Abstract:The present study was conducted by using laying ducks of 6 lines from 2 native breeds in Zhejiang and 50 eggs of each line.Each egg was measured for egg shape index,shell thickness,shell strength,egg specific gravity,albumen height,Hough unit,yolk weight and yolk percentage.Moreover,multiple comparisons for egg quality traits were conducted in different breeds and lines and their heretability were estimated.The results showed that eggshell quality in Shaoxing duck was significantly higher than that of Jinyun duck,while,albumen and yolk quality of Jinyun duck were superior to Shaoxing duck;the comparison among different lines showed that eggshell quality were the highest in Shaobai line and blue shell line of Shaoxing duck,quality of albumen and yolk among 3 strains of Jinyun duck existed only little difference;the results of estimation of heretability for egg quality traits revealed that egg specific gravity and shell thickness had the highest heritability values(0.72 and 0.47,respectively),and the heritability of Hough unit was the lowest(0.06).Our finding suggested that egg specific gravity and shell thickness could be improved by genetic breeding,while albumen height,Hough unit and yolk percentage might be promoted through environmental control.
Effect of Ω-3Pufa at Different Levels in Dietary to Egg Performance and Egg Quality

Abstract:Feeding experiment were conducted on 480 commercial Shaoxing Ducks at 300-day-old with similar body size and weight,they were randomly divided into four groups feeding with four different diets.Compared with the control,the group I,II and III were fed with basal diets adding 1%,2% and 3% concentrations of fish oil respectively.The results showed that the ducks in the group with the addition of 2% fishoil in diet got the highest laying rate,and its average daily laying rate reached to 83.75%.Group III(3%) took the lowest ratio of feed to egg production,which was 8.97% lower than the control.There were no significant difference among groups with respect to their daily feed intakes,broken egg rates,death-out rates etc.The colors of the yolks deepened with the increase of the addition of fish oil.Compared with the control,the groups added with fish oil had significantly lower cholesterol content(P0.05) and lipid peroxidation content(P0.05),except the group I(P0.05).The input-output analysis showed that the group with the addition of 2% fish oil in diet got the highest economic efficiency.From the above,it came to the conclusion that the optimal addition of fish oil to the diets for the ω-3PUFA-rich egg production would be 2%.

Abstract:Ninety Shaoxing mature duck were used to analysis correlation coefficient and path coefficient between 8 quantitative traits and 3 traits of meat production from original farm of Shaoxing duck.The result indicated that more than 32 percent of dressing weight was decided by pelvis width,chest width and shank girth;pelvis width,chest width and semi-diving length together directly affected 32 percent of eviscerated weight.Semi-diring length,chest width and shank girth were key factors influencing meat weight.Therefore,these phenotypes can be used to predict meat production of mature Shaoxing duck and applied for indirect breeding of new duck line from the population of worse reproductionperformance duck.Also it was useful to understand the relationship between morphometric traits and meat produc-tion traits clearly.

Abstract:Khaki-Campbell duck and 4 strains of Shaoxing duck (Shaobai of high production strain, Shaobai of large egg strain, Shaohong of high production strain, Shaohong of large egg strain) were studied for the analysis of variance and estimation of least squares means based on the data of following GPT and GOT. The results indicated that the influence of the effect of location on the GOT, the effect of breed (strain) on the GPT were all highly significant (P0.01). The effect of interaction between breed (strain) and sex on GOT were significant. The significant effects were also estimated for the breed(strain), age, sex and body weight on GOT as well as the age on GPT. The least squares means (LSM) were calculated for GOT (99.97±(51.58)) Karmen and GPT (72.63±44.84) Karmen.

Abstract:The growth curves of Xingyi duck were separately fitted by Logistic,Von Bertalanffy and Gompertz nonlinear growth models according to measured body weight values of young male and female ducks to provide the reference basis for standardization breeding and variety selection of Xingyi duck.The results showed that the body weight of 0~4 weeks old Xingyi duck was in the rapid increment period and the growth rate of female duck was higher than male duck,but the week-growth rate of 6~10 weeks old Xingyi duck slowed down gradually and the week-growth rate of male duck was higher than female duck.Three nonlinear growth models all could better fit body weight growth curves of Xingyi duck and the fitting effect of Gompertz model was the best in three nonlinear growth models.The fitting models for male and female duck were 1404.492e-4.079exp(-0.382t) and 1301.985e-4.324exp(-0.433t) respectively.Three rational breeding stages of 0~4 weeks,5~10 weeks and 11 weeks to adult were divided according to the change regulation of body weight and fitted growth curves.

