Abstract:Cube-corner retroreflector is a high precision component, which is often used as a cooperative target of laser rangefinder. The errors of three right angles of a Cube-corner retroreflector influence directly the measurement range and precision of the laser rangefinder. And the analytical result is derived and demonstrated with a large mumber of formulas.The author pointed out that even a small error of any angle can not be neglected during the high-precision measurement.In this paper,the reflecting characteristic of the ideal Cube-corner retroreflector is analyzed with vector expression method. At the same time, the relationship between right angle errors and reflected beam is given by the quantitative analysis.

Abstract:The far-field diffraction pattern (FFDP) of a corner cube retroreflector (CCR) determines the energy of a retroreflecting beam in some applications including laser ranging, optical communication, and satellite orbit calibration. The FFDP of an imperfect CCR is investigated analytically for the non-normal incidence of a polarized light beam. We first derive a complex amplitude of a retroreflecting beam in relation with multiple parameters including the errors of dihedral angle, flatness in a CCR, and polarization property of the CCR. Then a theoretical expression of the FFDP for a nonideal CCR is deduced as a function of multiple parameters by introducing the complex amplitude into a simplified Kirchhoff's diffraction equation. Some numerically simulated results of the FFDP are presented to give a visual illustration of the relationship between the FFDP and these parameters. Our findings suggest that a strong correlation between the FFDPs and multiple factors comprising the manufacturing errors, the polarization states, and the incident angles of the input beam as well as whether the reflecting faces of the CCR are coated or not. The FFDPs can be efficiently controlled by allocating the magnitudes of these factors. Moreover, experimental verification of the FFDP is also developed for a nonideal CCR coated with silver film on the reflecting faces at a non-normal incidence. The proposed mathematical model potentially offers beneficial ingredients towards optimizing design of a CCR by considering both the manufacturing errors and incident conditions of the input beam. Abstract:The optical properties of doubling the measurement accuracy using the cube-corner retroreflector which is applied to laser straightness measurement are analyzed in theory. The effects on straightness measurement are analyzed for the cube-corner retroreflector with angle errors, surface errors, yaw, pitch and roll. The analysis results are proved by experiments. The analysis results indicate that this work has provided the theoretical basis for analyzing error and error compensate during the laser straightness measurement with cube-corner retroreflector.

Abstract:The dihedral angle errors (DAEs) and flatness errors of a nonideal corner cube retroreflector (CCR) determine a ground-based optical instrument's received optical power. The smaller tolerance of the dihedral angle with lower divergence is theoretically beneficial to improving the received optical power but could increase the difficulty in the fabrication and bring about a higher manufacturing cost. We propose a new method that is just dependent on the curvature radius of the front-face (CROF) of the CCR to compensate for the divergence of the output beam from the CCR caused by the DAEs. We build up a mathematical model of the received optical power based on the far-field diffraction pattern (FFDP) of the CCR and the layout of the optical instrument and investigate the effects of the DAEs and the CROF on the FFDP and the received optical power for both the coated and uncoated CCRs. Meanwhile, we present a fitting equation between the compensative CROF and the DAEs based on the principle of maximizing the received optical power. The results demonstrate that the compensative CROF has no dependence on whether the reflecting-faces of the CCR are coated or not and is inversely proportional to the absolute value of DAEs. The received optical power is promptly enhanced by utilizing the compensative CROF. Therefore, it is more feasible to improve the received optical power of the ground-based optical instrument by manipulating the CROF of the CCR rather than the DAEs.

