Abstract:This paper studies the practical requirement of the enterprise on concurrent engineering, proposes architecture of concurrent engineering of railway rolling stock. Then, from the views of management, engineering and supporting sub-systems the paper expounds the enabling technologies of concurrent product design and their applications. Management sub-system contains three functional modules: modeling and improvement of product development process, workflow management and product data management. Engineering design sub-system consists of digital product modeling, stamping and cast moulds design system, CAD/CAPP information integration, Cost Estimation and CAE. Supporting Environment Sub-system comprises Product Data Management and Network sub-systems. Because the technologies are used, concurrent product design is realized, the cycle of product development is shortened, product quality is improved and the cost of product development is also reduced.

Abstract:Concurrent Engineering (CE) is an effective way for enterprises to reengineer the product development processes and to improve the product develop ment abilities. In this paper, the existing status of product development in Chi nese manufacturing industry is analyzed, and the requirements of manufacturing t echnology for them are investigated. An overview of our CE R&D work is introduce d , including product modeling, DFA, DFM, QFD, PDM, and other enabling techn ologies. A case study of the CE pilot project is discussed. The industrial imple mentation and application in Chinese enterprises are summarized.

Abstract:This paper presents an optimization scheduling approach for concurrent design projects, in which activities may be executed in more than one operating mode and renewable as well as nonrenewable resources exist. Research on the development of a scheduling approach for concurrent scheduling is expected to shorten development lead time, minimize cost, and eliminate unnecessary redesign periods. In this paper, an integrated criterion function is proposed to ensure optimal concurrent scheduling and effective utilization of resources along with fluent delivery of information. In the criterion function, some key factors such as time order, resources, lead time and overlapping time of activities, which can make concurrent activities execute successfully, are taken into account adequately. Besides, two cruxes in concurrent engineering-role allocation, prerelease, and feedback revision process are discussed in detail. The example is part of a certain product development process, and the scheduling results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is feasible

Abstract:Abstract The ‘concurrent engineering’ approach has radically changed the ways that new products are developed in many firms. However, implementing concurrent engineering has not always proved easy. As the popularity of concurrent engineering has grown and its applications have become more diverse, the core concepts that define concurrent engineering have become more and more vague. In addition, managers have found that different project, company, and industry contexts often necessitate customized approaches to concurrent engineering. This tutorial clarifies the concepts and methods that are central to the concurrent engineering approach. In addition, it examines the need to tailor the elements of concurrent engineering to match specific program priorities and product characteristics. Finally, the tutorial suggests ways that managers can make early concurrent engineering attempts more successful.

Abstract:Control vector parameterization (CVP) is an important approach of the engineering optimization for the industrial dynamic processes. However, its major defect, the low optimization efficiency caused by calculating the relevant differential equations in the generated nonlinear programming (NLP) problem repeatedly, limits its wide application in the engineering optimization for the industrial dynamic processes. A novel highly effective control parameterization approach, fast-CVP, is first proposed to improve the optimization efficiency for industrial dynamic processes, where the costate gradient formulae is employed and a fast approximate scheme is presented to solve the differential equations in dynamic process simulation. Three well-known engineering optimization benchmark problems of the industrial dynamic processes are demonstrated as illustration. The research results show that the proposed fast approach achieves a fine performance that at least 90% of the computation time can be saved in contrast to the traditional CVP method, which reveals the effectiveness of the proposed fast engineering optimization approach for the industrial dynamic processes.

Abstract:Based on the study of state-of-art and detailed analysis ofcomplex technical product, a life-cycle cost information model is established and a Computer Aided Cost Engineering System(CACES) for evaluating the cost elements of a product during its design phase is under development. The relations among its subsystems, namely the cost modeling, cost optimization and cost analyzing are explored and the key techniques of CACES, such as expert system and knowledge engineering are discussed. Case study of hydraulic excavator shows that the CACES approach is feasible and effective.

Abstract:Based on some case studies of concurrent engineering (CE) implementation in the Chinese manufacturing enterprises, the practice and related problems, such as contradictions between product development teams and functional departments, how to form intelligent superiority, coordination among the multi-projects, cooperation of the suppliers and participation of customers, were analyzed. It is pointed out that the organizational integration for CE must include not only the multi-object integration, but also the integration of the enterprise and its suppliers and customers as well as the traditional cross-functional integration. The practical management method for these new aspects of organizational integration has also been proposed.

