Abstract:Two new dibenzocyclooctane lignans, kadsurindutins A (1) and B (2), were isolated from the stems of Kadsura induta, together with the known, structurally related lignans schisantherin L (3), schisantherin P (4), kadsulignan L (5), and neokadsuranin (6). Their structures and configurations were elucidated by spectroscopic methods (UV, ORD, CD, IR, 1D- and 2D-NMR) in combination with mass-spectrometric (HR-MS) techniques. Compounds 1, 5, and 6 showed in vitro antiviral effects on hepatitis B virus.

Abstract:Five new dibenzocyclooctane lignans, schisanwilsonins K-O (1-5), together with eighteen known lignans (6-23) were isolated from the stems of Schisandra wilsoniana. The structures of these new compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic methods, including 2D-NMR techniques. Several compounds were found to show anti-HIV and anti-HBV activity.

Abstract:Six new lignans (1-6), as well as five known ones (7-11) were isolated from the leaves and stems of Schisandra chinensis. The structures of 1-6 were established on the basis of spectroscopic methods including 1D-and 2D-NMR techniques and CD experiments. Compound 1 was the first example of naturally occurring N-containing lignans featuring a nicotinoyl group. All the new compounds were evaluated for their anti-HIV-1 activities and showed EC50 values in the range 17.89-138.23 mu g/mL.

Abstract:Kadsufolins A-D (1-4, resp.), four new dibenzocyclooctane-type lignans, were isolated from the roots and stems of Kadsura oblongifolia, together with eleven known lignans. Their structures and configurations were elucidated by spectroscopic methods including 2D-NMR techniques. The compounds were also evaluated for cytotoxic activity against human tumor cell lines A549 (lung carcinoma), DU145 (prostate carcinoma), KB (epidermoid carcinoma of the nasopharynx), and HCT-8 (ileocecal carcinoma). Kadsufolin A (1), kadsufolin D (4), angeloylbinankadsurin A, and heteroclitin B were found to show cytotoxic activities against A549, DU145, KB and HCT-8 with GI(50) values of 5.1 - 20.0 mu g/ml.

Abstract:From the stems of Kadsura heteroclita, two new lignans named heteroclitins F and G were isolated and their structures were determined by various spectroscopic means including an X-ray diffraction method. Dibenzocyclooctadiene type lignans and related compounds isolated from the stems of K. heteroclita, potently inhibited the lipid peroxidation in the rat liver homogenate stimulated by Fe(2+)-ascorbic acid, CCl4-reduced form of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) and adenosine 5'-diphosphate-NADPH.

Abstract:Eleven new dibenzocyclooctadiene lignans, polysperlignans A-K (1-11), and eight known analogues (12-19) were isolated from the stems of Kadsura polysperma. Their structures and absolute configurations were established using a combination of MS, NMR, CD, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. Selected compounds were evaluated for activity against β-amyloid- or hydrogen peroxide-induced neurotoxicity on PC12 cells, and 1, 2, 4, 5, 13, and 16 showed statistically significant neuroprotective effects in these in vitro assays.

Abstract:AIM: To study the dibenzocylooctadiene lignans from the stems of Kadsura heteroclita.METHOD: Chromatographic separations of silica gel and semi-preparative HPLC were used. All of the structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic analysis,including 2D-NMR and HR-MS techniques.RESULTS: Four dibenzocylooctadiene lignans were isolated from K heteroclita. Their structures were identified as heteroclitin R (1), heteroclitin S (2), gonisin O (3), and schisanlignone A (4).CONCLUSION: Heteroclitin R (1) and heteroclitin S (2) are new natural lignans.

Abstract:Two new lignans, named as 6-hydroxyhinokinin and 6-hydroxyhinokinin-6- O-β-D-glucopyranoside, together with five known compounds: elemol, oplodiol, catechin, β-sitosterol and daucosterol were isolated from Kadsura heteroclita. The structures of these compounds were characterized by extensive 1D and 2D NMR spectral experiments, chemical analysis and comparison with literature data. The absolute structures of the novel lignans were elucidated as 8 S, 8′ S, based on their optical rotations.

Abstract:Lignans are widely produced by various plant species; they are a class of natural products that share structural similarity. They usually contain a core scaffold that is formed by two or more phenylpropanoid units. Lignans possess diverse pharmacological properties, including their antiviral activities that have been reported in recent years. This review discusses the distribution of lignans in nature according to their structural classification, and it provides a comprehensive summary of their antiviral activities. Among them, two types of antiviral lignans—podophyllotoxin and bicyclol, which are used to treat venereal warts and chronic hepatitis B (CHB) in clinical, serve as examples of using lignans for antivirals—are discussed in some detail. Prospects of lignans in antiviral drug discovery are also discussed.

Abstract:Chemical investigation into the stems of the medicinal plantSchisandra sphaerandraled to the isolation and identification of a new dibenzocyclooctadiene lignan sphaerandrin A (1) and 11 known ones gomisin B (2), schirubrisin B (3), kadsuphilin B (4), schizandrin (5), benzoylgomisin Q (6), angeloylgomisin Q (7), gomisin G (8), schisanwilsonin O (9), isogomisin O (10), schisantherin D (11), and wuweizisu C (12). The structure of the new compound was elucidated by comprehensive spectroscopic methods including 1 D/2D NMR, HRESIMS, and CD spectrometry. To the best of our knowledge, compounds2 - 11were obtained from this species for the first time. All the compounds were evaluated for the cytotoxic activity against the triple-negative breast cancer cell lines MDA-MB-231 and HCC-1937.

Abstract:Two previously undescribed dibenzocyclooctadiene lignans, named sieverlignans D–E (1-2), as well as eight known ones (3-10), were isolated from the aerial parts of Artemisia sieversiana. Their structures were elucidated from extensive spectroscopic analysis, including HRMS, NMR and circular dichroism experiments. This study is the first to report dibenzocyclooctadiene lignans in the genus Artemisia and this plant. All the compounds were evaluated for their anti-neuroinflammatory effects on the lipopolysaccharides (LPS)-induced nitric oxide production in BV-2 murine microglial cells. Compounds 1 and 6 exhibited the moderate activity with their IC50 values of 47.7 and 21.9 μM, compared to a positive control quercetin with the IC50 value of 16.0 μM.
