Abstract:Research of the influence on the grain size of AZ91D alloy by different melt treatments and electromagnetic stirring process was done.The result shows that carbon powder has significant effect on the refinement of AZ91D,which is excelled than C2Cl6 and Al-10Sr master alloys.FeCl3 and Al-5Ti-B have little effect.The complex process of melt treatment and electromagnetic stirring makes the grain shape of AZ91D transfer to equal and fine spheroid.The complex process has much more effects than the single process of electromagnetic stirring.

Abstract:Effect of electromagnetic stirring and solution treatment on the microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of AZ31 alloy are investigated in this study. Results show that the mechanical properties of AZ31 alloy are substantially increased after electromagnetic stirring and solution treatment. The tensile strength and elongation are 178 MPa and 19.6 % for AZ31 alloy prepared by electromagnetic stirring after solution treatment. A large number of twins and low angle boundaries are observed in the specimen after heat treatment, since the compressive stress on (1010) crystal plane become larger during quenching. The dislocation arrays, which produced by slip or climbing of dislocations, join together to form low angle boundaries.
Effect of Electromagnetic Stirring on Fine Grain Formation and Tensile Property Improvement for Fe-Ni Superalloy

Abstract:Due to its excellent creep rupture strength and low cost,superalloy GH2984 has becoming a promising material to be used as heat exchanger in the prospective 700℃fossil power plant.The mechanical strength,which is a particularly important indicator for the superalloy,strongly depends on the grain size and crabide distribution.In current study,we have investigated the influence of a rotating magnetic field(RMF)on the solidified microstructures and tensile properties of superalloy GH2984.RMF has been applied to provide a forced convection within the solidifying melt.The melt stirring by a sufficiently high magnetic field provides homogeneous grain size and elements distribution in the sample volume.Meanwhile,yield strength is found to be effectively enhanced for the sample solidified under magnetic field.The result has demonstrated that the RMF method on the melt solidification process shows a promising perspective for refining the grains and promoting the mechanical strength of superalloy GH2984.

Abstract:Coarse structure and composition segregation inevitably occurred in light-weight multi-component alloys that manufactured by traditional methods due to the high concentration of solute elements. This work proposes a novel idea to address this challenge by using a combination of electromagnetic stirring and homogenization treatment. The optimum ultimate compressive strength and compressive yield strength were 497 MPa and 432 MPa, which were 12.7% and 14.3% higher than those without electromagnetic stirring, respectively. The electromagnetic force increases the number of nuclei and the equiaxed crystal rate by breaking the primary Mg2Si dendrites and shedding the fine grains on the surface of the mold, so as to achieve the purpose of grain refinement. Furthermore, electromagnetic stirring with appropriate frequency can greatly increase the solid solubility, aggravate the lattice distortion, and consequently lead to a noticeable diffusion sluggish effect, resulting in fine and uniform dispersion of the precipitated MgZn2 phase during homogenization. Finally, a strengthening model was established, and the estimated values were highly consistent with the experimental data, with an error ranging within 5%. This study elaborated the microstructure evolution mechanism, offering guidance to fabricate light-weight multi-component alloys with large-size and excellent mechanical properties.

Abstract:The master alloy Mn-30Al containing ε-AlMn phase and the Mn-30Al alloy containing γ2-Al8Mn5 phase were prepared by vacuum quenching furnace,and microstructure of two kinds of master alloys were observed,meanwhile,effects of ε-AlMn phase,γ2-Al8Mn5 phase,Mn and Al on grain refinement of magnesium alloy were analyzed.The results reveal that refining effects of Mn-30Al master alloy containing ε-AlMn phase on the magnesium alloy are obviously superior to Mn-30Al alloy containing γ2-Al8Mn5 phase,Mn,Al.With 0.4% Mn-30Al master alloy containing ε-AlMn phase,grain size of AZ31 magnesium alloy and Mg-Zn alloy are decreased from 898 μm to 320 μm and from 320 μm to 180 μm,respectively.ε-AlMn phase can be acted as desirable heterogeneous nuclei through surface misfit calculation.

Abstract:The influence of electromagnetic stirring frequency and cooling rate on the microstructure and properties of AZ91D alloy is investigated.The results indicate that the AZ91D alloy with the primary grain(α-Mg) with sizes of less than 80 μm and shape factors of more than 0.8,are prepared by the electromagnetic stirring process at the cooling rate of 2.0 ℃/s and the electromagnetic stirring frequency of above 20 Hz.When the frequency is more than 20 Hz,the electromagnetic stirring has less effect on the grain size of α-Mg,while the shape factor increases with the electromagnetic stirring frequency.In the conditions of high cooling rate and high electromagnetic stirring frequency,the electromagnetic stirring processing improves the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance.

