Abstract:Multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/CdS core/shell heterostructures have been successfully synthesized via a simple solution-phase method. The thickness of CdS shells can be facilely tuned by either the reaction temperature or time. The CdS nanoparticles are first formed directly on the surface of MWCNT, and then a uniform CdS sheath is yielded via orientated aggregation processes. The present work provides a simple route to obtain MWCNT-based core/shell heterostructures and thus is of wide interest for the studies of nanomaterials and nanodevices.

Abstract:Carbon-encapsulated Fe nanoparticles have been successfully synthesized by a two-step procedure method of hydrothermal and subsequent thermal reduction process. The introduction of hydrogen atmosphere helps to obtain pure α-Fe phase and the lower annealing temperature (at 550°C). The morphological characterization indicates that the nanoparticle presents a quasi-spherical shaped, core–shell structure with diameter ranged from 10 to 20nm and a carbon shell of about 4nm. The results of X-ray diffraction and Raman spectrum demonstrate that carbon in the as-synthesized product is in amorphous phase. Magnetic measurements reveal the ferromagnetic behavior of the product.

Abstract:We have developed a versatile approach for preparing core/shell structured noble metal (alloy)/cadmium selenide nanocrystals with different shell thicknesses. Cd was bound to the core in the presence of reagents capable of reacting with the carboxyl of fatty acids of cadmium precursors. Subsequent adding of Se precursor led to the formation of core/shell structures.

Abstract:The water-soluble CdSe/ZnS core-shell nanoparticles have been synthesized by using L-cysteine hydrochloride as stabilizer. The optical properties of CdSe nanoclusters and the influence of ZnS shell on the CdSe core were studied by UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. A remarkable emission enhancement with a factor of 3.5 for CdSe/ZnS core-shell nanoparticles in the intensity was observed compared to the CdSe nanoparticles. The maximum emission wavelength of CdSe/ZnS nanoparticles had a slight redshift. The absorption spectrum of CdSe/ZnS core-shell structure showed a small redshift as compared to the CdSe core. TEM, ED and XPS were used to characterize the size, shape and composition of CdSe/ZnS nanoclusters. Results of FT-IR show that sulfur and oxygen atoms in L-cysteine molecules took part in coordination with metal ions on the surface of the nanoparticles. There also existed amino-group on the surface of the core-shell nanoparticles. The above results demonstrate that the CdSe/ZnS nanoparticles are with a high degree of size-distribution and monodispersity in addition to the superior chemical stability and good optical characteristics.

Abstract:Core-shell semiconductor quantum dots materials are being investigated due to their special performance in repairing surface defects for the single quantum dots and greatly improving the optical performance of quantum dots. Instead of a traditional small flask as a reaction vessel to prepare NaHTe, the preparation of the CdTe core using a three-necked flask was achieved. 10 CdTe/CdS and CdTe/ZnS core-shell semiconductor quantum dots with different core sizes, shell thicknesses and shell materials were synthesized. The UV–visible absorption and fluorescence spectrum of 10 kinds of core-shell semiconductor quantum dots materials were measured and analyzed. The absorption spectrum of quantum dots in the UV-visible band shows that with the increase of quantum dots size, the absorption peak is red-shifted. The CdTe/CdS quantum dots differ in fluorescence lifetime and intensity due to the conversion of different core and shell sizes of quantum dots between types I and II. When the shell thickness of CdTe/ZnS increases, the shell thickness of ZnS reduces the number of dangling bonds and defect states on the core surface, which increases the probability of electron-hole pairs recombination and causes the fluorescence peak red-shift.

Abstract:This paper introduced a two-step method for the synthesis of core/shell type nano-composites, which exhibited superior properties over single material, like photoactivity. The core material, cadium sulfide were prepared via a hydrothermal method, using PVP as surfactant to avoid severe aggregation. We obtained high crystalline nanocrystals with dimensions varied from 10 nm to 12 nm, and the nano-particles cohered together to form clusters. We applied a sonochemical route to improve the dispersion properties during the process of hydrolysation of Ti(OC4H9)(4) which coated core material with a layer of stable TiO2. By adjusting molar ratio of precursors, morphopology of CdS/TiO2 transferred from CdS embedded in continuous TiO2 matrix to products with obvious core/shell structure, which validated the unique effects of sonochemical method in the synthesis of nano-materials. And from the absorbance spectra of degraded methyl orange, the nanocomposites showed superior photoactivity over single material due to better separation of opposite carriers.