Abstract:Four duck breeds such as fellows spot-mouth mallard(Group Ⅰ),green-head mallard crossing Shaoxin duck(Group Ⅱ),Xihu mallard(Group Ⅲ),and green-head mallard crossing Xihu mallard(Group Ⅳ)in Zhejiang province are slaughtered at the age of 70 days old to determinate their meat production and quality.Results indicate that breed type is a key factor affecting meat production. The meat quality of carcass is mainly determined by physical properties of chest muscle(CM)and thigh muscle(TM).By comparison,Group Ⅱ is the worst in eviscerating weight,but the best in ratio of CM/TM,meat tenderness,CM weight,and meat color.As far as meat production and quality are concerned,Group Ⅱ ranked first,following by GroupⅠ,Group Ⅲ,and Group Ⅳ.
Genome-Wide Association Studies and Haplotype-Sharing Analysis Targeting the Egg Production Traits in Shaoxing Duck

Abstract:Age at first egg (AFE) and egg number (EN) are economically important traits related to egg production, as they directly influence the benefits of the poultry industry, but the molecular genetic research that affects those traits in laying ducks is still sparse. Our objective was to identify the genomic regions and candidate genes associated with AFE, egg production at 43 weeks (EP43w), and egg production at 66 weeks (EP66w) in a Shaoxing duck population using genome-wide association studies (GWASs) and haplotype-sharing analysis. Single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-based genetic parameter estimates showed that the heritability was 0.15, 0.20, and 0.22 for AFE, EP43w, and EP66w, respectively. Subsequently, three univariate GWASs for AFE, EP43w, and EP66w were carried out independently. Twenty-four SNPs located on chromosome 25 within a 0.01-Mb region that spans from 4.511 to 4.521 Mb were associated with AFE. There are two CIs that affect EP43w, i.e., twenty-five SNPs were in strong linkage disequilibrium region spanning from 3.186 to 3.247 Mb on chromosome 25, a region spanning from 4.442 to 4.446 Mb on chromosome 25, and two interesting genes, ACAD8 and THYN1, that may affect EP43w in laying ducks. There are also two CIs that affect EP66w, i.e., a 2.412-Mb region that spans from 127.497 to 129.910 Mb on chromosome 2 and a 0.355-Mb region that spans from 4.481 to 4.837 Mb on chromosome 29, and CA2 and GAMT may be the putative candidate genes. Our study also found some haplotypes significantly associated with these three traits based on haplotype-sharing analysis. Overall, this study was the first publication of GWAS on egg production in laying ducks, and our findings will be helpful to provide some candidate genes and haplotypes to improve egg production performance based on breeding in laying duck. Additionally, we learned from a method called bootstrap test to verify the reliability of a GWAS with small experimental samples that users can access at https://github.com/xuwenwu24/Bootstrap-test .

Evaluation of Egg-Laying Performance, Egg Quality Traits, and Nutritional Values of Eggs of Leizhou Black Duck

Abstract:This study aimed to evaluate the egg-laying performance and egg quality traits of two generations, and the nutrients and trace elements in eggs of one generation of Leizhou Black Duck. A total of 15 males and 225 female ducks were selected from the Leizhou Black Duck population to form 15 generation 0 families (1 male: 15 females). Eggs were collected from all the families. Using comprehensive index and family breeding selction methods, ducklings were selected to form 15 generation 1 families in the same ratio as above. Egg-laying performance, egg quality traits, and nutrient composition in eggs were recorded, evaluated, and subjected to correlation analysis. The results showed that the overall egg-laying performance (except first egg weight) and egg quality traits in generation 1 were significantly higher than in generation 0 families. There was a significant (p < 0.01) positive correlation between age at first egg, body weight at first egg, and first egg weight whereas egg weight at 43 weeks negatively correlated with all the measured traits. The egg weight had a significant (p < 0.01, 0.05) positive correlation with egg shape index, albumen height, egg yolk weight, and haugh unit but a significant (p < 0.01) negative correlation with egg yolk ratio. The yolk weight had a significant (p < 0.01) positive correlation with the yolk ratio. Leizhou Black Duck eggs contained high amounts of rich nutrients and trace elements. This study provides a basis for duck breeders to focus and improve upon breeding Leizhou Black Duck for quality egg production.

