Abstract:We propose an appearance-based face recognition method called the Laplacianface approach. By using Locality Preserving Projections (LPP), the face images are mapped into a face subspace for analysis. Different from Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) which effectively see only the Euclidean structure of face space, LPP finds an embedding that preserves local information, and obtains a face subspace that best detects the essential face manifold structure. The Laplacianfaces are the optimal linear approximations to the eigenfunctions of the Laplace Beltrami operator on the face manifold. In this way, the unwanted variations resulting from changes in lighting, facial expression, and pose may be eliminated or reduced. Theoretical analysis shows that PCA, LDA, and LPP can be obtained from different graph models. We compare the proposed Laplacianface approach with Eigenface and Fisherface methods on three different face data sets. Experimental results suggest that the proposed Laplacianface approach provides a better representation and achieves lower error rates in face recognition.

Abstract:Different eigenspace-based approaches have been proposed for the recognition of faces, i.e. eigenface, fisherface and Laplacianface. For fisherfaces, the original image space is reduced to an n-c dimensional subspace in which the standard LDA is carried out, where n is the number of training samples and c is the number of classes. In this paper, we present a spectral analysis of fisherface which shows that the initial PCA dimensionality reduction might be insufficient. The noise might not be completely eliminated. This is due to the fact that fisherface only takes into account the discriminating structure while ignores geometrical structure. Based on the theoretical analysis, we propose a new method, called enhanced fisherface, which takes into account the discriminating structure as well as the intrinsic geometrical structure. Experimental results show that the proposed approach is effective in improving the performance of face recognition.

Abstract:An attribute reduction method based on fuzzy rough set is applied for the result obtained by PCA method and the recognition process use neural network ensemble. The method avoids losing of information caused by dispersing before rough set attribute reduction. The reduction result can reflect the classification ability of the original information system completely. As a result, the recognition accuracy is improved. Meanwhile, computational complexity is reduced for the genetic algorithm.

Abstract:Facial feature extraction with enhanced discriminatory power plays an important role in face recognition (FR) applications. Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) is a powerful tool used for dimensionality reduction and feature extraction in FR tasks. However, the classification performance of traditional LDA is often degraded, due to two factors: 1) their classification accuracies suffer from the small sample size problem (SSSP), which widely exists in FR; 2) their Fisher discriminant criteria are not directly related to the classification ability. Recently, so-called direct fractional-step LDA (DF-LDA) algorithm has been proposed to solve this problem. In this paper, the limitations of DF-LDA are discussed and a novel DF-LDA has been proposed to solve those problems. The novel DF-LDA has been tested, in terms of classification accuracy, on two face databases. Results reveal that the proposed method outperforms the existing methods, including: the Eigenfaces, Fisherfaces, D-LDA, previous DF-LDA, and EFM methods.

Abstract:The accurate alignment for different face images acquired in different conditions is very difficult because face appearance and noise are complex and variable. For solving this question, an Improved Pairwise-constrained Multiple Metric Learning method (IPMML) is proposed as a classification metric, which can obtain a Mahalanobis matrix by PMML between a testing face image and a training face image instead of all training face images. However, the calculation of the IPMML is complicated and time consuming for the data with high dimension. Therefore, Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) is selected to decrease the feature dimension and enhance recognition accuracy. Thus, a novel face recognition method based on LDA and IPMML is proposed. First, the fisher features of a face image are extracted using the LDA method. Then, the extracted features are divided into a number of blocks according to the feature dimension and every block is changed to a column vector. Third, the IPMML is used to compute the Mahalanobis matrices between the testing sample blocks and every training sample blocks. Fourth, the final discriminative distance is obtained using the optimum Mahalanobis matrices. Finally, the Nearest Neighborhood Classifier (NNC) is performed to recognize face. The experimental results based on Yale, Extended Yale B, and AR Databases showed that the proposed method can recognize face effectively and reliably, especially for the little training sample number and misalignment conditions.

Abstract:An improved face recognition method based on Fisher linear discriminant analysis is proposed, which can deal with the problem that the class mean of training samples deviates from the center of this class in small sample size case. The feature vectors are resulted from Karhunen-Loeve (K-L) transformation, and the weight of each vector is obtained according to the distance between the feature vector and the others in the same class. After that, the new class means are calculated using the weighted feature vectors. And then the within-class scatter matrix and between-class scatter matrix are rebuilt, which improve the Fisher linear discriminant function. The experiments on ORL and Yale face databases show that the proposed method is superior to principe component analysis (PCA) and fisherface methods.