Abstract:In the present study, Al-3 wt% Al2O3 master alloy was successfully prepared by the reaction between calcined kaolin and aluminum melt, combined with mechanical stirring and high-energy ultrasonic dispersion technology. The γ-Al2O3 particles produced by the reaction are uniformly dispersed in the matrix, and the average size of γ-Al2O3 is about 65 nm. The refinement effect of Al-3 wt% Al2O3 master alloy on A356 alloy was studied. It was found that the α-Al grain size in A356 alloy refined by Al-3 wt% Al2O3 master alloy was decreased from 980 ± 155 µm to 337 ± 95 µm. Compared with the Al-5Ti-1B master alloy, Al-3 wt% Al2O3 has a higher refinement efficiency. In addition, the refinement efficiency of the Al-3 wt% Al2O3 master alloy will not fade within 60 min. Transmission electron microscope analysis showed that the orientation relationship between γ-Al2O3 and Al was (22−2)γ-Al2O3[011]γ-Al2O3//(11−1)Al[011]Al, which demonstrated that γ-Al2O3 could be used as heterogeneous nucleation sites to refine α-Al grains. Moreover, the tensile properties of A356 alloy had been significantly improved.

Abstract:The influence of carbon powder and electromagnetic stirring process on the microstructure of AZ91D alloy were investigated.The results show that carbon powder has certain effect on the grain refinement of AZ91D alloy.Especially with the addition of 0.1 wt% or more carbon powder,the grain size is about 100 μm,which is thirty percent of that in the original one.The β phase is more distributed along the grain boundaries after electromagnetic stirring.The complex processing of melt treatment and electromagnetic stirring make the grain of AZ91D alloy much finer and spheroider.After 0.1% carbon powder additive and electromagnetic stirring,the grain size is about 55 μm,and the shape factor is about 0.85.

Abstract:The effects of an oscillation electromagnetic field (EMF) generated by low frequency pulse current on the grain refinement and phase formation in direct-chill (DC) casting of AZ31B magnesium alloy have been investigated experimentally. The macrostructure evolution was quantitatively examined in terms of the grain size and its distribution, and fine equiaxed grains can be obtained. Given the Lorentz force and velocity variations, temperature distribution and heat extraction process during DC in different electromagnetic conditions, the grain refinement mechanism and the phase composition and formation of AZ31B magnesium alloy were discussed in detail. The grain sizes decrease from 549 ˜ 1094 μm (without EMF) to 402 ˜ 486 μm at the frequency of 15 Hz, and columnar grain region decreases significantly. Forced convection induced by EMF can strengthen the heat extraction along the diametrical direction of billet, weaken the contact heat transfer between melt and mold wall. For the formation of Mn-containing phases, eutectic transformations are dominant in DC casting process of AZ31B magnesium alloy, and the area fraction of eutectic Al8Mn5 phase decreases from center to edge of billet, and its distribution is more homogeneous in the presence of EMF.

Friction Stir Selective Alloying of Different Al% Particulate Reinforced to AZ31 Mg for Enhanced Mechanical and Metallurgical Properties

Abstract:An attempt was made to selectively alloying Mg base matrix with 3%, 6% and 9% volume of Al particulates respectively, using friction stir selective alloying (FSSA). The objective of this investigation is to enhancing the mechanical and metallurgical properties of AZ31 Mg using solid state alloying process. Tensile properties revealed an enhanced strength of 249.4 MPa at 6% Al alloying sample and which is 95% strength of base material. The fractography detects a ductile fracture consisting of dimples, cup and cone shape counterparts with the fracture initiation area and propagation direction. Hardness indentation depicts improved micro-hardness properties and 185% of base alloy in case of 6% alloying due to presence of favorable reinforcing intermetallic particles in the stir area. The hardness relatively varies corresponding to % of Al alloying element at the stir zone. The 6% alloying sample gives best mechanical properties compared to the 3% and 9% alloying. Line scan/mapping technique detects the uniform distribution of the alloying elements. The EDX analysis spot formation of different intermetallic phases, namely AlMg, Al12Mg17 and Mg2Al3. The XRD analysis also informs the intermetallic phase formation and well agrees with EDX analysis. Alloying at different Al% to the Mg base matrix helps in microstructural modification, including uniform dispersion of the alloying element, finer grain and minimum assembled particles at the stir zone leads to improved metallurgical and mechanical properties. The stirred zone consists of metal matrix solid solution of martensitic structure and relatively finer grain compared to base alloy.

