Abstract:Finite element method (FEM) is usually used in dam and large underground cavern engineering to evaluate complex anti-seepage and drainage systems. In general, the substructure method is used to simulate the drainage hole array, but it becomes cumbersome when the number of drainage holes is large and the model is more complicated. In this study, the drainage holes were simplified and simulated as a line. The calculation results of the proposed method were then compared with those of the substructure simulation method and the well flow formula. This method has approximate accuracy, and it is easier to model with fewer nodes and elements compared with the substructure method. Based on the data of Heihe Reservoir, a three-dimensional equivalent continuum seepage FEM, reflecting the topography and geology of the dam area, was established, along with engineering layout and anti-seepage drainage system. The seepage field of nine different anti-seepage and drainage facilities were studied. The effects of drainage hole spacing and impervious curtain on seepage field were investigated. When the drainage holes were working normally and the drainage hole spacing was 2 m, the phreatic line in the dam body was the lowest and the drainage effect was the best. The analysis results showed that the failure of drainage holes on the left and right banks significantly influenced the seepage discharge of dam body and impervious curtain. According to the distribution of seepage field, a reasonable spacing of drainage holes is selected, and reasonable suggestions are put forward for anti-seepage and drainage in different parts.

Risk Analysis for Seepage Failure in Banqiao River Left Levee

Abstract:Based on the case study of Banqiao River left levee,a feasible approach to risk analysis for seepage failure in levees with deterministic seepage FEM was proposed,according to which risk analysis of seepage failure was carried out,and an evaluation of seepage stability was made.The proposed approach could avail itself of the advantage of FEM,and calculate the downstream hydraulic gradient more accurately while considering the soil distribution more actually than those conventional approaches.With the theory of extreme point combination-monotonicity and “3σ” Rule,the critical hydraulic gradient,critical risk coefficient of seepage failure and alarm water level for flood prevention in flood season for Banqiao River levee were set up by the failure case in 1995;that are of great significance to seepage stability evaluation.The analytical approach and the results will be practical and helpful in practice of seepage stability evaluation for flood control engineering.

Abstract:The slices method and FEM are integrated in the analysis of slope stability. The principle of combination and the process of implementation are introduced in detail. An example is given to demonstrate the calculation and the result is compared with that derived from conventional simplified method. It is found that the safe factor calculated based on the later method is always much higher. Consequently,the calculation result of conventional method is not safe enough. The integrated method possesses the advantage of fully utilizing the experience of engineering practice and is applicable to the seepage flow with complicated boundary conditions.

Abstract:Implemented, based on practical engineering projects, is a statistical analysis of strata soil characteristics and geological columns sampled from the main embankment of Yangtse Rive in southern Jingzhou zone of China. Furthermore, it was verified under Kolomogorov-Smirnov theory that this assumption, namely, the statistical hypothesis of Gaussian probability distribution for random permeability tensors of soils to be submitted into the stochastic seepage field simulation would be accepted by the statistical testing. By the help of numerical analysis for stochastic seepage fields simulations using three dimensional finite element method as well as the rationality of simulated stochastic results, investigated were various statistical characteristics and random natures in random seepage fields of the main embankment of Yangtse Rive in southern Jingzhou zone of China. Meanwhile, the developed model was also examined through statistical testing. Especially, as a stochastic boundary condition, the random variation of upstream and downstream water level was taken into account of three-dimensional finite element model in practical analysis for the random seepage field simulations, by which, it has been realized deeply to describe disturbed effects of the boundary randomness due to variability of downstream and upstream water level over variabilities of simulated results presented by vector series of the random seepage field. Furthermore, the function of some safeguards to set up against the seepage problem, such as sheet-pile breakwater and catch-water, as the turbulence of complex boundary condition together with the effects of variability of soil permeability has been analyzed for description of influence of them on the hydraulic potential distributed in the random seepage field and the random evolution of stochastic seepage field under these comprehensive aspects has also been compared with the result obtained by determinate analysis for the corresponding steady seepage field problem. Philosophy deduced in this paper presents the necessity, feasibility and practicability of employing stochastic studies in seepage field problems. Meanwhile, sensitivities of random seepage field hydraulic gradient and downstream exit height were studied upon the variation of permeability and boundary conditions of the main embankment of Yangtse Rive in southern Jingzhou zone of China, by which, broadened is the research domain on seepage field evolution under uncertain numerical coverage.

