Abstract:Adverse environmental stresses such as drought and low or high temperature will inhibit seed emergence and delay seedling establishment, resulting in significant yield reduction and poor seed quality. Beneficial chemicals for plant growth, such as fungicides, insecticides, fertilizers, and growth promoters, are usually delivered through seed-coating technology to protect seeds from diseases, pests, environmental stresses, and to enhance field seedling establishment. However, traditional seed-coating agents might not be able to meet the requirements due to their low efficiency. Now high polymer materials have been got lots of attention in many research fields, and here in present chapter we want to give a new angle of view about how to apply the high polymer materials in agriculture research to develop "intelligent" coating agents to make the traditional seed-coating agents more efficient.
Effects of several polymeric materials on the improvement of the sandy soil under rainfall simulation

Abstract:Poor cementation between soil particles is a fundamental cause of soil erosion and desertification. In recent decades, many polymers have been used to cement soil particles and improve the physical and chemical properties of soils. The contributions of polymers with different structures and functional groups to soil improvement vary considerably. In this study, a mixture comprising polyacrylamide (PAM), sodium polyacrylate (PAAS), hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was investigated to meet the requirements of soil water retention, erosion resistance, and plant growth. The results showed that the time required for the modified soil to reach drought conditions was extended by 4-7 days. The PAM/HPMC, PAM/PVA and PAM/PAAS experimental groups reduced the erosion rate by 99.57%, 98.3% and 96.38%, respectively, compared to that of the control group. The belowground plant biomass was significantly increased by PAM/HPMC, PAM/PAAS, and PAM/PVA, with increases of 115.92%, 145.23%, and 205.67%, respectively. HPMC contributed more to the soil erosion resistance and water-holding capacity, PAAS improved the soil porosity substantially, and PVA significantly increased the plant biomass. The rigid structures of the polymer chains enhanced the structural stability of the soil, and the hydrophilic functional groups increased the hydrophilicity of the amended soil. This study indicates different polymers that may be used to improve soil properties.
Soil water retention and vegetation survivability improvement using microbial biopolymers in drylands

Abstract:Vegetation cover plays a vital role in stabilizing the soil structure, thereby contributing to surface erosion control. Surface vegetation acts as a shelterbelt that controls the flow velocity and reduces the kinetic energy of the water near the soil surface, whereas vegetation roots reinforce the soil via the formation of root-particle interactions that reduce particle detachment. In this study, two vegetation-testing trials were conducted. The first trial was held on cool-season turfgrasses seeded in a biopolymer-treated site soil in an open greenhouse. At the end of the test, the most suitable grass type was suggested for the second vegetation test, which was conducted in an environmental control chamber. In the second test, biopolymers, namely, starch and xanthan gum hydrogels (pure starch, pure xanthan gum, and xanthan gum-starch mixtures), were tested as soil conditioners for improving the water-holding capacity and vegetation growth in sandy soils. The results support the possibility that biopolymer treatments may enhance the survival rate of vegetation under severe drought environments, which could be applicable for soil stabilization in arid and semiarid regions.

Improvement of Water Stability of Sand Admixed with Water-Soluble Organic Polymer

Abstract:Weak water stability of soil is one of the prime causes of soil erosion and slope damage. To understand the improvement on the water stability of sand by a soluble organic polymer (polyurethane, PU), we have conducted a series of water-stability and turbidity tests to evaluate the effects of different polymer content, densities, and immersion times. The mechanism of the improvements is investigated based on scanning electron and digital microscopes. Our results reveal that the polymer can effectively improve the water stability of sand, where the water-stability coefficient enhanced from zero to 100. The turbidity of the water after oscillation was determined, and its value reduced from 84.5 to 10 and kept stable, which further proved the PU improvement on the water stability of sand. The results can be considered as the reference for construction and management of riverbanks and drainage ditches.

