Abstract:We report the magnetization, electrical resistivity, specific heat measurements and band structure calculations of layered superconductor SnTaS$_2$. The experiments are performed on single crystals grown by chemical vapor transport method. The resistivity and magnetic susceptibility indicate that SnTaS$_2$ is a type-II superconductor with transition temperature $T_c = 3$ K. The upper critical field ($H_{c2}$) shows large anisotropy for magnetic field parallel to $ab$ plane ($H//ab$) and $c$ axis ($H//c$), and the temperature dependence of $H_{c2}$ for $H//ab$ shows obvious unconventional upward feature at low temperature. Band structure of SnTaS$_2$ shows several band crossings near the Fermi level, which form three nodal lines in the k$_z$ = 0 plane resulting in drumhead-like surface states when spin-orbit coupling is not considered. These results indicate that SnTaS$_2$ is a superconductor with possible topological nodal line semimetal character.
Anisotropic Superconductivity in the Topological Crystalline Metal Pb1/3TaS2 with Multiple Dirac Fermions

Abstract:Topological crystalline metals and semimetals (TCMs) have stimulated great research interest, which broadens the classification of topological phases and provides a valuable platform to explore topological superconductivity. Here, we report the discovery of superconductivity and topological features in Pb-intercalated transition-metal dichalcogenide Pb1/3TaS2. Systematic measurements indicate that Pb1/3TaS2 is a quasi-two-dimensional (q-2D) type-II superconductor (T-c approximate to 2.8 K) with a significantly enhanced anisotropy of upper critical field (gamma H-c2 = H-c2(ab) / H-c2(c) approximate to 17). In addition, first-principles calculations reveal that Pb1/3TaS2 hosts multiple topological Dirac fermions in the electronic band structure. We discover four groups of Dirac nodal lines on the k(z) = pi plane and two sets of Dirac points on the rotation or screw axes, which are protected by crystalline symmetries and robust against spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Dirac-cone-like surface states emerge on the (001) surface because of band inversion. Our work shows that the TCM candidate Pb1/3TaS2 is a promising arena to study the interplay between superconductivity and topological Dirac fermions.

Abstract:Topological crystalline insulators (TCIs) have attracted worldwide interest since their theoretical predication and have created exciting opportunities for studying topological quantum physics and for exploring spintronic applications. In this work, we successfully synthesize PbTe nanowires via the chemical vapor deposition method and demonstrate the existence of topological surface states by their 2D weak anti-localization effect and Shubnikov–de Haas oscillations. More importantly, the surface state contributes ∼61% of the total conduction, suggesting dominant surface transport in PbTe nanowires at low temperatures. Our work provides an experimental groundwork for researching TCIs and is a step forward for the applications of PbTe nanowires in spintronic devices.

Abstract:We perform systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopic measurements on the lead tin telluride Pb1-xSnxTe pseudobinary alloy system. We show that the (001) crystalline surface, which is a crystalline surface symmetric about the (110) mirror planes of the Pb1-xSnxTe crystal, pos- sesses four metallic surface states within its surface Brillouin zone. Our systematic Fermi surface and band topology measurements show that the observed Dirac-like surface states lie on the symmetric momentum-space cuts. We further show that upon going to higher electron binding energies, the surface states' isoenergetic countours in close vicinity of each X point are observed to hybridize with each other, leading to a Fermi surface fractionalization and the Lifshitz transition. In addition, systematic incident photon energy dependent measurements are performed, which enable us to un- ambiguously identify the surface states from the bulk bands. These systematic measurements of the surface and bulk electronic structure on Pb1-xSnxTe, supported by our first principles calculation results, for the first time, show that the Pb1-xSnxTe system belongs to the topological crystalline insulator phase due to the four band inversions at the L points in its Brillouin zone, which has been recently theoretically predicted.