Abstract:The effects of stirring current and stirring frequency on the microstructure of semisolid AlCu2.4 alloy prepared by electromagnetic stirring (EMS) were investigated. The microstructural evolution of the partial remelting semi-solid AlCu2.4 alloy under different stirring currents, stirring frequencies, and isothermal holding time was also investigated. Results showed that with increased stirring current and frequency, the microstructures of semisolid AlCu2.4 alloy evolved from coarse dendrites to fine, small, and quasi-globular solid particles uniformly distributed among the eutectic. Moreover, after partial remelting, these microstructures became smaller and more spherical and were distributed more evenly with increased stirring current and stirring frequency. When the stirring parameters were 30 A and 30 Hz, the average grain size was approximately 80 mu m and the shape factor was about 0.76. During partial remelting, both average particle size and the degree of spheroidization constantly increased with prolonged holding time because of Ostwald ripening. The current coarsening rate constant of the semisolid AlCu2.4 alloy prepared by EMS was 567 mu m(3)s(-1) at 590 degrees C. Comparison between the present work and other literature results indicated that the coarsening rate was associated with the microstructure prior to partial remelting, as well as with the alloy composition.
A Novel Process for Grain Refinement of Mg-RE Alloys by Low Frequency Electro-Magnetic Stirring Assisted Near-liquidus Squeeze Casting

Abstract:A novel method named low frequency electro-magnetic stirring assisted near-liquidus squeeze casting (LFEMSNSC) was developed for preparing Mg-RE alloy castings. The grain refining effect in commercially pure Mg (CPMg), peritectic Mg-Zr alloy and eutectic Mg-Gd alloy were comparatively analyzed among conventional gravity cast, squeeze cast and LFEMS-NSC. The results showed that the LFEMS-NSC exhibited effective grain refining efficiency in CP-Mg and Mg-Gd alloys. With changing conventional gravity casting or squeeze casting to LFEMSNSC, the grain morphologies of CP-Mg were transformed from coarse columnar into fine equiaxed grains. The average grain size of CP-Mg was refined from-10 mm to-232 mu m, where the grain refinement efficiency was comparable to that of adding Mg-Zr master alloy. The application of LFEMS-NSC to Mg-Zr and Mg-Gd alloy systems also show considerable grain refining effect, and it show different effectiveness when the solute content varies. The grain refinement mechanism of LFEMS-NSC is mainly because of the enhanced survival rate of free chill crystals and enhanced heterogeneous nucleation rate through melt pre-treatment by LFEMS and applied pressures during solidification.

Abstract:Previous studies have proved that the zirconium (Zr) alloying and grain refining performance of a Mg–Zr master alloy on Mg alloy is closely related to the distribution of Zr particle size, and a Mg–Zr master alloy with more Zr particles in size range of 1–5 μm exhibits a better refining efficiency. In this paper, friction stir processing (FSP) was used to modify the Zr particles size distribution of a commercially available Mg–30 wt.%Zr master alloy, and the subsequent grain refinement ability was studied by trials on a typical Mg–3Nd–0.2Zn–0.6Zr (wt.%, NZ30K) alloy. It is found that plenty of large Zr particles in the as-received Mg–30%Zr master alloy are broken by FSP. Grain refinement tests reveal that the refining efficiency of Mg–30%Zr alloy is significantly improved by FSP, which is attributed to the better distribution of Zr particles. The refinement effect by adding 0.6% FSP-ed Mg–30%Zr is approximately equivalent to that by adding 1.0% as-received Mg–30%Zr. Due to the easy and convenient operation of FSP, this study provides a new method to develop a more efficient Mg–Zr refiner.

Abstract:Electromagnetic stirring (EMS) has become one of the most important branches of the electromagnetic processing of materials. However, a deep understanding of the influence of the EMS on the thermo-fluid flow of the aluminium alloy melt, and consequently the refinement of the microstructure is still not available. This paper investigated the influence of the operating parameters of EMS on the magnetohydrodynamics, temperature field, flow field, and the vortex-shaped structure of the melt as well as the microstructure of the aluminium alloy 2A50 billet by numerical simulation and experiments. The operating parameters were categorised into three groups representing high, medium, and low levels of Lorentz forces generated by EMS. The numerical simulation matched well with the experimental result. It was found that a high level of EMS can improve the uniformity of the temperature and flow fields. The maximum speed was observed at the radius of around 25 mm under all EMS levels. Both the depth and diameter of the vortex-shaped structure generated increased with the enhancement in the EMS level. The average grain size of the edge sample of the billet was reduced by 48.3% while the average shape factor was increased by 51.0% under the medium-level EMS.

