Abstract:Seawater desalination is an important way to solve the problem of fresh water shortage.Lower cost can be obtained by utilizing new technology and membrane materials and alternative energy sources.Recent improvements in seawater desalination using multi-stage distillation,multi-stage flash distillation,vapour compression distillation,reverse osmosis and hybrid processes based on membrane technology are reviewed.The possibility of using wind energy,solar energy,nuclear energy and chemical thermal energy is also discussed,finally the trends towards the future of seawater desalination are provided.
A Separation and Desalination Process for Farmland Saline-Alkaline Water

Abstract:Salination poses serious hazards to farmland soil. For the purpose of solving soil salination, desalination of water sources, and other problems faced by arid areas, a separation and desalination process for farmland saline-alkaline water is proposed; a separation and desalination device based on this process is also presented and tested. Results indicate that water associated with the pretreatment device satisfied the working conditions of the composite nanofiltration (NF)-reverse osmosis (RO) membrane system. The composite NF-RO membrane system produced a better filtering effect than either the NF membrane or the RO membrane. When used for filtering saline-alkaline water, the composite NF-RO membrane system achieved a desalination rate of 96.06%, a total hardness removal rate of 98.93%, and a Cl- removal rate of 99.32%, adhering to the standard for irrigation water quality. The flashing-condensation process realized a fresh water recovery rate greater than 70%. During brine evaporation using solar salt making processes, the primary compound of crystals precipitated was NaCl (with a relative content of 93%), suggesting that the precipitates have the potential values of industrial salts. These findings offer new technical references for solving the problem of farmland irrigation water faced by saline-alkaline areas worldwide.

Abstract:Based on the assumption of homogeneous isotropic soil and ignoring the dimensions of electrodes,the formula for three-dimension electric field intensity by parallel rows of electrodes was proposed.The characteristics of electric field under different spacing between opposite polarity electrodes and electrodes lengths were compared.Influence scope of electric field was also investigated.Then electric field intensity formula was simplified by considering the effect of adjacent electrode pair.Finally,the application of the theory was illustrated with the combination of case history.Parameters analysis shows that appropriate electrodes parameters can be selected in the electro-osmotic design phase by the electric field intensity formula to meet technical and economic demand.

Abstract:In order to study the optimal system operation schemes and control strategy of high-tech industrialization demonstration project for seawater desalination in Shandong Province,a mathematical model which reflects correctly and comprehensively the system characteristics is an important prerequisite.This paper introduced a mathematical model based on the thermal performance analysis of the system with hybrid desalination method suitable for low temperature nuclear heating reactor,including low temperature multi-effect distiller(LT-MED-TVC) and reverse osmosis(RO) systems,and showed the calculated results of the system operation under different conditions.By comparing with the engineering design parameters and commercial software calculation results provided by RO plant supplier,it is indicated that the model can correctly catch desalination system operating characteristics,and meet the need for further research.

Abstract:A new desalination system based on ocean thermal energy (OTE) is presented in this paper. It introduced the basic model and the system was studied experimentally. The desalination process consists of flash evaporation, condensation and seawater transportation. Here, OTE was used to maintain a vacuum, under which liquid could be evaporated at atmospheric temperatures and with less energy than conventional technique. The experimental platform is a pilot-scale system and the freshwater production could reach 100 kg/h, compared with 20 kg/h of Kumar's study in 2007. Meanwhile, a new type of equipment was presented which could improve the performance of the experimental system. At last, the effect of various operating conditions (temperature of surface and deep seawater, mass flow and freshwater production) was studied experimentally and compared with theoretical results. The results agreed well with the theoretical predictions. It was found that the effect of temperature difference was significant on the desalination system.

