is the key to grasp the mechanism of voltage stability and improve the control to avoid the systems entering into static voltage instability and transient voltage instability. In this paper, the relation among the transmitted active power, the voltage at the equipment infeed point and the current of AC system is studied, the relation among the voltage stability and the power grid strength and the control logic of the equipment is explained. Then, the influence rules of line reactance and equipment reactive power on the power limit trajectory (PLT) is studied. In the end, based on the power limit trajectory determined by line reactance, the simulation results of PSCAD/EMTDC showed that the improved DC control method can improve the voltage stability, and the theory in this paper has a certain practical guiding significance.
Impedance-based Analysis of Constant Reactive Power Control for Voltage Source Converter in Weak AC Grids

Abstract:When voltage source converters (VSCs) are connected to a weak AC grid, the constant reactive power control (CRPC) is more suitable for realizing optimal reactive power dispatch than the constant AC voltage control. This paper investigates the stability issues caused by the CRPC of VSCs. An impedance model of the VSC is developed which contributes to representing the CRPC dynamics characteristics. The impact of the CRPC parameters on the q-q channel impedance is analyzed. Then, a multiple-input multiple-output model is developed to analyze the small-signal stability of a grid-connected converter system. The eigenvalue analysis for the effects of both CRPC proportional gain and grid inductance on stability is presented. The impedance-based analysis reveals that the CRPC may cause medium-high frequency oscillations in the grid-connected converter system. Finally, time-domain simulations are conducted to validate the analysis.

Abstract:At present,high voltage (HV)reactors are mainly used to restrain the power frequency overvoltage and secondary arc current,not for the voltage control purpose.With the spreading and changing of power grid,part of HV reactors cannot be put into operation.In order to improve the use efficiency of assets,an optimization configuration method of HV reactor was proposed.Firstly,this method comprehensively considered the capacitance effect and power loss of transmission lines,as well as the existing inductive reactive power compensation degree of the two end stations of the lines;and set of alternative configuration schemes were designed for HV reactors.Then,a comprehensive evaluation system of reactive voltage was established for the configuration schemes of HV reactors with considering the maximum voltage fluctuation and deviation,average power loss,and switching action quantity of inactive power adjusting devices as evaluation indexes.A weighted method based on the variance of fuzzy memberships was introduced for a more scientific and objective optimal scheme decision strategy.Finally,combined with the configuration problem of HV reactors in Shaanxi power grid, the proposed method was proved to be effective and feasible.

Abstract:The low voltage ride through (LVRT) capability of DFIG has caused more concern. And for testing requirements of LVRT for DFIG WT, this paper propose control strategies for LVRT of DFIG WTs by injecting reactive power into grid. Reactive power allocation are decided by voltage sag levels. When grid voltage drop to 30%, grid-side converter (GSC) works as a STATCOM. Their maximum limited reactive current expressions are also considered. An active power control strategy is proposed considering the recovery rate requirement of the active power. Furthermore, a novel RMS model is presented based on external characteristics. Simulations on a 2.5MW DFIG wind turbine demonstrate that the output characteristics satisfy requirement of grid code of wind power.

Abstract:To solve the problem of reactive power and voltage control in the large photovoltaic power plant,the influence of active output changes on the grid voltage stability was firstly analyzed.Then the voltage fluctuation and the deviation caused by line impedance were analyzed in detail.Taking an exam-ple of the standard of GB/T 29321-2012 of the photovoltaic power plants reactive compensation technolo-gy specification, the voltage deviation, reactive power,control mode of grid-connected inverter, voltage regulation and the voltage regulation priority were regulated.In addition, reactive power capacity of grid-connected inverter under different control modes was determired,and the reactive power capacity relation-ship between large scale photovoltaic power plants and SVG was analyzed.On this basis,a reactive power and voltage control strategy for the large scale photovoltaic power plants was proposed.At last,this study is validated by simulation.

