Abstract:The principle and implementing method of non-contact thread parameter inspection based on laser triangular measurement principle were presented. An inspection instrument was designed and produced, which included axial displacement measurement module, transverse displacement measurement module and a module to deal with, control and assess the data in the upper system. The algorithm for inspecting the main parameters of the thread was given. The inspection and estimate of the thread contour curve were completed by using laser gauge to measure the dimension of the thread contour curve in the transverse section, and using raster to measure the axial displacement of the precision worktable under the thread test criterion. The inspection resolution of the equipment is 1.5 μm, which can meet most requests from customers. This instrument can solve the distortion problem caused by contact measurement, control the manufacturing quality of the thread, and improve the inspection precision and efficiency.

Abstract:This paper researched on the characteristic of circle, line and area of 2-D mechanical parts. The non-contact vision inspection system is based on labVIEW and IMAQ Vision, and the main hardware include GIGE camera, image acquisition and the NI PXI-1042 platform. The system uses image processing and analysis technology, such as image filtering, smoothing processing, local enhancement and edge detection to complete the work of size measurement. According to the contrast testing results, this system has characteristics of less time-consuming, quick inspection speed and high measurement accuracy, which completely satisfies the requirements.

Abstract:This paper describes an automated visual inspection system for the size measurement of workpieces, widely applicable to industrial on-line and real-time products inspection such as bearing, gear and so on. The systematic makeup, basis demands and CCD-based size measurement principle is introduced. To increase the efficiency and effect of pre-processing image, take a bearing as an example, fast algorithm for 2-D median filter is advanced and investigated. Also, based on the fundamental theory of the wavelet transform, an edge detection method is successfully used in the feature extraction of a bearing image. Finally, with the studied automated visual inspection system, the out-diameter of a bearing is inspected and analyzed. The result meets demands and shows the system has a broad applied foreground

Abstract:Based on the theory of laser measurements, we propose a novel laser-based automatic inspection system for measuring the internal thread parameters, which integrates the laser-based measuring unit to detect the longitudinal section of the thread profile and the dual-axis moving stage for the movement of an undetected object. We design a special laser probe based on the bidirectional inclination scanning method for obtaining the thread-profile data. This method and structural design enables the laser probe to overcome the shortcomings of traditional methods for measuring large inclined surfaces and eliminate the impact of the lead angle. We compare our results of internal thread-parameter measurements with the coordinate measuring machine (CMM) system and investigate the repeatability with one internal screw ring gage by the system proposed. The experimental results show that the measurement accuracy of the thread angle is 2′ and the other parameters are less than 4 μm.

Abstract:In the non-contact detection of thread profile boundary correction, it remains challenging to ensure that the thread axis intersects the CCD camera axis perpendicularly. Here, we addressed this issue using modified algorithms. We established the Cartesian coordinate system according to the spatial geometric relationship of the thread. We used the center of the bottom of the thread as the origin, and the image of the extreme position image was replaced by the image of the approximate extreme position. In addition, we analyzed the relationship between the boundary of the theoretical thread image and the theoretical profile. We calculated the coordinate transformation of the point on the theoretical tooth profile and the coordinate function of the point on the boundary of the theoretical image. At the same time, the extreme value of the function was obtained, and the boundary equation of the theoretical thread image was deduced. The difference equation between the two functions was used to correct the boundary point of the actual thread image, and the fitting results were used to detect the key parameters of the external thread of the cylinder. Further experiment proves that the above algorithm effectively improves the detection accuracy of thread quality, and the detection error of main geometric parameters is reduced by more than 50 %.

Abstract:An automatic non-contact measuring system for extracting the parameters of a screw thread was developed. It was integrated with a laser-based measuring unit for the longitudinal section of the thread profile and the dual-axis moving stage position system for the movement of the undetected object. Firstly, data points from the thread profile were collected by the measuring system, the non-uniform rational B-spline curve (NURBS) method with the minimal error constraints was used to carry out the fitting of the measured data and data partitioning was performed. Secondly, according to the processed data, the parameters, such as thread pitch, pitch diameter and half of thread angle, can be calculated. Thirdly, the errors were analyzed for the proposed system. Finally, the proposed system and method were verified for their good performance with acceptable accuracy and reliability. Compared with existing measurement methods, the designed non-contact optical measuring system was capable of measuring the parameters of the internal thread which is no less than the M4 and external thread with required accuracy.