Abstract:In this paper, a new method of calculating the diffraction efficiency for diffraction / refraction infrared hybrid system is given. By using this method, an automatic measurement system is designed. This system covers the wavelength range of 1 similar to 3 mu m, 3 similar to 5 mu m and 8 similar to 12 mu m. We use a blackbody as the energy source, put the lens which is to be measured above a computer controlled turntable in order to gain different results in different filed of view. We also have several relay lenses to cope with long or negative focal length. We use two types of detectors to deal with wavelength range of 1 similar to 3 mu m and 3 similar to 12 mu m. Both the detector and preamplifier are assembled together so we can easily change them for different wavelength ranges. To improve the accuracy of the measurements, a new theory of measuring the main energy is developed to minimize the negative impacts of other diffraction orders and the environment. We use an adjustable slit cooperating with a two-axis stage to scan the focal point and by adjusting the width of the slit we can reduce the energy of other diffraction orders and the environment that may come into our detector. During the experiment process we can manually control the slit and two-axis stage to improve the efficiency and use our computer program to improve the accuracy. The energy modulator and lock-in amplifier also help to improve the accuracy of our system. We designed two standard lenses for the 3 similar to 5 mu m wavelength range. Both of them are made of the same material, have the same focal length of 200mm and their shape is almost the same. The only difference between them is that one of them is pure refraction piece which acts as a reference and the other one has a diffraction surface to achromatic aberration. The result fits our theory well and the possible causes of the differences are discussed. This system has a practical meaning in the quality evaluating of infrared hybrid system.

Abstract:The scattering of light by dielectric particles much larger than the wavelength of incident light is attributed to diffraction, external reflection and outgoing refracted waves. This paper focuses on diffraction and external reflection by faceted particles, which can be calculated semi-analytically based on physical optics. Three approximate methods; the surface-integral method (SIM), the volume-integral method (VIM), and the diffraction plus reflection pattern from ray optics (DPR) are compared. Four elements of the amplitude scattering matrix in the SIM and the VIM are presented in an explicit form. Of interest is that diffraction and external reflection are separable in the SIM, whereas they are combined in the VIM. A feature of zero forward reflection is noticed in the SIM. The applicability of the DPR method is restricted to particles with random orientations. In the manner of van de Hulst, we develop a new technique to compute the reflection pattern of randomly oriented convex particles using spheres with the same refractive index, resulting in an improvement in the precision of the reflection calculation in near-forward and near-backward directions. The accuracy of the aforementioned three methods is investigated by comparing their results with those from the discrete-dipole-approximation (DDA) method for hexagonal particles at the refractive index of 1.3+i1.0. For particles with fixed orientations, it is found that the SIM and the VIM are comparable in accuracy and applicable when the size parameter is on the order of 20. The ray-spreading effect on the phase function is evident from the results of various size parameters. For randomly oriented particles, the DPR is more efficient than the SIM and the VIM.

Abstract:Retro-reflective (RR) materials have received much attention due to their retro-reflective optical properties, which has essential differences with the diffuse reflection of traditional highly-reflective materials. As a guide to determine the performance improvement and the building applications of RR materials, the spectral characteristics are measured and related to the typical glass-bead and prism RR materials. The integrating sphere is used to measure the global reflectivity of the two RR materials, while a new instrument is developed to study the angular distribution and the retro-reflectivity of two RR materials at different incident angles. The results show that the global reflectivity is found to be 68.08% and 51.44% for the glass-bead and Prism RR materials, respectively, but the retro-reflectivity of the prism RR material is 12.56% higher than that for the glass-bead RR materials. The RR materials display the greatest different for the retro-reflectivity under the different radiation wavelengths. The variation trend of the retro-reflectivity is distinct for different wavelength ranges: the higher the wavelength, the lower the retro-reflectivity. Increasing the incident angle could reduce the retro-reflective property of the RR materials, and the incident angle had a high impact on radiation wavelengths less than 1200 nm. With the incident angle increased from 0° to 80°, the retro-reflectivity is reduced by 40.58–48.60% for the 800 nm wavelength, 35.40–45.13% for the 900 nm, 23.43–26.01% for 1000–1200 nm, and 8.64–13.71% for 1300–1600 nm.