Abstract:Optimizing the dietary calcium (Ca) level is essential to maximize the eggshell quality, egg production and bone formation in poultry. This study aimed to establish the Ca requirements of egg-type duck breeders from 23 to 57 weeks of age on egg production, eggshell, incubation, tibial, plasma and ovary-related indices, as well as the expression of matrix protein-related genes. Totally, 450 Longyan duck breeders aged 21 weeks of age were allotted randomly into five treatments, each with six replicates of 15 individually caged birds. The data collection started from 23 weeks of age and continued over the following 35 weeks. The five groups corresponded to five dietary treatments containing either 2.8%, 3.2%, 3.6%, 4.0% or 4.4% Ca. The tested dietary Ca levels increased (linear, P <0.01) egg production and egg mass, and linearly improved (P <0.01) the feed conversion ratio (FCR). Increasing the dietary Ca levels from 2.8% to 4.4% increased (P <0.01) the eggshell thickness and eggshell content. The tested Ca levels showed a quadratic effect on eggshell thickness and ovarian weight (P <0.01); the highest values were obtained with the Ca levels 4.0% and 3.6%, respectively. Dietary Ca levels affected the small yellow follicles (SYF) number and SYF weight/ovarian weight, and the linear response (P <0.01) was significant vis-à-vis SYF number. In addition, dietary Ca levels increased (P <0.05) the tibial dry weight, breaking strength, mineral density and ash content. Plasma and tibial phosphorus concentration exhibited a quadratic (P <0.01) response to dietary Ca levels. Plasma calcitonin concentration linearly (P <0.01) increased as dietary Ca levels increased. The relative expression of carbonic anhydrase 2 in the uterus rose (P <0.01) with the increment of dietary Ca levels, and the highest value was obtained with 3.2% Ca. In conclusion, Longyan duck breeders fed a diet with 4.0% Ca had superior eggshell and tibial quality, while those fed a diet with 3.6% Ca had the heaviest ovarian weights. The regression model indicated that the dietary Ca levels 3.86%, 3.48% and 4.00% are optimal levels to obtain maximum eggshell thickness, ovarian weight and tibial mineral density, respectively.

Abstract:The bady size and carcass traits of 300-days-old egg-laying New Zongyang Mei ducks(Wanshan Mei Duck) were measured and the correlations between different traits were analyzed.The results showed that the new group of Zongyang Mei duck(Wanshan Mei Duck) is smaller than other local ducks,and the average weight was 1.5 kg,the slaughter rate was 87.53%,sebum rate was 27.99%,the percentage of abdominal fat was 2.76%,lean meat percentage was 24.31%.The correlation analysis showed that there were very significant correlations between live weight and sebum rate,live weight and percentage of abdominal fat(P〈0.01),and there were significant negative correlations between live weight and lean meat rate(P 〈0.05).The test showed that adult new group of Zongyang Mei duck(Wanshan Mei Duck) has the characteristics of high lean meat percentage and low fat.This duck is the ideal material for breeding high-lean meat,low fat meat duck,and it should be protected and used.
The Effect of Composite Immune Regulator to Improve the Performance of Low Yield Meat Breeding Duck

Abstract:Cherry Valley meat breeding ducks were randomly divided into experimental group and control group,the diets supplemented with 1% of the composite immune modulator,fed 45 days,and compared the 2 groups'differences of production performance and egg quality.The results show that the experimental group laying rate was significantly higher than control group(P<0.05),average egg weight was not significant(P>0.05) ;egg quality indicators were measured,the test group's yolk color was significantly higher than control group(P<0.01),other parameters between the two groups was not significant(P>0.05) ;the test group's death and eliminate rate was lower than the control group,but the difference was not significant(P>0.05).This study confirmed that the composite immune modulator can effectively improve the lowyield Cherry Valley duck meat production performance,caused by the low temperature,moisture environmental factors.this composite immune modulator was fit for supplemented to The diets of meat breeding duck in the winter season.