Abstract:Desalination as a vital technology for removing salts from saline water, is widely employed in municipal water supply, wastewater treatment, saltwater desalination, and chemical purification. The membrane-based desalination technology now offers a cost-effective alternative to other techniques for generating freshwater. Electro-desalination takes advantage of numerous membrane or electrode materials for desalination under electric-driven force, and performs long-term stability and effectiveness for desalinating saline water with various salinity and compositions. Among all the electro-desalination procedures, electrodialysis (ED) and membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) are two primary forms. This review gives the state-of-the-art in electro-desalination, particularly, the significant applications for ED and MCDI procedures were explored and compared in terms of energy efficiency and consumption. Future challenges and possibilities for electro-desalination applications were discussed and foretasted.

Abstract:The global scarcity of freshwater resources has greatly contributed to the development of desalination technologies, in which electrodialysis desalination is one of the most widely used and highly regarded methods. In this work, the first step was to design and assemble a experiment module for electrodialysis desalination. The ion removal efficiency and single membrane mass transfer flux of electrodialysis desalination were investigated. The results show that the desalination performance of the module is improved by increasing the voltage gradient, increasing the concentration of seawater and electrolyte and decreasing the membrane surface flux and that the optimum operating conditions for the module at 24 V operating voltage are feedstock concentration of 35 g/L, electrolyte concentration of 1.42 g/L which and system flow rate of 15 L/h. The results of the study will help to better investigate electrodialysis desalination technology.

Abstract:To solve the problem of soil salination and to desalinate saline−alkaline water in arid areas, this study involved the design and testing of a separation and desalination device for farmland saline−alkaline water that is suitable for arid areas. The results of this study indicate that after the pretreatment of farmland saline−alkaline water, the water yielded by the pretreatment device had a mean turbidity of <1 and a mean silt density index (SDI) of <3, which met the working conditions of nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes. When used to filter saline−alkaline water, the composite NF−RO membrane system achieved a desalination rate of 97.06%, a total hardness removal rate of 97.83%, and a Cl− removal rate of 99.65%, which satisfied the standard for irrigation water quality. Some indicators of the yielded water reached the hygienic standard for drinking water, thus successfully reutilizing water resources. The circulating solar collector tube of the device was designed with a collection area of 6 m2, which could basically satisfy the heat demand of the flash tank for distillation. The design of the flash tank and the shell-and-tube circulating condenser met the requirements for vapor condensation. The crystals in the solar salt box precipitated under solar action. X-ray diffraction was used to identify the primary compound of the crystals as NaCl, suggesting that the precipitates have potential value as industrial salts. This study offers new technical references and helpful engineering guidance for arid saline−alkaline enrichment areas facing the problem of saline farmland irrigation water.

Abstract:In North China, water shortage imposes constraint on economic and social development. Seawater desalination provides an effective approach to relieve this disadvantage, while this industry also accompanies with adverse environmental effects. To study the environmental impact of brine discharge from a desalination plant at the planning stage on the west coastal line of the Bohai Bay, the salinity distributions are predicted by using numerical simulation. Monthly variations of salinity distributions are given and the impacted areas are calculated. The results show that the mean area with salinity rising of 1 and 2 are about 40 and 10 square kilometers, respectively. The maximum impact areas are about 80 and 35 square kilometers respectively, which will take place in spring. The salinity variation at the inlet is predicted, which is fluctuated with the tidal oscillations, and the maximum salinity level is below 35 in this position.

