Abstract:Efficient separation and high-valued utilization of coal gasification ash or slag limit the clean and green development of coal chemical industry. In this paper, a coal-water slurry gasification fine slag (CWSFS) was studied by wet screening and classification. The relationship between the particle composition with different sizes and the structural characteristics was investigated by means of proximate analysis, XRF, XRD, BET and SEM. A classification method of CWSFS was proposed to guide the high-valued utilization of coal gasification slag. Then, dry separation of a coal-water slurry gasification fine slag was carried out using a combined treatment method of crushing and dissociation and airflow classification. The results show that the CWSFS particles of different sizes have obvious differences in fixed carbon content, ash composition and mineral types. For the CWSFS with the particle size above 74 μm, the fixed carbon content is more than 60%, the calorific value is more than 20 MJ/kg, the specific surface area is relatively high and the main component is the residual carbon that contains magnetite and brookite. For the CWSFS with particle sizes between 13–74 μm, the fixed carbon content is between 20%–60%, the calorific value is between 11–19 MJ/kg, the specific surface area is small and the main mineral types are pyroxene, marcasite and hematite, etc. For the CWSFS with a particle size between 0–13 μm, the fixed carbon content is less than 20% and the calorific value is less than 10 MJ/kg, which mainly includes the amorphous glass phase that was rich in aluminum, iron and calcium, quartz and a small amount of fayalite, muscovite and other minerals. According to the fixed carbon content of CWSFS with different particle sizes, the above three components with varying particle size ranges are defined as high-carbon component, medium-carbon component and low-carbon component, respectively. The dry separation test shows that the air flow crushing and classification process can achieve a higher product yield of 29.60% and a high ignition loss of 93.76%, compared to the traditional disc crushing-classification process. Airflow crushing was proved to be able to effectively increase the dissociation degree of residual carbon and greatly improve the separation and enrichment rate of residual carbon.

Abstract:The accurate classification of coarse coal slime is the premise of efficient separation. Deep Cone Hydraulic Classifier (DCHC) is a new classification equipment for coarse coal slime classification, the content of fine particles (-0.2 mm) in coarse coal slime can be effectively reduced through classification, so as to create suitable feeding granularity for teetered bed separator (TBS) sorting. The DCHC designed includes a column structure area, deep cone structure area, and flush water mode of “bottom water + central water”. Experiments on the impact parameters were carried out, the results showed that: the classification efficiency increased with the decrease of feed concentration and feeding speed, increased first and then decreased with the increase of flush water flow rate. When the feed concentration was 40%, feeding speed is 0.8 m/s and flush water flow rate was 4 m3/h, the classification efficiency reached 69.3%, the content of the −0.2 mm particles in the bottom flow products was only 1.9%. The classification mechanism showed that the column structure area realized fluidization of the flow field and the deep cone structure area supplied the movement trace for the particles. Particularly the −0.074 mm particles movement trace was clear along the cone wall and could be collected as an overflow. A part of the −0.125 mm particles could be collected as an overflow, whereas the remaining part returned to the bottom flow, and increased fine particles content. In addition, the +0.2 mm particles were mostly collected as a bottom flow, and the 0.2–0.3 mm particles content are obviously affected by operating parameters. The results not only provide a new idea for the development of new classification equipment, but also provide a pathway for the efficient classification of coarse coal slime.

Abstract:Due to the challenges of separation and high costs, coal slime is often directly burned without further separation processing, leading to environmental pollution. Therefore, a feed-regulated water-only cyclone has been proposed to improve the coal slime separation efficiency by controlling the suspended bed. This method optimizes particle characteristics by incorporating a pre-desliming hydrocyclone, the characteristics of particles were optimized to regulate the hindered settling in suspension layer. Response surface experiments were conducted to investigate the impact of structural parameters on separation efficiency, Additionally, under optimal parameter conditions, particle size and density were characterized, and a simulation analysis was conducted using CFD–EDEM. The results showed that the maximum separation efficiency achieved in the experiment was 35.31%. Particle characterization analysis also revealed that, after feed regulation, the proportion of particles with a size of 0.045 mm within high density exceeded 75%. Industrial application experiments demonstrated the feasibility of obtaining a high-quality coal product with over screen yield of 9.29% and an ash content of 9.47%. This transformation of coal slurry into a valuable resource has generated significant economic benefits for enterprises and will address the environmental pollution issue caused by direct combustion and improper disposal. Experimental study on pore structure and mechanical dehydration of coal gasification fine slag