Abstract:Abstract Water conservancy dam plays a significant role in flood control, power generation, shipping, irrigation, aquaculture, tourism, urban water supply and so on. The stability of the dam is extremely important in the engineering design and research processes. Based on the basic principles of finite difference and strength reduction methods, the software of FLAC3D is adopted to analyze the stability of the dam, considering the seepage state, the reservoir water level height and the seepage coefficient of the dam body. The results show that with the increase of the reservoir water level, the seepage behavior of the dam body is more obvious, and the horizontal displacement of the dam increases, while the dam slip safety factor is reduced. With the increase of the seepage coefficient of the dam body, the seepage discharge at the dam foot increases linearly, and the stability of the dam body decreases obviously. The seepage of dam foundation and dam slope stability is evaluated in this research. It is found that the reservoir water level and the dam body permeability are the important factors affecting the dam slope stability, so it is necessary to enhance the anti-seepage measures during the dam design and construction.

Abstract:This investigation focused on the three-dimensional (3D) seepage field simulation of an asphaltic concrete core rockfill dam (ACRD) under the design water level conditions. At first, the finite element theory of seepage is introduced in the arid area; then, a hydro-junction projection on the Nuer River in Xinjiang is selected as engineering background, the finite element model of a seepage field of an asphaltic and concrete core rockfill dam under the design water level condition is established, and a boundary condition is determined, and the next distribution of a seepage field of different profiles are plotted, and the monitoring value of different points is compared with the finite element solution; conclusions can be drawn that when the antiseepage system of the dam foundation is good, the water level at the downstream side of the core wall is greatly reduced; for the dam foundation, the effects of reducing head of the cutoff wall are rather obvious, and for the dam body, certain leakage defects at the joint of an impermeable body in the cross sections 0 + 456.5 m and 0 + 540 m can exist. For the dam-around seepage, the hydrogeological condition conforms to the actual conditions. These conclusions can provide great significance for the future design.

Abstract:There are many practical problems in the rapid development of the concrete face rockfill dam, which mainly focus on a large number of cracks and extrusion breakages in the face slab caused by temperature-induced stress, shrinkage stress, deformation of dam and other reasons, which eventually lead to leakage, threatening the safety of the dam. To solve this problem, the three-dimensional finite element analysis method is combined with the block equivalent continuum method to calculate the three-dimensional seepage field of the dam area, in order to study the seepage characteristics of numerous and unevenly distributed cracks in the concrete face rockfill dam; then, the corresponding head distribution and seepage characteristics, including the phreatic line, the hydraulic gradient and the seepage discharge, were obtained. The findings of this paper validate the accuracy and reliability of the block equivalent continuum method. It not only meets the requirements of simulation accuracy, but also can obtain the characteristics of the local seepage field near the crack. At the same time, it greatly simplifies the finite element model and significantly improves the efficiency of seepage calculation. This method provides a reference for the seepage analysis of similar projects.

Abstract:The seepage field and stability of the concrete-faced rockfill dam (CFRD) in Gongboxia Hydropower Project, when cracks are occurred to the face plate, are analyzed. The computation meshes are generated according to the designed section graph and topographic map. A 3-D fixed-mesh FEM is applied to adapt the conditions of horizontal or vertical cracks. The flow field and seepage discharges in cases of different crack widths and orientations are obtained. The analysis results show that the permeability of bed rock may greatly affect the flow fields and the seepage gradient in the padding zone near the crack is high, but it will decrease rapidly with the increase of distance from the crack. The orientation and size of the crack are the major factors affecting the flow field in the padding zone near the crack.

Abstract:Seepage analysis is the central issue in solving the unconfined seepage problems from complex earth‐rock dams. The precision and efficiency of seepage simulation are the major technical barriers to exploring the heterogeneities of hydrological state variables in dams. This paper addresses the heterogeneity of the saturated‐unsaturated zones of dams and develops the smoothed finite element method (S‐FEM) capable of solving the seepage problem in domains with arbitrary geometry and continuously varied permeability. The gradient smoothing technique, in which the area integrals are transformed into the line integrals around edges of smoothing cells, is used to obtain the element matrices, which is used to simplify the solution of seepage problem. To be specific, we employ Van Genuchten method to modify the hydraulic conductivity of unsaturated zones medium and Signorini condition to convert the outflow boundary into the water head boundaries. The precision of the proposed method together with the importance of considering the unsaturated zones are first deliberated by the verification tests. Then, to quantify the impacts on the hydrological state variables, we focus on the heterogeneity of the entire zones through exploratory tests. The results show that the presence of leakage anomalies and auxiliary dam structures has a significant effect on the redistribution of hydrological state variables, which convinces that the findings may lay the foundation for the development of multi‐parameter seepage inversion and the derivation of coupled hydro‐geophysical inversion using the most appropriate starting model.

