Abstract:Based on the literatures about performance models and the implicit performance model, the present study used the experimental simulation method, analyzed the effect of the implicit performance model on managerial decisions. It showed that in different managerial decision tasks, decision makers had different implicit performance models; the implicit model changed with the tasks; the implicit model affected the decision biases, and the contextual performance had compensation effects on task performance to some degree.

Abstract:Using a top management simulation game as the experimental task, this research explored the influence of epistemic motivation on a shared mental model and group decision making performance. The results indicated that: (1) There was no difference in group discussion duration between the high epistemic motivation group and the low epistemic motivation group; (2) The accuracy of shared mental model of the high epistemic motivation group was higher than that of the low epistemic motivation group, but there was no significant difference in the similarity of shared mental model; (3) But the mediator effect of the accuracy of the shared mental model between epistemic motivation and the group decision-making performance was not remarkable. These results demonstrate that an abundance of epistemic motivation would lead to more accurate mental models.

Abstract:A software project is typically completed as a result of a collective effort done by individuals of different personalities. Personality reflects differences among people in behaviour patterns, communication, cognition and emotion. It often impacts relationships and collaborative work, and software engineering teamwork is no exception. Some personalities are more likely to click while others to clash. A number of studies have investigated the relationship between personality and collaborative work success. However, most of them are done in a laboratory setting, do not involve professionals, or consider non software engineering tasks. Additionally, they only answer a limited set of questions, and many other questions remain open. To enrich the existing body of work, we study professionals working on real software projects, answering a new set of research questions that assess linkages between project manager personality and team personality composition and project success. In particular, our study investigates 28 recently completed software projects, which contain a total of 346 professionals, in 2 large IT companies. We asked project members to do a DISC ( Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Compliant) personality test, and correlated the test outcomes with project success scores measured in six different dimensions. The scores were given by managers of three office as part of their regular day-today work. Our results show that project teams with dominant managers, along with those with more influential members and less dominant members, have higher success scores. This work provides new insights to construct a personality matching strategy that can contribute to building an effective project team.

Abstract:In the practice of business management in organization,how to increase employees' performance by motivating them effectively is a long haul problem.In this paper,we first review the existing theories about extrinsic motivation and intrinsic motivation,summarize the relationship and explain the latent mechanism between them using cognitive evaluation theory and self-determination theory,and point out their effects on employees' performance,job satisfaction,and other organizational outcomes.Then we establish the composite motivation model of intrinsic and extrinsic compensation,including specific motivation strategies of such three types as push,pull and contingence to maximize the motivation effects on employees.Lastly,we make some practical suggestions for organizations in employee motivation based on the three specific motivation strategies,and also provide a new research direction in the area of motivation and compensation in the future.

Based on the model, all financial incentives are classified into two kinds - short-run incentive and long-run incentive, the interaction between these two kinds of incentives are discussed, and the impacts of these two incentives on employee's working motivation are explored in deep. Some guidelines are provided for crafting of real enterprise financial incentive system.

Abstract:We propose an extended principal-agent model considering employee commitment and describe how to motivate committed agent, who not only shows regard for his own income but also cares the organizational benefit. The principal also would like to provide support to such an agent and his utility depends on both the final profit and the payoff to the agent. There are some interesting insights into the characteristic of optimal contracts: First, commitment is an effective motivator and committed employee needs less monetary inducement to perform his job well than one who not. More specifically, undifferentiated pay is sufficient in incentivizing committed agent to implement high effort in some cases. Second, commitment and wage differential are substitutable to each other in the optimal incentive compensation design. Third, commitment is not always good for organizational efficiency when the increase in employee commitment relies on the principal’s support. Our model's finding is consistent with employee incentive in some organizations, and also help to incentive mechanism design under wages differential constraints and understanding excessive compensation.