Abstract:Coal gasification fine slag is a kind of solid waste with high carbon content produced in the process of coal gasification. There is an urgent need to analyze the various pore sizes and their characteristics, and then design a proper method for dewatering gasification fine slag. In this study the low-temperature adsorption analysis, high-pressure injection analysis (mercury porosimetry) as well as the two types of filter press are used to first analyze the gasification slag pore characteristics and then dewatering efficiency, respectively. Results show that the full pore size combined analysis method portray that the pore size increases rapidly between 100 ~ 2000 nm, which is significantly different and larger than the pore size at low-temperature nitrogen adsorption analysis (4.37 nm). As a result, the combined pore size method of high-pressure mercury injection and low-temperature nitrogen adsorption predicts more precise results. Micropores, transition pores, mesopores, and macropores account for 6.62%, 7.84%, 18.46%, and 67.08% of the total. A filter press with a diaphragm plate and frame is an efficient dewatering device for fine coal gasification slag. The final filter cake moisture is 50.87%, which is significantly lower than the vacuum belt filter with 69.22%. A new option for coal gasification fine slag dewatering equipment is the ultra high-pressure filter press; the moisture content of filter cake obtained is 44.70%, and the dewatering effect is outstanding. This study will help to better design the dehydration methods of the wet slags. Ultimately, it will help recycling the water, reducing the ash quantity as well as the cost of the ash landfill.

Abstract:Microfine low-rank coals are subject to metamorphic changes that hinder their floatability, impeding their clean and efficient utilization. The objective of this study was to refine the jet-slurry technique to enhance the floatability of microfine low-rank coals. Furthermore, advanced methods including Focused beam reflectance measurement (FBRM), high-sensitivity microelectromechanical balancer (DCAT), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were employed to dissect the physicochemical effects of jet slurring on microfine low-rank coal particles. The study found that as the concentration of microfine coal particles increased, surface reagent adsorption initially rose and then fell with greater feed volumes. In contrast, adhesion forces displayed an inverse trend. Optimal results were achieved with a feed volume set at 25 L/min. This phenomenon is attributable to multiple regulatory factors. Within certain limits, intensifying conditioning promotes particle agglomeration, curtails fine gangue mineral coverage, boosts sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) adsorption, diminishes microfine coal wettability, and better kerosene-coal particle mixing. However, at excessive jet speeds (30 L/min), substantial physical pressure variances and mechanical dispersion forces arise, undermining SDS or kerosene's chemical adsorption to coal or modified coal, thus reducing reagent attachment. The aforementioned study demonstrates that within certain parameters, jet slurring significantly betters coal-gangue separation, thereby amplifying the flotation efficacy of microfine low-rank coals. This research offers strategic insights into microfine low-rank coal flotation processes and lays a theoretical groundwork for the selection of suitable techniques and reagents.

Abstract:t is essential to remove gangue minerals associated with coal as they are harmful, and easy to cause environmental problems if the utilization process is not sustainable. To achieve this, various separation technologies including dry separation methods have been developed. As two-thirds of recoverable coal in China is reserved in water-lack areas, the development and research into dry separation methods has attracted more and more interests and also becomes the focus of the presented work. Besides a focusing on beneficiation of −6+3 mm and −3+1 mm coal particles, this paper aimed to propose a novel separation technology, namely the active pulsing air separation system (APASS). The response surface methodology (RSM) was used to investigate the effects of operational parameters, including airflow rate, pulsing frequency and feed rate, on separation results of two narrowly sized coal samples. Experimental results indicated that separation densities of two coals were similar, and the coarse one showed a relatively higher separation precision. Due to the high yield of particles around separation density and collision among particles, separation results were not good enough as the deash degree was only about 10%. To improve the product quality, the primary and secondary separation flowsheet of the active pulsing air separation system is proposed.