Abstract:The detailed analyses of the geological conditions of the Xiluodu arch dam foundation under stressseepage coupling are carried out.Based on field monitoring data,the paper tries to understand the mechanism of seepage coupling in the foundation of Xiluodu dam,where seepage pressure and water level fluctuation are considered.In this paper,the seepage parameters and boundary conditions are determined based on the seepage simulations in combination of field monitoring.The relationship between permeability and stress-deformation is established.By using the nonlinear finite element method,the integrity seepage stability of dam foundation in the typical stages of construction period is numerically studied.Based on the deformations and compressive stresses obtained by numerical simulations and field monitoring data,the seepage state of the dam foundation during construction is obtained.Next,seepage stabilities of dam during operation period are predicted,which may be employed for seepage controlling system of the dam site.Finally,it is noted that the safety and construction quality of the dam during impounding process should be ensured.

Abstract:The Kunlong Hydropower has high water head and complex geologic environment. It is necessary to study the seepage field and the seepage control measure. In order to set up a three dimensional seepage numerical model around the dam site, double fracture seepage systems contained main fractures network and fractured rock masses is adopted. "Pipe to represent a drain hole" and "fissure to represent a line of holes" methods are used in simulation of drainage curtain. After setting boundary conditions and calculating parameter appropriately, the whole seepage field around the Kunlong Dam is calculated with the finite element method. The optimal depths of the impervious curtain and drainage curtain are determined by sensitive analysis. The implications of the analysis results on the design of the project are significant.

Abstract:With a large catchment area, stratified groundwater on the left and right bank, developed unloading fissures in the dam foundation rock, and prominent permeability anisotropy in columnar jointed basalt, the dam site of Baihetan Hydropower Station possesses complex seepage control measures. Moreover, the water head difference between the upstream and downstream can reach 235 m after impoundment, and thus, the seepage field of the dam site area will be extremely intricate. In this study, we analyzed the seepage field characteristics of the dam foundation during impoundment with field measurement data, and conducted numerical simulation of seepage field under normal water level condition with steady seepage calculation method. With the field measurement data and the numerical simulation results, we evaluated the performance of the seepage control system and revealed the movement process of the seepage flow in the dam foundation. The analysis results show that the impervious curtain can effectively stop the reservoir water from flowing to downstream side of the dam through the rock masses in the dam foundation, the drainage holes of the dam foundation can successfully mitigate the uplift pressure, and thus, the stability of the dam body has been guaranteed by the current seepage control system. Besides, driven by high water head difference, the reservoir water penetrates downstream through the deficient area of the impermeable curtain and flows along the micro-cracks developed in rock layers P 2 β 3 2−2 and P 2 β 3 2−1 , then discharges through the drainage holes in the dam foundation.

Abstract:A very large percentage of piping cases have been brought about by internal erosion, which is the primary cause of dam failures. This study developed a numerical model to simulate the pipe progression in a levee foundation by analyzing the inception and transportation of erodible particles from the soil fabric. An approach that considers the turbulent flow in an erodible pipe and the seepage flow in the remaining area of a levee foundation is employed to capture the main hydraulic characteristics of piping. The mechanical analysis of individual erodible particles is considered to quantify the critical condition for particle inception in an erodible pipe. In addition, physical piping model tests are numerically simulated to examine the proposed approach. The simulation demonstrates that the flow in a pipe can progress backward from downstream to upstream when the upstream water head reaches a critical value. Furthermore, the function mechanism of a cut-off wall can be explained by this model. The results have revealed that this model can reproduce the experimental data, such as the critical water head and the progression time, which are obtained from the physical model. The relationship between the depth of a suspended cut-off wall and the critical water head is obtained; this relationship facilitates the practical design of the critical depth of a cut-off wall for a given water head.
Anisotropic Seepage Analysis Of A Concrete-Faced Rockfill Dam

Abstract:A significant anisotropy is found in the permeability coefficient of the rockfill of a concrete-faced rockfill darn. A two-dimensional and three-dimensional fixed-mesh FEM seepage analysis is conducted on the Jishixia concrete-faced rockfill dam under both normal and abnormal conditions where a crack occurs in the slab. The FEM meshes were obtained according to the designed schemes and topography of the dam. The seepage field and seepage amount of the dam were calculated. The effect of the crack's location on the seepage is also discussed. The calculation results show that the dam is stable in the seepage aspect under the normal design water level. The position of the crack has a significant effect on the seepage field and seepage amount of the dam.