Abstract:A two-level system-wide AVC system based on optimal reactive power flow (ORPF) is proposed. The architecture of this two-level system-wide AVC system is different from the popular three-level hierarchical structure in that it is implemented centralized. One distinguished feature of the described AVC system is that it does not require the need of performing zone division and it can automatically adapt to structural changes in power systems. Another feature of the described AVC system is that it works even when the state estimation function of the underlying control center fails. To achieve a close-loop automatic voltage control, the two-level system-wide AVC system has two optimization-based voltage control modules: an optimal reactive power flow module and a corrective voltage control (CVC) module. At present, the proposed AVC system has been commissioned and put into a close-loop mode in four provincial power grids in China. The performance of the two-level system-wide AVC system has been very encouraging.

Abstract:In view of the situation of voltage/reactive power operation in Guangdong power grid in 2009,an investigation is made into the status quo of Guangdong's reactive power hierarchical and regional balancing,voltage operation,reactive power compensation equipment,substation voltage quality control(VQC) and area voltage control(AVC).The problems in the voltage/reactive power operation are summarized with corresponding measures and proposals put forth.Suggestions on key jobs about voltage/reactive power in Guangdong are offered in terms of dynamic reactive power compensation,technical renovation of reactive power compensation,special inspection of technical supervision and management on voltage/reactive power and voltage/reactive power specific analysis and strategies.

Abstract:A practical two-level system-wide automatic voltage control (AVC) system has been developed, implemented and installed in a close-loop manner at several power systems. The architecture of this two-level system-wide AVC system is different from the traditional three-level hierarchical structure in that it is implemented centralized. Compared to three-level hierarchical structure, one distinguished feature of the two-level AVC system is that it does not require the need of performing zone division and it adapts to structural changes in network topologies. Another feature of the two-level AVC system is that it works even when the state estimation (SE) function at the underlying control center fails. To achieve a close-loop automatic voltage control, the two-level AVC system is equipped with two high-performance optimization-based voltage control modules: a reactive optimal power flow (ROPF) module and a corrective voltage control (CVC) module. In designing the AVC system, some domain knowledge and engineering judgments were developed and integrated in the overall solution method. At present, the two-level AVC system has been commissioned and put into a close-loop mode at three provincial power grids in China. The performance of the two-level system-wide AVC system has been very encouraging. This paper also describes some field performance of the AVC system.

Abstract:According to the development trend of power network in China, it is pointed out that the development of UHV AC transmission is not only an effictive approach to meet the growing demand of electric power, but also the requirement of improving power network structure and promoting the nation-wide power grid interconnection. Detailed discussion is then presented on several controversial problems existing in the UHV AC transmission field, including: knowledge about insulation characteristics of gas interval, selection of an appropriate voltage level, effective prevention measures for abnormal lightning trip-out percentage, application of composite insulators in the prevention of dirty flashover, control of environmental influence caused by UHV transmission lines and substations, superiority of UHV in economy and relationship between UHV AC transmission and DC transmission. In the construction of domestic UHV AC transmission, the actual condition of UHV AC transmission engineering in China should be considered, and on the basis of using the research results of former USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics), Japan and United States for reference, and more attention should be paid to the research on UHV transmission technology and the development of related equipments.

Abstract:Firstly,the data of voltage,active and reactive power,power factor etc. are statistically compared,and then the method of reactive power balance is used for analysis on the lack of reactive power. Therefore the status of voltage and reactive power control in Jiangsu 220 kV power grid is analyzed from the view of capacity allocation and management. The main problems of reactive power and voltage are pointed out,and corresponding suggestions are presented. The work can be used for reference for optimization of reactive power and voltage control in the future.

Abstract:The concepts and research approaches of hybrid control systems are applied into the voltage control of power systems in the paper, and a solution based on hybrid automatic voltage control is proposed to the Northeast China Power Grid. The solution is able to improve the Northeast China Power Grid's dynamic performance and voltage stability, and meanwhile reduce the grid's operation losses through rational dispatching the reactive power. In the solution, a hybrid layered voltage control model is set up, the discrete events are taken as drives of the system, and synthetic objects of voltage control are achieved. These methods contribute to better feasibility of the solution, which provides easier access to optimizing solutions and higher calculating efficiency by fully using the technologies available. Results of computer simulation have proved the solution effective in realizing automatic voltage control.