Abstract:We propose a novel reflectance model for the physically based rendering of retroreflective materials, based on prismatic sheeting and microfacet theory. Due to its high performance, prismatic sheeting has been extensively used in material industry. We show through a geometric optics analysis that a prismatic sheet with a smooth incident plane exhibits perfect retroreflection, and retroreflectivity varies with respect to the incident direction. To permit imperfect retroreflection that appears frequently in many common situations, we model the incident plane as a rough surface with a microfacet profile. By adjusting surface roughness, we can easily change the angularity of the retroreflection lobe. We analyze thoroughly the relationship between surface roughness and glossiness of retroreflection using joint spherical warping strategy. Based on the analysis, a practical BRDF model is derived for materials with a prismatic sheet which comprises a surface reflection term, a retroreflection term, and a diffuse reflection term.
Research on Far-Field Diffraction of Cube-Corner Retroreflector in the Satellite Laser Ranging System

Abstract:Cube-corner retroreflector (CCR) has been widely used in the satellite laser ranging (SLR) systems as a cooperative target based on its direct reflecting. It can increase the energy of laser pulse which is reflected back from the satellite, augment the distance between the satellite and the observing station, and improve the ranging accuracy. In recent years, CCR has become one of the essential loads of satellites for improving the satellite orbit's accuracy. CCR in a satellite diffracts and redistributes the energy of the laser pulse, and the far-field diffraction of the CCR impacts the performance of SLR greatly. In this paper a method for detecting the far-field diffraction characteristics of CCR quantitatively is discussed. A measuring system is designed, some key factors, such as the incident light's collimation and the Fraunhofer transform's accuracy are analyzed and measured. And the detected results of CCR's far-field diffraction characteristics are compared with the numerical simulation, which can be used as a proof to demonstrate the correctness of the experiment. At last, the CCR's far-field diffraction characteristics at different temperatures are also observed to verify the CCR's adaptability to the space environment.

Abstract:According to the operating principle and characteristic of pentagonal prism, under an ideal condition, the exiting beam from a pentagonal prism is always perpendicular to its incident beam. The influence of the accuracy of the deflection angle is deduced in detail due to the fabrication error of the prism angles and the prism dithering relative to the incident beam. Based on it, the precise formula is given. Hereinto, the vector analysis method is introduced when the incident beam is perpendicular to the incident face because it can't be analyzed with simple two-dimension geometry optics. The analysis results show that the deviation of deflection angle is almost linear with prism angle error and the influence of the incident beam dithering can be ignored when δβ=δθ. The theoretical basis for analyzing error during the metrology and testing with pentagonal prism provided. That will do more benefit in manufacturing of the pentagonal prism.

Abstract:The array of micro-prisms was described by model of multi-period blazed gratings consisting of triangular apertures. The origins of hexagram-shaped diffraction patterns were interpreted based on multiple-beam interference and diffraction array theorem. The relation between zonal /line ghost fringes and imperfectly fabricated array structures was analyzed. Geometrical performances (e.g., the dihedral angle of micro-prism) were tested by measuring the features of diffraction patterns of samples from three retro-reflective sheeting manufacturers.

Abstract:The polarization variation of a reflector light after a bundle of linear polarization light is incident on the ideal cube corner retroreflector is analyzed. Diffraction distribution about the orthogonal polarization quantities of a reflector light is calculated with Fresnel diffraction theory and the correlative diffraction diagram is drawn. Meanwhile, the comparision with the diffraction diagram without considering the polarization effect proves that they are different obviously. At the same time, the result provides the grounds for the theoretical design of cube corner reflector with different usage requirement.

Abstract:Rainbow refractometry has been used in the past to measure size and refractive index of spherical particles, typically droplets in a spray. In the present study, conventional optical configurations for point measurements or line measurements have been extended to allow also the particle position in a plane to be determined, and hence, the designation planar rainbow refractometry. However, this extension introduces challenges in accurately calibrating the 2D scattering angles with the image coordinates. This challenge has been met using a novel calibration method, employing a monodispersed droplet stream traversed through the measurement plane. Experiments confirm achievable horizontal and vertical position accuracies of 0.42 mm and 0.36 mm, respectively, and a refractive index uncertainty of 2 × 10 − 4 .

