Abstract:The iron and steel production industry entails high resource and energy consumption and generates a serious amount of waste and pollution. The need to conserve energy and reduce emissions underlines the importance of correctly and comprehensively evaluating the iron and steel industrial systems. Properly evaluating the utilization levels of resources and energy is one of the important tasks. In this publication I introduce a thermodynamic exergy analysis method to analyze and evaluate iron and steel industrial systems. The utilization levels of resources and energy are evaluated by comparing the result of the exergy calculation for the traditional production chain and for the material and energy recycling eco-industrial chain. The systemic problems are thus revealed and measures for improvement are proposed, providing a theoretical basis for planning and construction of iron and steel eco-industrial parks. ©2009 IEEE.

Abstract:The recent progress and development of ironmaking in China as of 2019 was introduced. China has achieved a remarkable progress in eliminating outdated production capacity of steel industry, accomplishing the upper limit target ahead of schedule to reduce production capacity by 150 million tons during the thirteenth Five-Year plan. The blast furnaces are gradually forming a four-element burden structure of "sinter+pellet+lump+scrap", adapting to the increase of scrap supply in society. Large-scale blast furnaces has been the development trend, 25 blast furnaces with inner volume exceeding 4000 m3 are in operation by now. In order to cope with the environmental protection policy and benefit from the sufficient supply of steel, the direct reduction process has gained a booming development opportunity in China. Although the smelting reduction has formed a certain scale in China, it still cannot compete with blast furnace ironmaking process in terms of energy utilization efficiency.

Abstract:Blast furnace (BF) ironmaking is dominant for reducing pollution emission and energy consumption in iron and steel industry. Under the increasingly strict environmental pressure, some innovative technologies of BF ironmaking for environmental protection have been developed and applied in actual operating facilities. The current state of BF ironmaking in Europe, America, Japan, and China were briefly overviewed. Moreover, some innovative BF ironmaking technologies aiming at environmental harmony and operation intellectualization in the world, such as waste gas recycling sintering, BF operation with coke oven gas injection, ferro-coke, lime coating coke, BF visualization and intellectualization, were roundly summarized. Finally, some discussion on the technologies was carried out and the development trends of BF ironmaking were pointed out. The review could provide references and supports for the progress of environment-friendly technologies of BF ironmaking, thereby promoting their practical applications and achieving sustainable development of BF ironmaking, especially for Chinese ironmaking industry.

Abstract:Blast furnace (BF) ironmaking is the most important process that produces hot metal (HM) from iron-bearing materials continuously, rapidly, and efficiently. To date, the process is considered to have reached its limit in view of the achieved high process efficiency. In addition, the required high-quality materials are expensive and gradually getting depleted. Hot gas injection (HGI) into the shaft of the BF is an emerging technology recognized potential to solve the aforementioned problems. However, so far, limited information and studies are available, most of which are preliminary studies with regard to the feasibility and aerodynamics of the technology. This hindered the understanding and thus the effective use of this technology. This work presents a numerical study of the multiphase flow, heat, and mass transfer in a BF by a CFD-based process model. The effects of injection composition in terms of CO and CO2 contents in HGI are studied first. The calculated results reveal that HGI of 100% CO delivers the best BF performance. Then, the effects of key variables in relation to HGI of 100% CO, including position, rate, and temperature, are systematically studied. The in-furnace states and overall performance parameters have been analysed in detail. The results show that, through appropriate control of the injection variables, it is possible to achieve improved BF performance including low fuel rate and high productivity, which are considerably affected by the HGI parameters. The BF process model is also demonstrated to be a cost-effective tool in optimizing the key variables of HGI in BF for obtaining optimum process efficiency.

Abstract:Iron and steel industry is an essential and sizable sector for industrialized economies. Since it is capital and energy extensive, companies have been putting consistent emphasis on technology advances in the production process to increase productivity and to save energy. The modern integrated process of steelmaking, continuous casting and hot rolling (SM–CC–HR) directly connects the steelmaking furnace, the continuous caster and the hot rolling mill with hot metal flow and makes a synchronized production. Such a process has many advantages over the traditional cold charge process. However, it also brings new challenges for production planning and scheduling. In this paper we first give a comparative analysis of the production processes and production management problems for the SM–CC–HR and the traditional cold charge process. We then review planning and scheduling systems developed and methods used for SM–CC–HR production. Finally some key issues for further research in this field are discussed.

