Abstract:Financial development theory focuses its study on the relationship between financial development and economic growth.In the light of the two perspectives concerning economy's effect upon finance and finance's effect upon economy,this theory may be classified as phase theory and function theory.Firstly,this paper defines the three concepts: financial development theory,financial function theory and financial phase theory.Then,it makes a review of foreign and domestic documents relating to the functions of financial institutions,the relationship between financial development and economic growth,and other aspects.Finally,the concluding remarks and the further research orientation are presented.

Abstract:E-finance is a driving force that is changing the landscape of the finance industry fundamentally, in particular, towards a more competitive industry. E-finance has blurred the boundaries between different financial institutions, enabled new financial products and services, and made existing financial services available in different packages. But we think the influences of e-finance go far beyond this. The developments in e-finance, together with other financial innovations, are constantly bringing new challenges to finance theory and changing people's understanding of the financial system. In this paper we suggest a new perspective on financial intermediation and markets. We discuss why and how this new framework of analysis may shed light on the understanding of finance in the age of the internet and IT revolution as well as help explain the financial innovations seen in the past few decades. We also examine competition issues and what strategies financial institutions should adopt. 2. A new perspective on financial intermediation We propose a new perspective on financial intermediation in which both traditional intermediaries and financial markets can be examined in a unified approach. The present theory of financial intermediation based on the idea of the perfect market posits the role of intermediaries as one that alleviates market imperfections. Meanwhile, research on market microstructure, which studies closely how markets function and operate, illuminates the market mechanism. We think that the traditional distinction between the intermediaries and markets hampers finance theory in explaining the fast and constantly changing financial system. Financial markets, like all other markets, are created and operated by people and therefore are essentially firms. They are a special type of financial intermediary with higher transparency and efficiency. On the other hand, traditional financial intermediaries, by matching savers and borrowers, are also providing market-making services, though in a more opaque way. Embracing both traditional intermediaries and markets in one framework, this new perspective enables better understanding of the financial system and makes it possible to solve long-time puzzles in finance theory. Instead of patching and modifying a theory that is constantly challenged by new developments, this more integrated and consistent conceptual framework tends to explain well the revolution that is taking place in the finance industry.

Abstract:This paper discusses the evolution of international banking regulation standards in two intersected dimensions: regulatory capital versus economic capital; rule- based regulation versus process- oriented regulation. Just like the old accord incorporated with elements of economic and process- oriented approaches,the new accord still keeps elements of regulatory and rules - based capital regulation. The change in regulatory approach represented by the new accord, however, is substantial and important for it is a change in both of the dimensions.

Abstract:We test the hypothesis that interconnections across financial institutions can be explained by a diversification motive. This idea stems from the empirical evidence of the existence of long-term exposures that cannot be explained by a liquidity motive (maturity or currency mismatch). We model endogenous interconnections of heterogenous financial institutions facing regulatory constraints using a maximization of their expected utility. Both theoretical and simulation-based results are compared to a stylized genuine financial network. The diversification motive appears to plausibly explain interconnections among key players. Using our model, the impact of regulation on interconnections between banks -currently discussed at the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision- is analyzed.

Abstract:Modern theory of financial intermediation persists that financial intermediations have the function of producing information,so they can reduce transaction cost and resolve the problem of information asymmetry.However,in the surrounding of financial innovation,financial intermediations devise a great deal of financial derivation,accumulate a lot of risk,and lead important hindrance on the evaluation of financial stabilization.So financial intermediations tend to hide the information necessary.Information restriction produced by financial intermediations make a large difficulty on the efficient regulation and financial stabilization.One disaster after another,financial regulation authorities have not kept up with the financial innovation and can't control the risk.We insist that strengthening the responsibility of financial intermediations throwing daylight on necessary information,improving the ability of digging data and regulating financial risk are the key factors to prevent financial crisis.

Abstract:<p>Financial regulation and financial innovation tend to show a dynamic game process of 'regulation-innovation-re-regulation-re-innovation'. This paper constructs an evolutionary game model to simulate the above phenomena for analyzing the stable equilibrium strategies between financial institutions and regulation institutions. Previous studies mainly stay in a theoretical perspective; instead, this study uses the financial and macroeconomic data of the U.S. during 1947–2007 to numerically demonstrate the dynamic evolution paths of financial regulation and financial innovation. This study finds that the financial regulation and financial innovation of the U.S. presents a dynamic adjustment process by promoting the development of each other. Both regulatory and innovative strategies should be coordinated in the evolutionary progress in a timely and coordinated reason. This study has great referential value for policy makers to balance regulation and innovation in the financial industry and for avoiding financial crises.</p>

Abstract:In the economic transitional period, the problem in financial transaction between banks and enterprises is a distorting credit relationship.Through analysis on the theory of incomplete contract,asymmetrical information and credit sub-optional game,this paper demonstrates that the harmful choice and moral hazard in financial transaction between bank and enterprise cannot be avoided.Based on such analysis,some countermeasures such as institutional arrangement,improvement of micro economic environment and credit breeding in financial transaction between banks and enterprises are recommended.