Abstract:In recent years, duck production has been changed from conventional free range and open water outdoors to confinement in birdhouses. And the concept of animal welfare in high stocking density begins to be accepted in China. The search of the relationship between growth performance and flock activity of Pekin ducks with different stocking densities using camera surveillance has great potential as an aid to improving flock management. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of stocking density on growth performance and activity of Pekin duck flocks. Furthermore, the correlation between growth performance and the activity of White Pekin ducks was investigated. Eventually, it will generate an automatic method for monitoring growth performance and stocking density evaluation of Pekin ducks. All ducks (24 days of age, n = 1200) were randomly allotted into 5 stocking density groups of 5 ducks/m(2), 6 ducks/m(2), 7 ducks/m(2), 8 ducks/m(2), 9 ducks/m(2), with 6 replicates for each group. One group was selected for monitoring the activity of ducks using video recording system. The optical flow measures were extracted to describe the duck flock activity statistically using night video data. On the 24 and 42 days of age, sample collection was conducted for initial and final body weight (BW) measurements respectively. The results showed that the stocking density had significant effects on final BW and weight gain (P < 0.05), but not on feed intake and feed/gain (P > 0.05). The stocking density also had significant effects on mean and variance of optical flow produced by duck flock activity throughout the experimental duration. In the last, a significant relation was found between the mean of optical flow and final BW (r(2) = +0.87). These results show that the proposed method has potential in automatic growth monitoring and stocking density management of Pekin ducks. It can cut out the bio-security risk and animal stress of having people actually visiting duck houses.
Productivity, Reproductive Performance, and Fat Deposition of Laying Duck Breeders in Response to Concentrations of Dietary Energy and Protein.

Abstract:This study evaluated the optimal concentrations of dietary ME and CP for the productivity, reproductive performance, and fat deposition in laying duck breeders aged from 29 to 45 wk. Using a 3 × 3 factorial arrangement of treatments, 648 Longyan laying duck breeders with similar BW were randomly assigned to experimental diets of 2,600 (HME = high ME), 2,500 (MME = medium ME), or 2,400 (LME = low ME) kcal of ME/kg, each containing 19% (HCP = high CP), 18% (MCP = medium CP), or 17% (LCP = low CP) CP. Each dietary treatment contained 6 replicates of 12 birds each. Compared with birds fed the LCP diet, the egg production and egg mass were higher in birds fed HCP and MCP (P < 0.01), with better feed conversion (P < 0.01). Interactions were detected between ME and CP levels in egg production, egg mass, and feed conversion ratio as the LME MCP diet was the best (P < 0.05). The birds fed MME (P < 0.05) had the lowest abdominal fat. The percentage of healthy ducklings was affected by maternal dietary CP (P < 0.05) with the HCP being the highest. The weight of large yellow follicles/ovarian weight was higher in birds fed HCP and MCP (P < 0.05), whereas the weight of small yellow follicles/ovarian weight was higher in birds fed HCP and LCP (P < 0.05). The hepatic transcript abundances of genes for very low density apolipoprotein-II and carnitine palmitoyltransferase-1A (CPT-1A) were lowest in birds fed MCP, whereas the highest abundance of CPT-1A transcripts was found in birds fed MME. These results revealed that the diets containing ME of 12.9 kcal/g protein optimized both egg production and egg mass, while the feed conversion was optimized at 12.8 kcal ME/g protein. Using ME to CP ratio of 12.9 kcal/g protein, i.e., 2,451 kcal ME/kg at 19% CP, maximized the reproductive performance and hatchling outcome of Longyan laying duck breeders.
Comparative Analysis on Growth Curve Fitting of Three Types of Goose