Abstract:The analysis of retro-diffraction in Etched Diffraction Grating (EDG) is given in the present paper by using a Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method combined with perfectly matched layers (PML) and a periodic boundary condition.This numerical method is more accurate and reliable than other methods such as the ray approximation method or the differential method.Numerical simulation is given for both P-polarized and S-polarized lights.It is shown that the total internal reflection (TIR) structure is effective for high refractive index(e.g.InP) based gratings,but it doesn′t perform well for low refractive index(e.g.silica) based gratings.
A Physically-Based BRDF Model for Retroreflection.

Abstract:We introduce an analytical BRDF model tailored to the realistic rendering of retroreflective materials. Though these specially-designed materials are frequently encountered in our daily life, such as high-visibility clothing and traffic signs, their reflectance behaviors are barely analyzed and simulated in a physically meaningful manner in computer graphics. To understand how retroreflection is actually generate, we conduct a detailed optical analysis on a typical prismatic sheet which is the most widely used retroreflector in the material industry. In particular, the effective retroreflective area of the sheet is studied theoretically and experimentally. Based on the study, we derive a practical BRDF model that takes into account all types of reflection from the sheet, including mirror reflection, retroreflection, and diffuse reflection. Experiments confirm that our BRDF can produce visually pleasing rendered images with high fidelity retroreflection effects which closely match those generated by the prismatic sheet.

Abstract:According to edge-wave diffraction theory, we have analyzed and compared the edge-wave diffraction intensity of gaussian(n=2)、parabolic(n=1,2) functions and linear taper variable reflectivity mirrors. Numerical results show that gaussian and super-gaussian reflectivity mirrors can reduce the edge-wave diffraction intensity more effectively, and obtain zeroth-order approximate geometrical optical fields.

Abstract:By utilizing the internal-reflection effect at air–glass boundary, we have proposed a novel method of nano-displacement measurement. Excellent linearity of the reflectance versus the angle of incidence in internal reflection is achieved by making use of a differential detection scheme. Thereby, the target's displacement which causes the change of incident angle can be determined accurately by measuring reflectance. Using a differential detector such as quadrant detector, a compact system based on the above method has been developed, with advantages of simple configuration and low costs compared with interferometers and traditional confocal methods (CMs). The resolution of this system is about 2nm in a wide measurement range. Factors such as the initial angle of incidence, the number of reflections, and the polarization state of the light determine the resolution and measurement range. It is very suitable for many potential applications, especially in the automatic focus of the state-of-art microscopy, in which the traditional problem of focus drift may be solved. In addition, theoretical analysis and experimental results of a prototype sensor are presented.

Abstract:Retroreflective gratings serve as fundamental optical elements in nanophotonics, with polarization-independent diffraction efficiency being one of the critical parameters for assessing their performance. In the far-infrared spectral range, traditional retroreflective gratings typically refer to metal echelette gratings, but their diffraction efficiency cannot approach 100% due to metal absorption. In the visible and near-infrared spectral ranges, metal echelette gratings have gradually been replaced by all-dielectric metasurfaces because dielectric materials exhibit negligible absorption at specific wavelengths. However, there is still a lack of relevant research in the far-infrared range, mainly due to the weak control capability of the existing devices over the polarization-independent phase. Here, we propose a kind of all-dielectric retroreflective metasurface composed of asymmetric pillars and freely tunable aperiodic multilayer films. The pillar structure can achieve polarization insensitivity, and the insufficient modulation capability of the dielectric materials can be compensated for by aperiodic Ge/ZnS films. The designed metasurface achieves the diffraction efficiency by RCWA, with the maximum larger than 99% and the overall reaching 95% (9.3–9.6 μm). We have provided detailed explanations of the design methodology and fabrication process. Our work lays the groundwork for further exploration and application of far-infrared lasers.