Abstract:A gravity – flotation coupled separator with up-flow feeding and dual-concentrate was developed to improve the recovery and selectivity in coarse coal slime separation. The separator combines flotation, cyclone separation, and gravity sedimentation. The optimal separation performance was achieved under the following conditions: slurry concentration = 100 g/L, feed flow rate = 4.411 m 3 /h, circulating rate = 3.125 m 3 /h, fifigfeeding air flow rate = 2 m 3 /h, frother dosage = 150 g/t and collector dosage = 1500 g/t. Two concentrates were obtained with ash contents of 7.48% and 11.56%. The partition coefficients of the 0.75–1 and 0.5–0.75 mm fractions were 88.42% and 95.92%, respectively, indicating the satisfactory recovery of coarse particles. The ash content in the tailings was 66.08%, indicating good selectivity. The diverging flow under the froth layer produced a coarse concentrate, which improved the recovery of the concentrate and reduced the flotation concentrate ash content. The total recovery of the concentrate blended with the + 0.25 mm fraction of diverging flow was 84.00%. Both up-flow and cyclone separation are beneficial for coarse particle recovery. The static separation cone is instrumental in improving the separation effect. Therefore, this wide-sized coal-slime separator facilitates the effective separation of both coarse and fine particles.

Abstract:This paper presents a comprehensive evaluation of the influence of coal particle size gradation on the properties of coal–water slurry (CWS), including coal concentration, flowability, stability, and rheological behavior. The research findings indicate that coarse coal particles have a dominant effect on improving the coal concentration of CWS, while fine coal particles significantly contribute to enhancing the flowability and stability of CWS. Also, a gradation approach incorporating both coarse and fine components with continuous particle size distributions was explored, successfully achieving a high performance CWS with a high coal concentration of 66.12 wt%, a flow time of 13.37 s indicating excellent flowability, and a water separation rate of 3.49 wt% after standing for 7 days, demonstrating good stability. Furthermore, the validity of these research results was confirmed by zeta potential analyses and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) investigations.

Abstract:A modification coarse coal-slime separation process used three-stage cone water-only cyclones (TWOCs) as the main separating equipment was designed and evaluated for Lv-jiatuo coking-coal preparation plant. Laboratory experiment was performed to guide the parameters determination of the industrialness TWOC. The industrialess TWOC is expanded five times according to the equal proportion of the laboratory TWOC. The stability of the modification system is obviously higher than that of the original system, the optimal parameters combination of the industrialness TWOC was determined as 500 mm cylinder height, 225 mm vortex finder, 267 mm insertion-depth of the vortex finder and 0.08 MPa feed pressure. After the modification, the clean-coal ash decreases from about 13.00% to 11.45%, the separation density (δ 50 ) and possibility deviation (E P ) value of the TWOC are 1.49 and 0.085 g/cm 3 , respectively. Plant's yearly profit increases 13.54 million Chinese yuan (CNY), the static investment recovery period is 0.22 years.

Abstract:Low-volatile coal water slurry(CWS) has an advantage over washed coal CWS in price obviously.When CWS is applied in a boiler,besides the stability of inflammation and combustion,slagging characteristic is another important factor to affect safety and economy in operation of the boiler.Low-volatile CWS was used in large-scale boilers and slagging experiment was processed using silicon carbide rods.This paper used coal ash analysis,changing tendency of slag thickness,mass and deposition rate,X-ray diffractometer(XRD) and scanning electron microscope(SEM),a slagging characteristic decision model based on fuzzing mathematics to predict the slagging,and get the slagging characteristic of low-volatile CWS.The result indicates that the slagging of low-volatile CWS is in an acceptable extent.