Abstract:Background: New energy has become a key trend for global energy industry development. Talent plays a very critical role in the enhancement of new energy enterprise competitiveness. As a key component of talent, managers have been attracting more and more attention. The increase in job performance relies on, to a certain extent, incentive mechanism. Based on the Two-factor Theory, differences in influences and effects of different incentives on management performance have been checked in this paper from an empirical perspective. Methods: This paper selects the middle and low level managers in new energy enterprises as research samples and classifies the managers' performance into task performance, contextual performance and innovation performance. It uses manager performance questionnaires and intrinsic-extrinsic incentive factor questionnaires to investigate and study the effects and then uses Amos software to analyze the inner link between the intrinsic-extrinsic incentives and job performance. Results: Extrinsic incentives affect task performance and innovation performance positively. Intrinsic incentives impose active significant effects on task performance, contextual performance, and innovation performance. The intrinsic incentive plays a more important role than the extrinsic incentive. Conclusions: Both the intrinsic-extrinsic incentives affect manager performance positively and the intrinsic incentive plays a more important role than the extrinsic incentive. Several suggestions to management should be given based on these results.

Abstract:This paper will provide some explanations for the exist-ing mixed empirical evidence regarding the relationship between executive incentives and firm risk from the viewpoint of classifying executive incentives.The study is based on the standard principal-agent model with a more actual assumption that executives are able to influence or control firm idiosyncratic risk,which relaxes and substitutes the assumption that firm risk is totally independent of executive actions.Through examining the effects of hidden actions,effort cost and risk aversion on executive incentives,the authors of this article clearly classify executive incentives into such two types as Effort-enhancing Incentive(β effort Incentive)and Risk-seeking Incentive(β risk Incentive).In order to provide theβ effort Incentive,it is enough that executive compensation is the linear function of firm performance,which will show the positive relationship between executive compensation and firm performance,and the negative relationship between executive incentives and firm risk.However,to provide theβ risk incentive,executive compensation should be the convex function of firm performance,which will show the positive relationship between executive compensation and firm performance,and the positive relationship between executive incentives and firm risk.In detail,theβ effort incentive is negatively related to both firm systematic risk and firm idiosyncratic risk,but theβ risk incentive is positively related to firm idiosyncratic risk if the executive incen-tive's wealth effect is bigger than its risk-aversion effect.The au-thors believe that their classifying of executive incentives can help to exploit the general equilibrium relationship between executive incentives and firm risk,and future researches based on the above incentive classification will be important improvements in the field.

Abstract:Based on the value-based leadership(VBL) theory and the preliminary findings obtained from an empirical study of Chinese business leaders, we propose a new model addressing the dynamic relationships among firm environment, VBL behaviors and leadership effectiveness; and test the model using data collected from 95 firms. Results show that VBL behaviors help improve leadership effectiveness when the company faces intense external competition, even though intensive competition is naturally negative to leadership effectiveness. Value-based leadership can help firms to survive through extremely tough circumstances.

Abstract:This study explored the mechanism of executive research backgrounds on enterprise innovation and the moderator of business environment and executive incentives based on the physics -reason - human (Wuli-Shili-Renli, WSR) methodology, used the data of Listed Companies in CSMAR database from 2017 to 2021. It found that every 1% increase in executives with scientific research backgrounds will lead to an increase of 0.016%, 0.160% and 0.010% in innovation input, innovation output and innovation quality respectively in enterprises; every 1% increase in executives with research and development (R&D) backgrounds will decline innovation input by 0.013%, while innovation output and innovation quality in enterprises will increase by 0.257% and 0.026% respectively. Optimizing the business environment can not only stimulate executives' innovation input, but also stimulate their high-quality and efficient innovation output. Salary incentives is easy to induce innovative output of executives with research backgrounds, which is heavy on quantity rather than quality, while equity incentives is the opposite. This study helps enterprises carry out innovation decision-making and practice considering "physics", "reason" and "human ".

Where there's a will, there's a way: Intrinsic motivational orientation, idea quality, and idea implementation