Abstract:This paper introduces at) integrated control strategy based on hybrid control theory for the control of voltage and reactive power in power system substations. The strategy adopts a hierarchical, multilayer Structure to achieve a multi-objective optimization of voltage and reactive power control and improves the traditional "nine-area diagram" control method. The new hybrid control strategy not only solves the problem of oscillatory responses caused by the changes of the on-load tap changer (OLTC) taps and switching the shunt capacitors, but also responds to the global optimal control commands of voltage and reactive power from the master station with good steady-state responses. The hybrid automatic voltage control (HAVC) strategy is tested via simulation of the Northeast China 500 kV grid and the results demonstrate the effectiveness of the strategy. Abstract:To satisfy the demand for high-quality and uninterrupted electricity service increases, advanced automatic voltage control systems of distribution power grid are highly required. Based on the hybrid control method of power systems, a new automatic voltage control system named as D-HAVC is proposed in this work. To handle fast changing daily load, the D-HAVC system adopts the switching control method to design control subsystem. Moreover, for each control subsystem, the fuzzy method is used to unify the value of different operation indexes, which helps to setup a practical multi-objective reactive/voltage optimization problem. Finally, the event-driven control strategy is applied in each control subsystem, which generates the control action by solving the multi-objective optimization problem after discovering violations of the operation indexes. Tasking the Shenzhen power grid as the test system, the effeteness and efficiency of the proposed method are verified. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract:In order to avoid irrational reactive power flow and voltage distribution,the coordinated voltage controlsystem integrated for regional,provincial and prefectural control centers in China Southern Power Grid is proposed.The reactive power and voltage operation and control characteristics of China Southern Power Grid are analyzed. The hierarchical architecture of coordinated voltage controlsystem integrated for regional,provincial and prefectural control centers is described. Some typical applications are emphasized,including the coordination between regional and provincial control centers,the coordination between provincial and prefectural control centers,the voltage control for substations considering the provincial coordinate constraints,the coordinated voltage control for the high voltage direct current(HVDC)neighboring grids,etc,the exchange data content and mode between regional,provincial and prefectural control centers are described.The coordinated voltage control system is currently in real time operation in China Southern Power Grid.

Abstract:Research on coordinated voltage control in the UHV demonstration project is presented. To simulate the quasi-steady process of reactive power and voltage regulating,a power-flow-based simulation platform is developed, and it takes both operation constraints on security and insulation requirement of UHV transmission lines into consideration. The two modes of independent control and coordinated control are compared in this paper. The voltage regulating process of the power grids in Three Gorges area and its neighboring area is simulated, including generator under-excitation operation,HVDC reduced voltage operation and 500 kV transmission lines outage. Based on the simulation results, the key factors influencing voltage regulating for south terminal substations of the UHV demonstration project are pointed out.

Abstract:Based on the project of reformation and reconstruction of the stability control system in Guizhou 500 kV power grid, this paper emphatically discusses the architecture and key techniques of the developed system. A centralized hierarchical structure is adopted in the control system. Thus wide-area operation information can be gathered to obtain a global view of the system and refresh control strategy with the up-to-the-minute data. Based on gathered real-time data of power system, the realized control system in Guizhou 500 kV power grid can calculate adn update its control strategy tables every 5 minutes.

Abstract:Voltage instability problems come out especially when there are not enough fast reacting reactive resources exist. Beijing-Tianjin-Tangshan is the load center area in the North China Power Grid. The power supply in this region has a heavy reliance on external power grid, thus, there is not enough dynamic reactive support in this area and the voltage stability problems may be much more serious than the angle stability problem. In order to solve the above problems and improve the power system stability, this paper discusses a kind of control strategy for practical power grid. All the issues are studied with full scale transient simulation. The methods proposed for the mitigation of voltage instability by using Controllable HV Reactor are flexible and its coordination with other conventional measurements is convenient. Simulation results with serious faults show the effectiveness of the control method. Finally, some suggestions are given, which will make a significant contribution to the stability of power grid as well as reduce the load shedding capacity under some supposed fault conditions.
