Abstract:Electronic nose technology offers non-destructive alternative to sense aroma, can be used to assess fruit ripening stage during shelf life. The objective of this study was to monitor tomato storage shelf life during two storage treatments using PEN 2 electronic nose (E-nose). Principal component analysis (PCA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) were used to distinguish the different tomato storage time. The obtained results proved that tomato with different storage time can be monitored by the E-nose, but very clear separation among all groups of different storage time was not achieved. By PCA and LDA, E-nose could more clearly discrimination storage time of tomato in carton box than one in folded bag. The correlations between the measured and predicted values of fruit quality attribute (soluble solids content, pH, and puncture force) showed poor prediction performance on the base of signals of E-nose sensors.

Abstract:La tecnología de la nariz electrónica ofrece una rápida y no destructiva alternativa de medir el aroma y así explotar la información para acceder al estado de maduración de las frutas durante su vida en estantería. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la capacidad de la nariz electrónica para monitorear los cambios en la producción de volátiles del tomate durante dos tratamientos de almacenamientos deferentes, empleando para ello un equipo específico (PEN-2). El análisis de los componentes principales (PCA) y el análisis del discriminante linear (LDA) fueron usados para conocer la capacidad de la técnica para distinguir los tomates con diferentes tiempos de almacenamiento. Los resultados obtenidos prueban que la nariz electrónica PEN-2 puede diferenciar satisfactoriamente los estados de maduración del tomate a través de su tiempo de almacenamiento. Durante el almacenamiento del tomate en cajas de cartón los análisis PCA y LDA fueron capaces de clasificar el 97,77 y 95,55 % respectivamente del total de ejemplos (90) en sus respectivos grupos (cinco), además los dos métodos alcanzan una clara separación entre ellos. Por otro lado el tomate guardado en bolsas no archivó una clara separación entre ellos, pero ambos análisis PCA y LDA fueron capaces de clasificar el 93,33 y 93,33 % respectivamente del total de ejemplos (90) en sus respectivos grupos (cinco). Los sensores 2, 6 y 8 tuvieron una alta influencia en el modelo de reconocimiento.

Abstract:Over the past years, electronic nose (E-nose) technology opened has enhanced the possibility of exploiting information on behavior aroma to assess fruit ripening stage. The objective in this study was to evaluate the capacity of electronic nose to monitor the change in volatile production of ripeness states for tomato, using a specific electronic nose device with 10 different metal oxide sensors (portable E-nose, PEN 2). Principal component analysis (PCA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) were used to investigate whether the electronic nose was able to distinguishing among different ripeness states (unripe, half-ripe, full-ripe and over-ripe). The loadings analysis was used to identify the sensors responsible for discrimination in the current pattern file. The results prove that the electronic nose PEN 2 could differentiate among the ripeness states of tomato. The electronic nose was able to detect a clearer difference in volatile profile of tomato when using LDA analysis than when using PCA analysis. Using LDA analysis, it was possible to differentiate and to classify the different tomato maturity states, and this method was able to classify 100% of the total samples in each respective group. Some sensors in E-nose have the highest influence in the current pattern file for electronic nose PEN 2. A subset of a few sensors in E-nose can be chosen to explain all the variance. This result could be used in further studies to optimize the number of sensors.

Abstract:An electronic nose (E-nose) was used to evaluate the maturity and to monitor the shelf life of tomatoes. Results showed that pink-stage fruit could be distinguished frorn light-red stage and red-stage ones based on the E-nose using principal component analysis (PCA) and linear discril-ninant analysis (LDA). The E-nose was able to classify samples having different firmnesses using PCA. By means of partial least squares (PLS) based on E-nose sensor response signals, fruit firmness was predicted and the correlation between the predicted and measured values were 0.936. A-clear distinction of initially light-red fruit during storage from Days 1-6, Days 7-11 and Days 14-17 was obtainable by the E-nose using PCA and LDA. It was also possible to distinGuish storage of initially red-stage fruit during storage from Days 1-5, Days 6-11 and Days 14-17 using LDA. The shelf life by PLS models using the E-nose sensor response signals were predicted and the coefficients were 0.981 and 0.968 for initially light-red stage fruit and red-stage fruit, respectively. Research has shown that the E-nose has sufficient sensitivity and resolution to evaluate tomato fruit maturity and to predict firrimess. The shelf life of light-red stage and red-stage fruit can be satisfactorily evaluated also.

The objective in this study was to evaluate the capacity of electronic nose in monitoring the change in volatile production of mandarin during different storage treatments, and storage shelf-life of mandarin was evaluated by measuring the change in volatile production of mandarin using electronic nose device (PEN 2). By comparing, storage shelf-life of mandarin was better distinguished using Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) than Principal Component Analysis (PCA). PCA and LDA analysis were efficient to classify mandarin with the same storage time in its respective groups; but the methods are not efficient to separate the mandarins by different storage times. The correlation between the measured and predicted values of fruit quality attribute (such as soluble solid content, acidity and compression force) shows poor to reasonable prediction performance by means of electronic nose signals. The results prove that sensors 2, 7 and 9 in the electronic nose PEN 2 for mandarin have a higher influence in the current pattern file. Hence, nearly a subset of few sensors can be chosen to explain all the variance. This result could be used in further studies to optimize the number of sensors and find better performance.

