Abstract:Recently, to solve the water scarcity crisis, challenges have arisen in exploring solar desalination systems with low power consumption. Along with that, a small-scale hybrid humidification-dehumidification /reverse osmosis desalination unit powered by concentrated photovoltaic/thermal solar technology is theoretically optimized and investigated. The study introduced the novelty of desalination system optimization and thermal energy cascade utilization with mass recovery to reduce energy consumption and overall system liquid discharge. Performance parameters such as; solar system productivity, freshwater productivity, freshwater salinity, recovery ratio, and energy consumption were evaluated under the climatic data of Sanya, China. The study also examined the sensitivity of climatic factors on the system's productivity and performance. Results showed, that as reverse osmosis operating pressure increased from 40 to 50 bars, the pressure exchanger integrated, and the SW30-HR380 membrane type was selected, it significantly improved productivity by 90.8 %, reduced energy consumption by 58.2 %, and increased recovery ratio by 74.8 % at 700 W/m 2 solar radiation. Additionally, the improved system produces an average 4 m 3 /d (548 L/m 2 d) productivity, 500–650 ppm salinity at 40 % recovery ratio, and 4 kW/m 3 energy consumption, outperforming previous studies. Finally, solar radiation significantly impacts desalination system performance, while wind speed has the least effect.