Abstract:Polymers have attracted widespread interest as soil stabilizers and are proposed as an ecologically acceptable means for enhancing the geotechnical properties of soils. They have found profound applications in diverse fields such as the food industry, textile, medicine, agriculture, construction, and many more. Various polymers are proven to increase soil shear strength, improve volume stability, promote water retention, and prevent erosion, at extremely low concentrations within soils through the formation of a polymer membrane around the soil particles upon hydration. The purpose of this work is to provide an overview of existing research on synthetic polymers for soil improvement. A fundamental evaluation of many synthetic polymers used in soil stabilization is provided, Furthermore, the impact of different polymer types on the geotechnical parameters of treated soil was assessed and compared. Limiting factors like polymer durability and the effect of changing climatic conditions on the engineering behavior of the polymer-treated soils have been critically reviewed. The dominant mechanisms responsible for the alteration in the behavior of polymer-soil admixture are reviewed and discussed. This review article will allow practicing engineers to better understand the intrinsic and extrinsic parameters of targeted polymers before employing them in real-field scenarios for better long-term performance.
Preparation and Properties of Bio-Based Attapulgite Copolymer (BAC) Sand-Fixing Material

Abstract:Desertification, one of the world's most pressing serious environmental problems, poses a serious threat to human survival as well as to social, economic, and political development. Nevertheless, the development of environmentally friendly sand-fixing materials is still a tremendous challenge for preventing desertification. This study developed a bio-based attapulgite copolymer (BAC) by grafting copolymerization of attapulgite, starch, sulfomethyl lignin, and biological mycelia. Water retention, anti-water erosion, and anti-wind erosion tests were conducted to assess the application performance of the BAC. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was then employed to determine the morphology of the attapulgite and attapulgite graft copolymer sand-fixing material (CSF). The intermolecular interactions in CSF were revealed using Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FT-IR). The role of sand-fixing materials on soil physicochemical properties and seed germination was then discussed based on the germination rate experiments, and 16S rDNA sequencing technology was used to analyze the differences in microbial communities in each sample group. The results demonstrated that the BAC not only has superior application properties and significantly increased seed germination (95%), but also promotes soil development by regulating the structure of the soil microbial community. This work provides novel insights into the design of sand-fixing material for preventing desertification while improving soil fertility.

Abstract:Chemical sand stabilization has potential for desertification control and this method is characterized by its speed and convenience in operation compared with other stabilization technologies. The materials used in chemical sand stabilization are the key point of this technology and various materials have been developed and investigated. In this review, we present the classification, performance of the materials adopted in sand stabilization, and their stabilizing mechanism as well. We wish to find the relationship between the material structures and their application performance to prevent blind use. However, the consideration for the materials used in chemical sand stabilization is far behind the requirement of desertification control, thus greater efforts have to be paid in this area.
An Eco-Friendly Polymer Composite Fertilizer for Soil Fixation, Slope Stability, and Erosion Control

Abstract:In the Loess Plateau region, the poor structure and properties of loess slopes will cause many types of geological disasters such as landslides, mudflow, land collapse, soil erosion, and ground cracking. In this paper, an eco-friendly polymer composite fertilizer (PCF) based on corn straw wastes (CS) and geopolymer synthesized from loess was studied. The characterization by FT-IR of the PCF confirmed that graft copolymer is formed, while morphological analysis by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy showed that geopolymer and urea were embedded in the polymer porous network. The effects of PCF contents on the compressive strength of loess were investigated. The PCF was characterized in terms of surface curing test, temperature and freeze-thaw aging property, water and wind erosion resistance, and remediation soil acidity and alkalinity property, which indicates that PCF can improve loess slope fixation and stability by physical and chemical effects. Moreover, the loess slope planting experiment showed that PCF can significantly increase the germination rate of vegetation from 31% to 68% and promote the survival rate of slope vegetation from 45.2% to 67.7% to enhance biological protection for loess slopes. The PCF meets the demands of building and roadbed slope protection and water-soil conservation in arid and semi-arid regions, which opens a new application field for multifunctional polymer composite fertilizers with low cost and environmental remediation.

