Abstract:Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is a widely used characterization technique for studying chemical compositions and light-matter interactions in the infrared range. However, it remains challenging to use conventional FTIR equipment to characterize materials that are environmentally sensitive and/or have rough surfaces due to their dynamic response to external stimuli (e.g., humidity) and light scattering from the sample surface. Here, we describe an approach enabling quantitative infrared spectroscopy measurements of these challenging samples, including transmittance, reflectance, and emissivity. We designed and 3D-printed a miniaturized environmental chamber that can be directly inserted into the sample holder of a conventional integrating sphere to perform total transmission and reflection measurements in controlled environments. Moreover, a calibration method was developed to exclude light scattering from rough surfaces of the sample and the distortion created by infrared windows. To illustrate the potential application of this method, we have performed quantitative infrared measurements, both specular and diffusive, on a sapphire standard reference with a specular surface, as well as a textile sample that has a rough surface and is dynamically responsive to changes in humidity. The calibrated results measured with the equipped chamber match those measured without the IR windows, demonstrating the viability of our environmental chamber and the proposed calibration method. This quantitative infrared spectroscopy measurement technique may help advance fields such as metasurfaces and adaptive textiles, where samples are often rough, dynamically responsive, and/or environmentally sensitive.

Abstract:The surface orientation of polyester fibers has been studied by a modified sampling technique using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The fiber axes were arranged parallel to incident radiation first, and then perpendicular to it. The differences in total absorbance and relative intensity changes in the spectra obtained show the features of specular reflection. The technique has the advantage over ATR that there is no optical contact problem.

Abstract:Using a Fourier transform infra red (FTIR) microscope along with an FTIR spectrophotometer proves beneficial in analyzing the complex layers of some composite polymer films. The study reported in this article demonstrates that analysis of the FTIR spectra can help clarify and explain the formulation of different layers that compose the polymer film.

Abstract:Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is an important tool for material characterization. However, due to the diffraction limit, conventional infrared spectroscopy cannot be applied to nanoscale material. In the past decade, FTIR nano-spectroscopy (nano-FTIR), combining scanning near-field optical microscopy and FTIR, has made significant progress. It provides scientists a powerful tool to study polymers, 2D-materials, semiconductor devices, and biomaterials at the nanoscale. In this review, we introduce the development and working mechanism of nano-FTIR, and summarize some typical applications in different research fields. The purpose of this review is to allow readers to understand the basic principles of nano-FTIR, its current development status, and the application potential of this technology. Finally, we briefly summarize current challenges faced by this technology and present some research directions that deserve attention in the future.

Measuring Thin Films Using Quantitative Frustrated Total Internal Reflection (FTIR)

Abstract:In the study of interactions between liquids and solids, an accurate measurement of the film thickness between the two media is essential to study the dynamics. As interferometry is restricted by the wavelength of the light source used, recent studies of thinner films have prompted the use of frustrated total internal reflection (FTIR). In many studies the assumption of a simple exponential decay of the intensity with film thickness was used. In the present study we highlight that this model does not satisfy the Fresnel equations and thus gives an underestimation of the films. We show that the multiple reflections and transmissions at both the upper and the lower interfaces of the film must be taken into account to accurately describe the measured intensity. In order to quantitatively validate the FTIR technique, we measured the film thickness of the air gap between a convex lens of known geometry and a flat surface and obtain excellent agreement. Furthermore, we also found that we can accurately measure the elastic deformations of the lens under loads by comparing them with the results of the Herzian theory.

Abstract:As a fast, non-destructive analysis method, Fourier transform (FT) near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy is very suitable and effective for online quality analysis of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) manufacturing process. In this thesis, the theoretics of FT-NIRS was analyzed and an FT-NIR spectrometer with 4 cm(-1) resolution in the 12500-5000 cm(-1) frequency range was designed. The spectrometer was based on a Michelson interferometer with Bromine tungsten lamp as the NIR light source and InGaAs detector to collect the interference signal. Each element was designed and chosen to provide maximum sensitivity in the NIR spectral region. A fiber-optic flow cell system was used to realize online analysis of traditional Chinese medicine. The performance of the spectrometer was evaluated and the feasibility of using FT-NIR spectrometer to get absorption spectra of traditional Chinese medicine was demonstrated.