Abstract:Topological materials boast exotic metallic surface states with linear dispersion and spin‐momentum locking, which makes them potential candidates for dissipationless electronic and spintronic devices. Here, it is theoretically predicted that intrinsic Te antisite defects (TePb) in the narrow‐gap semiconductor PbTe induce a band inversion, turning it into a topological crystalline insulator (TCI). To experimentally verify the exotic properties, TePb antisites are introduced into PbTe crystals via nonstoichiometric growth by molecular beam epitaxy. Semimetallic resistivity and distinct quantum oscillations are observed on the TePb doped PbTe. Most importantly, a π Berry phase is unambiguously revealed by a Landau index analysis, demonstrating the Dirac fermion nature of the topological surface states. The discovered TCI nature in TePb doped PbTe is further explored using magneto‐transport measurements under external pressure, and the theoretical calculations of band structures with applying pressure indicate a pressure‐induced Lifshitz transition. Besides, it is proposed that the contribution of bulk states to transport can be reduced by enlarging the inverted gap with strain.

Abstract:Coexistence of topological bands and charge density wave (CDW) in topological materials has attracted immense attentions because of their fantastic properties, such as axionic-CDW, three-dimensional quantum Hall effect, etc. In this work, a nodal-line semimetal InxTaS2 characterized by CDW and superconductivity is successfully synthesized, whose structure and topological bands (two separated Wely rings) are similar to In0.58TaSe2. A 2 x 2 commensurate CDW is observed at low temperature in InxTaS2, identified by transport properties and STM measurements. Moreover, superconductivity emerges below 0.69 K, and the anisotropy ratio of upper critical field [Gamma = H||ab c2(0)=H||c c2(0)] is significantly enhanced compared to 2H-TaS2, which shares the same essential layer unit. According to the Lawrence-Doniach model, the enhanced Gamma may be explained by the reduced effective mass in kx-ky plane, where Weyl rings locate. Therefore, this type of layered topological systems may offer a platform to investigate highly anisotropic superconductivity and to understand the extremely large upper critical field in the bulk or in the two-dimensional limit.

Abstract:In a typical three-dimensional metal, the low-energy excitations are found on a two-dimensional closed Fermi surface in momentum space. Topological semimetals, by contrast, can support onedimensional Fermi lines or zero-dimensional Fermi-Weyl points, at locations in momentum space, where the valence and conduction bands touch. While the degeneracy points in Weyl semimetals are protected against any perturbation that preserves translational symmetry, nodal lines are topologically protected by symmetries such as mirror reflection. Here we report on the existence of topological nodal-line states in the non-centrosymmetric compound single-crystalline PbTaSe2 with strong spin-orbit coupling. Remarkably, the spin-orbit nodal lines in PbTaSe2 are not only protected by the reflection symmetry but also characterized by an integer topological invariant as we show here. Our detailed angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) measurements, first-principles simulations and theoretical analysis illustrate the physical mechanism underlying the formation of the topological nodal-line states (TNLS, in contrast to Weyl Semimetals) and associated surface states for the first time. Therefore, this work paves the way towards exploring the exotic properties of the topological nodal-line fermions in condensed matter systems and, potentially, the rich physics arising from the interplay between the topological nodal-line states and the emergent superconductivity we report in the single crystal phase of this compound.

Abstract:Alloying indium into the topological insulator Sn1-xInxBi2Te4 induces bulk superconductivity with critical temperatures Tc up to 1.85 K and upper critical fields up to about 14 kOe. This is confirmed by electrical resistivity, heat capacity, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The heat capacity shows a discontinuity at Tc and temperature dependence below Tc consistent with weak coupling BCS theory, and suggests a superconducting gap near 0.25 meV. The superconductivity is type-II and the topological surface states have been verified by photoemission. A simple picture suggests analogies with the isostructural magnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4, in which a natural heterostructure hosts complementary properties on different sublattices, and motivates new interest in this large family of compounds. The existence of both topological surface states and superconductivity in Sn1-xInxBi2Te4 identifies these materials as promising candidates for the study of topological superconductivity.

Abstract:Topological crystalline insulators are new states of matter in which the topological nature of electronic structures arises from crystal symmetries. Here we predict the first material realization of topological crystalline insulator in the semiconductor SnTe, by identifying its nonzero topological index. We predict that as a manifestation of this nontrivial topology, SnTe has metallic surface states with an even number of Dirac cones on high-symmetry crystal surfaces such as {001}, {110} and {111}. These surface states form a new type of high-mobility chiral electron gas, which is robust against disorder and topologically protected by reflection symmetry of the crystal with respect to {110} mirror plane. Breaking this mirror symmetry via elastic strain engineering or applying an in-plane magnetic field can open up a continuously tunable band gap on the surface, which may lead to wide-ranging applications in thermoelectrics, infrared detection, and tunable electronics. Closely related semiconductors PbTe and PbSe also become topological crystalline insulators after band inversion by pressure, strain and alloying.