Abstract:The quality of thread will directly affect the reliability of mechanical system, and the accuracy grade of geometric parameters is the judgment standard to thread quality. Thus, its particularly important to detect the geometric parameters of thread. Its a pretty mature and widely used method to measure thread parameters with universal tool-measuring microscope, but it has many shortcomings, such as tedious operation, low efficiency and the reading error. In view of the above shortcomings, the paper does some simple refits to the existing 19JA universal tool-measuring microscope. In order to improve reading speed and accuracy, the grating rulers are installed on the operating platform in two directions. CCD camera is used to get external thread image instead of human eyes and the eyepiece, which is a non-contact measurement method. A software that based on MFC of VC + + 6.0 is written, which can deal with the thread image and get the thread parameters. The experimental results show that the method can not only effectively improve the measurement efficiency but also guarantee the accuracy of measurement.
Automatic Measurement of External Thread at the End of Sucker Rod Based on Machine Vision

Abstract:Aiming at the low efficiency of manual measurement of threads and the lack of practicability in machine vision measurement before, online size measurement of threads at the end of sucker rods based on machine vision was studied. A robotic arm is used to carry an optical device to achieve high-quality image acquisition of threads. Based on the prior knowledge of the thread profile angle, the directional edge detection operator is customized to achieve the accurate detection of the left and right edges of the thread. Noise filtering, sorting, and left and right edge-matching algorithms based on connected domains are developed to eliminate the interference effects of electrostatic dust and oil pollution in online measurement, and the dimension of thread profile angles, pitches, major diameters, and minor diameters can be precisely calculated. The experimental results show that the screw thread parameter measurement time is about 0.13 s; the maximum and minimum average errors of the thread angles are 0.011° and 0.632°, respectively; and the total average deviation is less than 0.08°. For the screw thread pitch, major diameter, minor diameter, and pitch diameter parameter measurement, the deviation of the measurement results between the proposed method and the universal tool microscope (UTM) method is less than 10 μm. It fully proves the effectiveness and accuracy of the method in this paper and, at the same time, shows that the method has good real-time performance and high application significance, which lays a good foundation for the subsequent online thread measurement.

Abstract:A machine-vision method was used to build a three-dimensional measurement system using a measurement algorithm and a perspective transformation. The image data from a double complementary metal oxide semiconductor were transmitted to a notebook personal computer to calculate the parameters. A three-dimensional measurement system for obtaining its feature points in the world coordinate system was used to calculate the measurement data. The experimental results were verified with a more precise measurement equipment, automatic transformer observation system. The three-dimensional measurement system introduced here was applied to two case studies. The first case considered the measurement of hole diameters, such as those found in the cylinder head of an internal combustion engine. By summarizing various experimental results based on studies of three kinds of hole designs, the maximum error was 0.373 mm and the minimum error was 0.053 mm, which is within the general range of manufacturing tolerances (±0.5 mm) used in engineering schematics. The second case examined the measurement of certain key dimensions of an aggregate truck bed, and the results showed that the measured difference between the three-dimensional method and automatic transformer observation system is less than 1.2%. The proposed three-dimensional measurement system is inexpensive, offers an easy set up, and provides a certain amount of accuracy and stability.

Abstract:In the realm of industrial inspection, the precise assessment of internal thread quality is crucial for ensuring mechanical integrity and safety. However, challenges such as limited internal space, inadequate lighting, and complex geometry significantly hinder high-precision inspection. In this study, we propose an innovative automated internal thread detection scheme based on machine vision, aimed at addressing the time-consuming and inefficient issues of traditional manual inspection methods. Compared with other existing technologies, this research significantly improves the speed of internal thread image acquisition through the optimization of lighting and image capturing devices. To effectively tackle the challenge of image stitching for complex thread textures, an internal thread image stitching technique based on a cylindrical model is proposed, generating a full-view thread image. The use of the YOLOv8 model for precise defect localization in threads enhances the accuracy and efficiency of detection. This system provides an efficient and intuitive artificial intelligence solution for detecting surface defects on geometric bodies in confined spaces.

It can meet the testing requirements of the external screw taper thread and has wide application perspective.