Abstract:The output of domestic arc furnace steel increased year by year which was near to 50 million ton in 2007. The number of large electric arc furnace increased obviously,in 2007 the output of≥50 t electric arc furnaces was about 83.5%of total electric arc steel,electric consumption decreased near to 300 kWh/t with tap-to-tap time≤60 min and average electrode consumption 2.43 kg/t,but the processes related to charging,steel grade,energy saving and environmental protection need to be promoted.The domestic electric arc steelmaking process is forging ahead.

The progress of on-going project has been introduced in this paper, it is expected that strength doubled and/or service life double on the basis of good comprehensive properties in large quantity utilizations might be reached from our study.

Abstract:<p>Integrated analysis and optimization of material and energy flows in the iron and steel industry have drawn considerable interest from steelmakers, energy engineers, policymakers, financial firms, and academic researchers. Numerous publications in this area have identified their great potential to bring significant benefits and innovation. Although much technical work has been done to analyze and optimize material and energy flows, there is a lack of overview of material and energy flows of the iron and steel industry. To fill this gap, this work first provides an overview of different steel production routes. Next, the modelling, scheduling and interrelation regarding material and energy flows in the iron and steel industry are presented by thoroughly reviewing the existing literature. This study selects eighty publications on the material and energy flows of steelworks, from which a map of the potential of integrating material and energy flows for iron and steel sites is constructed. The paper discusses the challenges to be overcome and the future directions of material and energy flow research in the iron and steel industry, including the fundamental understandings of flow mechanisms, the dynamic material and energy flow scheduling and optimization, the synergy between material and energy flows, flexible production processes and flexible energy systems, smart steel manufacturing and smart energy systems, and revolutionary steelmaking routes and technologies.</p>

Abstract:Iron and steel making is one of the most intense energy consuming in the industrial sectors. The intensive utilization of fossil carbon in the ironmaking blast furnace (BF) is related directly to CO2 emission and global warming. Lowering the energy consumption and CO2 emission from BF comes on the top priorities from both economic and environmental aspects. The BF has undergone tremendous modifications and development to increase production and improve the overall efficiency. Both technological development and scientific research drive one another to reach optimum operation conditions, which are very close to the ideal conditions; however, further development is still required to meet the stringent environmental regulations. The present article provides a comprehensive review of recent research and development which were carried out in modern blast furnace to increase the productivity meanwhile reduce the energy consumption and CO2 emission to meet the demand of steel market and the environmental protection. The recent technological and metallurgical improvements in the BF are intensively discussed including: (i) modifications of BF design, top charging and measuring system, (ii) upgrading of conventional top charging burden and alternative agglomerates, (iii) developing of tuyeres injection system and injected materials, and (iv) potentials of waste heat recovery and usage. These topics are reviewed and discussed in some details to elucidate the potential of recent progress in BF technology in saving the energy consumption and lowering CO2 emission. In this paper, the major research and development which have been carried out in ironmaking BF technology are reviewed with an overview of the future prospects.

It is indicated that the implementation of BF-BOF route shall be proceeded along the direction of scale magnification, enhancement in compactness, continuity and product quality; the implementation of Scrap-EAF route shall be proceeded properly in accordance with market demands, competence of individual enterprise and power supply.