Exotic Superconducting Properties in Topological Nodal Semimetal PbTaSe$_2$

Abstract:We report the electronic properties of superconductivity in the topological nodal-line semimetal PbTaSe . Angle-resolved photoemission measurements accompanied by band calculations confirmed the nodal-line band structure in the normal state of single crystalline PbTaSe . Resistivity, magnetic-susceptibility and specific heat measurements have also been performed on high-quality single crystals. We observed upward features and large anisotropy in upper critical field () measured in-plane (H//\textbf {ab}) and out-plane (H//\textbf {c}), respectively. Especially, measured in H//\textbf {ab} shows sudden upward features rather than a signal of saturation in ultralow temperatures. The specific heat measurements under magnetic field reveal a full superconducting gap with no gapless nodes. These behaviors in this clean noncentrosymmetric superconductor is possibly related to the underlying exotic physics, providing important clue for realization of topological superconductivity.

Abstract:Superconductivity in topological insulators is expected to show very unconventional features such as $p+ip$ order parameter, Majorana fermions etc. However, the intrinsic superconductivity has been observed in a very limited number of materials in which the pairing symmetry is still a matter of debate. Here, we study the topological crystalline insulator (Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$)$_{1-y}$In$_y$Te, where a peculiar insulator to superconductor transition was previously reported near the gap inversion transition, when the system is nearly a 3-dimensional Dirac semimetal. Both the existence of superconductivity near the 3-dimensional Dirac semimetal and the occurrence of insulator to superconductor transition in an isotropic material is highly unusual. We suggest that the observed phenomena are related to an intrinsic instability of a 3-dimensional Dirac semimetal state in (Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$)$_{1-y}$In$_y$Te and "flattening" of the bulk valence and conduction bands as they acquire a Mexican hat-like dispersion on the inverted side of the phase diagram. This favors the pairing instability if the chemical potential is pinned to these flat regions.

Abstract:We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of the strongly spin-orbit coupled low-carrier density superconductor Sn1-xInxTe (x = 0.045) to elucidate the electronic states relevant to the possible occurrence of topological superconductivity recently reported for this compound from point-contact spectroscopy. The obtained energy-band structure reveals a small holelike Fermi surface centered at the L point of the bulk Brillouin zone, together with a signature of a topological surface state which indicates that this superconductor is essentially a doped topological crystalline insulator characterized by band inversion and mirror symmetry. A comparison of the electronic states with a band-non-inverted superconductor possessing a similar Fermi surface structure, Pb1-xTlxTe, suggests that the anomalous behavior in the superconducting state of Sn1-xInxTe is likely to be related to the peculiar orbital characteristics of the bulk valence band and/or the presence of a topological surface state.
Topological Surface States and Superconductivity in [Tl_4](tl_1-Xsn_x)te_3 Perovskites

Abstract:Materials with strong spin-orbit coupling have attracted attention following the prediction and subsequent discovery of strong two- and three-dimensional topological insulators in which a topological property of the bulk band structure of an insulator results in metallic surface states with Dirac-like dispersion. Here we report the discovery of Dirac-like surface states in the perovskite superconductor [Tl_4]TlTe_3 (Tl5Te3) and its non-superconducting tin-doped derivative, [Tl4](Tl_0.4Sn_0.6)Te_3, as observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations predict a single spin-orbit driven band parity inversion at the Z point above the Fermi level of Tl5Te3, suggesting the surface states are protected by Z_2 topology. Calculations on [Tl_4]SnTe_3 show no parity inversions, implying that a topological transition from non-trivial to trivial must occur upon doping with tin, i.e., [Tl_4](Tl_1-xSn_x)Te_3. Thus [Tl_4]MTe_3 perovskites are a possible new, non-trigonal class of Z_2 topological compounds. Additionally, as Tl5Te3 is a stoichiometric bulk superconductor, these perovskites are ideal materials in which to study the interplay between surface states and bulk superconductivity.