Abstract:When molecules absorb infrared radiation (IR), their vibrational mode‐‐‐stretching and bending of the electric dipole‐‐‐changes to an excited state. Functional groups in organic molecules absorb IR related to their characteristic vibrational modes. A Fourier‐Transform Infrared Absorption (FTIR) analyzer measures the absorbed IR to identify molecular composition of surfaces, structural and geometric isomers, orientation in polymers and solutions, and quantify impurities. We describe the power of FTIR instruments and their basic operating principles, including the main experimental setups available: transmission, diffuse reflectance (DRIFTS), Reflection Adsorption Infrared Spectroscopy (RAIRS), and attenuated total reflection (ATR), including the recent advances related to time‐resolved and operando applications. In catalytic studies, FTIR spectroscopy has demonstrated its versatility over the last several decades to understand reaction mechanisms, measure gas phase composition, and identify active sites. Over 3000 article include catalysis and FTIR as keywords but 50000 articles per year mention IR. We generated a bibliometric map of keywords in articles that WoS indexed in 2016 and 2017. The map identified four broad clusters of research in related to or applying FTIR: nano‐composites, composites, and mechanical properties; nano‐particles, degradation, graphene oxide, and photo‐catalysis; adsorption, aqueous solutions, and waste water; and, drug delivery, silver and gold nano‐particles, green synthesis, and antibacterial activity. Together with a synopsis of the principals of IR spectroscopy and a review of the applications, we discuss uncertainties and limitations of the technique.This article is protected by copyright. Endoscopic Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy through a fiber microprobe

Abstract:Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) is a powerful analytical method for not only the chemical identification of solid, liquid, and gas species, but also the quantification of their concentration. However, the chemical quantification capability of FTIR is significantly hindered when the analyte is surrounded by a strong IR absorbing medium, such as liquid solutions. To overcome this limit, here we develop an IR fiber microprobe that can be inserted into liquid medium, and obtain full FTIR spectra at points of interest. To benchmark this endoscopic FTIR method, we insert the microprobe into bulk water covering a ZnSe substrate and measure the IR transmittance of water as a function of the probe-substrate distance. The obtained vibrational modes, overall transmittance vs z profiles, quantitative absorption coefficients, and micro z-section IR transmittance spectra are all consistent with the standard IR absorption properties of water. The results pave the way for endoscopic chemical profiling inside bulk liquid solutions, promising for applications in many biological, chemical, and electrochemical systems.

Abstract:Interfacial polymerisation plays a pivotal role in the chemical industry and academic research but acquiring chemical insights into the formation of ultra-thin films remains challenging. The real-time characterisation of the interfacial polymerization process is demonstrated here by using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR)mapping spectroscopy with microscopy. The entire formation process of microporous polyarylate films was studied using this approach to reveal the mechanism and measure reaction kinetics, which had not yet been established. Our key findings reveal that the mechanism involves a three-stage reaction and allow the first measurement of the reaction rate constants with different molecular backbones.
The evolution of total internal reflection Raman spectroscopy for the chemical characterization of thin films and interfaces

Abstract:Total internal reflection (TIR) optical spectroscopies have been widely used for decades as non-destructive and surface-sensitive measurements of thin films and interfaces. Under TIR conditions, an evanescent wave propagates into the sample layer within a region approximately 50 nm to 2 μm from the interface, which limits the spatial extent of the optical signal. The most common TIR optical spectroscopies are fluorescence (i.e., TIRF) and infrared spectroscopy (i.e., attenuated total reflection infrared). Despite the first report of TIR Raman spectroscopy appearing in 1973, this method has not received the same attention to date. While TIR Raman methods can provide chemical specific information, it has been outshined in many respects by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). TIR Raman spectroscopy, however, is garnering more interest for analyzing the chemical and physical properties of thin polymer films, self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), multilayered systems, and adsorption at an interface. Herein, we discuss the early experimental and computational work that laid the foundation for recent developments in the use of TIR Raman techniques. Recent applications of TIR Raman spectroscopy as well as modern TIR Raman instruments capable of measuring monolayer-sensitive vibrational modes on smooth metallic surfaces are also discussed. The use of TIR Raman spectroscopy has been on a rise and will continue to push the limits for chemical specific interfacial and thin film measurements. Abstract:Fourier transform attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy(ATR-FT-IR) and spectral subtraction were applied in analyzing component and flaw of rubber products.But their ATR spectrogram often contains the IR peaks of additives,so it brings difficulties to analysis of rubber components.After processing the sample with organic solvent and inorganic acid,the surface additives can be cleared.The results show that the compositions of the rubber products include polyvinylchloride(PVC) and styrene-hydrogenated butadiene-styrene copolymer(SEBS).Flaw of rubber was analyzed using the spectral subtraction.In this work,flaw of white spots on rubber surface is due to exudation of the antioxidant and flame retardants.Therefore,the ATR-FT-IR is a very convenient,fast and non-destructive method to analyze polymer materials.
A Spectroscopic Technique for Insitu Measurement of Water at the Coating Metal Interface

Abstract:A technique was developed based on Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in the multiple internal reflection mode (FTIR-MIR) for measuring in situ water at the coating/metal interface. The technique requires a direct application of a transparent or opaque polymer coating of any thickness to a Ge internal reflection element (IRE). A water chamber was attached to the polymer-coated IRE and water was introduced through the chamber inlet. FTIR-MIR spectra were taken automatically at specified time intervals without realignment or readjustment of the ATR accessory and without disturbing the specimens or the conditions of the experiment. The intensities of the water bands increased and those of the coating bands decreased initially and then leveled off as the exposure times increased. Calculations are presented to demonstrate that the technique can provide information on water at the coating/metal interface. The method may also provide a convenient means for measuring the diffusion of polymer coatings on metals.

