Abstract:Majorana’s stellar representation provides an intuitive picture in which quantum states in high-dimensional Hilbert space can be observed using the trajectory of Majorana stars. We consider the Majorana’s stellar representation of the quantum geometric tensor for a spin state up to spin-3/2. The real and imaginary parts of the quantum geometric tensor, corresponding to the quantum metric tensor and Berry curvature, are therefore obtained in terms of the Majorana stars. Moreover, we work out the expressions of quantum geometric tensor for arbitrary spin in some important cases. Our results will benefit the comprehension of the quantum geometric tensor and provide interesting relations between the quantum geometric tensor and Majorana’s stars.
Majorana fermions and quantum information with fractional topology and disorder

Abstract:The quest to identify and observe Majorana fermions in physics and condensed-matter systems remains an important challenge. Here, we introduce a qubit (spin-$1/2$) from the occurrence of two delocalized zero-energy Majorana fermions in a model of two spins-$1/2$ on the Bloch sphere within the fractional one-half topological state. We address specific protocols in time with circularly polarized light and the protection of this delocalized spin-$1/2$ state related to quantum information protocols. We also show how disorder can play a positive and important role allowing singlet-triplet transitions and resulting in an additional elongated region for the fractional phase, demonstrating the potential of this platform related to applications in topologically protected quantum information. We generalize our approach with an array and Majorana fermions at the edges in a ring geometry.

Abstract:We present a 3D, topological picture-language for quantum information. Our approach combines charged excitations carried by strings, with topological properties that arise from embedding the strings in the interior of a three-dimensional manifold with boundary. A quon is a composite that acts as a particle. Specifically a quon is a hemisphere containing a neutral pair of open strings with opposite charge. We interpret multi-quons and their transformations in a natural way. We obtain a new type of a string-genus relation, involving both a string and the 3D manifold. We use the joint relation to obtain a topological interpretation of the $C^{*}$ Hopf algebra relations, that are widely used in tensor networks. We obtain a 3D representation of the Controlled NOT or CNOT gate (that is considerably simpler than earlier work) and a 3D topological protocol for teleportation.

Abstract:Majorana stars, the $2S$ spin coherent states that are orthogonal to a spin-$S$ state, offer an elegant method to visualize quantum states, disclosing their intrinsic symmetries. These states are naturally described by the corresponding multipoles. These quantities can be experimentally determined and allow for an SU(2)-invariant analysis. We investigate the relationship between Majorana constellations and state multipoles, thus providing insights into the underlying symmetries of the system. We illustrate our approach with some relevant and informative examples.

Abstract:By describing the evolution of a quantum state with the trajectories of the Majorana stars on a Bloch sphere, Majorana's stellar representation provides an intuitive geometric perspective to comprehend a quantum system with high-dimensional Hilbert space. However, the problem of the representation of a two-spin coupling system on a Bloch sphere has not been solved satisfactorily yet. Here, we present a practical method to resolve the problem for the mixed-spin $(s, 1/2)$ system. The system can be decomposed into two spins: spin-$(s+1/2)$ and spin-$(s-1/2)$ at the coupling bases, which can be regarded as independent spins. Besides, we may write any pure state as a superposition of two orthonormal states with one spin-$(s+1/2)$ state and the other spin-$(s-1/2)$ state. Abstract:By the Majorana representation, for any $d > 1$ there is a one-one correspondence between a quantum state of dimension $d$ and $d-1$ qubits represented as $d-1$ points in the Bloch sphere. Using the theory of symmetry class of tensors, we present a simple scheme for constructing $d-1$ points on the Bloch sphere and the corresponding $d-1$ qubits representing a $d$-dimensional quantum state. Additionally, we demonstrate how the inner product of two $d$-dimensional quantum states can be expressed as a permanent of a matrix related to their $(d-1)$-qubit state representations. Extension of the result to mixed states is also considered.

Abstract:In 1937, Majorana noticed that in a different representation the relativistic wave equation for electrons proposed by Dirac has a solution describing chargeless neutral fermi-ons, which have completely different properties from Dirac fermions. In particle physics, the search for such Majorana fermions is still being pursued, while in condensed matter physics it has already been found that certain kinds of quasiparticles in the low-energy excitations of topological superconductors and fractional quantum Hall effects share a similar behavior to Majorana fermi-ons. In particular, the vortex excitations in two-dimensional topological superconductors include zero-energy Majorana fermion modes, which exhibit non-abelian anyonic statistical properties un-der exchange operations, leading to the possibility of topological quantum computation. In this ar-ticle we will review the physical models and realization of Majorana fermions, and then discuss the corresponding implementation of topological quantum computation.

Abstract:Considering homogeneous four-dimensional space-time geometries within real projective geometry provides a mathematically well-defined framework to discuss their deformations and limits without the appearance of coordinate singularities. On Lie algebra level the related conjugacy limits act isomorphically to concatenations of contractions. We axiomatically introduce projective quantum fields on homogeneous space-time geometries, based on correspondingly generalized unitary transformation behavior and projectivization of the field operators. Projective correlators and their expectation values remain well-defined in all geometry limits, which includes their ultraviolet and infrared limits. They can degenerate with support on space-time boundaries and other lower-dimensional space-time subspaces. We explore fermionic and bosonic superselection sectors as well as the irreducibility of projective quantum fields. Dirac fermions appear, which obey spin-statistics as composite quantum fields. The framework systematically formalizes and generalizes the ambient space techniques regularly employed in conformal field theory.