Abstract:One of important aims of concurrent engineering (CE) is to accelerate product design process. Efficient methods should be taken to control the design process in order to implement CE successfully. Task assignment should be carried out carefully in order to assign the right tasks to right person in right time. Because of the uncertainty and the dynamic property of design process, a new kind of task assignment method should be found. In this paper, a new method is introduced which includes the methods to choose right tasks, determine the difficulty degree of task and assign task according to the capability of designers. All of these methods can meet the needs of CE.

Abstract:To solve the bottleneck problem in design and preparation of the fixture in product development, the architecture for computer aided fixture design system based on the environment of concurrent product development (CE-CAFD) was presented. The integrated development platform for the fixture design was proposed, which includes knowledge base for preliminary design, algorithm base for fixture design and management base for fixture resource, and the information transmission modes between them. The expert system of fixture scheme design based on example reasoning was adopted and the judgement and optimization were conducted by optimized fuzzy method.

Abstract:Considering the diversity of methods and tools offered to concurrent engineering, the aspects playing important roles in the concurrent engineering context have been pinpointed as being four core elements which are Activity, Method, Object and Information. Based on these four elements, a reference framework called AMOI is proposed to be the guideline for the systematic concurrent product design. Using the AMOI reference framework, concurrent product development system can be structured into four function models (including the activity model, method model, object model and information model) which are interconnected with each other.

Abstract:Based on Product Data Management (PDM) system, this paper builds a CE architecture to support product concurrent design. Having analyzed the all design activities, it proposes the digital information model of product oriented whole life cycle and an integration mode between CAx systems based STEP. It defines a IPT (Integrated Product Team) matrix organization mode for concurrent design, which supporting the reengineering of IPT. Also, it discusses an information sharing mode and integrates all CAx/DFx tools which are distributed on various operator systems and hardware platforms. Finally, it builds an concurrent product development process model supporting the design micro-circle and prerelease. In addition, it researches the process control and management technology of concurrent product development.

Abstract:The most common problems in the construction of nuclear power plants are inefficient communications and ineffective coordination among participants, which result in many design modifications, installation rebuilding, and delays which all increase costs. This paper describes the application of concurrent engineering methodology to the design and construction of nuclear power plants. A concurrent design and construction model was developed for nuclear power plants and the concurrent design framework was analyzed in detail. Five aspects of the model were the support environment, the overall knowledge base, the integrated design and construction technology and tools, the design process, and the organization mode. The concurrent design and construction model for nuclear power plants can improve engineering quality, shorten construction lead times and reduce construction costs. 

Abstract:Component technology has rapidly expanded and become the dominating development technology in industrial automation. But the adoption of component-based control system engineering (CBCSE) is significantly slower due to the lack of appropriate methodologies. To address this problem, the IEC61499 Function Block (FB) standard is exploited. Based on a specific view on component technology as well as CBCSE, the component model and framework in the context of IEC61499 are identified. By integrating new technologies in software engineering with IEC61499, an innovative engineering methodology for CBCSE is proposed. The FB construct is employed as the main building component for modern industrial control system. Illustration is presented of a typical experimental system using the proposed engineering methodology, which promises to improve reusability, modularity, scalability and maintainability in automation systems, while supporting control engineering in a cost- and time effective manner.

Abstract:Virtual Enterprises (VE) and Concurrent Engineering (CE) are two key technologies in product development. Many related technologies supporting VE and CE have been developed. It is also an important problem that how to apply CE technology in VE and this paper will do some research on it. First, the paper analyzes the characters of concurrent development in VE. In fact they are also the requirements. Next several important enabling technologies are introduced, which could improve development system's agility remarkably. Based on these technologies, authors give an integrated schema of concurrent development in VE. The structure of the schema is illustrated and the function of all the servers in schema is discussed in detail. Finally, the prototype which authors are developing is introduced. Based on the result of prototype developing at present, it seems that the schema is of much value and it could be a useful reference for further research.