Abstract:The innovation process can be conceptualized as encompassing two stages: idea generation and idea implementation. However, to date, more early research has been focused on the idea generation stage, and these two subfields still remain stubbornly disconnected from one another. To integrate these two disparate subfields and advance our comprehensive understanding of the innovation process, the current study relied on self-determination theory and Yale attitude change approach to examine the effect of intrinsic motivational orientation of idea generators on idea quality, and further tested the effect of idea quality, rewards of the idea generators, and their interaction on idea implementation. To test the hypotheses in the proposed model, we collected data from 251 idea generators, 7 idea evaluators and the manager of an innovative proposal project at 3 different time points in a large financial company. In the first wave, 440 ideas proposed by 440 idea generators were recorded. In the second wave, all of the idea generators were invited to complete a questionnaire, including demographic information and intrinsic motivational orientation, and the number of valid questionnaires was 251; moreover, 7 in-house experts assessed the idea generators and the quality of each idea. Approximately six months later, the manager of this project reported the implementation degree of all of the ideas. Our hypotheses were examined using SPSS 22.0. By analyzing the multi-time and multi-source data, it was found in this study that: (1) intrinsic motivational orientation of the idea generators has a significantly positive effect on idea quality; (2) idea quality further facilitates idea implementation; (3) rewards of the idea generators positively influence idea implementation; and (4) idea quality and rewards of the idea generators interact to predict idea implementation. The findings presented here contribute to innovation literature in the following ways. First, this study tracks the innovation process from idea generation to idea implementation, bridging the theoretical divide between creativity research and idea implementation research. Second, this study clarifies the positive effect of intrinsic motivational orientation on idea quality, which is a beneficial supplement to, and promotion of the existing research on the relationship between intrinsic motivation and creativity. Third, Yale attitude change theory is introduced into idea implementation research, which not only expands the application scope of this theory, but also enriches theoretical perspectives of idea implementation research.

Abstract:Traditional credit-risk evaluation methods focus mainly on static credit evaluation and rarely consider incentive factors. This paper proposes a comprehensive method of credit-risk evaluation based on dynamic incentives. First, an “explicit incentive” model is constructed based on the firm's current financial standing, and an “implicit incentive” model is subsequently developed focusing on the trend of the firm's past performance. Geometric (or arithmetic) procedures are applied to integrate the two models. To validate the proposed approach, we apply it to 12 publicly traded companies, each with 24 quarters and 20 indicators. We find the proposed integrated evaluation model outperforms the conventional models by better reflecting the key credit-risk management concept of “motivation and guidance”.

Abstract:How to effectively stimulate employees' creative behavior is a hot topic in the field of organizational behavior. Based on conservation of resources theory and substitutes for leadership theory, this paper discusses the impact of high-commitment work systems on employees' creative behavior and the roles of employees' wellbeing and CEO inclusive leadership. By constructing a cross-level structural equation model and analyzing the paired data of 86 CEOs, 86 HR managers and 489 employees, the results show that: (1) high-commitment work systems have positive impact on employees' creative behavior; (2) employee's wellbeing mediates the process of high-commitment work systems driving employees' creative behavior; and (3) CEO inclusive leadership negatively moderates the relationship between high-commitment work systems and employees' wellbeing, and further negatively moderates the indirect effect of high-commitment work systems on employees' creative behavior through employees' wellbeing, that is, the lower the level of CEO inclusive leadership is, the stronger the impact of high-commitment work systems on employees' creative behavior through employees' wellbeing will be.

Abstract:This agent-based model contributes to a theory of corporate culture in which company performance and employees' behaviour result from the interaction between financial incentives, motivational factors and endogenous social norms. Employees' personal values are the main drivers of behaviour. They shape agents' decisions about how much of their working time to devote to individual tasks, cooperative, and shirking activities. The model incorporates two aspects of the management style, analysed both in isolation and combination: (i) monitoring efforts affecting intrinsic motivation, i.e. the firm is either trusting or controlling, and (ii) remuneration schemes affecting extrinsic motivation, i.e. individual or group rewards. The simulations show that financial incentives can (i) lead to inefficient levels of cooperation, and (ii) reinforce value-driven behaviours, amplified by emergent social norms. The company achieves the highest output with a flat wage and a trusting management. Employees that value self-direction highly are pivotal, since they are strongly (de-)motivated by the management style.

Abstract:There are several problems with the performance analysis of corporate human resource management (HRM), namely, the incomplete index system and the difficulty in decision-making under multiple fuzzy factors. To solve these problems, this paper improves the method for corporate HRM performance analysis (HRMPA). First, a novel corporate HRMPA index system was established under the principle of comprehensiveness. Next, the fuzzy closeness of corporate HRMPA was calculated based on fuzzy theory, and the extenics correlation coefficient of corporate HRMPA was computed with the aid of the extenics theory. Then, fuzzy extenics factors were introduced to create an integrated corporate HRMPA model. The proposed model was proved valid and feasible through case analysis. The research results shed new light on the theories of HRMPA and enjoy great applicable value in engineering.