Abstract:The A356 melt was stirred by an electromagnetic field and then was poured in a high temperature mold.Thus the semi-solid slurry of A356 alloy was prepared directly.The influence of electromagnetic stirring(EMS) above alloy liquidus on microstructure of A356 alloy slurry was investigated by optical microscope and scanning electron microscope.The diameter and roundness of α(Al) and the space of Al-Si eutectic were measured by Image-Pro Plus.Compared with the microstructure of A356 alloy slurry without EMS,the influences of electromagnetic stirring on the structure of A356 melt and its solidification behavior were studied.The results show that the influence of electromagnetic stirring on the following solidification behavior is more outstanding when the stirring temperature is near the liquidus;the number of α(Al) dendrites is declined and the morphology is transformed into rosiness and non-dendritic grains;the Al-Si eutectic's transition from lamellar structure to fibrous structure occurs in the eutectic reaction too.This phenomenon is probably attributed to the increase of nucleation rate,which is caused by segregation of Al and Si at the micro-scale levels after EMS.

Abstract:Electromagnetic stirring (EMS) process, as an advanced melt treatment technology, is increasingly applied in metallurgy industry. Direct chill (DC) casting process by annular electromagnetic stirring (A-EMS) was applied in this study to investigate the solidification behavior of a modified 7N01 alloy, and the effects of DC casting process without EMS, and A-EMS casting process on microstructure, composition segregation and mechanical properties of continuously cast billets were compared. The research results showed that the billets with higher performance, lower macro-segregation, more uniformly fine solidification structure were obtained in case of A-EMS.

Abstract:The effects of electromagnetic stirring (EMS) including stirring time, applied voltage and rotational frequency on the microstructure of semisolid slurries of the Mg–Nd–Zn–(Zr) alloys were investigated. The results indicate that all of the parameters have large effects on the microstructure of the slurries. After being treated by EMS, the morphology of primary α-Mg phases in the Mg–3Nd–0.2Zn (NZ30) alloy slurries evolves from dendrite to three types: rosette, dendrite, and spheroid, while a semisolid microstructure with small and spheroidal particles is obtained in the Mg–3Nd–0.2Zn–0.4Zr (NZ30K) alloy slurries. The data for solid fraction with stirring time can be fitted to linear equations. The increase of applied voltage and rotational frequency makes the primary α-Mg phases initially refined and then coarsened. The optimal processing parameters are stirring time 120–180s, applied voltage 300–350V, rotational frequency ~20Hz for NZ30 alloy, and stirring time 30–180s, applied voltage ~350V, rotational frequency ~20Hz for NZ30K alloy. The average particle size of NZ30 alloy can be refined from ~879 to ~457μm. Furthermore, the effects of applied voltage and rotational frequency on undercooling and melt temperature were also discussed on the basis of thermodynamic theory.

Abstract:This study presents a modified annular electromagnetic stirring (M-AEMS) melt treatment suitable for a large-volume and high-alloyed aluminum alloy. A 3D computational model coupling an electromagnetic model with a macroscopic heat and fluid-flow model was established by using Ansoft Maxwell 3D and Fluent from ANSYS workbench, and the effects of the electromagnetic shielding ring, the height of the magnet yoke, the shape of the iron core, and the internal cooling mandrel on the electromagnetic, thermal and flow fields were studied numerically. Based on the optimal technical parameters, the effectivity of the M-AEMS process by using 7075 alloy was validated experimentally. The results show that a favorable electromagnetic field distribution can be achieved by changing the magnet yoke height, the iron-core shape and the electromagnetic shielding ring, and the melt temperature of the 7075 alloy can drop rapidly to the pouring temperature by imposing the internal cooling mandrel; compared with ordinary annular electromagnetic stirring, the M-AEMS process creates a lower magnetic strength near the melt top, beneficial for stabilizing the melt surface; meanwhile, it yields a higher magnetic strength near the melt bottom, which increases the shear rate and ensures an optimal stirring effect. Therefore, M-AEMS works more efficiently because the thermal and composition fields become uniform in a shorter time, which reduces the average grain size and the composition segregation, and a more stable melt surface can be obtained during treatment, which reduces the number of air and oxide inclusions in the melt.

Abstract:The grain refinement efficiency of Mg–5Li–3Al alloy inoculated by Al–5Ti–1B master alloy and the influences of grain size on the mechanical properties were investigated. With the addition of 1.0wt% Al–5Ti–1B, the average grain size of Mg–5Li–3Al alloy decreases markedly from ~120μm to 50μm, leading to significant increases in both strength and elongation. The tensile yield strength (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation increased from 82MPa, 154MPa and 7.8% to 110MPa, 216MPa and 12.2%, respectively. XRD and EDS analysis show that Al–5Ti–1B master alloy is composed of α-Al, Al3Ti and TiB2. Crystallographic calculations and EDS analysis indicate that TiB2 particles are the potent heterogeneous nucleating substrates for α-Mg grains, which is the main reason for grain refinement. In addition, solute element, Ti also plays an important role in grain refinement.