Geometric Visualizations of Single and Entangled Qubits

Abstract:The Bloch Sphere visualization of the possible states of a single qubit has proved a useful pedagogical and conceptual tool as a one-to-one map between qubit states and points in a 3-D space. However, understanding many important concepts of quantum mechanics, such as entanglement, requires developing intuitions about states with a minimum of two qubits, which map one-to-one to unvisualizable spaces of 6 dimensions and higher. In this paper we circumvent this visualization issue by creating maps of subspaces of 1- and 2-qubit systems that quantitatively and qualitatively encode properties of these states in their geometries. For the 1-qubit case, the subspace approach allows one to visualize how mixed states relate to different choices of measurement in a basis-independent way and how to read off the entries in a density matrix representation of these states from lengths in a simple diagram. For the 2-qubit case, a toroidal map of 2-qubit states illuminates the non-trivial topology of the state space while allowing one to simultaneously read off, in distances and angles, the level of entanglement in the 2-qubit state and the mixed-state properties of its constituent qubits. By encoding states and their evolutions through quantum logic gates with little to no need of mathematical formalism, these maps may prove particularly useful for understanding fundamental concepts of quantum mechanics and quantum information at the introductory level. Abstract:We present an analysis of the Dirac equation when the spin symmetry is changed from SU(2) to the quaternion group, Q8, achieved by multiplying one of the gamma matrices by the imaginary number, i. The reason for doing this is to introduce a bivector into the spin algebra, which complexifies the Dirac field. It then separates into two distinct and complementary spaces: one describing polarization and the other coherence. The former describes a 2D structured spin, and the latter its helicity, generated by a unit quaternion.

VENUS: A Geometrical Representation for Quantum State Visualization

Abstract:Visualizations have played a crucial role in helping quantum computing users explore quantum states in various quantum computing applications. Among them, Bloch Sphere is the widely-used visualization for showing quantum states, which leverages angles to represent quantum amplitudes. However, it cannot support the visualization of quantum entanglement and superposition, the two essential properties of quantum computing. To address this issue, we propose VENUS, a novel visualization for quantum state representation. By explicitly correlating 2D geometric shapes based on the math foundation of quantum computing characteristics, VENUS effectively represents quantum amplitudes of both the single qubit and two qubits for quantum entanglement. Also, we use multiple coordinated semicircles to naturally encode probability distribution, making the quantum superposition intuitive to analyze. We conducted two well-designed case studies and an in-depth expert interview to evaluate the usefulness and effectiveness of VENUS. The result shows that VENUS can effectively facilitate the exploration of quantum states for the single qubit and two qubits.

Anticoherence of spin states with point group symmetries

Abstract:We investigate multiqubit permutation-symmetric states with maximal entropy of entanglement. Such states can be viewed as particular spin states, namely anticoherent spin states. Using the Majorana representation of spin states in terms of points on the unit sphere, we analyze the consequences of a point-group symmetry in their arrangement on the quantum properties of the corresponding state. We focus on the identification of anticoherent states (for which all reduced density matrices in the symmetric subspace are maximally mixed) associated with point-group symmetric sets of points. We provide three different characterizations of anticoherence, and establish a link between point symmetries, anticoherence and classes of states equivalent through stochastic local operations with classical communication (SLOCC). We then investigate in detail the case of small numbers of qubits, and construct infinite families of anticoherent states with point-group symmetry of their Majorana points, showing that anticoherent states do exist to arbitrary order.

Abstract: In this study, we show that quantum walk can describe a Majorana fermion when the coin operator constrained by Lorentz covariance and the initial state satisfies the Majorana condition. The time evolution of a Majorana fermion is demonstrated with the numerical simulations and experimentally runs on a real quantum device provided by IBM Quantum System. To reduce errors due to approximation, we proposed a new efficient way to achieve second order accuracy in the near-term quantum computer without increase the complexity of quantum gate circuitry compared with the first order approximation. We show that rest Majorana fermion (expectation value of momentum is zero) can be well defined and its behavior depends more sensitively on the accuracy of the approximation than a Dirac particle due to the stringent constraints of Majorana condition.
A Geometric Substructure for Quantum Dynamics

Abstract:The description of a closed quantum system is extended with the identification of an underlying substructure in which an expanded formulation of dynamics in the Heisenberg picture is given. Between measurements a ``state point" moves in an underlying multi-dimensional complex, projective space with constant velocity determined by the quantum state vector. Following a measurement, the point changes direction and moves with new constant velocity along one of several possible new orthogonal paths, with probabilities determined by Born's Rule. A possible generalization to a Riemannian substructure is speculated upon, suggesting an unexpected interaction with the background gravitational field.

Abstract:The exceptional point, known as the non-Hermitian degeneracy, has special topological structure, leading to various counterintuitive phenomena and novel applications, which are refreshing our cognition of quantum physics. One particularly intriguing behavior is the mode switch phenomenon induced by dynamically encircling an exceptional point in the parameter space. While these mode switches have been explored in classical systems, the experimental investigation in the quantum regime remains elusive due to the difficulty of constructing time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonians in a real quantum system. Here we experimentally demonstrate dynamically encircling the exceptional point with a single nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond. The time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonians are realized utilizing a dilation method. Both the asymmetric and symmetric mode switches have been observed. Our Letter reveals the topological structure of the exceptional point and paves the way to comprehensively explore the exotic properties of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians in the quantum regime.