Abstract:Chemical sand-fixing technology has shown good potential in preventing desertification, but the effect is determined by materials. In this paper, the adsorption behavior of quartz and six common polymer sand-fixing agents under dry conditions was studied by molecular dynamics method. The results show that all polymers could be adsorbed on the surface of quartz and their functional groups play an important role in the adsorption process. Compared with other materials, the binding energy and the number of hydrogen bonds of PAA-quartz composites were improved by 30.7–65.6% and 8.3–333.3%, respectively. It was found that the number of hydrogen bonds formed under the unit molecular was positively correlated with the mechanical properties of the improved sandy soil. This study provides an accurate, efficient and inexpensive qualitative evaluation method for the curing effect of sand fixers, which will assist in the screening and development of new high performance sand fixers.

Abstract:Sand erosion due to wind is a serious problem in the relatively arid and semiarid areas. A new organic polymer sand-fixing agent (PVIN), polymerized by the monomer of vinyl acetate, initiator and cross-linking agent, is introduced in this study. To understand the effect of PVIN on sand fixation, the strength test, water-retaining test and wind erosion test were performed. The results indicated that the presence of PVIN could improve the structural strength, water retaining and anti-wind erosion ability. When the sand-fixing agent was applied on the sand surface, the crust in surface layer was produced. The structural strength variations determined by micropenetrometer indicated that the specimens treated with concentrations of 1, 3, 5, 10, and 20% PVIN have produced the crusts with thickness being approximately 1, 2, 4–5, 5, and 5–6 mm and the strength being around 1, 4.5, 18, 26 and 41, respectively. This crust has a good water-absorption, water-retaining and anti-evaporation properties. It can also improve the anti-wind erosion ability, and also prevent the loose sand surface from forming a sand dune in the wind erosion conditions. Additionally, this sand-fixing agent has a low cost, it is easier to produce and apply and also produces no additional pollution. Therefore, this can be considered as an ideal soil-fixing agents to control sand erosion in the relatively arid and semiarid areas.

Abstract:Vegetation has good application in slope stabilization, but its beneficial effects on reinforcing topsoil are generally limited by the soil properties it was cultivated in. This study aims at evaluating the strength improvements of sand-root composite by treating with polyurethane polymer and hence investigating the mechanism of polymer-root-soil interactions. Vegetation roots were selected and mixed with dry sand and polymer solution to prepare remolded specimens. A series of experimental tests were then performed at different percentages of root content (0, 0.4, 0.8, 1.2, and 1.6 % by weight of dry sand) and polymer content (1, 2, and 4% by weight of dry sand) to evaluate the shear parameters and unconfined compressive strength (UCS). The combined mechanism was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. The results showed that the strengthening effect has greater efficiency with higher polymer content. Through varying contents of vegetation root, it was found that low root content induced an undesirable weakening effect on the strength of the treated soil. However, this situation was somewhat improved with the increase in root content. The good flexibility of polymers not only promote the capacity of soil to energy absorption, but also impart good ductility to soil. The presence of polymers greatly strengthens soil stability due to its special network structure, by which the improved shear resistance at the root-soil interface provides sufficient anchorage effect for the tensile strength of roots to be fully mobilized. Overall, the synergistic effect of root reinforcement and polymer treatment has the potential for its use in soil stabilization.

Abstract:This paper presented the preliminary results of desertification control in the field a new sand fixation material,which was made from straw pulping black-liquor.The field ecological measurement was conducted in a three-year old sand fixation community dominated by Agriophyllum squarrosum(L.) Moq.,and Artemisia desertorum Spreng..The results showed the lignin-based sand stabilization material(LSSM) can not only fix the fugitive dune but also make it vegetative fast since the arenaceous plants can be planted and grew well simultaneously with the LSSM implementation.It was found that the fixation shell formed by LSSM protected the soil water from evaporation effectively,and was beneficial to the plant growth and to the formation of stable community.As arenaceous plants community constructed,the organic matter and total nitrogen in the upper-level soil was increased significantly.It stimulated the increase of soil nutrition and consequently the plant growth.Compared with the traditional sand fixation method known as "straw-grid" technique,the utilization of LSSM speeded up the formation of microbiological-shell and the soil amelioration as.