Abstract:High-pressure hydraulic fracturing (HF) of cracks is the crucial factor in the safety-assessment of high concrete dams, and fluid–structure interaction in HF is the key to accurately calculate the fluid pressure within cracks. In this study, a hybrid approach combining the extended finite element method (XFEM) and the finite volume method (FVM) is introduced to simulate HF in concrete dams. Through the hybrid approach XFEM-FVM, we can obtain water pressure distribution within cracks, which reflects the coupling relationship between water pressure and fracture width. This approach is verified by an example, and the numerical results agree well with the corresponding analytic solutions. Then, we use it to simulate the HF in a concrete gravity dam. Results show that, in contrast to the constant water pressure distribution within cracks, the distribution calculated by XFEM-FVM varies with time and leads to the bigger crack extension angle, contrary to growth length. It also illustrates the significance of considering fluid–structure interaction in HF progress. This study reveals that the approach is a very efficient tool for HF simulation in concrete dam.

Numerical Simulation of Mengdigou Arch Dam Based on Nonlinear Finite Elements

Abstract:Mengdigou Hydropower Station is the fifth cascade hydropower station in Yalong River's middle reaches. Due to the maximum dam height of 200 m and complex geological conditions, it is of significant importance for engineering safety to ensure the dam's good workability and global stability after impounding. Based on deformation reinforcement theory (DRT), a 3D finite element model of Mengdigou is built to analyze the behavior of the dam's displacements, plastic zones extension and global stability under both normal and overloading conditions. The results show that the displacements and overloading capacity meet the stability requirement. The introduction of fillet significantly reduces the plastic complementary energy of both the dam and base, which is beneficial to the global stability. Two ways of replacement treatment for f4 fault are investigated. It turns out to be more favorable using shallow replacement together with grid replacement for the dam's global stability.

Abstract:In this paper,a 3-D finite element model is built according to the hydrogeological and engineering geological conditions of the study area,using FEMWATER module of GMS(Groundwater Modeling System).The FEMWATER module is used to compute the model in a steady state.The paper analyzes the impact of the drainage gallery on the seepage flow field and the state of the seepage flow field under different working conditions and the discharge from the gallery is also calculated.Conclusion can be drawn that the FEMWATER is effective for building models under complex hydrogeological conditions.The calculated result of the maximal drainage is much less than that of the designed discharge.As a result,the size of drainage gallery can be reduced aptly for the study area.

Abstract:Ensuring the long-term, efficient, and safe operation of reservoir dams relies on the slope stability of embankment dams. Periodic fluctuations of the reservoir water level due to reservoir scheduling operations make the slope of the reservoir bank vulnerable to instability. To investigate the influence of various factors and their interactions with embankment dam slope stability under changing reservoir water levels, a global sensitivity analysis method is proposed that accounts for seepage–stress coupling. An embankment dam in Shaanxi Province, China, is studied as an example, with COMSOL Multiphysics software simulating the seepage and slope stability of the dam under fluctuating reservoir water level conditions and seepage–stress coupling. The global sensitivity analysis of factors affecting dam slope stability is accomplished by combining Plackett–Burman and Box–Behnken experimental designs, with ANOVA determining the sensitivity of each factor and interaction term. The results demonstrate that during the impoundment period of the reservoir, the saturation line is concave, and the overall stability safety of the dam slope increases first and then tends to be stable, according to the coefficient. The internal friction angle φ, cohesion c, and soil density ρs represent the three most sensitive factors affecting the stability and safety of the dam slope, while c × ρs is a second-order interaction term with significant sensitivity to the stability and safety coefficient of the dam slope. The reservoir drainage period infiltration line is convex, and dam slope stability first reduced and then increased. The magnitude of water level change H, internal friction angle φ, cohesion c, and soil density ρs are the four most sensitive factors for the coefficient of safety of dam slope stability, while c × ρs, H × ρs, and φ × ρs are the second-order interaction terms with significant sensitivity to the coefficient of safety of dam slope stability. These research findings and methods can offer valuable technical support and reference for the investigation and evaluation of the stability of embankment dam slopes.