Abstract:Solar desalination is one of the most promising strategies to address the global freshwater shortage crisis. However, the residual salt accumulated on the top surface of solar evaporators severely reduces light absorption and steam evaporation efficiency, thus impeding the further industrialization of this technology. Herein, a metal–phenolic network (MPN)‐engineered three‐dimensional (3D) evaporator composed of photothermal superhydrophilic/superhydrophobic sponges and side‐twining hydrophilic threads for efficient desalination with directional salt crystallization and zero liquid discharge is reported. The MPN coatings afford the engineering of alternating photothermal superhydrophilic/superhydrophobic sponges with high heating efficiency and defined vapor escape channels, while the side‐twining threads induce site‐selective salt crystallization. The 3D evaporator exhibits a high and stable indoor desalination rate (∼2.3 kg m−2 h−1) of concentrated seawater (20 wt%) under simulated sun irradiation for over 21 days without the need for salt crystallization inhibitors. This direct desalination is also achieved in outdoor field operations with a production rate of clean water up to ∼1.82 kg m−2 h−1 from concentrated seawater (10 wt%). Together with the high affinity and multiple functions of MPNs, this work is expected to facilitate the rational design of solar desalination devices and boost the research translation of MPN materials in broader applications. In this paper is mainly concentrated on seawater desalination. Several filtration techniques are available these days. Work has been carried out for low cost desalination technique. In this work, boiling process, condensation process and mechanical filtrations are used. The final purified water is stored in tank. Abstract:A two-step procedure to evaluate the induced electromagnetic fields by moving seawater due to an undersea vehicle is proposed. First, to obtain the induced current density in the seawater, the seawater fluid field is resolved by employing a pair of point sources to simulate the travelling slender vehicle. Then, the induced electromagnetic fields are found by solving the Maxwell equations via magnetic vector potential with appropriate boundary conditions. Numerical results show that the induced magnetic fields near the sea surface could be a few hundreds pico-Tesla, well above the limit of modern magnetometer.
Process Simulation of Desalination by Electrodialysis of an Aqueous Solution Containing a Neutral Solute

Abstract:A model was developed to describe the desalination process of an aqueous solution consisting of a salt and a neutral solute using electrodialysis (ED). Under the assumption of plug flow in compartments, the ED process was analyzed in two-dimensional directions of the electric field and flow to get the differential equations of mass balance in the flow length. Then the transport equations of solutes and water through the membrane were deduced by the irreversible thermodynamics approach. Under the limited condition of uniform current density, the model composed of a first-order differential equation set was developed. While the model parameters such as transport coefficients, dimensions of ED equipment, operation conditions and characteristics of solutes are given, the model was solved by the numerical method. The variations of current density, concentrations of solutes and velocities in dilute and concentrated compartments vs. flow length can be simulated by the model. While there was no neutral solute, the model was used to simulate the desalination process of a salt solution. By comparing the ED experiments to the simulations, it is shown that the model is well suited to describe the actual desalination process. The effects of the initial values of variables in the model on the desalination process were simulated to attempt to construct the actual ED process; and the general simulation of desalination process can be realized by the model. While the effect of concentration polarization on the desalination process is reflected by the variation of membrane conductivity, the model was verified to describe the ED process successfully under low velocity.
A rapid-convergent particle swarm optimization approach for multiscale design of high-permeance seawater reverse osmosis systems

Abstract:Directly solving sophisticated partial differential equation constrained optimization problems is not only extremely time-consuming, but also very hard to find unique optimal solutions. Here, we propose stable and efficient surrogate models for seawater reverse osmosis desalination processes that enable thorough quantitative description of hydrodynamics and local transport characteristics in narrow flow channels. Without iteratively solving complex multi-physics simulation problem taking several hours, the proposed multi-scale design optimization framework significantly reduces the problem complexity by computing the surrogate models in seconds. Moreover, a fast-converging active subspace particle swarm optimization framework is proposed to address the optimal design problem. Compared to the standard particle swarm optimization algorithm, the proposed method enhances the average optimum by 14% and the standard deviation of optimum results for multiple runs is reduced by no less than ten times. The optimized desalination system achieves 9% reduction on energy consumption and 30% improvement on water production efficiency.