Abstract:The freshness of fruit is relatively easy to authenticate by its morphological characteristics, while processing fruits into juices makes the freshness difficult to identify. In this paper, cherry tomatoes at different storage temperatures (4 and 25 degrees C) and shelf lives (SLs, 16 days at 4 degrees C and 8 days at 25 degrees C) were squeezed for use in 100% juices. Quality indices (SL, pH, soluble solids content (SSC), vitamin C (VC) concentration and firmness) of these cherry tomatoes were determined through analysing the juices using two sensor systems - an e-nose and an e-tongue. Support vector regression (SVR) was applied to predict the quality indices. The prediction performances based on a one sensor system, as well as a combination of two systems, were compared. The results showed that the e-tongue, which presents a similar prediction performance to the combination system, presents a better prediction performance (with higher squared correlation coefficients (R-2) and a lower standard error of prediction (SEP)) than the e-nose. For tomatoes stored at 4 degrees C, the prediction parameters (R2, SEP) based on the e-tongue data for the SL, pH, SSC, VC concentration and firmness are (0.998, 0.295 d), (0.971, 0.022), (0.906, 0.075 degrees Brix), (0.978, 1.005 mg per 100 g) and (0.906, 0.292 N), respectively. For tomatoes stored at 25 degrees C, the prediction parameters (R2, SEP) based on the e-tongue data for the SL, pH, SSC, VC concentration and firmness are (0.997, 0.193 d), (0.934, 0.017), (0.957, 0.075 degrees Brix), (0.902, 0.897 mg per 100 g) and (0.908, 0.593 N), respectively. These results prove that it is possible to measure the freshness of fruits that are squeezed for juice consumption using sensor systems, and that the combination of sensor systems is not always better than using a one sensor system.

Abstract:In this research,the potencial of using the Visible/Near Infrared Spectroscopy (Vis/NIRS) was investigated for measuring the quality attributes of Tomato 'Heatwave' (Lycopersicum esculentum), and the relationship is established between nondestructive Vis/NIR spectral measurements and the major physiological properties of tomto. The properties include fruit firmness, soluble solids content (SSC) and acidity (pH). Intact tomato fruit were measured by reflectance Vis/NIR in 350-2500 nm range. The data set as the logarithms of the reflectance reciprocal (absorbance (log1/R)) was analyzed in order to build the best calibration model for each characteristic, using some spectral pretreatments and multivariate calibration techniques such as principal component regression (PCR) and partial least square regression (PLS). The models for the SSC (r= 0.90), standard error of prediction (SEP)= 0.19 °Brix with three factors; pH (r= 0.83), standard error of prediction (SEP)= 0.09°Brix with factors, compression force r= 0.81), standard error of prediction (SEP) =16.017°Brix N with six factors, and puncture force (r= 0.83), standard error of prediction (SEP) = 1.18°Brix N with three factors, shown the good to excellent prediction performance. The Vis/NIR spectroscopy technique had significantly greater accuracy for determining the SSC. It was concluded that the Vis/NIRS measurement technique seems reliable to assess the quality attributes of tomato non-destructively.

Abstract:Lycopene content (LC) and soluble solid content (SSC) are important quality indicators for cherry tomatoes. This study attempted simultaneous analysis of inner quality of cherry tomato by Electronic nose (E-nose) using multivariate analysis. E-nose was used for data acquisition, the response signals were regressed by multiple linear regression (MLR) and partial least square regression (PLS) to build predictive models. The performances of the predictive models were tested according to root mean square and correlation coefficient (R-2) in the training set and prediction set. The results showed that MLR models were superior to PLS model, with higher value of R2 and lower values of for RMSE firmness, pH, SSC, and LC. Together with MLR, E-nose could be used to obtain firmness, pH, soluble solid and lycopene contents in cherry tomatoes.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to estimate the ability of an electronic nose (E-nose) to monitor changes in mandarin at different picking dates and to evaluate mandarin quality attributes such as firmness, soluble solids content, and acidity using a specific E-nose device (PEN 2). Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) was used to investigate if the E-nose was able to distinguish different picking dates (ripeness states). By means of a multivariate calibration technique (PLS), a relationship was established between E-nose signal response and quality attributes, and correlation coefficients were r = 0.659 to 0.732 for soluble solids content, pH, and compression force. This result implies a reasonable prediction performance.