Influence of biopolymer-vegetation interaction on soil hydro-mechanical properties under climate change: A review

Abstract:Soil reinforcement using eco-friendly biopolymer and vegetation has been increasingly popular in geotechnical engineering. However, research is still in its early stages due to complex biochemical interactions between biopolymers and plants. Moreover, under the increasing climate change, extreme weather poses severe challenges to the effectiveness of biopolymer-vegetation on soil treatment. Therefore, this paper provides a comprehensive review and summary of recent research on the influence of biopolymer and biopolymer-vegetation interaction on soil properties. First, this paper evaluates the various hydraulic and mechanical properties of soils after biopolymer treatment, including compaction characteristics, Atterberg limits, unconfined compressive strength, shear strength, tensile strength, permeability, water holding capacity, slaking behavior, and erosion resistance, as well as the influence of climate change. Then, the application of biopolymer-vegetation measure in the current field of soil treatment is summarized, and the biopolymer-vegetation interaction is discussed, including the influence of biopolymers on plant germination rate, growth conditions, wilting rate, and other indicators. Under drought and water scarcity conditions, biopolymers can improve soil mechanical strength and water retention, reducing plant wilting rate, and enhancing the survival ability of plants under extreme climate changes. Appropriate biopolymers can increase soil strength by >50 %, reduce strength and mass losses from dry-wet cycles to within 10 %, enhance grass seed germination rates by over 60 %, and reduce wilting rates under drought stress by 80 %. Finally, the research gaps and deficiencies in this field are highlighted, and potential research hotspots that can be strengthened and studied in the future are proposed. This review demonstrates the biopolymer-vegetation measure to be a new ecological restoration technology with widespread application prospects.
Preparation of superabsorbent polymer gel based on PVPP and its application in water-holding in sandy soil

Abstract:There have been a lot of reports on the preparation and properties of superabsorbent polymers, but there are still some problems and limitations in practical application. Therefore, a superabsorbent polymer (SAP) was synthesized by solution polymerization with tap water as reaction medium, acrylic acid and cross-linked polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVPP) as raw materials. The results of its performance and application show that the particle size was 0.425–0.85 mm, and the maximum water absorption rate of SAP in distilled water, tap water and 0.9% wt% NaCl solution was 2297 g/g, 333 g/g and 120 g/g, respectively. The water absorption rate can reach about 80% of maximum water absorption rate in 30 min. In addition, when the SAP mass addition amount was 0.56% and the particle size was 0.15–0.25 mm, the saturated moisture of sandy soil increased by 187%, the infiltration rate of sandy soil decreased by 96.7% and at 45 °C and 25 °C, the water evaporation rate of sandy soil decreased by 57.52% and 43.61%, respectively. So the material have a good application prospect in desertification and agriculture, and the way of preparation can be more effectively applied in practical production.

Abstract:Air-hardening organic polymer (AHOP), a new soil stabilizer, can form a cross-link among soil particles with high strength and toughness. In this study, the effect of the polymer content and density on the mechanical behavior of stabilized silty sand was investigated. The results indicate that the unconfined compressive strength and tensile strength of stabilized silty sand keep a prominent linear relationship with AHOP content that increases with the increment in density; the increment in AHOP content also leads to a higher elastic modulus of stabilized silty sand. The cohesion was also significantly enhanced by the increase in AHOP content and density; the internal friction angle of loose specimens ( ρ≤1.50 g/cm3 ) keeps increasing with AHOP content; however, for dense specimens ( ρ≥1.55 g/cm3 ), 3% polymer content is a turning point, at which the internal friction angle changes nonmonotonically. AHOP film can connect loose silty sand particles and adhere to the surface of particles, leading to silty sand with good strength properties. Based on failure modes, the failure of polymer–particle interactions can be divided into four modes, including (1) tensile fracture at membrane, (2) tensile fracture at polymer–particle interface, (3) shear at membrane, and (4) shear at polymer–particle interface.