Abstract:Low-rank steam coal is an important coal resource, but has high water and ash content, which needs to be separated to improve its quality and calorific value. In this paper, the process of screening using a flip-flow screen and density separator using a shallow groove dense-medium separator for steam coal was proposed and applied to the Lijiahao coal preparation plant. Kinematics of the screen box and the surface of the flip-flow screen were investigated using an acceleration and laser displacement measurement and analysis system. The mechanism of the flip-flow screen to overcome aperture blocking and to enhance the screening performance for moist and fine coal was discussed. The results from an industrial experiment when screening at 3 mm showed that the screening efficiency was 82.51%, while the total misplaced materials were 5.91%. The commercial separation of a wide size range of coal using a shallow groove dense-medium separator was analyzed. The results showed that the system exhibited satisfactory separation performance for 100–3 mm coal, whereas the corresponding Ep value was found to be 0.06 g/cm3. Compared with the 6 mm separation system, the yield of clean coal increased by 8.50%, which remarkably increased the economic benefits for the company.

Combined Process of Air Classification and Coal Cleaning with Air-Solid Fluidized Bed

Abstract:A force balance or motion equation of a particle in air solid fluidized bed was set up and analyzed. An appropriate size fraction which could be effectively separated in air solid fluidized bed was determined through theoretical analysis and tests. The problems in controlling upper size and lower size of feed into an air solid fluidized bed were discussed, and then an air classification technology of moist raw coal was introduced. Pilot Test results show that 1) the air flow has a good washing effect on the surfaces of coarse coal particles in air classification, and nearly all coal dusts smaller than 1 mm were washed off from the coarse particles by air flow. As a result, the coal dust content is as low as 0.2% in the coarse particle product. This is very favorable for stabilizing the fluidized bed density and reducing the burden of medium purification; 2) air classification has a effect on fines product. As far as the tested coal is concerned, the ash of fines product obtained by air classification is 1.7% lower than the ash of the same size fraction in feed, and 7.5% less than the feed ash because of the density difference between the clean and the waste. A combined process of air classification and coal cleaning with air solid fluidized bed is put forward, which can optimize coal dry cleaning process, and then reduce the construction and operation costs by more than 50%.

Abstract:Coal gasification fine slag (CGFS) from the entrained-flow coal gasification process mainly contains ash and residual carbon. Currently, the CGFS is normally stacked and landfilled in slag yards, resulting in huge resources waste and potential environmental risks. This study aims to review the research advances of the characterizations, carbon-ash separation and resource utilization of CGFS, so as to reveal the guiding role of CGFS characterizations on the process of separation and resource utilization. In this paper, the characterizations of CGFS are summarized from compositions, structures and dehydration. Methods for separating carbon-ash from CGFS are compared and analyzed. The resource utilization methods of CGFS are reviewed from direct utilization and high-value utilization. Moreover, the future research directions of carbon-ash separation and resource utilization are briefly discussed. Accordingly, this review identifies that particle size is a key factor determining the structure and composition of CGFS. Based on the analysis of the CGFS characterizations, froth flotation shows great application potential for carbon-ash separation from CGFS under the premise of reagent recycling. Blending combustion as the main direction of CGFS resource utilization should be considered. Although the synthesis of porous materials from CGFS is conducive to improving the environmental benefits of coal gasification plants, the optimization research on the preparation methods of CGFS-based porous materials is urgently needed.

Abstract:The combustion residues of Xinwen coal water slurry (CWS) and black liquor coal slurry (CS) were studied. The typical combustion ashes sampled from different locations such as furnace wall, silicon carbide rod, heat flux probe et al. were analyzed in detail, including the chemical composition, mineral component, element distribution and microstructure. The results show that the content of compound and mineral phase comprising Al, Fe, Ca in the ash from combustion of CWS is higher than that of CS, while the case of Na, K, S and Cl is opposite. The enrichment of Fe in the ash is the reason of fouling and slagging during combustion of CWS, but Na and Fe are the essential mineral elements for the ash deposition of CS. Na plays more important role than Fe in the forming and developing of ash deposit in combustion of CS. The ash samples of CS are composed of many sodium rich and fusing temperature low minerals, such as nepheline, thenardite and hauyne.