Abstract:The surface of a topological crystalline insulator (TCI) carries an even number of Dirac cones protected by crystalline symmetry. We epitaxially grew high-quality Pb(1-x)Sn(x)Te(111) films and investigated the TCI phase by in situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Pb(1-x)Sn(x)Te(111) films undergo a topological phase transition from a trivial insulator to TCI via increasing the Sn/Pb ratio, accompanied by a crossover from n-type to p-type doping. In addition, a hybridization gap is opened in the surface states when the thickness of the film is reduced to the two-dimensional limit. The work demonstrates an approach to manipulating the topological properties of TCI, which is of importance for future fundamental research and applications based on TCI.

Abstract:Despite lots of research activities on topological materials, a highly tunable system is yet to be realized as a material platform for exploration of versatile magneto-/opto-/thermoelectronic properties. The authors followed an important scheme for topological phase transitions proposed by S. Murakami et al. and could find a highly tunable topological system based on PbTe-SnTe alloy doped with In. By varying parameters, Pb/Sn ratio and In doping, they can tune the system from trivial to topological-crystalline insulators across a finite range of materials, where the system shows polar distortion and topological semi-metal behaviors with low-carrier density, high mobility and anomalous (in-plane as well as out-of-plane field) Hall effects. Abstract:Topological superconductors have attracted tremendous excitement as they are predicted to host Majorana zero modes that can be utilized for topological quantum computing. Candidate topological superconductor Sn1-xInxTe thin films (0<x<0.3) grown by molecular beam epitaxy and strained in the (111) plane are shown to host three coexisting quantum effects: localization, antilocalization and superconducting fluctuations above the critical temperature Tc. An analysis of the normal state magnetoresistance reveals these effects. Weak localization is consistently observed in superconducting samples, indicating that superconductivity originates dominantly from trivial valence band states that may be strongly spin-orbit split. A large enhancement of the conductivity is observed above Tc, indicating that quantum coherent quasiparticle effects coexist with superconducting fluctuations. Our results motivate a re-examination of the debated pairing symmetry of this material when subjected to quantum confinement and lattice strain.

Abstract:Topological semimetals can support one-dimensional Fermi lines or zero-dimensional Weyl points in momentum space, where the valence and conduction bands touch. Abstract:Topological semimetals can support one-dimensional Fermi lines or zero-dimensional Weyl points in momentum space, where the valence and conduction bands touch. While the degeneracy points in Weyl semimetals are robust against any perturbation that preserves translational symmetry, nodal lines require protection by additional crystalline symmetries such as mirror reflection. Here we report, based on a systematic theoretical study and a detailed experimental characterization, the existence of topological nodal-line states in the non-centrosymmetric compound PbTaSe 2 with strong spin-orbit coupling. Remarkably, the spin-orbit nodal lines in PbTaSe 2 are not only protected by the reflection symmetry but also characterized by an integer topological invariant. Our detailed angle-resolved photoemission measurements, first-principles simulations and theoretical topological analysis illustrate the physical mechanism underlying the formation of the topological nodal-line states and associated surface states for the first time, thus paving the way towards exploring the exotic properties of the topological nodal-line fermions in condensed matter systems.

Abstract:The quantum spin Hall (QSH) effect is widely studied as a novel quantum state in condensed matter physics over the past decade. Recently, it is predicted that the transition metal pentatelluride XTe5 (X = Zr, Hf) has a large bandgap in its bulk form and a single layer of XTe5 is a QSH insulator candidate. However, the topological nature of the bulk material is still under debate because it is located close to the phase boundary of a strong topological insulator and a weak topological insulator (WTI). Here, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM)/scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we systematically studied the electronic structures of bulk HfTe5. Both the large bulk bandgaps and conductive edge states in the vicinity of the step edges in HfTe5 were observed, strongly suggesting a WTI phase in bulk HfTe5. Moreover, our STM experiment for the first time reveals the bulk band bending due to the broken symmetry near the step edge, making it an ideal platform for studying the development of edge states in the WTI and QSH insulator.