Abstract:Linear discriminant analysis (LDA)-based methods have been very successful in face recognition, yet little investigation has been done on the fusion of different LDA methods. Combination of two LDA methods which performed LDA on distinctly different subspaces may be effective in further improving the recognition performance. In this paper we first present two novel LDA-based methods, post-processed Fisherfaces (pFisherfaces) and bi-directional PCA plus LDA (BDPCA+LDA). pFisherfaces uses 2D-Gaussian filter to smooth classical Fisherfaces, and BDPCA+LDA is a LDA performed in the BDPCA subspace. Then we propose a combination framework of these two LDA-based approaches. Two popular face databases, the ORL and the FERET, are used to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed combination framework. The results of our experiments indicate that the combination framework is superior to pFisherfaces, BDPCA+LDA, and other appearance-based methods in terms of recognition accuracy.

Abstract:As an important image processing technology, face recognition is an active subject in the fields of biometrics, but the low recognition rate hampers its wider use. In order to improve the operation speed and precision, a modified PCA(Principal Component Analysis) based face recognition algorithm is proposed, before applying PCA transform, background removal operation based on skin-color detection is done first, simulation results show that the better efficiency can be achieved by the improved PCA method. Therefore, it is valid in face recognition.

Abstract:ppearance-based methods, especially linear discriminant analysis (LDA), have been very successful in facial feature extraction, but the recognition performance of LDA is often degraded by the so-called "small sample size" (SSS) problem. One popular solution to the SSS problem is principal component analysis(PCA)+LDA (Fisherfaces), but the LDA in other low-dimensional subspaces may be more effective. In this correspondence, we proposed a novel fast feature extraction technique, bidirectional PCA (BDPCA) plus LDA (BDPCA+LDA), which performs an LDA in the BDPCA subspace. Two face databases, the ORL and the Facial Recognition Technology (FERET) databases, are used to evaluate BDPCA+LDA. Experimental results show that BDPCA+LDA needs less computational and memory requirements and has a higher recognition accuracy than PCA+LD

Abstract:Achieving higher classification rate under various conditions is a challenging problem in face recognition community. This paper presents a combined feature Fisher classifier ((CFC)-C-2) approach for face recognition, which is robust to moderate changes of illumination, pose and facial expression. The success of this method lies in that it uses both facial global and local information for robust face representation while at the same time employs an enhanced Fisher linear discriminant model (EFM) for good generalization. Experiments on ORL and Yale face databases show that the proposed approach is superior to traditional methods, such as eigenfaces and fisherfaces.

Abstract:Ear recognition is a new kind of biometric identification technology now. Feature extraction is a key step in pattern recognition technology, which determines the accuracy of classification results. The method of single feature extraction can achieve high recognition rate under certain conditions, but the use of double feature extraction can overcome the limitation of single feature extraction. In order to improve the accuracy of classification results, this paper proposes a new method, that is, the method of complementary double feature extraction based on PCA and Fisherface, and we apply it to human ear image recognition. Experimental results on the ear image database provided by Beijing University of Science and Technology show that the ear recognition rate of the proposed method is significantly higher than the single feature extraction using PCA, Fisherface or ICA alone.

Abstract:We proposed a face recognition algorithm based on both the multilinear principal component analysis (MPCA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA). Compared with current traditional existing face recognition methods, our approach treats face images as multidimensional tensor in order to find the optimal tensor subspace for accomplishing dimension reduction. The LDA is used to project samples to a new discriminant feature space, while the K nearest neighbor (KNN) is adopted for sample set classification. The results of our study and the developed algorithm are validated with face databases ORL, FERET, and YALE and compared with PCA, MPCA, and PCA + LDA methods, which demonstrates an improvement in face recognition accuracy.

Abstract:This paper presents a new approach to face recognition using independent component analysis (ICA) and fuzzy support vector machine (FSVM). Firstly, 2D wavelet transform is adopted to obtain different level of wavelet coefficients. Secondly ICA is applied on the low-frequency which contains most discrimination information of the original face image. One criterion that not all ICs are useful for face recognition is demonstrated and a rule for selecting ICs is proposed. For reducing the computational cost, a fact ICA method is proposed. Then, FSVM classifier is designed for recognition. Lastly, this algorithm is tested on the ORL and Yale face databases and the experimental result is encouraging, which achieves comparatively high recognition accuracy and is more computationally efficient than using general PCA - based recognition method.