Abstract:Amorphous TiO2 layers with a controllable thickness from 3.5 to 40 nm were coated on the one-dimensional CdS nanorods surface under mild conditions. Compared to the bare CdS nanorods, the as-prepared CdS@TiO2 nanorods exhibit enhanced photocatalytic activities for phenol photodecomposition under visible light irradiation. The improved photoactivity is ascribed to the efficient separation of photogenerated electron and hole charge carriers between CdS cores and TiO2 shells. This study promises a simple approach to fabricating CdS@TiO2 core-shell structure nanocomposites, and can be applied for other semiconductor cores with TiO2 shells. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Engineering the structure of core-shell colloidal semiconductor nanoparticles (CSNPs) is attractive due to the potential to enhance photo-induced charge transfer and induce favorable optical and electronic properties. Nonetheless, the sensitivity of telluride CSNPs to high temperatures makes it challenging to precisely modulate their surface crystallinity. Herein, we have developed an efficient strategy for synthesizing telluride CSNPs with thin amorphous shells using aqueous cation exchange (ACE). By changing the synthesis temperature in the range of 40-110 °C, the crystallinity of the CdTe nanoparticles was controllable from perfect crystals with no detectable amorphous shell (c-CdTe) to a core-shell structure with a crystalline CdTe NP core covered by an amorphous shell of tunable thickness up to 7-8 nm (c@a-CdTe). A second ACE step transformed c@a-CdTe to crystalline CdTe@HgTe core-shell NPs. The c@a-CdTe nanoparticles synthesized at 60 °C and having a 4-5 nm thick amorphous shell exhibited the highest surface-enhanced Raman scattering activity with a high enhancement factor around 8.82 × 105, attributed to the coupling between the amorphous shell and the crystalline core.

Abstract:Core‐shell Co@Co(OH) 2 nanoparticles are characterised electrochemically with particular focus on the thin shell of cobalt (II) hydroxide which stabilises the metallic cobalt core against further oxidation in the presence of air. Voltammetric characterisation allows insights into the nature of the shell so both complementing and providing information unavailable using electron microscopy and X‐ray diffraction. Moreover, the electrode reactions, occurring at particle ensembles, of the further oxidation of surface Co(OH) 2 to CoOOH under alkaline conditions are further evidenced at the single particle level using electrochemical particle‐electrode impacts (or 'nano‐impacts'). On this basis, the large extent of particle agglomeration/aggregation of Co@Co(OH) 2 nanoparticles while suspended in the solutions is inferred.

Abstract:Type-II Cu2S-CdS core/shell (including Cu2S/CdS and CdS/Cu2S) semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs). which call produce efficient spatial separation of electrons and holes between the core and shell, were Successfully synthesized. The results from absorption spectra, photoluminescence (PL) spectra. X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS). X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and PL lifetime measurements all confirmed the formation of the type-II core/shell NCs. The emission wavelength of the type-II Cu2S/CdS core/shell NCs can be readily tuned between 515 nm and 760 inn through two methods: core size control and shell thickness control. The highest PL quantum yield that the Cu2S/CdS core/shell NCs reached was similar to 12% by controlling the shell thickness, while the core Cu2S nanocrystals had no PL at all. The PL decay data revealed that Cu2S/CdS NCs had a dual exponential characteristic and the PL emission with the longest lifetime (more than 1400 ns) occupied more than 85%. After overcoating ZnS, a Cu2S/CdS/ZnS core/shell1/shell2 structure was formed, which resulted in a blue-shift of the emission wavelength. Using the synthesis strategy of Cu2S/CdS, CdS/Cu2S type-II NCs also produced tunable emissions in the visible range.

Abstract:CdSe nanoclusters overcoated with CdS shell were prepared with macapoacetic acid as stabilizer. The optical properties of CdSe nanoclusters and the influence of CdS shell on the electronic structures of CdSe cores were studied by optical absorption, photoluminescence (PL) and photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectroscopies. Based on PL and PLE results and the theoretical calculation on fine structure of bandedge exciton, a model of formation of excimer within the small clusters was proposed to explain the large Stokes shift of luminescence from absorption edge observed in PL results.

Abstract:Magnetic alloy-C core-shell nanoparticles with tunable elemental components are highly expected for their controllable magnetic, catalytic, and electromagnetic properties, and high air stability. Here we present a simple one-step metal organic chemical vapor deposition for the synthesis of CoNi-C core-shell nanoparticles with tunable Co/Ni molar ratio. The as-synthesized nanoparticles have core sizes of 5 - 50 nm, shell thicknesses of ∼ 5 nm, and tunable Co/Ni molar ratio determined by the molar ratio of Co(acac)3/Ni(acac)2 used in the precursor. The core-shell nanoparticles are very stable in ambient atmosphere at the temperature below 200 oC, and exhibit a slight oxidation in the temperature range of 200 to 400 oC. The core-shell nanoparticles with Co/Ni molar ratios of 1.27:1, 0.64:1, and 0.30:1 exhibit saturation magnetization values of 41, 31, and 24 emu/g, and coercivity values of 483, 346, and 362 Oe, respectively. It is demonstrated that the microwave absorption parameters of the as-synthesized nanoparticles can be tuned by the Co/Ni molar ratio, which provides a practical strategy to regulate the microwave absorption properties of nanostructured absorbers.

Abstract:AbstractCdS and ZnO capped CdS (CdS/ZnO) semiconductor nanoparticles were synthesized via hydrothermal method by thermal decomposition of the cysteine-cadmium and Zn(OH)42− complex precursors. Both of the photoluminescence properties and structure characterization confirmed the core/shell structure as expected. Compared to CdS nanoparticles, the band-gap emission of CdS/ZnO was greatly improved, that means the capping layer of ZnO modified the surface of CdS and reduced the surface defects effectively. ED and XRD confirmed the formation of hexagon phased CdS and the TEM image indicated the size of CdS/ZnO was about 20 nm.