Abstract:In today's environment, domestic steelmaking enterprises, and especially steelmaking within them, are experiencing a significant negative impact from the shortage of high-quality raw materials and the lack of stability of incoming charge materials. At the same time, in order to overcome these problems, technical solutions are used in the world practice for out-of-furnace treatment of charge materials, including liquid iron. Thus, an urgent issue of domestic metallurgical science is to determine the effectiveness of the most common methods of out-of-furnace pig iron treatment in relation to the current realities of domestic steelmaking. A general classification of technical solutions for out-of-furnace pig iron refining has been made and a comparative analysis of the efficiency of the technologies under consideration has been performed. Engineering calculations were performed using mathematical models of material and heat balances of converter smelting, adapted for 250-ton oxygen converters, using a top tuyere of classical design. The influence of the considered technical solutions for out-of-furnace iron treatment on such basic technological indicators of BOF melting as specific consumption of liquid iron, specific consumption of lime, and yield of usable iron was analyzed. The comparison was carried out in relation to the indicators of basic melting without the use of out-of-furnace melt treatment technologies. The expediency of using out-of-furnace refining methods based on the injection of globular magnesium and mixtures of the CaO-Mg system was confirmed. As for the complex refining technologies, it was determined that it is advisable to develop a technology for domestic conditions that provides for the removal of sulfur and phosphorus from the melt without significantly reducing the concentration of silicon in the melt.

Abstract:Blast furnace (BF) ironmaking is the most typical "black box" process, and its complexity and uncertainty bring forth great challenges for furnace condition judgment and BF operation. Rich data resources for BF ironmaking are available, and the rapid development of data science and intelligent technology will provide an effective means to solve the uncertainty problem in the BF ironmaking process. This work focused on the application of artificial intelligence technology in BF ironmaking. The current intelligent BF ironmaking technology was summarized and analyzed from five aspects. These aspects include BF data management, the analyses of time delay and correlation, the prediction of BF key variables, the evaluation of BF status, and the multi-objective intelligent optimization of BF operations. Solutions and suggestions were offered for the problems in the current progress, and some outlooks for future prospects and technological breakthroughs were added. To effectively improve the BF data quality, we comprehensively considered the data problems and the characteristics of algorithms and selected the data processing method scientifically. For analyzing important BF characteristics, the effect of the delay was eliminated to ensure an accurate logical relationship between the BF parameters and economic indicators. As for BF parameter prediction and BF status evaluation, a BF intelligence model that integrates data information and process mechanism was built to effectively achieve the accurate prediction of BF key indexes and the scientific evaluation of BF status. During the optimization of BF parameters, low risk, low cost, and high return were used as the optimization criteria, and while pursuing the optimization effect, the feasibility and site operation cost were considered comprehensively. This work will help increase the process operator's overall awareness and understanding of intelligent BF technology. Additionally, combining big data technology with the process will improve the practicality of data models in actual production and promote the application of intelligent technology in BF ironmaking.

Abstract:As the key component during steelmaking process, the production in steelmaking plants involves four stages in process: hot metal pretreatment, steelmaking, secondary metallurgy and continuous casting. This paper is to describe the fine production in steelmaking plants, which is elaborated from fine control of productive technology, fine configuration and reliable operation of process facilities, and fine control of production process. Meanwhile, recent research progress concerning fine production in steelmaking plants will be reviewed. The technology of fine production in steelmaking plants will be introduced combined with research cases on integration of process models and key techniques. Moreover, fine production in steelmaking plants is of great importance to the high-quality, high-efficiency, low-cost, and energy-saving production in steel manufacturing process.

Abstract:Comprehensive control of greenhouse gas emissions and response to climate change are concerns of countries around the world to protect living homes. The steel industry is responsible for over 10% of global CO2 emissions, with approximately 80% of these emissions coming from the ironmaking process. Great efforts have been made in both blast furnace (BF) and non-blast furnace ironmaking processes to reduce emissions. Fluidized bed technology has become a crucial method used to process iron ore powder in non-blast furnace ironmaking, such as smelting reduction and direct reduction. This paper introduces the working principle and several typical working states of fluidized bed (FB) technology to clarify the key to fluidized bed process operation. And different kinds of fluidized bed ironmaking processes in recent decades are compared, including FIOR, DIOS, Circored, Circofer, FINMET, HIsmelt, FINEX, etc. Finally, the possible problems and solutions in the future development of fluidized bed ironmaking are analyzed. Hope that this work can contribute to the advancement of basic theory and technology research in fluidized bed reduction, and provide support for hydrogen metallurgy in the steel industry.Graphical Abstract