Abstract:Vegetation is a sustainable strategy for erosion control and slope stabilization, though its initial cultivation can be lengthy and potentially weaken soil structures. This study compared two bio-mediated ground improvement techniques, biopolymer and biochar, known for their supportive effects on vegetation growth. Additionally, a novel treatment combining biopolymer and biochar was examined for its potential in vegetated-engineering practices. Engineering performance was assessed through soil water characteristic curve, vegetation growth, direct shear testing, and rainfall simulation. The results revealed that biopolymer and biochar treatments enhanced soil water capacity but negatively impacted vegetation germination rates and shear strength of the reinforced soil, attributed to hydrogel formation and increased soil water content from irrigation. In comparison, soil reinforced with the combined method showed a promotion in the vegetation while maintaining the soil’s mechanical performance throughout the cultivation period and exhibited only minor reductions in the shear strength compared to other reinforced soils. Moreover, the new treatment showed improved soil erodibility under a majority of rainfall occasions, regardless of the vegetation coverage. This enhanced engineering performance by the new treatment is believed to be the polymerisation between the biopolymer hydrogel, biochar and soil particles.

Abstract:Red bed composite polymers composed of weathered red bed soil, adhesive materials, and water-retaining materials have been applied as a new type of material for environmental restoration. However, the promotion and application of this material has been limited by a lack of understanding of its action mechanism in environmental restoration. The objective of this study is to innovatively propose a water‒soil-air‒plant mutual feedback mechanism based on this material. Therefore, water‒soil-air‒plant mutual feedback tests were conducted in this study under 3 initial water contents and 10 red bed composite polymers ratios. Key parameters, namely, water content, soil conductivity, pH, temperature, O 2 and CO 2 contents, pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) germination number and plant height were monitored and analyzed. As the results, a mutual feedback mechanism driving water retention, soil consolidation, air retention, and plant rooting was revealed under the application of red bed composite polymers. And, suitable environments and optimal compositions for this material are proposed. The study results provide a theoretical basis for the large-scale application of red bed composite polymers.

Abstract:Soil quality is one of the main limiting factor in the development of the food sector in arid areas, mainly due to its poor mechanics and lack of water retention. Soil's organic carbon is nearly absent in arid soils, though it is important for water and nutrient transport, to soil mechanics, to prevent erosion, and as a long-term carbon sink. In this study, we evaluate the potential benefits that are brought to inert sand by the incorporation of a range of, mainly, cellulosic networks in their polymeric or structured (fiber) forms, analogously to those found in healthy soils. We explore the impact of a wide range of nonfood polysaccharide-based amendments, including pulp fibers, nanocellulose, cellulose derivatives, and other readily available polysaccharide structures derived from arthropods (chitosan) or fruit peels (pectin) residues. A practical methodology is presented to form sand-polymer composites, which are evaluated for their soil mechanics as a function of humidity and the dynamics of their response to water. The mechanics are correlated to the network of polymers formed within the pores of the sandy soil, as observed by electron microscopy. The response to water is correlated to both the features of the network and the individual polysaccharides' physicochemical features. We expect this work to provide a rapid and reproducible methodology to benchmark sustainable organic amendments for arid soils.

Abstract:The preparation method and properties of water glass-acetic ether, plant tannin extract macromolecule chemical sand fixation slurry and pillared montmorillonite as well as aluminum-deficient zeolite are described in this paper. The pillared montmorillonite, aluminum-deficient zeolite, SAP, and radical elements were mixed together in a definite proportion and mode to preparecomplex water-rich nutrition package, which possesses the function of preserving water, fertifizer and soil moisture. Experiments have proved that nutrition package can let the seedling safely pass through a period of trimester survivorship in sandy soil under the conditions of remarkable differences in day and night temperature, no water, no fertilizer and no safeguard of vegetation. The paper puts forward a new idea on desert control on the basis of characteristics of two kinds of sand fixation slurry materials and functions of nutrition package. Chemical sand fixation slurry material is used to fix up quicksand in a relatively large area and create a relatively stable environment for tree growth. Then nutrition package is used for single tree growth when numerous plants form great forest straps and woodlands. In this way, underground preservation of water, surface sand fixation and forest growths can form a three-dimensional comprehensive capacity for desert control.