Abstract:Feature extraction specific to face recognition, an improved version of two-dimensional principal component analysis (2DPCA) named Two-directional and Modular Fuzzy 2DPCA (MF(2D)2PCA) is proposed in this paper. First, Fuzzy K-Nearest Neighbor algorithm is used to get the fuzzy membership degree matrix of training samples. Then, modular processing is done to training images, combing with fuzzy membership degree to construct the total scatter matrix in row and column directions, respectively. And then obtain a projection matrix. Finally, lower dimensional local facial features are extracted after the transformation based on projection matrix and an improved minimum distance classifier is employed to implement classification. This method makes use of local characteristic of face effectively and the distribution information of overlapping samples is introduced into the scatter matrix in the form of weights allocation. Experimental results on ORL and AR face database show that the proposed approach outperforms other traditional methods and has better adaptability.

Abstract:The standard PCA algorithm has two mainly disadvantages: one is computing complexity, The other is it can only process the faces have the same face expression. In order to solve these problems, a new face recognition method called SPCA( Statistical Principal Component Analysis Method) is proposed in this paper. First, an improved PCA algorithm is used to compute the eigen-vector and eigen-values of the face. Second, Bayesian rule is used to design the classification designer. The experimental result shows that the method introduced in this paper has the advantages of simple computation and high recognition rate. It can also process the faces have different expression, the recognition rate is up to 95.08%.

Abstract:Because of the low recognition rate by affinity propagation (AP) we propose an algorithm to make face recognition based on two dimension double PCA (2DDPCA) and affinity propagation in this paper. First we use two dimension principle component analysis (2DPCA) to compress the face images in horizontal direction, then we compress the features in vertical direction using 2DPCA again. At last we use affinity propagation classifying faces on the basis of face database. Compared to the original affinity propagation, the superiority of this method is that the speed of classification of large sample is faster and the recognition rate stabilized at a high level. The test results of ORL Face Database and Yale Face Database prove the effectiveness of this method.

Abstract:Principal Component Analysis (PCA) can effectively extract global features from images and has advantages of dimension reduction. During the dimension reduction process, because of the comparatively concentration of eigenvalues, the dimension is still larger than the best. To solve this problem, this paper presents the optimal-sample PCA (OS-PCA) for dimension reduction. By choosing the training samples and optimizing the covariance matrix, OS-PCA achieves the purpose of further dimension reduction. Because Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) has robustness of light, as well as Local Binary Pattern (LBP) is effective in describing local texture features, the paper combines DCT and LBP features to make up for the limitations of OS-PCA in facial expression representation. In order to utilize the advantages of collaboration features and classifiers, this paper constructs a facial expression recognition model, which is based on three layers of the optimal integration of multiple classifiers. Firstly, facial images are preprocessed. This step includes the detection of face from images and normalization. Then the OS-PCA, DCT and LBP features are delivered into the model.Finally, based on the best match combination between single classifier and single feature, the model completes the optimal integration of multiple features and multiple classifiers. Via voting mechanism, the model makes adaptive decisions for images that are still different to get the final recognition result. Experiments show that OS-PCA is more effective than PCA in dimension reduction. On the JAFFE and CK database, recognition rates are higher than 95% and 96%, and the proposed model shows brilliant time performance.

Abstract:Two-dimensional principal component analysis (2DPCA) for face recognition has been proposed which is based on 2D matrices. It needs more coefficients for feature vectors than principal component analysis (PCA). In this paper, we develop an idea which is working in the projective feature image obtained by 2DPCA on the original images i.e., image PCA, for efficient face representation and recognition. To test image PCA and evaluate its performance, a number of experiments are performed on two face image database: ORL and Yale face databases. The experimental results show that image PCA achieves the same or even higher recognition rate than 2DPCA, while the former needs less coefficients for feature vectors than the latter.

Abstract:An improved method based on wavelet packets fusion and 2DPCA is proposed. Firstly, the original face image is decomposed by wavelet packets at two levels, and four most conducive high-frequency sub-images are selected and fused to improve the performance of classification. Then, 2DPCA is carried out in high-frequency and low-frequency sub-graphs separately. Finally, the decision level fusion is used to get the recognition result. Experimental results show that the proposed method is effective to face recognition with Yale and JAFFE databases.