Abstract:Since the mid-1980s, the share of household net worth intermediated by US financial institutions has shifted from defined benefit plans to life insurers and defined contribution plans. Life insurers have primarily grown through variable annuities, which are mutual funds with longevity insurance, a potential tax advantage, and minimum return guarantees. The minimum return guarantees change the primary function of life insurers from traditional insurance to financial engineering. Variable annuity insurers are exposed to interest and equity risk mismatch and their stock returns were especially low during the COVID-19 crisis. We consider regulatory changes, such as more detailed financial disclosure and standardized stress tests, to monitor potential risk mismatch and to ensure stability of the insurance sector.

Abstract:<p>To understand the link between financial intermediation activities and the real economy, we build a general equilibrium model in which agency frictions in the financial sector affect the efficiency of capital reallocation across firms and generate aggregate economic fluctuations. We develop a recursive policy iteration approach to fully characterize the nonlinear equilibrium dynamics and the off-steady-state crisis behavior. In our model, adverse shocks to agency frictions exacerbate capital misallocation and manifest themselves as variations in total factor productivity at the aggregate level. Our model endogenously generates countercyclical volatility in the aggregate time series and countercyclical dispersion in the marginal product of capital and asset returns in the cross-section.</p>

Abstract:We start the article from the perspective of exchange,and suppose that people design the currency as a contract which controls over the social resources for saving the transaction costs.The aim of using contract is insuring currency as a kind of efficient medium of exchange which can bring down the exchange costs.The financial system has three main functions:Organizing the social resources for product,adjusting the ratio between consumption & investment and risk management.Basing on the analyses,we establish the model and draw the conclusions:developing countries could improve the market mechanism and the function of financial system,and realize the best proportion of investment and consumption by dint of the market power,which aims at better economic development.

Abstract:Financial intermediation plays a great important part in science and technology innovation. We construct a financial intermediary model to analysis its effect to science and technology innovation. We get data from science and technology district in Peking, Tianjin, Hebei. And we use panel data unit root test and the panel data co-integration to examine the relationship between innovation and the support in the finance in small business enterprise in three districts. Research result shows finance intermediation has relation with technology innovation in different district. We suggest establishing the financial reform area. Encouraging civil capital getting into finance service realm is necessary. We should open folk's investment outlet and improve small tiny business enterprise.
The Evolution of Commercial Finance in Ming-Qing China: 16th to Early-20th Centuries

Abstract:Objective/Context: This article surveys the evolution of commercial finance in Ming-Qing China and responds to the debates about the role of finance in the "Great Divergence" between China and Europe. Methodology: Based on new historical materials, especially commercial documents, we study the evolution of financial organizations at different levels as delineated by Fernand Braudel. We also analyze the long-run trends of commercial interest rates in the Ming-Qing eras based on a novel historical database of interest rates in China. Originality: This article explores capital market developments since the 16th century and their relationship with the state -a topic that has been almost entirely neglected in the existing literature. We also find improvements in market integration in China before the late 19th century when Western financial institutions began to enter China, and the prime commercial interest rate in the capital market was much lower than the dominant accounts in the "Great Divergence" debate. Conclusions: While current comparative studies either emphasize the financial stagnation of Ming-Qing China relative to the West or emphasize its special development through non-market mechanisms, e.g., clans, this article shows that the capital market played a similar key role in the evolution of finance in Ming-Qing China as it did in advanced parts of Europe. Thus, we suggest that the difference in financial development between China and the West lies in the organizational structure of the financial sector and the relationship between finance and the state.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is the identification of the functions of money and characteristic of their evolution through change of the used types of money. Research methods are a brief overview and comparative analysis of economic-theoretical approaches to the definition of the functions of money. A comparative analysis of the classifications of the functions of money, made by physiocracy, classical political economy, Marxist political economy, Austrian school of economic theory, German historical school of economics, neoclassical economic theory, Keynesianism, monetarism, institutionalism, modern monetary theory, is carried out. It is shown that various economic schools have different approaches to the definition of the functions of money. Some scientific schools separate money functions for basic and secondary, but other schools consider that all the functions are equally significant. It is concluded that modern changes in the types of money used lead to the fact that different functions of money (in particular, the functions of medium of exchange, measure of value, reserve of value, means of payment) are most effectively implemented by different types of money. Scientific novelty consists in the reconstruction and comparison of lists of functions of money identified by the most important schools of economic theory. The conclusions of the research can be used in scientific and pedagogical activities in the study of the essence and functions of money.