Abstract:In this study,the growth curves of wanxi white goose,Huoyan goose and shitou goosefrom 0 to 13 weeks old were analyzed and four nonlinear curves of Logistic,Von bertalanffy,gompertz and multinomial model were used to fit the growth curve.The results showed that the growth curves were appropriately fitted with four models(R2 0.99).and Chi-square test indicated that the gompertz model had the best effect on fitting with the growth curves of Wanxi White goose and Huoyan goose(χ2χ2 0.05=22.36,df=13).Conversely,the effect of four models for shitou goose was not ideal.In general,the gompertz model was better in fitting with the growth curves in goose.Analyzing the fitting parameters of the best model,we found growth inflexion of Huoyan goose(Small goose) was the earliest,while shitou goose(Large goose) was the latest.
Genome-Wide Association Analysis and Genetic Parameters for Egg Production Traits in Peking Ducks

Abstract:Egg production traits are crucial in the poultry industry, including age at first egg (AFE), egg number (EN) at different stages, and laying rate (LR). Ducks exhibit higher egg production capacity than other poultry species, but the genetic mechanisms are still poorly understood. In this study, we collected egg-laying data of 618 Peking ducks from 22 to 66 weeks of age and genotyped them by whole-genome resequencing. Genetic parameters were calculated based on SNPs, and a genome-wide association study (GWAS) was performed for these traits. The SNP-based heritability of egg production traits ranged from 0.09 to 0.54. The GWAS identified nine significant SNP loci associated with AFE and egg number from 22 to 66 weeks. These loci showed that the corresponding alleles were positively correlated with a decrease in the traits. Moreover, three potential candidate genes (ENSAPLG00020011445, ENSAPLG00020012564, TMEM260) were identified. Functional enrichment analyses suggest that specific immune responses may have a critical impact on egg production capacity by influencing ovarian function and oocyte maturation processes. In conclusion, this study deepens the understanding of egg-laying genetics in Peking duck and provides a sound theoretical basis for future genetic improvement and genomic selection strategies in poultry.

Abstract:The present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of different rearing methods and stocking densities on carcass yield and proximate composition of meat in small-sized meat ducks. A total of 555 one-day-old birds were randomly allocated to six treatment groups (three replicates per treatment, sex ratio 1/1) with a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement of two rearing methods (reared in cage or net) and three stocking densities (5 [low], 7 [medium], or 9 [high] birds/m2) until day 70. Five male and five female birds from each replicate were randomly selected and processed to determine the carcass yield. Proximate composition was determined by proximate analysis using the breast and thigh muscles. There was no interaction effect between the rearing method and stocking density on carcass yield. The rearing method affected the thigh muscle rate, which was higher in the cage groups (P < 0.05). The final BW and abdominal fat rate decreased with increasing density (P < 0.05), whereas the thigh muscle rate increased (P < 0.05). There were significant interaction effects (P < 0.05) between the rearing method and stocking density on the content of protein, fat, and collagen. The content of fat and moisture was greater and lower, respectively, in the cage groups (P < 0.05). The content of moisture, fat, and collagen with a medium density was higher (P < 0.05). In addition, the content of protein and fat was lower in the ducks fed in nets at low and high densities (P < 0.05), respectively; the collagen content of breast and thigh muscle was lower in the ducks fed in cages and nets, respectively, at a low density (P < 0.05). Our findings provide valuable insights into the single and interactive effects of the rearing method and stocking density on duck slaughter performance and proximate composition of meat. The results indicate that a rearing system with a cage pattern and a medium density is better than other arrangements for small-sized meat ducks.
Effects of Stocking Density on Growth Performance, Meat Quality and Tibia Development of Pekin Ducks