Abstract:Purpose Based on the background of the restricted stock has gradually replaced stock option and has become the mainstream equity incentive model in China, this paper aims to investigate the which factors affect the choice of equity incentive model, and the impacts of equity incentive model. Design/methodology/approach The theoretical analysis is based on the game theory between shareholders and top executives. The empirical analysis is based on the detailed data of equity incentives in China's listed companies from 2006 to 2017; the logit method and least square method are implemented to estimate the regression coefficients and Black–Scholes options pricing model to estimate the value of restricted stock/option granted to the CEO. Findings This paper documents that enterprises with serious agency problems, high investment risks, high stock price synchronicity and great executive power are significantly and positively related to restricted stock. The main empirical findings still hold after several robust tests. In addition, restricted stock can significantly improve corporate performance when the performance evaluation index is strict and the validity period is long, while for the sample group with loose performance index and short validity period, restricted stock significantly reduces corporate performance. Originality/value This paper analyzes the "black box" of equity incentive model selection from the stakeholders' game perspective by constructing a game theory model to investigate the reasons for the choice of equity incentive model in various situations, which enriches the research in this field. Moreover, this paper finds that restricted stock has both incentive and welfare characteristics, and the rationality of performance appraisal goals is the key factor leading to the difference in incentive effects. Overall, the research indicates that only well-designed equity incentive plans can improve corporate performance, which contributes to regulators and practitioners to form a rational understanding of restricted stock model and provides a reference for their decision-making.

Abstract:Corporate executives have the decision-making power of resource allocation, and efficient resource allocation is an important measure of high-quality development of enterprises. It is a focal issue whether the compensation incentive can promote the executives to make better use of the enterprise resource allocation. We investigate this question using the data of the Chinese listed companies in 2015–2019 based on Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and fixed effect model. The results show the following: (1) both monetary compensation incentive and equity incentive can significantly improve the efficiency of resource allocation, and the former is more significant; (2) there is an inverted U-shaped relationship between perquisite consumption incentive and resource allocation efficiency; (3) the above conclusion is still true in state-owned enterprises; (4) in private enterprises, the effect of equity incentive is more effective, but the effect of perquisite consumption incentive is less significant. The results highlight the relationship between compensation incentive and enterprise resource allocation. Our study is expected to guide the executives to formulate reasonable compensation incentives and improve the efficiency of resource allocation.

Abstract:In Chinese market with dominance of "the Second Agency Problem" and large existence of implicit incentive,apparently few compensation and shareholdings of top management may still lead to severe excessive incentive.Different from most former researches,the paper not only clearly shows delayed effect of compensation incentive and ownership incentive for top management,but also finds significant marginal diminishing effect and excessive incentive of compensation incentive and ownership incentive for top management in empirical analyses which results in an inverted U-shape relationship with a lower left wing and higher right wing between compensation incentive and ownership incentive for top management and corporate performance.That is to say,not only insufficient incentive because of too low top management compensation and shareholding proportion but also excessive incentive because of too high top management compensation and shareholding proportion impair corporate performance.

Abstract:Based on principal-agent theory and optimal contract theory, companies use the method of increasing executives' shareholding to stimulate collaborative innovation. However, from the aspect of agency costs between management and shareholders (i.e. the first type) and between major shareholders and minority shareholders (i.e. the second type), the interests of management, shareholders and creditors will be unbalanced with the change of the marginal utility of executive equity <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://incentives.In" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> order to establish the correlation between the proportion of shares held by executives and investments in corporate innovation, we have chosen a range of publicly listed companies within China's A-share market as the focus of our study. Employing a multi-variable linear regression model, we aim to analyze this relationship thoroughly.The following models were developed: (1) the impact model of executive shareholding on corporate innovation investment; (2) the impact model of executive shareholding on two types of agency costs; (3)The model is employed to examine the mediating influence of the two categories of agency costs. Following both correlation and regression analyses, the findings confirm a meaningful and positive correlation between executives' shareholding and the augmentation of corporate innovation investments. Additionally, the results indicate that executive shareholding contributes to the reduction of the first type of agency cost, thereby fostering corporate innovation investment. However, simultaneously, it leads to an escalation in the second type of agency cost, thus impeding corporate innovation investment.