Abstract:In this study,electronic nose technology combined with quality and physiological indexes was used to evaluate three levels of maturity of 'Jinxiuhuangtao' peach.The results showed that color turning peaches could be distinguished from mature and ripe peaches using the score plot of principal component analysis(PCA) by the electronic nose measurement.However,mature and ripe peaches were not well distinguished from each other because of existence of overlapping.The predicted results were compared with the results of the traditional chemical and physical test methods(firmness,total soluble solids,titration acid volatile and aromatic constituents) and physiological indexes(ethylene release rate).The comparisons showed that PCA analysis was more accurate than discriminant factor analysis(DFA).Electronic nose technology could provide a basic tool for distinguishing different levels of maturity of peaches.

Abstract:In the present study,an electronic nose(PEN2) was used to characterize and classify two types of oranges coming from different storage times and methods.This method firstly sampled aroma composition emanating from the oranges by PEN2 systems and then obtained response values of PEN2.After this,data analysis was conducted by using principal component analysis(PCA) and linear discrimination analysis(LDA).The results of this study showed that electronic nose was able to identify the above oranges by LDA method.This new approach for orange determinations using a portable electronic nose was faster and cheaper than classical method.

Abstract:The profiles of volatile compounds emitted by plants varies in response to different damage. The potential of electronic nose technology to monitor such changes, with the aim of diagnosing plant health was investingted. An electronic nose(E-nose)was used to analyse tomato seedlings that were subjected to differnent types of damage(infection by Early blight disease, infection by Gray mold disease, mechanically damage, and undamaged). Principal component analysis(PCA), linear discrimination analysis(LDA), back-propagation neural network(BPNN), and support vector machine (SVM) network were used to evaluate the E-nose data. The results indicated that the E-nose can successfully discriminate between tomato seedling with different types of damage. The results of PCA and LDA showed that clusters of data were divided into 3 groups (ZP, HP, and CP/MP). Samples from groups CP and MP overlapped partially. Back-propagation neural network (BPNN) and support vector machine (SVM) network were used to evaluate the E-nose data. Good discrimination results were obtained using SVM and BPNN. The results demonstrate that it is plausible to use E-nose technology as a method for monitoring damage in tomato seedling.

Abstract:Flavor characteristic, caused by a series of physicochemical changes, is an important part of fruit quality and freshness. The purpose of this study was to investigate the reliability and validity of using electronic nose (e-nose) technology to evaluate the quality and freshness of cherry tomatoes after high pressure argon treatments. Extreme learning machine (ELM) and Partial least squares (PLS) were applied for quality parameters prediction. The results showed that freshness of cherry tomatoes based on flavor characteristic over the entire storage time displayed four groups (fresh, acceptable, stale and very stale, respectively). High pressure argon at 0.8 MPa significantly maintained the freshness and quality of cherry tomatoes during cold storage. ELM models showed better performance than PLS models for evaluating the firmness, SSC and pH values according to their higher fitting correlation coefficients (R-2 > 0.9500). The results demonstrated e-nose technology combined with ELM provided a reliable and valid method for evaluating quality and freshness of cherry tomatoes during cold storage.

Abstract:Insufficient control of tomato ripening before harvesting and infection by fungal pests produce large economic losses in world tomato production. Aroma is an indicative parameter of the state of maturity and quality of the tomato. This study aimed to design an electronic system (TOMATO-NOSE) consisting of an array of 12 electrochemical sensors, commercial metal oxide semiconductor sensors, an optical camera for a lateral flow reader, and a smartphone application for device control and data storage. The system was used with tomatoes in different states of ripeness and health, as well as tomatoes infected with Botrytis cinerea. The results obtained through principal component analysis of the olfactory pattern of tomatoes and the reader images show that TOMATO-NOSE is a good tool for the farmer to control tomato ripeness before harvesting and for the early detection of Botrytis cinerea.

Abstract:The aim of this work was to investigate the effects of storage temperature and time on internal quality of Satsuma mandarin (Citrus unshiu Marc.) by means of electronic nose (E-nose) and electronic tongue (E-tongue). The results obtained by two-way MANOVA analysis shows that 1) storage time and temperature did exist interaction effect on vitamin C and sugar/acid ratio, 2) no interaction was found on the content of total soluble solid, and 3) storage time showed no significant influence on the content of total acid. The fusion system, which was composed of signals from E-nose and E-tongue, based on random forest, predicted the internal quality parameters of mandarin fruits with fairly higher precision when compared with a single system. This work indicates that two-way MANOVA analysis might be employed to evaluate the loss of internal quality of fruits under different conditions, and the fusion system composed of E-nose and E-tongue can monitor mandarins at different storage conditions and predict internal quality changes successfully.Industrial relevance: Storage conditions for fresh fruit have been widely investigated, including shelf-life, storage temperature, waxing, and so on. Storage factors, during fresh fruit transportation or marketing, should be considered together and their interactions are also important. In this study, two-way MANOVA was applied to analyze the influence caused by storage time and temperature and also their interaction on the quality parameters. This paper describes the possible application of E-nose and E-tongue to trace the quality status of satsuma mandarin (Citrus unshiu Marc.) during different storage conditions.