Abstract:In situ FTIR reflection spectroscopy (in situ FTIRS) can probe both surface and solution species involved in electrochemical reactions, and is powerful in characterization of interfaces and studies of electrode reaction mechanism at a molecule level. This communication reviews our recent progresses in developing in situ FTIR reflection spectroscopy, including microscope FTIR reflection spectroscopy (MFTIRS), step-scan fast time-resolved FTIR reflection spectroscopy (SSTRFTIRS) and the surface combinatorial analysis method by combining the MFTIRS with an individually addressable array of microelectrodes. Selected examples of using these advanced techniques in studies of electrochemical reactions such as electroadsorption of different molecules, electrocatalytic reactions of different fuels and amino acids, as well as interfacial reactions involved in a lithium ion battery will be demonstrated. In addition, the first infrared free electron laser and spectroscopic facilities for energy chemistry studies built up in China will be briefly introduced. Near-Ir Fourier-Transform Raman-Spectroscopy in Surgery and Medicine - Ophthalmic Applications

Abstract:This report describes the application of a recently developed spectroscopic technique, near- infrared-excited Fourier transform Raman scattering (abbreviated as near-IR FT-Raman) in the molecular-level characterization of normal and pathological human ocular tissues. The near-IR FT-Raman technique was shown to be particularly well-suited for the noninvasive analysis of intact ophthalmic samples because it exhibits such attractive features as complete fluorescence elimination, great sampling flexibility, high data acquisition speed, and measurement accuracy. For both intact human lenses and corneas, systematic FT-Raman studies were carried out in order to probe detailed molecular changes involved in cataract formation and cornea diseases. FT-Raman measurement was also made for synthetic biomaterials that can be attached to the corneal surface for laser refractive surgery. The technique of near-IR FT- Raman spectroscopy is potentially a nondestructive, non-invasive fingerprinting modality for monitoring lens aging, cataract formation, and corneal disease development.

Abstract:Introduction: Various pharmaceutical preparations are widely used for clinical treatment. Elucidation of the mechanisms of drug release and evaluation of drug efficacy in biological samples are important in drug design and drug quality control.Areas covered: This review classifies recent applications of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy in the field of medicine to comprehend drug release and diffusion. Drug release is affected by many factors of preparations, such as drug delivery system and microstructure polymorphism. The applications of FTIR imaging and nano-FTIR technique in biological samples lay a foundation for studying drug mechanism in vivo.Expert opinion: FTIR spectroscopy meets the research needs on preparations to understand the processes and mechanisms underlying drug release. The combination of attenuated total reflectance-FTIR imaging and nano-FTIR accompanied by chemometrics is a potent tool to overcome the deficiency of conventional infrared detection. FTIR shows an enormous potential in drug characterization, drug quality control, and bio-sample detection.

Abstract:Fourier transform infrared transmission (FTIR/TS), external reflection (FTIR/ERS), and internal reflection (FTIR/IRS) spectroscopies are three important sampling techniques for the study of adsorbed surfactants. The optical and spectral characteristics of a three-phase system were calculated using theoretical simulation and discussed based on experimental results for oleate adsorption at the air/water interface and at the water/fluorite interface. It is shown that a thorough understanding of the optical properties and spectral characteristics from FTIR analysis helps to improve the experimental design and explanation of experimental results and is important to properly quantify surfactant interfacial adsorption phenomena.

Abstract:About 350 kinds of traditional chinese medicine (TCM) formula particles and their supplementary materials were determined with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and their fingerprint spectra were studied. It was shown that the distinctive spectra of TCM formula particles could be used in the discrimination of formula particles from different medical herbs or animals. It was also demonstrated that FTIR is an effective technique in the multi-step quality control of TCM formula particles products. According to studies of the fingerprint spectra of particles and medical herbs and animals, the difference of chemical components between particles and medicines, between particles from different processes, between particles from different pharmaceutical factories and different production batches in the same factory were studied. The supplementary materials in the particles were analyzed, and in most cases dextrin was in common use. FTIR was demonstrated to be a rapid, simple and reliable method in the quality control of TCM formula particles.