Abstract:This study was performed to investigate the effects of stocking density on performance, meat quality and tibia development in Pekin ducks reared on a plastic wire floor. A total of 372 healthy, 21-day-old, male ducks with similar body weight (BW) were randomly allotted to stocking densities of five (low), eight (medium) and 11 (high) birds/m(2). Each group had six replicates. Results showed that compared with the low density group, medium and high stocking density caused a decrease in final BW at 42days old, and in average daily gain, European performance index (p<.01) and meat pH at 45min postmortem (p<.001), and an increase of meat drip loss (p<.01). High stocking density resulted in an increase of feed/gain ratio (p<.001), but a decrease of tibia calcium (p<.01) and phosphorus content (p<.05). Meat color, shear force values, tibia size (weight, length, and width) and breaking strength were not significantly influenced by stocking density. In conclusion, stocking density over eight birds/m(2) negatively affects growth performance, but meat quality and tibia development are not dramatically influenced. Based on this study, the stocking density of male Pekin ducks should be adjusted between five and eight birds/m(2).
Comparison of carcass traits and nutritional profile in two different broiler-type duck lines

Abstract:Cherry Valley ducks (CVDs) and White Kaiya ducks (WKDs) are judged to be fast- and slow-growing lines, respectively. To investigate the carcass traits and nutritional profile at their marketable ages, 12 birds (38 days for CVDs, n = 6; 56 days for WKDs, n = 6) were randomly selected and slaughtered. Indicators such as breast muscle weight, shear force, and proximate composition were comprehensively detected. Although the carcass and breast muscle weight in WKDs were significantly lower, remarkably higher intramuscular fat and tenderness and less moisture content were observed in WKDs. Besides, WKDs contained higher contents of Cu, Zn, and Ca, whereas CVDs contained higher leucine (Leu) and histidine (His) compositions (P < 0.01). Moreover, higher monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) along with lower saturated fatty acids (SFAs) were detected in WKDs (P < 0.01). Taken together, despite light carcass and breast muscle weight, WKDs had advantages in nutritional compositions except for amino acid constituents, including intramuscular fat, MUFAs, and PUFAs, as well as Cu, Zn, and Ca. These data would not only provide genetic resources for breeding new duck lines but also offer a useful reference for making decisions on high-nutrient meat consumption.
Estimation of Dietary Tryptophan Requirement for Laying Duck Breeders: Effects on Productive and Reproductive Performance, Egg Quality, Reproductive Organ and Ovarian Follicle Development and Serum Biochemical Indices

Abstract:This study aimed to determine the dietary tryptophan (Trp) requirement for laying duck breeders. A total of 504 Longyan duck breeders (body weight: 1.20 ± 0.02 kg) aged 22 wk were randomly allocated to 6 treatments, each with 6 replicates of 14 ducks. During the next 16 wk, birds were fed the basal diet with total Trp contents of 1.00, 2.00, 3.00, 4.00, 5.00 and 6.00 g/kg, respectively. Dietary Trp levels increased egg production, egg mass and feed intake of duck breeders from 22 to 37 wk (P < 0.05), and there were linear and quadratic effects of Trp level (P < 0.05). The feed conversion ratio (FCR) quadratically decreased with dietary Trp levels (P < 0.05). Dietary Trp levels decreased (P < 0.05) egg albumen height and Haugh unit at wk 8 or 12, and the responses were linear and quadratic (P < 0.05). The body weight of breeders, absolute and relative weight of oviduct, number and total weight of preovulatory follicles (POF), and its proportion relative to ovarian weight were increased (P < 0.05), and the responses were linear (P < 0.01) and quadratic (P < 0.001). Ovarian weight increased quadratically (P < 0.05), and the mean weight of POF increased (P < 0.05), linearly and quadratically. The proportion of small yellow follicles relative to ovary weight decreased (P < 0.01) linearly and quadratically. At wk 16 of the trial period, the serum albumin content and alanine aminotransferase activity decreased (P < 0.05) and the creatinine content increased (P < 0.01) linearly and quadratically. The Trp requirements were estimated to be 3.14 g/kg for optimizing egg production, 2.93 g/kg for egg mass, and 2.92 g/kg for FCR. Overall, dietary Trp levels (1 to 6 g/kg) affected productive performance, egg quality, reproductive organ and ovarian follicle development, and serum biochemical indices of layer duck breeders, and a diet containing 2.9 to 3.1 g Trp per kg feed was adequate during the laying period (22 to 37 wk of age).