Abstract:Solar-powered membrane distillation is a promising desalination technology that can provide accessible and reliable freshwater for coastal and island households. However, high installment cost and low efficiency are two main hindering factors restrict the widespread of this technology. To solve these issues, a low-cost air gap membrane distillation (AGMD) desalination system powered by efficient evacuated U-tube solar collector (EUSC) is put forward to theoretically predict its effectiveness. A system-scale mathematical model for the proposed hybrid system is established and validated. The system performance is predicted under the weather conditions of southeast China (Ningbo city). The maximum permeate flux, energy efficiency and exergy efficiency are, respectively, 3.16kgm−2h−1 , 56.71% and 0.38%, showing a bright application prospect. Numerous parametric studies are undertaken to explore how to further enhance the performance of this technique. The long-term running performance for the year of 2021 and last 41 years is also revealed. The yearly average production is about 6452 kg, which can satisfy the drinking water demand for a household of 6 members. Furthermore, economic study is presented and the levelized cost of water is only 8.54$/m3 . The proposed EUSC/AGMD coupling system is an efficient and economic alternative for small-scale solar seawater desalination.

Abstract:The use of seawater desalination technology to solve water shortages in energy- and resource-scarce regions has attracted widespread attention worldwide. In this paper, the performance of a closed-cycle humidification–dehumidification desalination system with a heat pump was experimentally investigated. The system is a closed-cycle system, which includes humidifiers, a heat pump, dehumidifiers, and an air heat exchanger. The heat pump is used by the system to carry energy. The effects of different parameters on the system performance were studied. Scale and economic analyses of the system were conducted to explore the application prospects of the system. The maximum gained output ratio of the system was 4.82. The maximum freshwater production was 960 kg/h, and the cost per kilogram of freshwater was USD 0.03, which are more considerable compared with other systems. This system provides an effective way to save energy in remote areas with energy shortages and freshwater resource shortages.

Abstract:Desalination and water purification through the ion drift of salted water flow due to an electric field in a duct is perhaps a feasible membrane-free technology. Here, the unsteady modulation of ion drift is treated by employing the Poison–Nernst–Plank (PNP) equations in the linear regime. Based on the solution of the PNP equations, the closed-form relationships of the charge density, the ion concentration, the electric field distribution and its potential are obtained as a function of position and time. It is found that the duration of the ion drift is of the order of one second or less. Moreover, the credibility of various electrical circuit models is examined and successfully compared with our solution. Then, the closed form of the surface charge density and the potential that are calculated without the linear approximation showed that the compact layer is crucial for the ion confinement near the duct walls. To test this, nonlinear solutions of the PNP equations are obtained, and the limits of accuracy of the linear theory is discussed. Our results indicate that the linear approximation gives accurate results only at the fluid’s bulk but not inside the double layer. Finally, the important issue of electric field diminishing at the fluid’s bulk is discussed, and a potential method to overcome this is proposed.

Abstract:Scarcity of water resources becomes more and more serious and the desalination of sea water will play more important role. In this paper a new view of using the inorganic reverse osmosis membranes instead of the organic reverse osmosis membranes and the inorganic ultrafiltration (UF) membranes in desalination technology to pretreat sea water has been described. It will be expected to reduce the costs and to develop the desalination technology onto popular application. Meanwhile, the applications of layered and porous silicate minerals for the multi-utilization of sea water resources have been discussed in the systematic engineering of desalination.

Abstract:Interfacial zones straddling terrestrial and marine realms, colloquially known as mudflats, epitomize a dynamic nexus between these environments and are fundamental to the coastal ecosystem. The investigation of these regions is paramount for facilitating infrastructural developments including ports, wharfs, cross-sea bridges, and the strategic utilization of freshwater resources sequestered from mainland islands amid ongoing economic progress. Terrestrial realms conventionally employ electromagnetic techniques as efficacious modalities to delineate subterranean geological information, encompassing structural details and water-bearing strata. However, the peculiar topographic and geological nuances of mudflat regions pose substantial challenges for the efficacious application of electromagnetic methodologies. The present paper endeavors to address these challenges by suggesting innovative modifications to the existing instrumentation and evolving novel data acquisition techniques specifically tailored for electromagnetic exploration within mudflat environments. This paper delves into the electrical characteristics of water-bearing layers within mudflats, and ascertains details pertaining to the subterranean structure and the spatial distribution of fresh and saline water resources, through the holistic interpretation of a multitude of profiles.