Abstract:Computer vision measurement systems have become more and more widely used in industrial production processes. Traditional manual measurement methods cannot guarantee product quality. Therefore, it is of great significance to improve the technology level of the manufacturing industry to study the automatic measurement system for the dimension of shaft parts with low cost, high precision, and high efficiency. A geometric part measurement system for shaft parts based on machine vision is presented in this paper. It uses the CCD camera to get the image. First, it preprocesses the collected images. In view of the influence of the noise and other factors, the wavelet denoising is used to denoise the image. Then, an improved single pixel edge detection method is proposed based on the Canny detection operator to extract the edge contour of the part image. Finally, the geometrical quantity algorithm is applied to the measurement research, and the measured data are obtained and analyzed. The experimental results show that the repeatability error of the system is less than 0.01 mm.

The system can meet the testing requirements of the external screw taper thread and has wide application perspective.

Abstract:In order to increase the precision and efficiency of the inner diameter measurement for small springwire socket,a system based on computer vision is developed.The ring LEDs are used as the double sources in this photoelectricity system.A new image processing method is put forward to calculate the inner diameter.The software of the system is designed by VC++ 6.0 to complete the whole system.The experimental results show that the measuring error of this system is ±2mm in measurement range of 0.5~4mm.The system is characterized by easy operation and high speed measurement.

Abstract:Fault detection is an important step in gear production, but the traditional methods are inefficient. In this paper, a novel method for gear parameter measurement is proposed based on computer vision. First, we introduce the hardware composition of a system and the main structure of the software algorithm. Next, we discuss the principles of digital image pre-processing, image segmentation, and image analysis and also analyse the detailed steps, including gear centre positioning, gear tooth root radius calculation, and the addendum circle radius calculation. Finally, we show how the other parameters of the gear can be calculated using formulas, and how possible faults can be detected accordingly. This method is simple and requires neither edge detection nor Hough transformation. Experiments show that the system is stable and fast and that it can meet the needs of gear parameter measurement, replacing manual detection in actual production.

Abstract:Automatic measurements via image processing can accelerate measurements and provide comprehensive evaluations of mechanical parts. This paper presents a comprehensive approach to automating evaluations of planar dimensions in mechanical parts, providing significant advancements in terms of cost-effectiveness, accuracy, and repeatability. The methodology employed in this study utilizes a configuration comprising commonly available products in the industrial computer vision market, therefore enabling precise determinations of external contour specifications for mechanical components. Furthermore, it presents a functional prototype for making planar measurements by incorporating an improved subpixel edge-detection method, thus ensuring precise image-based measurements. The article highlights key concepts, describes the measurement procedures, and provides comparisons and traceability tests as a proof of concept for the system. The results show that this vision system did achieve suitable precision, with a mean error of 0.008 mm and a standard deviation of 0.0063 mm, when measuring gauge blocks of varying lengths at different heights. Moreover, when evaluating a circular sample, the system resulted in a maximum deviation of 0.013 mm, compared to an alternative calibrated measurement machine. In conclusion, the prototype validates the methods for planar dimension evaluations, highlighting the potential for enhancing manual measurements, while also maintaining accessibility. The presented system expands the possibilities of machine vision in manufacturing, especially in cases where the cost or agility of current systems is limited.

Abstract:Aiming at the features and difficulties internal and external screwthread detection, a non -contact measurement system is proposed, which is based on the technologies of laser displacement probing, grating displacement inspection, fine mechanics, computer real-time control and data processing. The system features the solution of 2 μm, the precision of ±30 μm and the detection bandwidth of 2 kHz. Experiments prove that this device can measure many parameters, such as thread depth, pressure angle, pitch, and also including taper angles of both internal and external screwthreads quickly and accurately. In this article, the system composition, measurement principle, and data processing of host PC are described. The system error sources and the way to improve the system precision are also analyzed.

Abstract:As an important component of the fasteners members, threads quality, depending on whether its geometric parameters meet requirements or not, will affect the reliability of the whole machine system. Therefore, geometrical parameters measurement of the thread is especially important. Aiming at the characteristics of the thread teeth type, this paper adopt a machine vision measurement method based on the universal tool microscope and CCD .This paper also analyzes the causes and influences of the teeth shading and proposes a corresponding improvement method, specific to the shading problem in the process of backlighting projection. After experimenting, this method can effectively improve the accuracy and efficiency of the male parameters measurement.
